Take Me Back To The Night We Met
Klaus poured another glass of bourbon at Gloria's counter. It had been more than 20 minutes since Mia had gone up to her room looking for her friend who came from New York. He saw Gloria come down the stairs and officially open the bar's doors that Friday night.
This would be one of the last weeks that Mia would perform the feather fan burlesque show in Chicago. Klaus spent the rest of the day considering the vampire's invitation to spend the summer at some mansion in Long Island. For the first time in ages, Klaus wanted to take a chance and pay to see if this romance would survive past the summer.
He decided to head upstairs towards the dancer's suite when the whispers behind her door were amplified by his vampire hearing. Two women talking as quietly as they could, distantly, probably on the balcony. Mia's voice, a sweet, soft tone, was shaky and weak. The other woman's voice was strong and he could recognize it anywhere, even after almost four centuries.
A million thoughts went through Klaus' head in a matter of seconds.
He didn't know if Mia knew who he was since the night they met. If it was his paranoia and lack of trust screaming inside his head that she was planning his death from the first drink. Either way, Klaus was sure of only one thing: he wouldn't let Katerina Petrova escape alive again.
Life really could never be that easy for him. Even when he allowed himself to get attached to someone, be intimate, talk about those fucking feelings and stupid butterflies, he could never live that type of fantasy, because that was it: just a fantasy.
Those delightful months with Mia were the fantasy of a lifetime that will now end in the worst possible way. As horrible as it may sound, the truth is that Klaus Mikaelson was a nearly 1,000-year-old vampire with a long list of enemies and traitors and he will never pass up the opportunity to take revenge.
He knocked on Mia's bedroom door and heard her faint breathing on the other side. It took a few seconds for her to open.
"Oh love, did you really think I will let you leave me without saying goodbye?" Klaus said with a smirk and entered the room.
Mia was pale, her eyes were red as if she had been crying. There was no sign of Katerina, who probably ran thru the balcony's fire escape. He looked around the room and saw that the dancer's suitcases were no longer in place, the wardrobe was empty and the drawings he made for her that hung on the walls were also not there.
"What is it Mia, cat got your tongue?" He asked, getting closer to her while she moved as far away as possible until her back hit the wall. "Where is your friend Katerina?"
Mia didn't respond. The expression on her face was a mixture of sadness, pain and fear. Klaus cursed himself knowing that nothing would ever be the same again. He held the vampire's arms tight enough to leave bruises and force her to look at him. He was so consumed with rage that his golden iris pulsed and his fangs appeared.
"Are you going to hurt me now?" Mia hissed, struggle to free herself from Klaus's hands, but he only pressed her further against the wall.
"Mia" Klaus gritted his teeth "I don't want to hurt you. You can free yourself from this. I'm giving you a choice. Not many people can say that, sweetheart. Just tell me where Katerina is. Her death sentence was signed over 400 years ago. She is doomed. But you can make it out alive."
"Go on, Klaus" Mia yelled with a rage that consumed her inside "Rip my heart out. Let my blood splatter all over this place. I'll never betray her."
The original vampire gave her a amusing look. What a loyal annoying little thing, he thought.
Klaus released one of the hands that held Mia against the wall, touched gently her face and lift her chin. He looked into her big blue eyes and spoke slowly and firmly, compelling her. "What is your connection with the Petrova doppelganger?"
"She saved my life when I was a child living in Mystic Falls. Katherine raised me in Europe and turned me into a vampire when I was attacked by a man. She is the only person that I have" Mia replied, feeling that the words were coming out of her mouth without any control. A look of doubt grew on her face.
"Are you a Petrova by blood?" Klaus raised his eyebrows and saw the dancer deny it with her head, unable to speak. He knew it was probably impossible: he killed Katerina's family in Bulgaria with his own hands, but he need to be sure about it.
"Now that you know I'm an original vampire, I can tell you a little secret, love" Klaus whispered close to her ear "I can compel vampires too. So, where is your precious Katerina?"
Katherine ran with vampire speed and hid in the dressing room behind the stage. In her rush, she only managed to take one of the suitcases that Mia had packed. She tried to remain as silent as possible so that no one would follow her.
It had been over 20 minutes since Klaus had entered Mia's room. Katherine Pierce didn't believe in gods, but she prayed that her friend would made it out alive.
The escape plan was already in place: Mia would meet her in the dressing room, they would take the getaway car parked behind the bar and drive towards Florida and then take refuge in Cuba for a while.
Of course the dazzling parties on Long Island and the summer of the Roaring Twenties were out of reach and was just some stupid wild dream, she tought. They could never settle in one place for so long. They would always be on the run. Forever. Until the day the someone figures out how to kill the immortal bastard.
Katherine was trying to hear any movement or Mia's voice, but Gloria's jazz band had already started playing, which was making the vampire increasingly nervous.
She decided to open the door to try and see what was happening, looking for any sign of Mia. The dressing room was at the end of a long hallway behind the stage and was next to one of the emergency exits, which was open and overlooked the street. When Katherine looked at that door, she saw who she had been waiting for so long to meet again.
The man in the tuxedo and dark blond hair was feeding on someone outside the bar when he heard the small creak of the dressing room door and realized he was being watched. In a matter of seconds, he dropped the body on the floor and stood in front of the door.
"Mia, is that you?" Stefan asked suspiciously. Katherine was uneasy. Everything was happening out of her control. In one quick movement, she opened the door just enough space to pull Stefan inside.
His face was one of complete shock and his greenish eyes were shrouded in doubt. Kat often imagined Stefan's reactions. In her best dreams, he was extremely pleased to know that she was alive and he was kissing her. In the worst dreams - or the most realistic - he held her by the neck and wanted to kill her.
Instead, Stefan stand still and just asked. "How? How is it possible?"
"There are a lot of things you don't know and I promise I'll tell you everything… but Stefan, you need to trust me now. Mia is in danger and we need to get the hell out of here" Katherine begged him and realized he was still confused.
"She is your sister. Amelia is alive. I saved her" Kat whispered "But we need to find her now. Or she will die."
Before Stefan could respond, gunshots, screams, and police sirens were all that could be heard in the bar. Katherine strained and distantly heard a female voice calling for Stefan and Nik and assumed it was Rebekah, the other original vampire. Her voice had a tone of desperation and she repeated the phrase "He is here" as if she was trying to warn someone. Klaus, probably.
She couldn't wait any longer. She had to take advantage of the chaos that was created and find Mia. Even if it meant losing Stefan all over again.
Katherine ran through the gunfire and left Stefan in the dressing room, without looking back.
N/A: This was an unusual Klaus and Kat POV chapter (most of the story is told from Mia's perspective). What do you guys think?
