- Joyful Wild :)

TOGETHER

Kalmar stood at the balcony of his room and breathed in the chilly, fall, morning air. He looked up to the clear blue sky and thanked the Maker for the blessings he was given throughout his life. His loving brother had returned, he later got married to a wonderful lady named Galya, he also had two children, he also had a niece and a nephew, and his family was all together again. Well for a while. As Kalmar grew so did his kingly duties which meant he got very busy. Especially around fall where they had many fall festivals. He had to go from one place to another and as the Trone Warden Janner had to go with him, keeping his brother from his wife Sara and his daughter Wendolyn. At first Kalmar thought it would mean more time with his brother, but it was proven wrong. Kalmar had to focus on the meetings and the rest of his tight schedule. And whenever they got back to Castle Rysen Janner went straight to training with Wendolyn, Artham and Kalmar's son, Davion. Then after that, more royal things that had to be attended to.

He remembered when life seemed almost easier, despite all the hardships that he had to go through. But he thought about the Igiby Cottage and the Dragon Day festival. Even though there were Fangs all around him he was still happy in that little town. The games he played with the other kids, and the shops that he would run around in. Kalmar smiled admitting the fact that he could be a handful at times. He remembered the time he went back to Glipwood when he was fourteen years old. The Wingfeathers had gone back to see the town and was able to play Zibzy again with the same kids that he would play with when he was eleven. It almost made him want to cry from the memories. Thankful and joyful for the memories that the Maker allowed him to make but, a little bit sad that it was gone. Kalmar sighed.

"Kalmar?" A voice came from behind him. He turned around to find Galya standing there looking concerned.

"What's wrong?" Kalmar asked as he walked up to her and gave her a hug.

"I was going to ask you that." She said looking up at him.

"I'm fine."

"Are you sure? You look...sad."

"Oh, I'm just remembering."

"About what?"

"When we all would be together, and we all would have such a good time together as a family."

"Oh" Galya put her hands and the sides of Kalmar's face, pressed her forehead against his and looked into his eyes. "Is that what's bothering you?"

Kalmar shrugged. "Maybe. It's just lately everything's been getting busier and busier. And there have been times where I had a good time with somebody, but it would be nice if we were all together in the same place at once. Janner, Artham, and Davion have training, I've been having one meeting after another not even enough time to teach Madia how to be a Queen. Leeli's busy with her things and I don't even get to see you as much as I used to. And I am sorry."

Galya gave Kalmar a kiss and brought him into a hug. "It's alright love. I know you're super busy but maybe we can try to find a day where we all can be together and do something together."

Kalmar nodded. "That sounds like a good idea." Then a knock came from the bedroom door. "Just a minute." Kalmar called. He had almost forgot that today was another busy day full of kingly duties...again. Forget. Kalmar thought as got himself ready for the day. That's what I need to do. Find a day where we can be together and forget about the business. Just for one day. Maker, please let it be so. Kalmar walked out of the door he found Janner there waiting patiently. "Sorry if I interrupted anything." He said.

"No, it'll be okay." Kalmar said as they walked down the hallway. "Let's just get this over with." Once they turned the corner a little girl at the age of seven came running down the hallway with a smile on her face and hope in her eyes. Kalmar smiled at his little girl. She had brown curly hair like him, but it was shiny and soft like her mother. She was energetic like her father and her laugh filled the place with joy like her mother. Once Madia, for that was her name, got close enough she jumped, and Kalmar caught her and spun her around as she laughed. Kalmar's heart filled with joy at the sound.

"Daddy, can you play with me today?" Madia asked with hope growing in her eyes. Kalmar's smile slowly left at the realization that she didn't understand the busy part of being a ruler yet. He set her down on the floor and dropped to one knee. "I'm sorry Madia but I've got to go to a lot of places today."

"Again?" Madia asked. Kalmar didn't have to see it in her eyes to know that those few words broke her heart. Even with the apology. Her eyes that were once filled with joy and hope were now filled with sadness.

"Yes, again."

"But Daddy, you had to go yesterday and the day before that and the rest of the rest of the days before that." Her voice cracked and tears threatened to spill but she refused to let them fall. Kalmar quickly pulled his daughter into a tight hug knowing that he would be late for the meetings but at this point Kalmar didn't care. His daughter was in need of a father and the Maker made him her father so if he had to sit there all day just to keep her calm and happy then so be it. And he knew that Janner wouldn't go against it but even if he did Kalmar would be stubborn and not move an inch. He looked up at his brother who was looking in his direction, but Kalmar knew that Janner was in another world. The same world that he was in. One where they all could be together with no worries. "Daddy, when will we ever be able to have fun together again?" Madia cried quietly into his shoulder.

"I don't know Maddie. But I'll do anything I can do to find a time where it can just be us."

"Promise?" She asked looking up. Everyone always told Kalmar that Madia looked like him, but Kalmar only saw Galya in her.

"I promise." He said with a smile. Madia smiled too and wrapped her little arms around his neck. Kalmar gave her a kiss before tickling her and stopped when she started kicking and squealing very loudly. Kalmar stood up again and said, "You know, your mother is in our bedroom maybe you can see if she can play with you." Madia smiled at her father. "Ok." She said in a small voice then she ran off. Kalmar looked back at Janner who looked at him, this time he wasn't in his own world. "Ready to go?" Kalmar asked.

"Yeah." Janner said sadly while walking down the hallway. As the day went on Kalmar did his best to focus which he succeeded but deep down in the back of his mind was his daughter's plea of spending time with him. When he was halfway through the day one of the royal officials, named Ilham, tried to lighten his mood by telling funny stories. It definitely had an effect on Janner, but Kalmar was deep in thought.

"So, what did you do that night?" Janner asked as they walked down the steps from the town hall.

"Oh, it was a wonderful night." Ilham said. "We all played games and ate food and danced and played music, OH we even had a bonfire it was amazing I tell you." Kalmar looked up from the ground and stared with big eyes and the biggest smile came on his face. "A bonfire?" Kalmar asked.

"Oh yes it was the best birthday a child could ask for." Then Janner and Ilham stopped and noticed Kalmar's face. Kalmar slowly turned to them. "You said a bonfire?"

"Yes." Ilham looking confused. But Janner only looked concerned because normally it was a sign that Kalmar was about to do something, but he wasn't going to tell the full idea, yet.

"Ilham you genius!" Kalmar said shaking Ilham a bit.

"Kalmar, what is going on in that crazy head of yours?" Janner asked.

Kalmar started to pace in front of them looking at the ground. "Ilham how many more meetings do we have left?"

"Well, we have five left today and tomorrow we're scheduled for three more." Ilham said.

"What if we finished all of those meetings today?" Kalmar asked.

"WHAT?!" Janner and Ilham both exclaimed.

"Kal, some of those meetings are going to take at least two hours and that's eight meetings. If you want to finish all of those meetings today, we're going to be here all night!" Janner pointed out.

"He is right." Ilham "We might have to skip lunch maybe even dinner."

"Then that settles it!" Kalmar announced.

"Kalmar are you okay?" Janner asked. Kalmar never liked skipping meals.

"I am amazing!" Kalmar exclaimed. "Ilham, I want you to start telling everyone we're meeting with to push everything an hour early so that we can get things done as soon as possible then, go to the places that were scheduled for tomorrow to move them to today. And if they ask tell them that if we can get everything done today and make the final decisions for upcoming events then if they choose to, they can start things early or spend all day with their families."

"And what will you choose?" Ilham asked.

"Well, I think I'm going to decide to stay home with my family what about you Janner?" Kalmar asked.

Janner only stood there in surprise, "To be honest that is the craziest and yet the best idea ever."

So, even though it took all day and late at night the meetings were done. Once they got back home everyone was worried about why they were gone for so long and loved Kalmar's plan. First, he woke up and spent the morning with Galya, then Davion and Madia woke up and Kalmar told them the plans for the day, and they jumped up and down with excitement. Kalmar was filled with so much joy that he couldn't stop smiling. Then he prepared everything for that night.

Everyone gathered around and started the bonfire. The kids played together, Leeli played her music while everyone danced and laughed. Then they all would tell stories. The kids would make up the wildest stories their imaginative brains could think of, Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli would tell stories from the war and Glipwood. And Nia would tell stories of what life was like before the fangs. Then a surprise came to visit. It was two figures in black cloaks. Everyone froze and stared until their hoods lifted off their heads. Then all the kids exclaimed "AUNTIE MARALY! UNCLE GAMMON!" Even though they weren't related to the Wingfeathers by blood the kids loved them as if they were.

Yes, it was a happy night for the royal family and their friends. Kalmar looked around at it all and took a deep breath and thanked the Maker for the wonderful blessings that he didn't deserve but, He gave them to Kalmar anyway. And Kalmar even thanked the Maker for the hardships in his life. During the storms of his life, it was hard to see why the Maker allowed them to happen. And now at the age of 30 he finally understood. And for the first time in what felt like forever he laughed with joy. Joyful to see his family all in one place.
