Kawakami City
At school for once I decide to eat in the cafeteria as I was with Yamato and Kuma-chan. While most of the lunches provided to me and Wanko come from the Temple are bento-style they do change up the menu every once in a while.
Like today's serving was, yaki udon noodles with bits of shrimp tempura, "Aah, Kawakami Temple really outdo themselves everyday. Yamato, try some."
Yamato tried a bite and was hooked if his smile was anything to go by, "That really is good. And those fried bits of tempura really give it a little extra bite to it."
"You should try the lunches here at the cafeteria sometime Nagamasa-san, some of them are cheap but they're all homemade and fresh." Kuma said.
"I think I'm good for now, there's so much on that menu I wouldn't know what to pick for the life of me." I reply.
"Same here. I prefer the simple things." Yamato chimed in.
Kuma-chan then told the unfortunate story about how he had wolfed down the whole menu at school and unfortunately found himself in the hospital.
"I know you like food Kuma-chan, but even too much drinking got the best of the God of War Kenshin… moderation friend, moderation…" I tell him.
"Mmm… but there's just so much good food out there…" Kuma-chan was as resilient as ever.
Just as I was finishing up all I had left were my leftover vegetables, but then…
Whoop!
"Gimme." I heard the voice of Momoyo as she swiped my bowl as I heard her munch on the vegetables.
"*Om nom nom…* Haah… Kawakami Temple's chefs really know what they're doing." She says the same thing I said just a few minutes ago.
"And just what kind of appetite do you have? You finished half-a-bowl of vegetables. What are you even doing here?" I ask her.
"I'm bored, come and entertain me." With that she began to drag me off.
"Hey, don't pull! You guys say something why don't you!?" I yell back but the guys are too dumbfounded in the moment to do anything.
"Ahaha… these last few days Momo-senpai and Nagamasa-san have been a lot closer I must say." Kuma pointed out.
"Yeah… she's really been dragging him around like a dog…" Yamato said but not with his usual gusto.
"It's strange, Nee-san doesn't usually have this must interest in a guy of all people, girls are a different story though… could it be… No, that's not possible, she couldn't be… could she?" Yamato's thoughts were clouded as he watched through the windows of Momoyo and Nagamasa walking together.
By the time we reached the lockers at the front of school we got stopped by one of the freshmen girls, "Ah, senpai!"
She called out to us, "Um, hello."
"Oh, hello there cutie, is there something you needed?" Momoyo ever the charmer introduced herself.
"I was just wondering; I need your help with something. It's about an issue I've been having for a while." The freshmen frowned a bit.
"What's the problem?" I ask her.
"Recently there's this guy who's been trying to confess his love to me over and over again, but he just won't stop." She tells us.
"Have you straight up told him 'No?'" I inquire.
"Y-Yes, but even then he doesn't stop; he's been sending me more letters, and now he's even sending me gifts to my classroom; he's in 2-A, but I don't like him. If you could, I'd like your help in scaring him off if you could." She asked us.
"Scare him off? How?" Momoyo asked.
"Well, I had the idea that if I had a pretend boyfriend maybe he'd back off. Then I thought of the idea when I saw you just now Nagamasa-san, would you pretend to be my boyfriend?" She asked me.
"Eh?! Y-Your boyfriend?!" I ask in shock.
She bows in front of me as she pleads, "I know I'm putting you on the spot, but it's all I had left. I don't want to hurt, just have him back off that's all. If he sees me with one of the school's Elegante Cinque was with me that would be enough, please!" She asked again pleadingly.
Aah, I forgot ever since I'd first came here my popularity had risen to the level that I was now somehow on the level of popularity to be considered one of this schools most popular boys, and they even changed the name of the group to have me involved.
Damn it all… I never wanted this attention to start! But still… I can't leave her like this.
I put my hand on her shoulder, "Alright, when will you run into him next time?
"Thanks!" She seemed thankful, "He normally tries to catch me when school is coming out, if we meet up before then, we can act out in front of him and hopefully that'll be enough. Thank you again, senpai!"
With that she gave me her number and told me she'd mail me when to meet her.
I then felt Momoyo ruffle my hair, "W-what now?"
"Hehe, look at you being popular with the girls, at this rate you'll be my rival in skirt chasing." Momoyo said with a smile and giggle.
"Leave me out of it. I didn't ask for all this attention, they even changed that stupid group's name just because of me. Sheesh…" I say with a groan.
"Well, I hang back just in case this guy gets desperate or sends some goons your way. It'll be a good way to unlimber after a day of school." Momoyo said seemingly happy with something to do.
"If that happens, I'll owe you dinner sometime." I offer her.
"Oh, I like that! Let's hope this works then!" Momoyo said cheerily.
"Hopefully we aren't pushing our luck, I just hope he folds after this. Wish me luck." I tell her with a thumbs up and a wink.
"Yeah, besides you should've seen the look in her eye. She likes you." She told me.
"Eh? I barely know her, why would she…?"
"Because you're handsome and you seem reliable. So go on, lunch is almost over…" Momoyo shooed me away.
"Alright, see ya." And with that I left.
Momoyo all on her own she watched as her protégé headed back inside the Academy in her mind she thought, "Mmmm… why does… why does him getting so popular… bother me? Is it because he's taking away so many cute girls? No… he'd never beat my popularity. But even… he is getting a lot of attention… Aah, who cares…"
It was then she saw another female underclassmen pass her by, "Oh, she's a cutie… Hey there, cutey!"
And so after the final bell rung out, I got a message from the girl from before to meet by the stairs on the first floor.
I headed out to meet with her, there I saw her waiting for me as she saw me she waved, "Nagamasa-senpai!"
But with her instead seemed a group of her friends, "Ah, Kumi you didn't tell us your boyfriend was the Nagamasa!"
"I'm so jealous!" Another girl squealed.
"Nagamasa-senpai, could I have your number?" One asked me pulling out her phone.
"Oh me too!"
"Me three!"
"Ladies please! I'm only one man!" I try to get a word in, as Kumi coughed into her hand.
"Girls, I need him for something important if you'll excuse me, we have to go out." Kumi put on a face and had them stop crowding.
"Senpai, let's go." She offered me her hand and I took it.
"Bye ladies. But…" I held out my phone much to their excitement as they all sent me their respective numbers a few beeps telling me they were confirmed.
"Let's go!" Kumi then pulled on my arm now a bit upset.
"S-sorry, bye!" I turned and waved at the others who happily did so as they giggled.
"Mou, you're supposed to be acting as my boyfriend, not a playboy. But still… I guess that's part of why I asked you." Kumi said.
"Sorry, I find that dealing with that is the best way to end them ever asking again." I reply.
"Hmm, I guess that kind of makes sense, but what about all the attention you might get? Wouldn't that pile up?" Kumi asked.
"I guess so, but again accepting it leads to a more positive outcome then just denying them. So it's a give-and-take really." I answer.
We reached the door to the courtyard, as Kumi breathed in and exhaled to gain her confidence, "Let's do this."
With that we walked out and almost immediately we were seen by A LOT of students, and nearly EVERYONE was whispering now…
"Nagamasa-san has a girlfriend!?"
"But… I thought he and Momoyo-chan…"
"That bastard… I wish he'd just wake up in a coma one day!"
To say it was uncomfortable was one thing, as I looked at Kumi she was also just as nervous with a blush on her face as well.
"S-sorry, you'll probably have a lot of people whispering about you. But I just wanted to say thank you still for helping me." She said with a small stutter and a smile.
"Haha, no problem…" I reply.
Hidden a small ways was a certain Goddess of War herself as she mused at the scene before her, "Haha, look at him he really does look like the protagonist out of a manga… Huh?"
Momoyo looked over to see there was a certain boy and his friends, from the girls description they'd given them before it was him.
"Ah, there he is…" Just a I turned my head Kumi stopped me. "No, if you look he'll get suspicious. Let's just ignore him for now.
"R-Right…" With that we simply kept on walking and talking trying our best to act like a pretend couple.
Eventually the guy saw us; he was of average build, brown hair, green eyes, but just from his aura alone I could tell he was just a step down from the more "noble" types in Class 2-S, thought because of his position he was the best and his standing alone would get him anything.
But even so it would seem my presence didn't faze him as he approached us, "Kumi-san. I didn't think you had company. I was wondering why you were taking so long. Shall we be going?"
"I told you already Watanabe-senpai I don't like. Besides… I'm dating Nagamasa-san." She told him.
"I see that… then Nagamasa-san, would you please let me take care of her? We have plans and…" Just as he reached out I smacked his hand away.
"I think the lady told you to back off, she doesn't want to go with you." I told him sternly, but his smirk told me he wasn't done.
"I assure you this is merely a mistake, Kumi and I have plans. Now hand her over…" Again I smacked away his hand.
"I told you… back off." I told him even more harshly, for a moment he seemed to step back in shock at my anger, but foolishly for what whatever reason he didn't relent.
"Y-You think you can treat me like that? I'm superior to you in every way! You're just a pitiful class F, someone like you doesn't deserve a flower like Kumi, who needs to be preserved." Watanabe said.
"I don't need preserving. I'll date who I want! And who I like is Nagamasa-san! Here I'll prove it!" What?
Then suddenly Kumi cupped my face and brought her lips to mine to the shock of everyone in the courtyard.
I knew she was doing this spur of the moment, but for the sake of the plan I played along. I put my arms around her and leaned into the kiss, and to my own surprise I had to admit she was good, I think at one point she tried to put her tongue in my mouth but she probably did it to give Watanabe a shock.
But that only seemed to enrage him further, "D-Damn you… w-what're you lugs waiting for. Get rid of him and…"
Before he could even do so in a single move the two merely froze in place, "What're you doing you fools?! Get him!"
"Nah man, not with her here! I'm out!" One goon screamed as he ran.
"Same with me!" The other did the same.
"W-where are you buffoons going!?" He screams at them as they flee.
"That would be me…" A solemn voice answers, he turns to see that it's Kawakami Momoyo in the flesh, her eyes serious as she stares at him. "That's my protégé and his date you're threatening. You got an issue?"
She cracks her knuckles and that makes Watanabe finally bend as his knees almost buckle under, "I-I won't bother them again! I swear!" And with that he flees.
"Boring… all bark and no bite. You better thank me protégé, see ya later." With that Momoyo strolled away just as coolly as she'd entered.
"Momo-senpai, really is amazing." Kumi said.
"Yeah, agreed." However, the both of us realized the position we were still in and let go. With red adorning our faces, we left but it seemed that the courtyard was now affixed with talk of Momoyo which gave us the chance to slip.
Kumi and I headed for the Tama River finally with some peace and quiet, "Well that was… an adventure." I said.
"Yeah, I knew he was something, but I didn't expect him to act like that. Also.. s-sorry for that sudden kiss, it was all I could think of in the moment, I understand if you'll…" But I stopped her.
"N-No… it was sudden I admit, but I didn't hate it if that's what you mean. W-well everything worked out for the best. See ya! B-but… if you ever want to hang out again, you have my number!" With that she was gone.
"Well that was something…" I crack my neck, but that's when I felt a familiar presence as it grabbed me from behind.
"Aah, Momo-senpai!" It was the girl herself.
"Ho, ho… How flexible you are ~ Look at you putting the moves on her, bet you probably got a lot of other girls' attention with that stunt. But all in all, you did good. Now then…" Yeah, here it comes…
Without any need to answer we headed for the family restaurant, "Well you did come in and scare off any trouble we had, so I owe you."
"Yay! But that really was easy, I thought somebody going to our school would have a bit more backbone, but that was disappointing." Momoyo seemed unsatisfied again.
"Well it had it's dramatic points, but what's done is done." I replied
"With how fast all three of them ran, I'm surprised punks like them still challenge although from what I've heard most of them are avoiding you after a big fight you had a few weeks back. Something about making… a "Tetris tower" made of thugs?" I inquired.
"Oh that? Ah yes, that was my masterpiece, you should've seen it too they flew away like bowling pins afterwards." Momoyo said fondly remembering that day.
"But with how strong you are it's no shock that people call you the Devil or a boogeyman." I tell her.
She closes her eyes as she seems upset by that, "But I'm so cute…" She seems to sense the presence of the waitress as she makes her order, "Oh, I'll have a sirloin steak, cooked rare. And peach juice too."
"I'll have the mushroom pasta and some kocha tea with lemon please." I give my order as well. As the waitress does so, she looks at me one last time as fixes her hair as she stares at me returning to the counter.
"Ho, ho… look at you already a pickup artist." Momoyo teased.
"Oh please, it's barely anything, and don't came me that." I replied.
"Now that I think about it… you got as many girls who like you as I do my groupies… but even then you're becoming pretty popular at school." Momoyo points out.
"Hah, I've been one for attention, but the way I see it better to try and at least be friendly. No reason to scare'em off you know?" I reply. "I've got so many numbers now, it's crazy to think just a few weeks back the only ones I had we're just the Kazama family."
"Have they told you about anyone strong?" She asks.
"No, not anything like that." I shot down her desire.
"I hate that I have no challengers anymore… there are no good ones." She mused, "I feel like pretty soon I'll have beaten all the best fighters from around the world soon enough…"
"I don't know if there's anyone who can fit your expectations Momo-senpai." I tell her.
"Well… I feel like there is one…" She said. Huh? She wants to fight someone, but won't say?
"Heheheh…" She laughed, she seemed to be in a good mood. "You know Nagamasa, you really have been coming along in your training. But even so, I like that you're not preachy like Lu-sensei, and the old man."
"Well it's just who you are, battle's in your nature." I answer. "The best I can do I feel like is make sure your not in massive debt and graduate with a decent report card."
"Yeah… you hit the nail on the head, I just can't help it. But all they keep telling me is that it's all in my head. It's none of there business at the end of the day, right?" She looked at me.
"Yeah, oh my pasta's here. I heard from Yamato and Kuma-chan that this place has the best noodles and pasta."
"Oh really? Then give me a bite. Two sixths, please." She took my fork and started at my pasta. "Mm…"
With not one slurp she ate it heartily but almost with a set of refined manners, unlike Kazuko who heartily but messily downs her food well… like a dog almost.
"This is really good. Two thirds please." She asked.
"I just ordered this and now you want seventy five percent of my plate? Your steak's here by the way." The waitress then returned with Momoyo's steak and juice.
"Then you can have half of my steak." Then cutting the meat down the middle she placed it on my plate.
"I appreciate what you've done for me. So here, eat plenty of meat." She acted gracious.
"If you were appreciative you'd give me more meat instead of the part with more fat on it." It was around that time a cute girl walked into the restaurant.
We both caught sight of her, "Oh, I like her. She looks nice and soft."
"Every time I hear you like that I'm forced to the side that makes me believe you're a closet lesbian and you just don't know it. But I have to agree, yeah… she is kind of cute." I stole a glance at the girl who was sitting by herself.
"Hmm, I keep telling you I don't like them like that. It's just…" Momoyo trailed off.
Then as I looked over at the girl she waved at our table when she caught sight of us. I smiled and waved back, Momoyo did as well.
"What we're you saying again?" I asked her.
"Oh yeah, I was saying there's no guy…" Then once more we were surprised when I felt a tap on our table it was that girl again.
"S-sorry, but I couldn't help myself, what's your name?" She asked. Both Momoyo and I looked in between each other.
"Well who are you talking too?" I asked.
"You." She said pointing at me. It was in that moment I felt as if something nearby had cracked as I looked out of my side vision and for the first time Momoyo seemed in surprise that a girl was ignoring her.
"O-oh uh… I'm Azai Nagamasa, I got to Kawakami Academy nearby. You?" I ask trying to be courteous.
"I'm Otome. I just wanted to say you're really handsome, do you have some free time later this week? We could catch a movie later." She offered. I was honestly surprised by how forward she was.
"W-well, I don't know really I do have a schedule to follow since I'm a student at the Kawakami temple too." I replied.
"Well then… even I'll give you my number and we can chat another time still." She held up her phone and transferred her data to mine.
"Thanks! See ya, Nagamasa-san." Otome said with a wink as she headed back to her table.
Looking back at Momoyo, safe to say… she was not amused. If the dull, annoyed look on her face could talk.
"Hmmm… you really seem to be popular now aren't you?" She said with an annoyed frown. "You catch anyone's eye don't you?"
"What's that supposed to mean? I was just trying to be nice, I probably won't even have time to ask her anything since my training's been stepping up recently. Even I'm yawning in the morning now to…" I replied.
"Besides, I already told you I have someone that I like and that they go to the Academy… remember?" I reminded her.
She still wasn't convinced, "Besides I thought you said no man could get your attention. What's it take to do that anyway?"
She seemed a little amused now as a smirk returns to her face, "Haha, you looking to catch my eye?"
A bit nervous from her attitude from before and still remembering how conscious of her; I merely replied, "Maybe…?"
"Ooh? Well then, what I look for in a man is… Hmm, well the one most important thing is that he lives up to his words, if he says he's going to do something I expect him to make those dreams and ambitions come true."
That was the same thing that she told Yamato in the original. I knew deep down she was serious about it too, and remembering back…
"Yeah, I've been wondering for a while what kind of goal I even have with all this training. But now I think I know part of it, and that's to live up to the goal Tesshin left me with… to beat you…"
I think back and remember how in the moment I said that in response to Wanko's challenge, but as I've been here; as I've been getting stronger I've never really had a goal to help drive me forward… No ambition behind it, just pure battle drive in a sense.
That wasn't healthy, I knew that from the person sitting in front of me.
But even so…
My feelings…
My ambitions…
I sat there as my fists clenched for the first time as I looked at my own hands and wondered…
"What're you thinking about?" Then a beep from her phone, "Oh, it's a text from Wanko. She's with Mororo."
"They're at the base, and want to know if we'll come." She asks.
"Yeah sure, let's go." I sheepishly agree not fully looking at her
"But first, let's talk a bit longer. Besides, after that moment, I've got something new to tease you with!" She playfully joked.
She was as happy as she could be… little did I know deep inside her heart though…
"Why do I care if he gets a few girls? It's not like it matters… besides he's his own person. Mmm… what's this feeling? It's annoying…"
"But… I can feel he's conflicted about something. Nagamasa, remember that even if your dreams seem unreachable, remember to keep pushing forward… we're all here for you in spirit…"
As for me…
[Play Young Men Should Be Like This – from Majikoi S]
"I now know deep down what it is that keeps holding me back… I always keep comparing myself to what happened before like this is the same story as always… and…
"Even if I know what's to come… this is my story! I'm not Yamato! I'm… Nagamasa Azai!"
"And with that same conviction I take into battle… I'll not only beat Momoyo Kawakami… I'll win her heart as well in my own way!"
"It's decided! Wait for me Momoyo… I'll give you a fight you won't forget!"
In the real world, I finally look up at her and for a few seconds Momoyo's eyes seem to shine as she sees my own.
"Oh, what's gotten into you? You seem a little pumped up." Momoyo points out.
"Yeah, I just realized something was all. And now… I have to put my all into it." I replied with conviction.
"Oh… that again… I'll be waiting." Momoyo replied.
"Yeah…" I said as the both of us lazed about the restaurant we eventually headed for the secret base.
But now… I know what I want!
I won't hesitate anymore! I'll take my dream by the horns and make it mine!
