Rhinebeck, New York, 1994.
The ringing was driving her insane. Slowly opening her eyes irritably, Marie Kessler realized she had been rudely awakened from her dream about what her wedding night with Farley would entail. Unfortunately for her, Farley was a heavy sleeper, and it was up to her to answer the phone. Grumbling slightly, Marie leaned over his chest, trying to reach the still ringing phone. After flailing her arm for a few seconds, she finally grasped the wretched thing and brought it to her ear.
She hissed into the phone. "What?" she asked. "It's nearly midnight; what could you possibly want at this time of night?"
Silence greeted her for a moment, almost as if whomever on the other end was contemplating their life choices at that moment before coming to a decision. "It's me."
Marie's mood shifted into confusion at hearing her sister's voice over the phone. Kelly wasn't too thrilled about her engagement to a Steinadler, frankly none of her living relatives were. Something about how Grimms were supposed to watch over Wessen, not intermingle with them. So it came as a slight surprise for her sister to suddenly reach out after months of no contact.
"Someone found out about the coins." Marie stilled at those words. "Reed is sneaking Gina to the airport so she can get out of town. I'm going to try and make a false trail for these bastards, but I need you to watch Nicky for me."
"I'll be there in ten," Marie responded solemnly. The Coins of Zakynthos were not to fall into Wessen hands. Gina might be the only one who knows their true location, but that wouldn't stop whoever is after them from going after anyone she interacted with. Marie may have her differences with her sister, but she's still family.
Marie moved like her mind was on autopilot. Slipping out of bed and getting dressed as quickly as she could, she took one glance at her fiancé's sleeping form before getting into her car and driving off.
Farley Kolt stared out the kitchen window, scanning the roads for passing vehicles. He awoke only an hour ago to find Marie had left in the night without a word, most likely to deal with a Wessen causing problems. 'But that's par for the course when you fall in love with a Grimm,' He thought, chuckling slightly.
He met Marie Kessler while she was butchering a Blutbad. She looked at him with those abyss-like eyes and he couldn't help himself but complement her. His tone was dry and she clearly didn't take it well as she charged him. The fight was swift, brutal, and, looking back on it, hot. They ended their fight side by side exhausted. Looking at her disheveled face he knew he wanted to see her again, so he asked her out. She looked back at him in disbelief before accepting. Many dates and fights (against other Wessen) later, Farley knew she was the one for him. One proposal after a particularly memorable bloodbath later, and he's now engaged.
The sound of an approaching truck broke Farley from his reminiscing. He watched as a familiar truck and trailer pulled into the driveway. 'Why is Marie bringing her sister's trailer here?' Farley wondered as the truck came to a stop. An eyebrow rose slightly as Marie reached into one of the backseats and pulled out a scrawny black haired boy. Farley watched as Marie slowly led the boy inside and set him down on the couch before entering the kitchen.
After a moment of silence, Marie looked up with a frown on her face. "Kelly's dead… so is Reed."
Well that explains why Marie left so early, couldn't leave so much Grimm knowledge unprotected. That just leaves… "What about the boy?"
"That's Nicholas, their son. Kelly was worried and asked me to pick him and the trailer up." She never mentioned having a nephew before, but then again family relations became strained when they entered a relationship.
"I take it she was worried for a reason." Farley looked back out the window, a slight twitch as he woged, to get a good look outside. No idea if whatever Kelly got into would follow Marie home. "We should probably move then."
"I'm not sure who was after her or why," the lie tasted bitter on Marie's lips as she continued, "but I'm sure I wasn't followed."
Farley looked back at Marie, not even flinching at seeing two abysses replacing her eyes. "Even still, it pays to be careful."
"There's something to add to that," An uncomfortable look crossed Marie's face, "I think we should split up." There's no telling what Kelly would do if she knew Nick was around Wessen before he could defend himself, even if the Steinadler in question wouldn't dare to think of bringing him harm.
Farley twitched backwards in slight shock, his avian face shifting back to a more human one. "What? Why?"
"I just think I need to keep Nick away from all this," Marie gestured towards Farley, herself as her eyes returned to normal, and the trailer. "I don't think he would do well with our heritage so soon."
"Is he not a Grimm?" Farley frowned slightly in confusion.
"It's too early to tell. It awakens in girls earlier than boys, but I don't think he'd handle our world as well if he knew about it now. I don't want to risk him becoming an Endezeichen Grimm." Farley grimaced at that thought. No one wanted a psycho like that unleashed on the world again. But even still…
"But he does carry the Grimm gene," Farley glanced towards the living room where the boy sat with his head down. "He should know, maybe not right away, but at least so he is prepared for it if he gets it or one of his children does."
"And…" Farley gave Marie a side glance. "I don't see how a potential Grimm would affect our relationship," he said, coughing slightly into his hand. "I mean, what did you think would happen when/if we had kids?" His voice grew softer at the end of his question.
"I don't know," Marie looked back toward Nick and sighed. "It's just all so sudden." Among other things.
"Hey," Farley took a step forward and pulled Marie into an embrace. "Let's just let future worries aside and focus on the here and now." Tilting her head upwards towards himself so he could look in her eyes, Farley continued. "I love you more than anything in the world, Grimm and all. If that means I'm helping to raise another Grimm so be it. It's something I signed up for when asking you to marry me…" at that he chuckled slightly, "maybe not so soon, but the point remains. We are a team and we can pull through this."
Marie looked deep into Farley's eyes. Thoughts about the past few hours and what lay ahead played through her mind. After a long moment, she came to a decision. Kelly might want Nick to be as far away from his heritage as possible, but the fact remains he's in her care now. She won't put her life on hold for her sister, and it won't do Nick any good to go through life blind to what lurks in the shadows of their family. "You're right."
