This will be something of a montage chapter to show just what Jaime gets up to while she waits for the Master and marks the transition into the modern Doctor Who series.
The Master Chronicles 15 - Passing the Time
The early parts of the nineteenth century were not the best place for the Master to have left Jaime but she did her best and tried to busy herself by exploring all of Blackfield and the grounds before eventually when food became scarce, she risked venturing into the local village.
The primitive surroundings were nowhere near as bad as when she had been left for six years on her own in the eighteenth century but back then she had been a pirate captain and scarcely been any one place longer than a week before moving on. Here she realised she was going to be stuck till the Master returned and who knows how long that might be?
So, reluctantly she went about her work, watching over Blackfield and the secrets it contained. She envied the actives and others that had been hidden beneath it as no time was passing for them. She meanwhile had to endure every single tick tock that went by.
However, it also became apparent quite quickly that the Master had neglected to think of just how she was supposed to survive in this period. She had the manor as a roof over her head but no money for food or new clothes. Job opportunities were she quickly discovered were very limited and very demeaning for a woman like Jaime who came from a time that was much more liberal.
So that left her with one option…crime.
Thankfully since she had no morals to speak of Jaime wasn't in the least bit put off by this, instead she was rather proud of herself when dressed as a highwayman, a bit of outdated perhaps but still a good disguise she managed to rob a few coaches of gold and silver being moved about not to mention a good amount of regular period money.
It would do for a while but Jaime realised that she could do far more with it than just buy food and clothes for herself. She had knowledge of the future and the intelligence to use it, so she stole some more and began to invest. It being the early industrial revolution she put money into steel, railways, shipyards and steam lines not to mention machinery as time went on. It would take time for this investment to bear fruit and doing so quietly without revealing herself was something of a challenge at first but she managed it. Soon she added banking groups to that list after a year of careful cons and theft.
It was on one of those trips to London, while touring the city to see it at this early point in its history that she met her first historical celebrities so to speak. She decided on a whim to see the opening of the King's College and in attendance was King George the IV whose health was already in decline and the Duke of Wellington, the one that only about five years earlier had defeated Napoleon.
She had talked briefly to the pair and been fuming at their rather outdated opinions before reminding herself that neither man was supposed to die yet and so with annoyance had been forced to turn the other cheek and walk away. A later trip to the city let her attend the opening of London Zoo.
Later that year she took the opportunity to attend the Stephenson's rocket as it won the Rainhill Trials, meeting the famous inventor was a much more positive experience as he was eager to speak of engineering and she was able to speak with him on the subject. As was Isambard Kingdom Brunel when she met him on one of his projects.
A short while later she started growing bolder as 1830 came around, discovering an alien device she could use to monitor the systems of Blackfield at a distance and started traveling further afield. She began to invest in other more global business opportunities as she stole some more money. Putting a good amount of money towards Liverpool and Manchester railway, something that would make her a big fortune in time.
Jaime attended the funeral of George the IV that year and in 1831 on her first trip to France she met Victor Hugo and got a signed first edition of his work 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. Also attending William IV's coronation and invested in financial services and pharmaceuticals businesses before finally meeting Charles Darwin and then on a trip to Brighton narrowly dodging the Doctor and his companion Romana who were present.
As time went on, she began to get bolder and went to meet with Ada Lovelace in 1835 and they had a nice long talk about mathematics which both women enjoyed quite a bit before she travelled to America for the first time since being stranded here, going in time to see the Great Fire of New York while investing more in stationery and firearms companies she knew would be huge one day.
She stayed in America for another year, the longest she had been away from Blackfield, going to see the Battle of the Alamo for herself before returning to London in time to witness Queen Victoria's coronation and get a first edition copy of Oliver Twist before becoming a passenger on the SS Great Western for its maiden voyage.
Now over a decade in the past she began to realise that the Master wasn't just going to appear, that by all the evidence he had abandoned her here and while furious at this development she had no choice but to simply keep going, thankful at least for her immortality that he had given her.
So, she started collecting books, coins and stamps as they came out, thinking them an investment for the future at first and later as time went on reminders of the past that she had now lived.
When 1840 came she attended the opening of Kew Gardens, three years later she met Edgar Allan Poe and Mary Shelley, and saw the opening of Brunel's Thames Tunnel and the launch of his new ship the SS Great Britain, engineering marvels of their time. Even speaking with Karl Marx on his idea later that year.
Experiencing history for herself, as it happened rather than in history books.
She invested in the telegraph when it came along and in the jewellery businesses that started in that time before the beginning of 1848, now over twenty years in the past and without the Master.
She decided to spend some time in the USA that year, enjoying the California Gold Rush and collecting some nice bits and pieces from wars around the world, something she would continue to do as the years went by. It was at this time that her investments started to make money and she began gathering her own fortune which she would add to with occasional theft as a girl had to stay in practice Jaime thought with amusement.
She even saved Queen Victoria from an assassination plot in 1849, the Queen was quite grateful for it and even made her a Dame for her efforts. She would end up doing some jobs for her in the years to come, the sort that didn't get mentioned in the history books which suited Jaime fine and made her feel excited to have a hand in effecting change.
The next couple of years were quiet as she went about her business, investing in department stores and newspaper companies before attending the opening of the Crystal Palace and the Great Exhibition in 1851 and the Brighton Pavilion later that year before seeing of all things a gigantic Cyberman appear over London, she was able to avoid the Doctor who had apparently defeated the monstrosity with a hot air balloon and a strange weapon of some sort.
In 1854 she invested in the cotton trade which was about to become lucrative and on a trip to the Crimean War met Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. Seeing the Master's wine cellar at Blackfield was rather bare she began to collect wine too to make sure it was filled with the very best.
In 1856 she met Charles Darwin as he published his theory on Natural Selection, even getting a copy signed by him, showing rare mercy and telling him to not give in to those fools who dismissed his work so easily.
She made another trip to America two years later where by chance she ran into Abraham Lincoln, meeting one of her home country's most important presidents had been an experience worth the trip. Maybe that was why three years later she went back to America and disguised herself as a man to fight in the Civil War against the Confederate States, seeing it better to make sure history stayed on the right track. Even being present at the famous Gettyberg Address.
She would later go on trips to meet with Jules Verne, Lewis Carroll and Alfred Nobel before traveling to Germany to see an opera by the famous Richard Wagner.
After investing in some mines which were going to be big earners for her, she witnessed the opening of the London Underground and had a run-in with the Assassins of London Jacob and Evie Frye. She was a little bored after years of warfare and decided to aid the pair in their foolhardy quest to free London from the Templars as their enemy Starrick's efforts were harming some of her business investments. She had of course used a disguise and her skill at deception to stop them realising just who she was in case the Assassins had left anything behind but again it was cool to have a hand in changing the course of history.
Suez Canal's opening in 1869 was the next big event she attended, meeting Leo Tolstoy on a trip to Russia and then later being present at the opening of the first college for women in London. Seeing the coming of the car she invested in automobile companies and oil too as its usefulness was already apparent and would only grow in the future.
When 1872 came in she would make a journey to see the Great Boston Fire and then in 1873 to Austria for the Vienna Exposition before deciding to spend a year touring India.
A few quiet years followed, she was quickly bored and decided out of boredom to set up her own criminal network, connecting with a variety of illegal enterprises. Setting it up kept her entertained before finally in 1877 when she would witness the Satsuma Rebellion in Japan and took back a few souvenirs of her time there before taking the time to go to America to see Thomas Edison make the first phonograph recording. She decided to return to Britain and make sure all was in order at Blackfield for a while before taking a yearlong tour of Africa in 1880 before stealing the Eye of Eden, a fabulous necklace with emerald surrounded by smaller blue diamonds in a gold setting from Lord Brackworth along with his extensive collection of pearl, ruby and sapphire jewellery as well just because she liked the look of some of them.
This was also the year that Queen Victoria recruited her to the newly established Torchwood Institute as one of its first agents. She was capable and it certainly gave her something to do, besides having some alien technology at her disposal was useful.
Later on, a trip to see the 'Old West' for herself she witnessed the shootout at the OK Corral, again having to avoid the Doctor and companions much to her annoyance.
Jaime then went to meet Robert Louis Stevenson and Otto Von Bismarck before travelling to the other side of the world to witness the Krakatoa eruption there.
A tour of Belgium in 1885 led to a meeting with Vincent Van Gogh and then Louis Pasteur in France later than year. 1887 brought her back to London for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and then a meeting with Arthur Conan Doyle before investing in alcohol brands.
She witnessed in the Great White Hurricane of 1888 in the USA, the snow storm that was worse than any she had ever seen. The following year 1889 was a year for travel, while in Paris attending the opening of the Eiffel Tower she had ran into Nellie Bly, the famous writer and had the privilege of traveling with her for at least part of her around the world journey secretly, making sure nothing interfered with her famous dash around the world. After seeing her complete her journey Jaime stole a rare diamond from the Maharajah in India.
After all that she returned to Blackfield for a while, taking it easy before going to Russia to see the first performance of the Nutcracker in 1892 and then going to meet the famous Oscar Wilde in 1893 and attend the World's Fair.
Soon these travels however bored her a little so she decided to go back into the crime world for a bit in 1894 and continue her criminal network's expansion. Jaime planned and executed some of the best and most perplexing crimes that London had ever seen and at last Jaime had been forced to work for her ill-gotten gains due to the pursuit of Madam Vastra with her little gang, not to mention Jago and Litefoot, another pair of alien fighting do-gooders and managed to outfox all of them, even when they joined forces to hunt her down. It must have really stuck in their pride she thought with amusement to have not solved the cases and caught her.
After meeting HG Wells and Winston Churchill while having a small holiday in Cuba in 1896, the following year she met Bram Stoker and witnessed the celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee before meeting Anne Oakley a year later on a trip to the USA.
1899 was a boring year though, full of garden parties, Henley regattas, society balls and country house weekends. The only real highlight was meeting Henry Ford as she checked on her investments and she went all the way to China to see the Boxer Rebellion.
The Dawn of the twentieth century was a strange thing for her as she realised that she had been in one place and time for so long but was cheered up when she met the writer of the Wizard of Oz L. Frank Baum before witnessing the Siege of Mafeking during one of the Boer Wars in Africa.
It was a somewhat grim occasion though the following year when Queen Victoria died something that ended her association with Torchwood, Jaime out of respect for the Queen she admired for her strength had attended the funeral before going off to take some time in the USA and Egypt, meeting JP Morgan and Theodore Roosevelt Jr, followed Howard Carter on his digs the following year.
She stayed awhile in the USA, not feeling it was home anymore as it was hardly the one that she recognised and even if it had, she had been with the Master for far more years before he had dumped her here, she thought with a familiar rage. But her long stay which lasted well into 1903 allowed her to witness the first successful flight of the Wright Brothers and their primitive plane at Kitty Hawk.
1904 was a year that she witnessed the founding of the International Alliance of Women and the first performance of Peter Pan on stage before meeting Virginia Woolf to finish off the year. The following year she travelled to Central Europe and met Mata Hari and Albert Einstein.
In 1907, Jaime travelled to America on the maiden voyage of the RMS Lusitania. It was largely so she could see just what the ship looked like before it met its demise in the First World War which she knew was fast approaching. She was fortunate to meet Pablo Picasso not long after.
After attending the coronation of George V in London 1911 before going again across the Atlantic on the maiden voyage of the RMS Olympic, traveling on the sister ship of the Titanic which was still being built at the time was a little freaky and she felt silly for believing so much in the movies as many things were different. Once in America though she got the traveling bug again and this time decided to go down to South America, joining Hiram Bingham's team in rediscovering the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru.
Returning to the US in time to witness the founding of Universal Studios and toured the Titanic itself before its maiden voyage while the ship was laid up in Southampton. Watching the ship leave knowing such a tragedy was about to happen made her think that if the Master had left her with a sense of compassion, she might have tried to stop it but then again, she felt the timelines converge and realise it was a fixed point. What happened had to happen and stopping it could be devastating.
That was the moment she realised the incredible power that people like her had over history, it chilled her a little at first.
1913, the last year before the 1st World War and she decided to enjoy it by doing some traveling before the war made such things too difficult. She went to Russia and attended the celebrations of 300 years of Romanov rule knowing it would come to an end all too soon. She attended Suffragette Demonstrations but was far too slick to be caught before then going to America to meet Woodrow Wilson and Pancho Villa then travelled to Asia so she could tour China, Burma and Vietnam.
When she returned though she detected alien technology nearby, centred around a Military School for young Boys called Farringham of all places. Scanning around she discovered the Doctor's Tardis much to her own worry as she thought maybe he had discovered Blackfield but eventually when no-one came, she breathed a sigh of relief although she kept watch just to be safe.
A month or so later another alien ship arrived carrying the ridiculous Family of Blood as they referred to themselves, she witnessed the silly scarecrow soldiers they made and as she saw Martha Jones, a maid at the school being stalked by one of the silly soldiers, presumably so the Family could take her as a host and decided to act on a whim. She used her compact laser deluxe to take it out and felt the timeline shift in response although she wouldn't know the importance of this move till years later.
Then the fatal year came, 1914.
She decided to travel to Sarajevo to witness the shooting of the Archduke that had started the whole thing before quickly moving back to Britain to sit out the conflict. She watched the war unfold around the world and went to Russia and Germany to see their revolutions, snagging herself some mementoes while watching monarchies crash and burn. Then finally she was present albeit secretly to witness the signing of the Armistice in 1918, actually in the railcar to see the war end in person and celebrate in London.
Travelling to see the opening of the Panama Canal as the war came to a close, she was nearly killed by the Spanish Flu as it spread before eventually recovering and began investing in film studios as she knew they were about to go big in the future, not to mention she was now making a lot of money from all the investments she had made, enough to do nearly anything she wanted.
In 1919 she witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles before in 1920 when Prohibition came in America Jaime started running illegal booze around to take advantage of the situation and made a pretty penny. She met Agatha Christie that year and Harry Houdini. Agatha had surprised her given how little she believed in herself and Jaime had taken great pleasure in telling her that those who derided her would be forgotten, a footnote in history while she with her legacy in literature would be remembered forever.
1921 was pretty boring although she had a meeting with Charlie Chaplin and seeing famous fashion brands begin to emerge invested in them.
In 1924 she witnessed the first around the world flight and met Babe Ruth in 1926, getting an engraved baseball bat from him.
1927 was a year she remembered from witnessing the Spirit of St Louis flight and meeting Alexander Fleming, before going to South Africa to mine some diamonds. The following year she went to Japan and saw the coronation of Emperor Hirohito before seeing the construction start on the Hoover/Boulder Dam. Knowing the Wall Street Crash was coming she took great care to protect her investments from it as she knew harsh years lay ahead.
The turning into 1930 was a point which brought her back to New York to see the construction of the Empire State Building, the sight of Daleks surprised her and worried her as she had no weapons capable of taking care of them and was looking around for anything she could use before to her great relief the Doctor appeared. She recognised him as the same one she had eluded at Farringham seventeen years ago and more to her shock Martha Jones was with him in clothes more at home in the early twentieth first century. Jaime watched from a distance as he disposed of most of the Daleks but cursed him for letting one escape, taking some of the Dalek style Tommy Guns to ease her concerns.
Later that year she met another female hero, Amy Johnson after her incredible solo flight from England to Australia.
Three years later she went to see Franklin D Roosevelt's speech upon his election as President and took great delight in meeting Eleanor Roosevelt who had to be one of the most enlightened people she had ever met. Unfortunately, later that year she ran in Winston Churchill again and he took note of the fact she hadn't aged since they had met last, knowing his history was far too important to simply kill him Jaime reluctantly leant him her aid from time to time in exchange for him not telling the Doctor about her.
That grated on her but she just couldn't disappear and wait for him to die as he would tell the Doctor if she did and the last thing that she wanted was to have to face the Doctor alone. The Master had told her that he had taken away her fear but when confronted with the idea of facing her Master's rival she felt something deep inside her where all her weakness was locked away. It burned with the idea of facing him after all the Master had told her about him and the power he had, some of which she had seen first-hand in their sparse meetings during the war.
So, to make herself feel less like she was on someone's leash she went to meet Amelia Earhart in 1935 along with being a passenger on the Silverlink Train.
As she watched the Nazis rise to power and the Japanese in the Pacific, she did her best to enjoy the peace while it lasted, being a passenger on the RMS Queen Mary on its maiden voyage and then a year later meeting Howard Hughes and Hedy Lemarr, two geniuses of their time before seeing the Hindenburg disaster first hand.
Regretfully, that was the last bit of freedom she had for some time as Winston forced her to join British Intelligence as 1939 came in and the Second World War dawned. Her skills made her a prized operative that moved backwards and forwards between Britain and Continental Europe even as the Nazi's spread their hold. Stealing secrets, sabotage and assassinations became part of daily life for her which actually made up somewhat for being a reluctant puppet on Winston's strings. She had missed actually fighting a purpose like she had in the Time War and this while nowhere near as large gave her some thrills.
She achieved quite a few medals for her service, most of which was so top secret that no one would ever leave a record of it, not least stealing all the alien technology in Continental Europe so the Nazis couldn't use it to win the war. She was present for the landings on D-Day and for the push to liberate Europe before heading into Germany where she witnessed Germany's surrender before being hurried over to the Pacific to fight the Japanese, standing on the deck of the ship where they too would surrender a year later.
Thankfully Winston finally let her off the leash after she had done her part and she was able to enjoy her own life again, although she had secretly given evidence in the post war trials and met Harry Truman.
She retired to Blackfield for a while before getting back out in the world in time to see the 1948 Olympics in London and then the first meeting of the Council of Europe in 1949. British Intelligence though called her back into action during the Korean War where she had worked behind the scenes again to ensure history stayed on the right course before faking her death to make sure they wouldn't use her anymore.
Returning to Britain she enjoyed the Festival of Britain in 1951 before taking some time in America to meet Dwight Eisenhower, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. Finally returning to Britain in time for the Coronation of Elizabeth the 2nd in 1953.
The next few years made her take some time to herself, climbing many of the world's hardest and tallest mountains including K2 and dealing with her investments not to mention sorting the large collection she had amassed over the years. Taking some time to meet JRR Tolkien, Elvis Presley and Grace Kelly before going to Alabama in 1955, she sat on the bus to see Rosa Parks make her stand against segregation and could swear she felt the eyes of a blonde-haired woman in funny clothes elsewhere on the bus on her. For a moment when their eyes met, she saw old eyes, far older than any woman that age should have and they had a look of pity in them. Directed at her, strangely she reminded her of the woman the Master and her had attacked back in the first alternate universe they'd gone too but it was much too early for her to be to her counterpart in this universe.
The Doctor she thought realising just who she was with worry only for the Doctor and her three companions to leave without saying a word, that unnerved Jaime who quickly fled back to Blackfield, sure the Doctor was following her only for nothing to happen. Still, it took her awhile to get up her courage to go out again, only just in time to attend first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and meet CS Lewis the same year.
She got out more as time went on and there was no sign of the Doctor, meeting the Beatles and Charles de Gaulle and then Audrey Hepburn before taking a tour of Tibet and venturing high in the mountains to see some of the great peaks and temples that were up there.
When at last the 1960s rolled in she felt free and able to enjoy herself properly again without fearing that that Doctor would turn up any second. She went to see the first Particle Accelerator open at Cern in Geneva before meeting John F Kennedy, returning to Britain though she was surprised to see an Sontaran stalking a Virologist Professor Lavinia Smith and her young niece Sarah Jane Smith. Out of curiosity she had taken the stupid idiot prisoner and with some quite funny jokes at the 'Glorious Sontaran Empire' managed to get him to boast as to why he was stalking them.
It seemed in the future the Sontarans had managed to capture a time ship from another species and had the brilliant idea to use it to prevent past defeats. Specifically, they had chosen to come here to kill the young Sarah Jane Smith as she would be a key figure in two defeats inflicted on them by the Doctor. So, they wanted to kill her now so those defeats wouldn't occur, caring not at all about the potential consequences of messing about with history, not least of which being their own. She had nearly laughed herself silly at how stupid they were and why anyone thought they were the best soldiers in the galaxy she couldn't understand. She took great pleasure in driving a screwdriver down his probic vent and killing him before trying to retrieve the time ship for her own use. But again, the stupidity of the Sontarans stayed true to form as their bad handling of the machine and poor maintenance had resulted in its destruction the moment that she had tried to get it moving, Jaime had barely gotten away with her life and angrily raged about for a while, her only consolation that she had was that she had managed to get her hands on some Sontaran weaponry for her trouble.
1961 though brought her some good times, she saw the first public performance of the Beatles at the Cavern Club in Liverpool before witnessing Yuri Gargarin's first space flight and then the construction of the Berlin Wall.
She took a holiday in the Caribbean for 1962, watching the Cuban Missile Crisis unfold and seeing for herself how close the world had come to destruction worried her a great deal, to cheer herself up she went to see the first James Bond movie Dr No premiere. Travelling around the world again to meet Martin Luther King Junior, seeing his famous speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and then seeing President Kennedy's assassination in Dallas that year.
Returning to London she was shocked to detect alien energy readings in Shoreditch and worse saw the Daleks again although it was clearly a pre-Time War Dalek judging by the White and Golden casing, she used her photon cannon she'd kept from her travels with the Master to destroy one, allowing a strangely dressed man with a red umbrella and a girl in a bomber jacket to escape, not knowing at the time that it was the 7th Doctor and his companion Ace.
1964 was a year for meeting famous people as she met the first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova, attend the first concert by the Who then followed by Richard Burton, Sidney Poitier and Elizabeth Taylor before Jaime decided to tour Japan for the rest of the year.
She attended the funeral of Winston Churchill in 1965 and then meeting Jim Clark before investing in casinos were her main memories that year. That and witnessing a very excited pair of adults running around Trafalgar Square for some reason and then seeing the WOTAN incident the following year then a pair of young people disappearing into a vanishing police box in London with someone that she believed to be the 1st, Doctor.
She did little but watch for the following years, seeing the Bee Gees in concert, seeing the first Saturn V rocket launch before meeting Led Zeppelin and Richard Nixon before things finally picked up in 1969.
Seeing the Woodstock Festival for herself, traveling on the first flight of the 747 Jumbo Jet and enjoying some looting during the Great Intelligence's attempt to invade London that year and seeing the Moon Landing for herself. Although she did find herself with bloodied knuckles for a reason she couldn't remember.
The early years of the 1970s were fairly dull for her, broken only briefly by the exciting news that the Master was back but much to her dismay she realised it was a previous version of him so for his own temporal stability, she couldn't make contact, so she kept to the side-lines. It was so dull in fact that she decided to pull a big robbery of all the safety deposit boxes from a bank in New York, totalling nearly five million dollars of merchandise and a lot of family heirlooms, important documents and blackmail material which she was able to make good use of. After that success she laid low for a while going to see Abba and Slade, dancing at their concerts before sticking around in London 1974 to see the dinosaurs that appeared there and then meeting Emma Grayling and Alex Palmer when she passed by their home.
It was also the time that she decided to start a special business for herself, she rather like Sherlock Holmes had set herself up as a consultant, but rather than being a consultant detective, she became a consultant criminal, a fixer that could help other criminals plan and execute jobs, largely for the challenge but also for a cut of the profits or a fee. Something that would earn her a very good income once she got set up.
Watching the movie 'Jaws' being made was her summer in 1975 before a year later taking the first flight of Concorde and seeing the Loch Ness Monster appear in the river Thames and being present on the set and premiere of 'Star Wars'.
Knowing video games would be big in the years ahead she invested in them before meeting Ronald Reagan before taking a nice holiday in Paris, she detected time energy much to her surprise and upon investigating discovered Scaroth's little side line. She took a great deal of pleasure after the Doctor had dealt with him in looting his private collection including his copies of the Mona Lisa and taking it for herself although she left one copy behind to maintain history.
The beginning of the 1980s was a boring time, she had little to do at first investing in professional sport teams, in music brands and telecommunications, she did run into a younger Nyssa and her friend Tegan and have dinner in Amsterdam, making her laugh she knew the future of Nyssa who was still sleeping underneath Blackfield. She attended the Live Aid Concert and joined the crew of the ship responsible for finding the wreck of the Titanic.
1984 did bring some excitement as she posed as an Icelandic woman who helped a UNIT officer Major Whittaker in stopping an invasion by a trumped-up race of fools called the Dominators and their stupid robot servants the Quarks. She took the time to set up some inside sources with UNIT and Torchwood to make sure they weren't a threat to her.
This proved very useful a year later in 1985 when she discovered Cybermen crawling around the sewers of London, she saw the fashion less 6th Doctor leave in his Tardis with their leader before she decided to eliminate those left behind since she really didn't want to have to deal with a Cyberman invasion. Taking some laser guns, she went down there and disposed of the remaining Cybermen down there and destroyed their surviving equipment, although the arrival of Mondas a year later made even her wonder if the Cybermen would ever take the hint and die out. She did make one acquisition of Cyberdyne Systems and dismantled the company's AI program to make sure there was no chance of Skynet as it became known from ever coming to be.
Jaime enjoyed the 200th Celebration of the French Revolution in Paris in 1989, enjoying the fall of the Berlin Wall which given she had been there when it was built made her feel a little old but smirked as a feeling of superiority came upon her, empires rise and fall but she endured.
1990 gave her a near miss with the Doctor at a Barry Manilow Concert in Madison Square Garden and she decided to go and meet Nelson Mandela and then witness the Gulf War in 1991.
She even mounted one of the biggest heists in history when she stole the private art collection of Lord Ernest King-Stapbleton, a rich entitled prat who had made a fortune in illegal drugs and one she took great pleasure in tearing apart before drowning him in the freezing Bering Strait.
The rest of the 90s though was relatively dull, she was tempted to go and see her younger self back in the US but knew better than to risk it, the paradox could be huge and so she stayed away.
Finally, though came the dawn of the year 2000, she was in Sydney Australia, watching the celebrations for the Millennium.
She was growing weary of the world she thought as she watched the fireworks, not as eager to get involved now. She did jobs to keep her skills sharp but after a gold bullion job around Turkey in 2001, one where she managed to steal 35 million dollars' worth of gold, she started to realise that even crime now failed to amuse her.
She was depressed at that; she wasn't one for grand plans like the Master and ruling the world seemed like a lot of work. She tried to take her mind off it with a vacation of Hawaii, doing the same in 2003 this time in Miami where she took her time to go shipwreck hunting, tried and mastered golf, won some street races, enjoyed some water sports, explored the Everglades, spent time on the beach and finally enjoying Cuban culture. But still her lack of interest caught up with her.
She had mastered all kinds of Martial Arts, nearly every sport and crime. She's seen every Olympics and Winter Olympics not to mention many Wimbledon events, World Series and Superbowls. She'd competed and won many races over the years, attended courses and gotten qualifications in quite a few subjects even Irish Literature just like she had wanted before all of this. Written a few books and screenplays just to pass the time. Even become a master chef.
She'd learned to mimic and throw her voice which gave her a laugh when she used it to confuse people, created one of the biggest fortunes the world had ever seen not to mention a huge collection of bits and pieces from across the world and through the centuries, a collection of first edition books. She had safehouses, drop boxes and hidden accounts in every country of the world, not to mention a huge and highly profitable investment portfolio.
She had mastered all her abilities and even her powers, her Eagle Vision which she got from the Isu DNA the Master had infused into hers had matured to Eagle Sense long ago not to mention she could easily dilate her own perception of time. All the games of luck she knew by heart and had won in all casinos in the world from Monte Carlo, Las Vegas, Macau, Atlantic City, Melbourne, Aruba, San Jose, Paris and London.
And all of it was now boring to her, something she did merely out of habit now.
But things did pick up in 2005 when the Autons made another attempt to invade Earth, she enjoyed killing a few before it regrettably ended, she took the time to put a few projects to advance her companies before the Slitheen tried to irradiate the world for profit and saw the Doctor's handiwork, she almost decided to go and fight him to try and break her boredom. However, she wasn't that keen to fight the closest thing the Master had to a rival so instead she decided to plot a little heist to relief her boredom.
Caribbean Sea…August 23rd 2006…
The overly large and ridiculously elaborate superyacht sat anchored off a small island as it waited for the supply boat carrying its provisions to arrive. Always in international waters to avoid legal entanglements as it had a rather impressive and illegal cargo. Not only were there a number of highly valuable paintings that all came from the black market or had been stolen on the orders of the boat's owner, but there was a collection of rare and incredibly valuable black opals, some set-in jewellery that was extremely expensive. Much of it was stolen like the paintings but some he had bought as liquid assets.
The owner himself was hardly ever here, like many people who had such superyachts he rarely had the time to enjoy it or if he did, he was never there. But it was still kept fully fuelled and equipped in case he ever did decide to visit or if they ever needed to move it for legal reasons.
The barge carrying the supplies arrived much to the relief of the crew who had been wondering when they were going to be resupplied, they lived on the boat so it was rather important to be regularly restocked.
However, clinging to the outside of the barge Jaime was silently waiting for it to stop before leaping off the side and onto the deck of the yacht in a single effortless bounce. She checked her surroundings carefully with all her senses to make sure she was alone before pulling down her balaclava and moving along the deck while the crew were distracted by the cargo being off loaded. She scaled the deck easily and managed to reach the security office before without hesitation stabbing the security guard in the back, silently ending him.
With that done she worked quickly and disabled all the security systems and communications, just to make sure there was no interference.
She moved from there and down the main cabin where the four other members of the crew had gathered, she moved like lighting with her hidden blades as deadly now as they had been back when she first got them, cutting each of them down in rapid succession.
She didn't care much as the Master's emotional inhibitor was as strong as ever, she wasted no more time with them before heading to the vault and pulling out a laser screwdriver, she fired out the high-powered yellow beam which started slicing through the steel like a hot knife through butter.
The door soon fell off and she got her look inside, smirking to herself as she saw the paintings and jewels. Putting down her backpack she pulled out the water proof bags for the paintings and putting the jewels in her backpack. Carrying them out she pressed a button on her special pad, summoning her own boat by remote control. A little alien technology went a long way Jaime thought with a smirk.
When her boat drew up alongside the yacht, she quickly moved the paintings and jewels over before throwing a bomb onto the now lifeless super yacht before taking manual control and driving away before it detonated, sending a massive explosion through the yacht and erasing all evidence she had been there as it sank.
Jaime pulled off her balaclava, enjoying the feeling of success for a moment before sighing knowing it was now too easy for her. She needed a bigger challenge and honestly, she missed the Master, when he had been around, she was always being challenged by him or the schemes he created.
Blackfield, United Kingdom…December 25th 2006…
But as she was watching the TV at Blackfield Christmas 2006, seeing the fall of Harriet Jones the telephone next to her started ringing. She was perplexed by this as in all the years she had been here no one had ever called here, no one knew the number.
As she went to answer it, she had no idea just who was waiting for her on the end of that phone line, the day when all her years of waiting would finally come to an end.
The Day, just as 2006 came to a close, when the Master returned.
