A/N: Thanks to everyone who added my story to their favorites or followed it. Special thanks to Sweeney for reviewing. Here is chapter two :)
When the Straw Hats arrived on the next island it turned out that they came in the middle of a revolution. Nami wasn't even surprised that they got involved in the whole issue, but at least the king was so thankful for their help that he ended up trowing them a celebration banquet. The kingdom was very traditional so everyone had to dress formal for the occasion. It wasn't hard to get Luffy in new clothes, they just told him it was like playing dress up and he was more than willing to do this. Usopp was easy to convince as well, he was even telling them the story how he was invited by a kings before he had met them all, a lie no doubt. Sanji and Brook were formally dressed most of the time anyway and Franky wanted to use the opportunity to try out the suit modification on his improved body. That left only one crew member who strictly refused to dress formal for the banquet.
Zoro only rolled his eyes when he saw how easily Nami had convinced everyone into wearing what she wanted them to. He didn't see the benefit of dressing differently. His clothes were comfortable for fighting and sleeping and that was all they were supposed to be for. A night on deck with training sounded more appealing than some fancy dinner at a palace, so he would do just that. However he didn't consider that Nami wouldn't let him skip the banquet.
The navigator knew that Zoro wouldn't be so easily talked into this as the others had been and she knew that formal banquets were far from what he preferred to do, but she was excited to wear a beautiful dress, dance and just have a great night. Was it really so wrong that she wanted the man, who meant so much to her, by her side? Sure, their relationship was still a secret and none of them had said the three important words yet, but she would love to go to the banquet with him. Considering that, she had to convince him somehow to changed into something formal.
When everyone got ready Nami approached Zoro, who was on his way to the crows nest, probably about to train for the next few hours. Cautiously looking around if no one was watching her, she softly pulled on his arm and made him face her. Before she could even say a word he already spoke up.
"I'm not going to that stupid banquet."
Nami sighed deeply. She had expected his refusal, but that he was already this set on his opinion was disheartening. Normally she would have tried to blackmail him with his debt, but since their relationship had changed she hadn't done that. Now she wanted him to do something because it was her who was asking him and not because she was blackmailing him with his honor.
"It'll be fun." She tried to convince him with a smile, but he only frowned at her. Seeing that this wasn't working at all, she stepped closer to him and leaned up. "Please Zoro, it would really mean so much to me."
"This should convince me?" He asked skeptically, but still lay his arms around her waist and pulled her closer, after he had made sure that no one was watching them.
"There will be sake and me, that are two things you like." She smiled up at him and softly ran her fingers through his hair. She purposely avoided to tell him that he loved alcohol and her, because they hadn't talked about the three important words and she wasn't sure how Zoro would react to them. This was neither the time nor place for that.
"Fine, but I won't stay long." Zoro finally gave in after she looked so pleadingly at him. This woman really knew how to convince him, after all she knew how much he liked it when she played with hair.
"Great." Nami smiled brightly and gave him a quick kiss before she pulled away. "Don't forget to dress formally." She told him when she left the deck.
Sighing Zoro growled at her words. For a moment he had forgotten about that part, but now that her hands and lips weren't distracting him anymore he remembered.
In the end he found himself utterly bored at the banquet and they didn't even have the sake that she had promised him. Frowning at the glass of wine in front of him, the swordsman leaned back in his chair, he wasn't even able to sleep due to the awful music that played in the background.
While Zoro was close to just getting up and leaving, Nami next to him had a great time. She was talking to the two princesses of the kingdom and found herself enjoying the conversation with them. It was rare that she had the opportunity to talk to other girls her age. Sure, she had Robin and she was like a big sister to her, but sometimes she wished that there would be another girl in the crew with whom she could talk. However there was one thing that worried her. She was aware that Zoro wasn't having a good time. It was understandable, seeing that there was no sake, no other swordsman who he could talk to about swordsmanship and it was too loud to fall asleep. All the things he loved, he couldn't do right now and she was sure that he was uncomfortable in the black pants and white shirt that she had forced him into. It looked good on him, but Nami was sure that Zoro didn't care about this fact.
Looking at his frowning face from the corner of her eye, Nami felt almost guilty for talking him into coming here. It had been her that wanted to come here and he had just agreed for her sake. She knew that Zoro would have preferred to spend the night training or sleeping instead of this and still he had come with her. That meant more to Nami than she would let on and it made the guilt she was feeling worse. Trying to tell him how much she appreciated that he was here, she reached out for his hand under the table. When their hands touched and he intertwined them without any hesitation, she smiled slightly, maybe that would help his mood.
The small gesture did indeed made the swordsman frown a little less, but an hour later he had finally enough of the banquet. He leaned over to Nami for a moment and told her quietly that he would go back to the ship. This wasn't what he enjoyed doing. He like the simple things in life, like a hard day of training or the feeling after a good fight with a worthy opponent, but this was more Nami's department than it was his.
The navigator only nodded in understanding and thoughtfully watched him leave. If she was honest with herself all she had wanted to do was spend time with him in such a nice setting. It was rare that the Straw Hats got invited to such beautiful places and it was the first time that they had such a formal dinner. She was sure that Zoro had wanted to go back to the ship since they had arrived and he had found out that there was no sake, but he had stayed for her. Maybe now it was time that she returned the gesture.
When Zoro was back on the Sunny he immediately changed out of the uncomfortable clothes and took a bottle of sake out of the fridge. It had taken him some time to find the ship, Franky must have moved it again before they had all gone to the banquet. Finally sitting down on the deck against the mainmast, he downed the sake in one big gulp and breathed a sight of relief. This was the best part of the evening. Maybe it would be better if a certain person was here as well, but then again she was probably still having fun on that boring banquet. As if she had heard his thoughts, the woman in question appeared next to him, still dressed in her formal dress and with a bottle of sake in hand.
"It turned out that they had sake, they just didn't serve it."
"You stole it." It was more a statement than a question, but Nami answered anyway.
"Of course." She smirked at him and sat down next to him.
Zoro mirrored her expression and took the sake bottle from her to take a gulp of it. His previous thoughts had been wrong, this was the best part of the evening. However he still wondered why she was here, not that he was complaining, but she had seemed to have fun at the banquet. When he voiced his thoughts, she smiled at him before leaning her head on his shoulder.
"It did enjoy it and I'm glad that we went, but I saw that you weren't happy there. After you came with me it's only fair that I left with you." At her words, she felt his strong arms go around her and he pulled her closer to his chest. His embrace and the knowledge that he indeed only went to the banquet for her, gave her the courage to say her next words. "I just wanted to spend more time with you and a banquet seemed like a romantic thing even with so many people around. However it turned out that just sitting on our ship together drinking sake is better."
Nami nervously bit her lip after these words had left her mouth. Maybe she had said too much and he would laugh at her. However whatever reaction she had feared for never happened and instead she felt him gently pulled her face closer to his so they could look into each others eyes.
"I think so too."
With that said he closed the gap between their lips. Nami smiled into the kiss, that evening surely hadn't turned out how she had planned it, but then again this was so much better than anything she had imagine. Finally they were able to spend more time together and that everyone else was still at the banquet and wouldn't be back for a while was just a bonus.
