A few days later, it was time for the big reveal of their films.
Heather made a big show at how hard at work she was, working in that video editing program they had managed to install on that computer. While it did come with some limitations and tended to crash a lot (which Heather actually had to be held back at one point by Stella), Heather managed to pull through with a lot of determination and willpower.
And coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.
To celebrate the Hedgies' first film festival, they went all out on preparing. They set up some chairs, a screen to watch it on, and RJ even invited Luby's group to watch. Of course the one thing that the other animals immediately took note of was Tiger.
"Uh, that's a cat." Eddie spoke.
"That's almost what I said when we first met." Stella snidely spoke up.
"Why do you guys have a cat living with you?" Diana asked.
"Oh, apparently it's for protection!" Norbert spoke up. "It's a really smart idea because no one expects a cat, actually we should get a cat for defense purposes-"
"Norbert, we get it." Jasper cut him off. "You don't need to go on a ramble every five minutes because these guys just happen to have a domesticated animal for a guard."
"This domesticated animal still has more to offer than you." Tiger spoke up, slowly advancing towards them. The others started backing away in fear almost immediately, and Tiger didn't stop. All those days of getting hurt must've really taken a toll on his temper, and even Verne calling out to him didn't stop him.
"You want to see what I can offer?" Tiger asked, staring daggers at Jasper, who just croaked in fear. He didn't actually die of fright, he actually croaked because…he's a frog. Frog's croak.
English is weird.
Stella stepped in front of him, and put a paw on his head.
"Tiger, we got a movie festival to do, and this won't help." She spoke. Stella speaking sense and not wanting to egg Tiger on? Did they all just step into the bizarro world? "If they make a ruckus, I'll show them why they don't mess with me." Stella would flick her tail up for a moment, pretty much warning the others not to anger the skunk.
Them sitting down pretty much spelled the end for any more potential conflict with Tiger, at least for now. It was perfect timing too, because that allowed Heather to make an announcement. Stepping up onto the makeshift stage (which in reality was just the log), Heather waited for everyone to settle down before making her speech.
"So, I know everyone's excited to watch their movies. RJ, you essentially made Tower Plaza."
"Raccoon Shoot-Out." RJ quickly replied, before putting his arm around Luby.
"Same thing." Heather said, holding back a grimace at RJ's reaction. "Dad, you wanted to make a space opera."
"And I do believe I did a very good job of that." Ozzie spoke up, putting his paws behind his head with a satisfied smirk.
"I wanted to make a horror movie that we couldn't show since the kids and Hammy are here, and Lou and Penny wanted to make a road trip movie." Heather finished. "The reason why I'm saying this is because we ran into a few snags that impacted the quality of the film."
"Heather, you're talented, I'm sure you managed to find a work around, and even if you didn't, you found a way to make it enjoyable." RJ spoke up. This prompted an odd look from Luby, and Heather to…not really be sure what to think of that. She appreciated the complement, however.
"RJ, I unfortunately couldn't edit out the gunshots." Heather started. "They were too loud and kept cutting in during dialogue."
"Not even the magic of editing could fix that?" RJ asked.
"RJ, we're using a free movie maker, the coolest effect there is the fade out transition." RJ would stop speaking after that. "Anyways, Ozzie, I can't edit the aliens onto the film because I couldn't find one that looked good."
"Not even the ones that are realistic?" Ozzie asked.
"Those are the ones that looked good, unless you want to be fighting concept art being dragged around by a cursor." Heather replied. "As for my film, it was coming out fine, but Tiger ran into the camera and caused something to happen to the footage."
"My apologies." Tiger spoke up, while clearly having a pained expression on his face. Heather wasn't sure if it was due to his mishap or his injury. Probably both.
"Lou and Penny…" Heather started. "I'm sorry but I can't edit anything out because your whole movie for the most part was this one conversation."
"What did they even talk about?" Verne asked.
"They talked about…something." Heather replied. "Sorry it's a private conversation." That didn't stop Verne from giving Lou and Penny a knowing look, and based on that look alone, that meant that Verne was going to get to the bottom of this. She could already hear the whole "my tail is tingling" spiel from him.
"That leads to the biggest problem." Heather replied, before holding up some black cup thing that the Hedgie's didn't recognize. They just stared at it, trying to figure out what it was.
"What is that?" Hammy asked.
"It's a lens cap, and it was over the camera this whole time." Heather replied. Much to no one's surprise, it resulted in everyone letting out a collective groan of anguish. All those days of work ruined because no one bothered to check if the lens cap was on.
"So, what, we recorded everything for nothing?!" Verne asked.
"I saved the planet of Prima Donna for nothing?!" Ozzie replied.
"I died in every single movie for nothing?!" Tiger exclaimed.
Not exactly…well only for the second one. Ozzie technically didn't save any planet. Heather actually did get something that she thought was worth more than anything. Hopping off the log, she went over to the laptop that was hooked up to the projector that would've displayed their films and pressed the play button.
Of course, due to the lens cap being on, there was no video, which resulted in a bit of an uproar from the crowd. Putting a digit to her mouth to quiet them, they shut up just in time to hear the quote that inspired Heather to do this.
"Sometimes you don't need to have all these big scenes with car chases, bad guys, or evil monsters, you just need a nice movie to have fun with."
Everyone didn't say a word, instead taking that one quote in. From the looks on some of their faces, they were initially upset that there was no movie to watch, but that all changed with the quote. Suddenly they were a lot more introspective, thinking more about not just the quote, but their movies in general.
When you really got down to it, their movies were inherently not entirely meant to be taken seriously. RJ's movie, as much as it was a shameless ripoff of Tower Plaza, the original movie was just an action-packed romp. It was good, sure, but it was mainly because it was just a fun movie. Ozzie's film was initially serious, but just how over the top the dialogue was gave it a comedic edge, and thus, the film just became something fun to watch. Heather's own film was not exactly ground-breaking, but a classic monster movie was always fun. Penny's and Lou's film had a spin on it, with it being a deep introspective car ride about life after pretty much doing what's expected of you and missing when that wasn't the case…essentially having fun whenever you can.
Actually, that movie that the Hedgies believed should've won the Fry award was a perfect example as well. It had its moments for sure, but for the most part it didn't really shoot for the stars. It was just a fun movie.
"I think that maybe movies are just meant to be fun." Heather spoke.
Once again, silence as everyone just processed Heather's words. Again, a bummer that all their hard work (and Tiger's injuries), were for nothing, but the cynicism wore away. There was truth to this potentially.
"Yeah, you're right Heather." RJ spoke. "We just wanted to make a movie out of spite, but really we should've just…done it for passion and fun."
"Glad you agree." Heather replied. "Now then, could you show me that one video of that influencer having a meltdown?"
Yeah, she still hasn't forgotten about that.
"Of course, it's such a good video." RJ spoke, getting up and heading over to the log to search for the phone. Honestly, it wasn't a good idea to leave it there considering how much stuff they crammed in there. It could've been broken for crying out loud.
"Hang on, I need to record this." Heather spoke. "Just to remember how funny this was the first time around."
"Actually Heather…" RJ spoke, holding the phone and looking at it intently. "You may want to do that anyways, because this is going to be something to remember."
Call her intrigued. Getting the camera and making extra sure the lens cap wasn't on, the opossum started recording.
"So what's going on RJ?" She asked.
"That movie with the animals that we think should've won?" He replied. "It's getting a TV series."
Immediately a bunch of cheers from the Hedgies (even Norbert, but that was probably because he wanted to fit in) erupted. It wouldn't entirely make up for the crime that was giving Dance-Off 3 the award over that movie, but this was a start.
"I can't believe it; it's actually getting a continuation." Ozzie spoke.
"You think that they're going to have more hijinks?" Lou asked.
"I bet they're going to go to other places, like a retail store!" Tiger said.
As everyone was cheering, happy about the news, RJ's expression changed. He was still looking at the phone, but now he wasn't happy. Instead, he was…grimacing.
"Hang on, hang on." RJ spoke. "I misread; they're giving it to Open Season."
Cue the cheering stopping immediately, and everyone going silent for a bit. What a disappointment. Here they were just happy and now they're giving a new TV series to a far inferior version of that animal movie they loved.
Stella of course was the one to break the silence.
"REALLY?! YOU'RE GIVING A TV SHOW TO THOSE SONS OF B-"
Heather stopped the camera before Stella could finish that sentence.
That's another story down! Blood, sweat, tears (mostly on Tiger's end) were shed, but it was all for naught as the lens was still on...or was it.
Also, random Open Season reference.
Now then, there's something I want to announce. For the rest of the month, I'm going to be combining the stories I've written into one story to make it easier to understand chronologically.
Not only that, but I'm happy to say there's only five episodes left of the first season! I can't believe we're getting this far, but hey, it's happening.
Anyways, see you later!
