Chapter 16

Malia:

I feel guilty and I hate it. I decided not to tell Stiles about the gift I got. I know I should, we promised each other, and he shared his news. But I couldn't bring myself to do it. Instead, I stuffed it in my backpack and sent a text to Peter to meet me at Derek's place. Stiles had practice after school today, so I caught a ride with Allison and Lydia home. Dad was still at work so I could leave without questions. I ran to Dereks place taking the stairs instead of the lift and the door was opened almost immediately by Braeden this time.

"Hey Malia. Peter should be here soon." Derek said from the kitchen area. "Is there a reason you needed to meet here?"

"Uh not really. I just think he's lying about having his own place and secretly lives in your upstairs area." I shrugged. He snorted and Braeden rolled her eyes.

"It wouldn't surprise me if that were the case." She said.

"What's wrong, cousin, don't want to see me." I smiled sweetly at Derek.

"You have his smile." He chuckled shaking his head.

"I'm not sure if that was a compliment or an insult." I blinked at him.

"Compliment." Peter said, coming in.

"Such a sneaky bastard." Braeden murmured strutting back over to Derek and giving him a slap on the ass before picking up a knife and helping him with whatever he was doing. I'm pretty sure my eyes were not meant to see that.

"Malia, its good to see you again." Peter said standing awkwardly in front of me.

"Daddy number 2." I greeted. Derek barked out a laugh. Peter rolled his eyes.

"What can I do for you? that text you sent sounded urgent."

Just that quick my demeanor changed, and I was shuffling from foot to foot twisting my hands again. He noticed and twitched in my direction but stopped himself.

"What's wrong?" he asked his voice full of concern.

"I have to show you something." I told him, taking a seat on the couch and opening my bag. I pulled out the postcard and gift box and handed it to him. Just like me he opened the box first and pulled out the rattle looking confused before reading the inscription and his eyes widened. Setting it down, he picked up the card, read it then looked at me.

"She knows." He whispered.

"I think so." My voice cracked and I went back to twisting my hands again.

"How?"

"I don't know. But I think she's watching me." I admitted.

Derek and Braeden both stopped working and came to stand in front of us.

"I was at the lake house with everyone this past week and everything was normal until last night. I got this weird feeling that I couldn't explain, still can't really. Just that… something was happening or going to happen. and I kept looking out the window. But I didn't see anything. the feeling just faded after a while."

"The connection." He nodded.

"What connection?"

"It's as animal instinct thing. Like how an alpha knows when one of his beta's is in trouble or nearby. The same for a mother, there's a connection to their cub. But I would think it would have long since disappeared. Its been years. Or maybe since she already thought you had died, and she left she stopped feeling it. what would bring her back though?"

"She would have to be within a certain distance to feel that though. So, she would have had to have been in the area recently to even know about Malia, right?" Derek asked.

"Right." Peter agreed.

"There's something else." I said then blew out a tired breath. "Lydia has a feeling that something is going to happen, and she had a premonition."

"Lydia?" Peter said his eyes snapping to me. "What did she see?"

"She said she saw two different vision with two different outcomes. Either I'm gonna get hurt or Stiles is." I told him, clenching my fists.

"Did you tell Stiles about this, the note and the rattle?" Peter asked.

I shook my head.

"Do you plan on tell him?" Derek asked.

"I…"

"You don't, do you?" Braeden said. My eyes stung as I shook my head.

"I can't let him get hurt." I choked out. "I know Stiles. If I tell him that my mother found me and is coming after me. he will jump headfirst into this trying to find a way to help. This isn't a fight he can win. He's not a shifter and she's already proven she will kill anyone who stands in her way."

I jumped when Peter's hands covered mine. I looked at him.

"Malia, usually I would tell you to keep this to yourself, to leave him out of this. But I'm not sure if that's the right move here. Yeah, Stiles will probably jump headfirst into this with you, but he also has the backing of his pack, Scott, Allison, Lydia, Isaac, the small one-."

"Liam." Derek offered.

"Yeah him. He wouldn't do this alone, and he wouldn't want you to do this alone either." Peter said sounding like an actual father. I understood what he was saying, I really did but I just kept thinking of Lydia's premonition. I can heal he can't.

"I can't let him get hurt." I whispered.

After leaving Derek and Peter I went straight to Stiles and climbed in through his window. He was just coming into his room scrubbing a towel across his head and another wrapped around his waist.

"Oh, just in time." I said with a grin. He jumped then laughed giving me a quick kiss.

"Yeah, just in time to meet me in the living room. Dad's in the kitchen."

"Do I have too?" I pouted.

"Yes, because if one of us gets naked, soon the other will be and then things happen, and we forget there are other people around." He stated.

"What if I promise to keep my hands to myself." I said reaching for his towel, already breaking that promise.

"Malia!"

I squeaked; hearing Mr. S call out from down the hall.

"How does he know?"

"I don't ask those kinds of questions. Go, I'll be out in a minute."

"Fine." I said kissing him and skipping out of the room.

I spent the rest of the afternoon watching tv with Stiles and his dad who cooked dinner again for us, before Stiles took me home before my 11 pm curfew. Though we still ended up making out in the jeep for about 20 minutes.

Tuesday morning was raining and cold and full of classes I didn't want to take. My first one being chemistry which was bound to be the same kind of torture as math class, I was sure. and to make it worse I was in this one alone. None of the others were in this class. I groaned as Stiles walked me to class and gave me a kiss.

"You'll be fine. I promise."

"You say that, but I don't think its true." I moaned.

"It is true. You can do this. Go, I'll be back after class to get you." he said pushing me into the room.

Fine. But you owe me."

"Duly noted." He smirked, waving, and turning to head to his own class.

I trudged to a table all the way in the back and took a seat next to the only person in there who seemed to be without a partner. I hope he was good at chemistry because I would be no help to him, I think.

"Hi, Theo Raeken." He introduced holding out a hand to shake. I took it giving a firm shake and letting go.

"Malia Tate. I guess we're lab partners."

"Don't worry, I promise I won't bring our grade down to much. I'm decent in science." He shrugged offering a smile. He was cute, with short black hair and pretty sea green eyes. He was no Stiles, but he had a boyish charm thing going for him.

"Well, I am pretty sure I will suck at this so maybe you should be worried about what I am going to do to our grade." I sighed.

"Maybe we'll average it out then." He offered, studying me in a way that I wasn't sure made me uncomfortable or not. The teacher came in then and class started. I noticed Theo kept looking over at me and I worried that he was going to flirt with me. Stiles would freak. I took a deep breath and froze. My eyes snapped to Theo, and he frowned at me. my head tilted as I looked at him. He wasn't completely human. He wasn't wolf either, or coyote. I don't know what he was, but he was something… other.

"You okay?" he leaned over to whisper. I opened my mouth to ask him what he was when the teacher caught my attention.

"Miss Tate, are you listening?" Mr. Turner asked.

"Yep, sure am." I nodded to him.

"What did I just say?" he asked smugly.

"You don't know? were you not listening to yourself?" I asked, making everyone laugh but I was being serious. Why ask me if you didn't even pay attention to yourself. Theo snickered next to me.

"Pay attention Miss Tate."

"Okay." I shrugged. I went back to listening to him explain the class outline he had given us. I don't get the point of that. He's just reading back everything he spent time typing up, copying, and handing a copy to each of us. Wouldn't it just be easier to let us read it on our own?

The bell finally rang for the ending of class and I sighed in relief as I packed up my stuff.

"Malia Tate. I think I heard of you." Theo said, packing his own stuff.

"What?"

"You were in the paper, you were lost in the woods right, for years and recently found?"

"Oh, yeah, I was. I didn't know it was in the paper though."

"Yeah, I thought your name sounded familiar. Really it was the picture of you that was in there. That's how I knew it was you." he said zipping up his bag and hauling it over his shoulder. Then leaned over and whispered, "and that's how she knows where you are."

He smiled, sadly, standing straight again, gave a salute and left, with me staring after him. Frozen with my hand still in my bag. I was still staring at the door when Stiles walked through and right up to me.

"Hey, what's up? You okay?" he asked.

"Huh, uh yeah. Sorry. Just thinking." I said shoving the rest of my stuff in and zipping my bag up.

"About what?"

"How much I'm going to hate this class." I sighed as we passed Mr. Turner who turned to look at me when I said it. I smiled and waved at him while Stiles chuckled next to me.
