On the outskirts of Vale, all up on the cliff, were a dilapidated manor. It was as old as the town itself and there were many stories surrounding it about its previous residents. A nobleman who murdered his promiscuous wife in a frenzy of rage along with the child that weren't his; it is said he hung the corpses at the entrance of the manor before he killed himself jumping over the cliff. A mad scientist who did inhuman experiments on all sorts of beings; it is said we could still hear the screams of agony of those creatures for they never truly found peace. But the most popular one was about an evil sorcerer who was obsessed with djinns and their powers. He tried to put one into submission but he failed… No one really knows what happened to him, he just disappeared; it is said the djinn still lived there. One thing was certain, on all Hallows Eve the manor would come alive and inexplicable things would happen.
"...and whoever entered there on that dreadful night... would never ever come out."
"...Yang, turn off that flashlight it's the middle of the day, also you're disturbing my reading time." Blake said cooly as she turned a page of her book.
"Yeah, tone it down you goober, I'm trying to finish my assignment." Ruby added frowning at her paper.
"Ugh you guys are no fun!" The blonde girl whined and slumped on her chair. "At least give me some reaction, I mean aren't you two curious about that manor?"
The black and red duo didn't deign give Yang an answer, but she still persisted.
"So Halloween is like next week-"
"No." The raven haired girl cut in as she stared at her girlfriend with a blank stare.
"Let me at least finish!"
"Miss Xiao-Long, as delighted as I am to see you in the library, I suggest you to be quiet unless you want extra hours of detention, I'm sure I could find some use to that overflowing energy of yours." Professor Goodwitch glared down at her student with all the warmth of a tundra, she looked like she could suck the life out of you in a single gulped.
With that the bell rang and the girls got out of the library.
"I would rather spend the entire night at that manor than have an hour of detention with Glynda Goodwitch…jeez that woman is terrifying." The loud girl shivered. " ...so are we going or what? I heard the night before Halloween is the perfect time for spirits to manifest."
"Yang, remember when we all went there last summer and Nora scared the living hell out of you?" Blake asked "Though it was kind of cute how you clung into me." she smirked.
"Wha- but-! Listen, she was dressed as a clown! We were supposed to scare you but she came dressed as a fucking clown ! Who does that! What kind of cruel evil maleficent being does that !" Yang rambled, face as red as Ruby's namesake.
"Come on you big baby, we'll be late for class."
Ruby chuckled at her friend dragging her still embarrassed sister by her hand. She went to her locker to get her things, she stopped when she saw her sketchbook. It was open at an unfinished drawing, a manor by the cliff with a single white figure at the balcony facing the ocean. She sighed….she would never forget her encounter one year ago, the night of her birthday. She was brought out of her thoughts by the bell.
"Damn it I'm gonna be late!"
"Hey Yang, you said you wanted to go to the manor, right? I'm in."
Ruby looked at her older sister as she paused the game they were playing in the living room. The blonde turned to face her, narrowing her eyes.
"...why the sudden change of mind?"
The silver eyed girl shrugged. "I never said no, besides I have to help you regain your honor dear sis-mmph" she was interrupted by a pillow thrown at her face.
Yang grinned ominously. "You will regret saying those words baby sis". At that the blonde girl lunged at her younger sister and began wrestling her on the couch.
The siblings layed on the floor laughing until they were out of breath. They stayed like that for a little while until Yang broke the silence.
"It's about what happened last year right?"
Ruby said nothing.
Yang sighed. "Alrighty then, to the manor it is"
The manor had nothing special, except for the weird pentagrams drowned randomly inside, which was probably the doing of some kids to make it seem scarier, it was just a big decrepit house. Ruby always liked to venture there and admiring the view by the balcony in the master bedroom, she liked to sit there and draw, the soothing air of the ocean always made her feel at peace, it was her safe haven. She always thought it was a shame that the manor was left abandoned. This place was beautiful, it just needed a fresh layer of paint and a bit of fixing and cleaning. Then she met her.
The rain was falling hard that night. Ruby was running aimlessly, she had a fight at her birthday party with her dad, and the things they said to each other weren't pretty. She felt bad causing a scene in front of her friends and leaving them like that. She hoped they would forgive. Since her mother's death things had never been the same at home, and her relationship with her father only strained. Leaving Yang playing moderators between them but with everything on her plate, there was so much she could do. So she ran as fast as she could until her legs screamed at her to stop.
The red haired girl found herself at the manor, the rain was still pouring heavily and the thunder was roaring in the sky. She was shivering.
"Dammit, now I'm soaked, without my comfort hoodie and most importantly without my chocolate chips cookies inside my comfort hoodie's pockets! Fucking great!" she cursed.
She decided to look around the manor to find something to warm her up. There was a fireplace but the wood was somehow wet, so was the floor and.. everywhere really.
"Must be the rain and all the humidity…" she mused.
The only remotely dry things were a box of matches and black candles placed around a pentagram in the main hall.
"Well might as well light up this place."
After lighting the candles, the silver eyed girl had nothing better to do than to study the weird symbols on the floor.
"What kind of lunatic drew this, it looks like some kind of magic circle… and I've never seen characters like these before…" as Ruby was muling over the circle, she was startled by the thunder and the sound of a fracturing glass.
When she looked up she found a full length oval mirror, which wasn't there in the first place. The glass was cracked from the right to the middle, and the same characters as the pentagram were carved in its periphery. As she came close to the mirror she spotted a flash of white passing by, when she turned around and looked up at the stairs, she saw a girl; wearing a white gown, with flawless white skin and long shiny white hair; walking in the direction of the bedrooms.
"Sweet mother of cookies… this is the part where I should totally run away instead of following a pretty lady who looks like a ghost." Ruby said as she took the stairs. "...never mind it was probably my imagination I'm just gonna check…"
She walked into the main bedroom first. It was empty… "heh I knew it, I was just seeing-" she froze. There, on the balcony, was the ghost-like girl leaning on the bannister, completely unbothered by the cold rain.
"Hey! Don't stay out in the rain, you're going to catch a cold!".
As the girl slowly turned around, silver eyes went wide like moon plates and time seemed to slow. Ruby found herself facing the most beautiful girl she had ever seen, icy blue eyes that seemed to pierce into her soul, fair and unblemished skin save for the scar on her left eye that seemed to make her even more attractive, and pure white hair that is reminiscent of a fresh pile of snow white duvet. The red haired girl could only gape at her.
"Hmmm you can see me, interesting…" the girl spoke and even with all the downpour, her voice sounded like a clear and harmonious melody.
The girl then suddenly disappeared causing Ruby to blink and snap out of it. Was she having some kind of lucid dream?
"How sweet of you to worry about me" a voice whispered in her ear. She jumped and yelped in surprise, the white girl had come out of nowhere standing by her side, and was now smirking at her.
"But, darling, you should know that I'm not the type of creature that needs to worry about a mere cold…" the girl trailed.
Suddenly the room was filled by a thick fog. Ruby was caught off guard and fell on the floor with a splash, there was water in the room.
She heard the girl giggle and looked up to her. She couldn't believe her eyes.
The girl had now blue skin, she wore a long baby blue chiffon skirt with a split exposing her entire leg, and a tie knot up bolero of the same colour. Her hair was now done in an off centered braided ponytail. She also had bracelets at her wrists, belly and ankles..she almost looked like an exotic belly dancer.
The girl huffed. "I'm not a belly dancer, you ignorant dolt, I suggest you be careful with what you're going to say."
"Okay so the insanely beautiful girl isn't a belly dancer, noted" The red haired girl thought.
The creature chuckled as she bent down and extended her hand to shut Ruby's still gaping mouth.
"A dolt and a flatterer, I appreciate the compliment nonetheless...as plain as it is." She leaned closer. "Hmmm… you have silver eyes, such a rare trait…"
"Wha- y-you...you… did you read my mind?.. what are you?"
"Can't you figure it out?" The girl was now sitting cross-legged on the bed. Did she teleport? It was making the young rose dizzy. "If you can't, you truly are a dolt." She smirked.
"W-well you're clearly not human for one." Ruby said as she stood up.
The white haired girl scoffed. "Perspective."
Suddenly the creature perked up at something and stood up.
"As.. pleasant as this is, you need to go home, Ruby."
"What? Wait, how do you know my name?! And what's yours?! Why were you-"
The blue skinned creature snapped her fingers and Ruby found herself abruptly engulfed in water. As she struggled for air, she heard the girl's voice echoing.
"Find out what I am and I might answer all your questions…"
That was the last thing she remembered before her consciousness faded. She woke up in her bed gasping for air. Was she dreaming?
"Ruby! You're awake! Oh my god you can't scare me like that!" Ruby didn't have time to think about what happened to her as she was tackled by her older sister.
"Yang… air please.."
"Ah! Sorry...I was just so worried, you ran off yesterday in that awful rain to God knows where and when I decided to go look for you I found you unconscious by the front door." Yang sighed and hugged her baby sister. "Don't worry me like that rubbles."
"I… I'm sorry Yang…"
Marids, the most powerful genies from the water plane. They were proud and independent creatures, and regarded other beings as inferior. They also greatly appreciated flattery.
"So they're like the nobility of the water plane… This definitely sounds like her…" Ruby mumbled. Since that night, she couldn't stop thinking about that girl. At first she thought it was a dream but it was too vivid to be one, as crazy as it sounded. So she started actively searching about what that girl was. Since she seemed to have an affinity with water, she dug into that element and all the creatures related to it. She finally settled with Marids and returned to the manor to confirm it.
"Um.. H-Hello?...are you here?" Ruby decided to wander around the manor and look for that genie girl.
"Hellooo… the beautiful gorgeous genie girl! You there?!" Her face was beat red, since Marids liked flattery she decided to take a shot and see if the genie would come out of its bottle... figuratively, but that was still embarrassing. "You said you would answer my questions if I find out what you are… you're a Marid, right?!" She got no response.
For a week, Ruby went to the manor everyday after school and stayed until late at night calling out the Marid, all in vain, she only succeeded in making her family worry. The silver eyed girl began wondering if it truly was a dream, then she eventually gave up. But she still couldn't forget that girl so she drew her whenever she could.
"Alright, annd done." The young artist had finally finished her drawing of the marid and was admiring it,then sighed and looked at the sunset from the balcony she was seated at. "I wonder why she was wearing a belly dancer outfit… do female Marids lure men with their dancing and beauty and like… drown them in their water plane or something?"
"How vulgar, I am a Marid not some kind of lowely nymph."
Ruby screamed and stumbled upon the bannister, she was about to fall if it weren't for the Marid who caught her by her hoodie.
"Humph, you dolt, what if I hadn't caught you?"
"I-I...um I knew you would? Haha"
The Marid rolled her eyes and walked inside the bedroom.
"So… you're real…why didn't you show up sooner?"
"And why would I?" The white haired girl responded with a haughty tone.
"Wha- but you said you would answer my questions if I figured out what you were!"
"Might."
"What?"
"I said I might answer your questions. Honestly, it was entertaining and...a little endearing to see you come here everyday and flatter me, I wanted to see how long you would last. Alas you gave up so soon, oh ye of little faith."
"Well- that was… I mean.." Ruby was now a blushing and stuttering mess, she cleaned her throat. "Then will you do me the honor? And tell me your name? At least… please?..." She used her puppy dog eyes.
The Marid gave her a blank look then burst out laughing. "I can't decide if you're a dolt or a puppy… or maybe both?" She giggled.
The little rose was yet again embarrassed, she was obviously playing with her and that made her frustrated.
"Weiss."
"What ?"
"My name is Weiss. Now stop pouting you doltish puppy"
"You know, I have a name it's-"
"Ruby Rose, I know." Weiss smirked. "Why are you surprised? I'm a Marid I know all, like the fact that you secretly enjoy my belly dancer outfit"
Ruby couldn't take it anymore; she crouched and buried her face in her hands. "She reads minds! how could I forget!" She screamed in her head. "ugh she's right I'm a dolt. I need to stop thinking. Now."
The Marid was having a blast, spread on the bed and out of breath from laughing.
She eventually stopped and layed on her side to face the embarrassed rose. "I like you, you're an interesting one, maybe I should take you to my realm…" Weiss gestured to the sketchbook. "You're a talented artist, I'm sure you would be a great source of entertainment…" She trailed as she eyed Ruby with a predatory look.
The silver eyed girl gulped. "I-I mean if you like my drawings you could just ask and I will draw you anything...I can also paint… and I sometimes do wood-crafting I would say I'm decent at it so I would gladly make you something I heard Marids enjoyed artistic creations so yeah… what I mean is you don't have to kidnap me I will make you anything if you want it."
Weiss raised her eyebrow "And what would you like in exchange? "
"... We could be friends..?"
The Marid blinked."... friends..?"
"Yeah! even besties if you want I mean I've never met a genie in my life so yeah why not and I really enjoy making things for my friends like for Blake's birthday I.." as Ruby rambled, Weiss looked at her as if she had grown a second hand, then gave her a smile that did wonders to the red haired girl's heart.
"Fine, we'll be friends… for now at least..."
Ruby tilted her head. "What do you mean for now ? Are you giving me a free trial or something?"
The Marid chuckled as she walked to her. "I mean that we will be seeing a lot of each other Ruby Rose, but for now it's time for you to go home. Try to stay awake this time you dolt." With that she snapped her fingers.
"Wait-!" The silver eyed girl found herself yet again drowned in water. Before everything disappeared, she distinguished the fading silhouette of Weiss waving at her. Then she was suddenly brought to her front door, completely drenched, a bit disoriented and coughing water.
"Why do you have to... water-teleport me to my house! Ever heard of walking?!"
After that Weiss never reappeared at the Manor again. At first Ruby thought the genie was just being whimsical and would show up eventually, so she waited. She even tried to perform some weird rituals to summon djinns and the likes, but nothing. And just like that a year passed.
"What do you mean we can't get in!"
"I'm pretty sure it's because of this" Yang pointed at the sold sign. "Nora, you can read right?"
"It means if we get in we'll be trespassing." Blake chimed in.
"... Blake, why are you so far away?" The ginger asked as she began walking toward her friend.
"Stay. Away. One more step and I'll make sure the only thing we could manage to bury is your scalp." Blake bristled.
Nora froze, it was an empty threat but something in the black haired girl's glare made her think otherwise.
"Why is Nora dressed like Zwei?" Ruby wondered.
Yang shook her head. "The real question is, why is her costume working on Blake?"
"Agh! Whatever! I'm going in first guys!" With that Nora sprinted like a madman towards the manor screami 'trick or treat' to potential ghosts and spirits.
Ren sighed. "I'll go get her."
All of a sudden, they all heard a deafening scream causing them to run and check on their friend. As soon as they entered the house, they heard giggles coming from the living room.
There was Nora, giggling and clapping at a short portly, man who was showing her fire tricks.
"Hey guys!" She waved at them. "Meet my new friend, Klein!"
The man bowed at them. "Klein Sieben, a pleasure to make your acquaintances." He then sneezed and his eyes turned red. "So y'all are the hooligans who trespassed here, if it weren't for my mistress I would've skewered all you young whippersnappers!"
"...um, Nora what the hell?". Yang was the first to speak up.
"Hehe, isn't he fun!"
The man sneezed again, his eyes turning blue. "My apologies, I am sure you all came here for a thrilling experience, but I will have to ask you to leave. This house will be undergoing some renovations really soon."
"Who's going to live here?" Ruby asked a bit pained by the fact that she wouldn't be able to come here anymore. "Does it mean I will really never see her again? For good now?"
Klein smiled kindly at her. "The Schnee family, I am their butler. The young lady is about your age and will be attending Beacon highschool too, I hope you will be good friends with her…"
"Hello everyone, my name is Weiss Schnee. Pleased to meet you all."
Ruby couldn't believe her eyes. Weiss was there, right in front of her, at her school no less! Her flawless skin was white instead of blue, she wore a red cardigan over a button up white shirt, tucked inside a high waist jeans and she completed her outfit with white heeled boots. She still had her off centered braided ponytail and adorned a perfect smile on her face. Upon spotting Ruby her smile broadened showing pearly white teeth.
"Oh god I think I'm hyperventilating."
As Weiss came to sit next to her, she opened and closed her mouth making indistinct noises.
"Y-you- h-how… I mean…"
The Marid chuckled and put a finger on Ruby's lips to shut her up. "I told you we'll be seeing a lot of each you dolt." She then leaned in and kissed Ruby on her cheek, leaving a red lipstick mark."I hope we will get along...bestie." Weiss grinned, mirth apparent in her eyes… Ruby fainted.
