The gist being that Mahal and Yavanna, creators of the dwarves and Hobbits respectively, come to our world, tell a nerd, "hey, pack a bag because Middle Earth needs you. Save all the ones who die." And then drop her on bilbos doorstep at the start of the hobbit. Only they forgot to tell her that no one speaks english.

Bell-Heather Baggins was a Hobbit. Everyone knows that much. Unfortunately nobody knows much else, including the fact that her name is actually Bell-Heather (Oh Gandalf), that she's a 'she', and that Hobbits are actually spiritually connected to Yavanna and the earth. These seem like important things to know but... oh well, what can you do? It's not like anything will go wrong!

Right before Thorin dies in the BOTFA, he makes one wish. He wakes up the day Smaug attacked. But this time around, he makes things go differently.
