Author's Note: Honestly, I was just in the mood to write something semi-bizarro here. And since we've all probably seen the whole "Lazy villager breaks the fourth wall" conversation a dozen (or more) times by now, why not go with that? I did have both Lucky and Drago on my island for a while, so I threw both of them together, since clearly two Lazy villagers would break the fourth wall EVEN MORE. Clearly.

Paradoxical

"Hey," Lucky said, tilting his head to the side in thought, "did you ever notice? We don't see Holly and Kevin at the same time."

"Yeah?" Drago replied. "I always figured that one of them was just, like…taking a nap when the other one's up, or something."

"Maybe," Lucky admitted. "But, you know, we see everyone else walking around the island whenever, right? But we never see Holly and Kevin both at the museum, or the Able Sisters', or anything like that!"

Drago mulled it over. That was true… He'd never seen the two human islanders hanging out together. They both talked to their neighbors. They both had friends who came to visit the island. But how often did the two of them talk to each other?

"Come to think of it," he said slowly, "have you ever gone to Kevin's house when Holly's around? Is anyone actually there?"

"I haven't tried that! But, you know, when we don't see them for a while? And it's like they're just…gone?"

Drago nodded. "What if they're just gone when the other one's here?"

"Maybe! We gotta try that next time we see one of them. Let's see if the other one's actually taking a nap!"

Drago yawned. All this talk of naps was making him sleepy (and a bit hungry, to be honest)… And that suddenly reminded him of the last weird dream he'd had. Who knew if it was related—but it sure felt related!

"Hey, you ever had one of those dreams where the island isn't real?"

"Huh?" Lucky blinked, and then laughed. "Oh, yeah! I have those dreams all the time. The ones where we're all just part of someone else's game, right?"

It was so weird that they'd both had the exact same idea… Maybe the island was fake! Were they onto something?

Drago nodded. "Yeah! I was thinking…if the island is just a game…then maybe that's what's up with Holly and Kevin."

"What do you mean?"

"Well…what if the reason we only see one of them at a time is because only one of them can play at once?"

"Uh-huh…"

"That would explain so many things! Like, they have to give the game to each other… And when they're both gone?" Drago paused for dramatic effect. "That means both of 'em are playing other stuff instead!"

"That makes so much sense!" Lucky agreed. "And it'd explain why they always seem to know what the other one's been telling us. They must be talking about all of our conversations! That's why they're never surprised when we tell them about their favorite food or sport or whatever!"

They both nodded. This had to be right! It explained so much about their neighbors, and the island in general! And they were the only two who knew the truth. Should they tell everyone else about it?

…Nah, there was no need. After a few seconds of thought, they shook their heads and shrugged.

"Man, we've both been eating too many snacks before bed, haven't we?" Drago said.

Lucky nodded. "Yeah, we know the island's real. So Holly and Kevin have to be real, too, right?"

"Yup! I bet one of them really is just taking a nap whenever we see the other one. Those must be some great naps!"

They laughed it off. The island being fake was just a joke, after all. There was no way that one person was using them for entertainment, let alone two.

Drago really needed to stop eating three jars of salsa before bed. That gave him the weirdest ideas of all.
