Author's Note: This Story is a Sequel to my other Valhalla OC fic, "Argr" and the fourth one in the series after "Kingdom's End" (Gosh how did this end up with 4 stories, there's not even a word to describe what a four series book is). Anyway this is a little fix on my behalf based on the feedback I got from one of my readers.
Jikanet-Tanaka, if you see this - this fic is for you. You wanted Osmond to see how strong his Father really was so I decided to expand on it and make him see how strong Oswald really was, literally. So this is for you. Hope you enjoy along with everyone else!
Trigger Warning: Hints on Depression (from Eivor's part) It's not major but there are minor hints on it, if this is a triggering point for you you have been warned.
Osmond hovered by Valka's hut nervously. He never really believed in dark magic or the Norse gods, having been influenced by the Christian Church just like his Father once was.
However he was here. After he came back from Dunwich, initially furious after finding out the truth of what Oswald did to his Mother and him, sixteen years prior, Valdis had insisted him go there to further understand his Father.
He didn't want to go, but he felt guilty. Valdis was furious when she found out that he had tossed the diary in the sea.
"How could you? That was the only thing that was left of him and yet you threw it away like it meant nothing!"
Osmond had tried to protest, in a weak attempt of defending himself, but Valdis was having none of it.
Instead he had ended up with a door slammed in his face. Hours later, Valdis calmed down and during dinner had a heart to heart with Osmond.
"If you are feeling guilty for what you did, I suggest you go to Ravensthorpe tomorrow morning and seek out a woman called Valka. Perhaps she can help you see your Father's pain more"
And now here he was, outside the shabby hut by the waterfall, about to knock.
Pushing his thoughts away he knocked, rolling his eyes. He couldn't wait to get this over with.
Here goes nothing.
He waited for a bit, hearing no sound.
Just like what I thought. Abandoned. Like the rest of this place. Why did Mother even suggest me to come here? I'm just wasting my time here.
Just when he was about to walk away and give up, Valka opened the door looking weary.
"Who are you? In case you haven't realised it's not opening time. Ravensthorpe no longer is open for business anymore, not since we lost our Jarlskona many years ago"
"Are you Valka? And I'm Prince Osmond, the surviving son of the former King of East Anglia, Oswald and Son of Queen Valdis"
Valka's eyes widened "Osmond? As in Oswald's boy? It feels like it was only yesterday when he was still here. Eivor would use to talk about him all the time, bless her"
Osmond nodded "Yes. That is also the reason why I am here. Valdis said you could help me in seeing what my Father saw the day he died. She said it would help me understand more if I saw with my own eyes apparently"
Eivor? I remember her that Norse Warrior that Father Cheated on Mother with. Valka knew her?
Before he could ponder any longer, Valka spoke, interrupting his thoughts.
"That I can help you with young man. Come in" Valka gestured
Osmond walked in observing his surroundings, frowning.
Around him was a table filled with various potions and mixtures, along with dust that was gathering on the walls. It smelt musty and weird at the same time.
He nearly hit his head on the hanging Skeletal ornaments that were dangling from the ceiling.
"Make yourself at home" Valka gestured as Osmond sat down on a thin mattress that was on the floor as Valka mixed some purple looking liquid with a pestle and mortar.
He cringed at the smell nearly coughing. This was certainly different to the smell of the holy water in the church that he was used to smelling every week.
Thankfully, Valka didn't notice continuing to mix.
"Eivor used to come in here all the time, I gave her all sorts of potions" Valka started, gaining Osmond's attention once more.
Eivor? That woman again. He tried to fight back the anger. Getting angry won't help, what's happened has already happened. Perhaps if I listen, I can know more about this other woman that Father liked. Valka seems to know a bit about her.
"You knew Eivor? What was she like?" He asked curious to know more about her
Perhaps I can find out what exactly it is about her that Father liked so much.
Valka nodded looking at Osmond before continuing to mix once more.
"Yes. She was a friend of mine. She helped me build this hut. I knew her for many years even when she lived in Norway. Eivor was a strong headstrong woman who would do anything for anyone without expecting anything in return. She was Selfless but also Stubborn too. She had a hard life, She was very beautiful as well- many men and even women liked her. But she turned them all down, her heart was on your Father"
Beautiful huh? Still no one is as pretty as Mother. I still don't understand why she would like my Father and somebody in wedlock especially. At least she isn't Selfish unlike him. He thought bitterly
"I see. Do you know why she liked my Father even though he was married?" Osmond asked
Valka blinked back in surprise, before regaining her composure. "I'm not sure. But I do remember her gushing about how brave he was and how she thought he was cute. Perhaps it was something in his personality. Eivor doesn't go for looks, she goes for personality. Something in his personality must have attracted her"
So she liked Father because he was brave and cute. Maybe there is more to Father than meets the eye. There must be else Mother wouldn't have liked him as well.
"I understand. What about Father did you ever know him like you knew Eivor?"
Valka shook her head. "No I'm afraid not. Everything I heard about him was from Eivor. She never spoke ill of him. I met your Mother once when she was sick and needed a potion from me. She was pregnant with you then"
That makes sense. Why Mother suggested that I see Valka . But how do they all know each other? Mother, Father, Valka and Eivor how did they all meet?
Speaking his thoughts aloud, he asked his next question.
"How did Father meet Eivor? I know how Mother and Father met but Mother never spoke about Eivor to me. It hurts her to talk about her"
He had tried to ask Valdis more about Eivor upon reading the diary, but she remained tight lipped, it was only when she shouted at him to stop asking that he did.
Of course she doesn't want to talk about Eivor. Father hurt her because of her.
Once again he felt that bitter surge of anger, and reminded himself to calm down once again because getting angry wouldn't get him anywhere.
Valka smiled wistfully "One night, a man called Rued and his clan attacked Ravensthorpe. Eivor was advised to head to East Anglia to talk to the new King about it, Which at the time was your Father. That is how they met"
Rued. Mother's other abusive ex. Rued also invaded here and tried to destroy and hurt Eivor as well. Leading all of them to meet.
Curiosity getting to him, Osmond asked yet another question to Valka.
"Did Mother get along with Eivor Well?"
I want to know if she always hated her since the beginning or if it was only after what Father did or Was she Jealous since the beginning?
"Yes. Eivor liked Valdis and Valdis liked her as well, in friendly terms of course. Your Mother never had a crush on Eivor. Eivor however wasn't jealous, but she was a little hurt when she saw how much your Father cared and liked your Mother"
So he really did like Mother even if he did cheat on her. No wonder she likes him.
Valka thought back to the day Eivor came back from the wedding. She remembered Eivor's sad and hurt look when she told him the way Oswald had looked at Valdis during the Wedding. Valka could never forget that look.
Even on the day she last saw her right before the fateful battle, that sad look never left Eivor. Especially the day she got the letter saying that Valdis was with Child. Eivor had looked solemn and depressed all day, refusing to talk to anyone.
"Here you go, I must warn you, The Visions will be quite strong. It will feel like you are almost there. Whenever you want to leave all you have to do is wake up. You know what happened to your Father don't you. Seeing it is a whole different level compared to Reading it" Valka said sternly passing the weird potion to Osmond
Osmond took the weird looking Liquid from Valka and nodded.
"I do." Osmond thought back to what he read in the diary, What Oswald had described.
Pushing back his nerves, he swallowed the liquid wincing before his vision started to blur out.
The last thing he heard was Valka's voice "Good Luck Osmond, May the Gods guide and watch over you"
Osmond felt himself floating through this long white cloudy tunnel, before he woke up in what looked like a battlefield.
Where am I? He thought shakily, rubbing his head. He stared at his surroundings around him, scrutinising.
He didn't think long as a flaming arrow hit the house in front of him as people screamed .
Osmond stared at his surroundings in horror. As more flaming arrows came.
Fuck! Don't just stand there, Run!
He ran away from the fires as more people continued to scream, he watched as citizens stumbled out, screaming and crying in pain as they desperately tried to get rid of the flames on their clothes to no avail
In front of him, people were fighting, men clad in armour fighting each other as loud clashes of steel were heard. He watched as a man screamed having just had his guts stabbed, before a sickening crunch silenced him once and for all as he knocked out on the head with someone's shield.
Osmond fought through the urge to puke and cry. Never in his life had he seen such horrible things as this. He had heard about it from Valdis, but never with his own eyes.
Blood flew on his face as he ran past them, from Various men getting stabbed all around him.
Finally he came to a clearing. He saw a man that looked like him with a Female Viking Warrior fending off some Saxon men.
Is that Father? And that Woman... It must be Eivor. That's it. I remember him writing about this bit in his diary. This is the bit they fought together before she died.
"Father! Father!" Osmond called out to Oswald, but Oswald couldn't hear him.
Osmond tried again. "Father, Father can you hear me?" he shouted this time, louder
Still, Oswald didn't turn back, too focused on stabbing a Saxon man the same with Eivor.
Desperate, Osmond ducked and barged his way through the fighting men, reaching Oswald.
He tapped his Father on the shoulder. "Father it's me, Osmond. It's your son, I'm here to see you"
Oswald Scowled "Who the hell are you? Why are you here?"
Osmond stumbled taken aback. "Father. You know who I am. It's me I've just grown up"
Oswald gritted "Go to hell."
Osmond gasped "Father Please. I'm Sorry, Ok? I understand your pain now. Father!"
Eivor frowned coming over to Oswald. "Who was that? Is he bothering you? Do you want me to Kill him?"
Oswald shook his head back to her. "Leave it Eivor. Just some weird freak who claims he knows me. He's just a kid. We got more important things to focus on"
Eivor looked at Osmond dubiously before facing Oswald once more.
"Alright. If you say so. Come on let's find everyone else"
Osmond felt the scene shifting, he found himself in a different area of the Battlefield, it was now empty and he could see that the Saxons were winning and that the Vikings were losing.
"Fall Back Fall Back!" He watched as he saw Eivor order the other Vikingrs.
Osmond glanced, watching the men retreat, before a scream broke his attention.
He whipped his head back forward as he heard his Father scream.
"Eivor no!" he heard Oswald's pained cry
Osmond's eyes widened when he saw Eivor get impaled by a Saxon Guard while they laughed. His heart broke when he saw his Father's pained expression.
Suddenly a flying axe broke his attention as the guard died and a female warrior with black hair spoke to Oswald "Go! Get Eivor to Safety. I'll hold them off!"
Osmond watched frozen in shock as his Father ran past him Cradling Eivor, unable to move.
"Stay with me Eivor, Stay with me"
For a second their eyes met, and Osmond could swear he saw the hurt and grief coming from his Father as he carried Eivor. The pain in his eyes.
Then time resumed. Osmond followed his Father further on to a quiet spot away from the chaos.
Hanging back from a distance he watched Oswald drop Eivor by the tree.
They seemed to be talking and having a disagreement. Osmond watched as his Father broke down crying. He looked at Eivor who was injured, bleeding and limp, giving up on life.
He walked closer, stopping behind them, listening to their conversation closely.
"I want you to Kill me. Just One Stab is needed. Then I can finally be free from this pain once and for all" Eivor was heard saying
Osmond watched as his Father shook his head. "No. I can't. I need you here with me Eivor, Whether it's as friends or something more. Please don't make me do this"
"Think about it as doing me a favour. If your horse was in pain, you would do the same wouldn't you? Why am I any different just because I'm a human?"
"Yes... I would. But you're not just any animal to me, Eivor your a friend to me and much more than that. I can't just kill you like that"
"You can. You're the Strongest man I know. You fight for honour and Justice. You have far more to live for. What do I have? I have a clan that ignores me half the time and a brother who won't even speak to me anymore. You have a family, a future. You don't need me"
"Don't say that. I love you Eivor as friend and perhaps more"
Osmond watched as Eivor broke down and cried screaming hysterically towards Oswald.
"If you love me then you would honour my last wish which is to just die, I want to die peacefully, I don't want to be in pain anymore"
Oswald broke down crying, as he looked at the sky and back at Eivor who was bleeding and limp in front of him.
"Please God, Let there be a different way out of this" he begged, hands clasped in prayer
Before turning back to Eivor with determination. "Fine. I'll do it. I hate this but I also hate seeing you in pain"
"Good" Eivor smiled
"This is going to hurt, are you ready?"
"I'm Ready" Eivor closed her eyes, ready to embrace her Fate.
Osmond gasped, even though he had read about it in the diary, he still could not believe he was seeing this with his own eyes, his Father Kissing Eivor.
What the Hell? Ew.
The moment was cut short as he heard the sound of a blade cutting open human flesh, and the sickening smell of blood as it hit the air.
Osmond's heart stopped beating in his chest as he froze in horror once more.
"I'm Sorry, I love you"
He just stabbed her. My Father Killed a Woman in Cold Blood.
With a pained gasp and groan, Eivor collapsed on the ground.
Osmond could not prepare himself for the ear piercing scream that would come next. He watched as Oswald dropped the bloodied knife on the grass.
Then he let out a deafening scream of pain. Osmond watched as Oswald continued screaming until several burly men ran to him, grabbing and dragging him.
"No. Eivor. EIVOR!" he cried as they dragged him away
"Shhhh. We need to go now. Before they get to you" One of the men attempted to soothe Oswald to no avail
"I don't care! I don't care. I would rather die! She's gone and it's all my fault!" He screamed hoarsely, tears rolling down his cheeks
"Father! Father!" Osmond called running after them, but it was too late. Oswald was out of reach and gone.
Osmond woke up with a gasp and a raised heartbeat, hyperventilating.
He got up panickedly as a worried Valka approached him.
"Osmond is everything alright?" she asked him
Osmond got up, clutching his hand to his mouth. He could feel bile coming up his throat.
He just about managed to close the door to Valka's hut, emptying his gut as he retched outside, sick going everywhere.
Wiping his mouth with his sleeve, he walked towards the dock and found a quieter spot. Sitting down, he tried to collect his thoughts, heart still hammering.
And then he cried. He let it all out, the whole damn waterfall. He cried like he never had before.
I'm so sorry Father. I called you a coward, when you went through hell and back. I don't know how lucky I am not to have seen that. For me it was just a Vision. But for you it was real. You're not a sissy at all. Eivor was right, and so was Mother. You're not a coward. You're a hero. Going through all of that.
It takes courage and bravery to fight. And to Kill a Loved one too, You're not selfish, you're far from it. I'm sorry I never realised it until now. I understand why you left us, why you hurt Mother now. It wasn't your fault. You were just hurting. I forgive you Father, I really do. I won't ever be mad at you again.
Osmond got up after staring at the stream. Having experienced and witnessed his Father's pain, he now understood more. Valdis would be pleased that her son finally had a change of heart and turned around.
After all, Oswald wasn't a coward. He was the Strongest Man. It takes bravery and courage to do what he did.
Having finally understood what Valdis wanted him to understand, Osmond headed home having a whole new perspective on his Father.
Author's Note: That's it that's the end of the fic. Hope you enjoyed! Thanks to Valka's intervention, Osmond at long last understands how strong his Father really is. It takes courage and bravery to go through what he did.
And Sorry if I repeated lines from "Kingdom's End" especially with the Oswald, Eivor battle scenes that part was meant to be a flashback through Valka's vision that's why it's repeated (Osmond is watching what happened through his Father's eyes, animus and third person style). Also the white cloud while travelling thing was meant to be a homage to the "Asgard" Loading screen in the game. When Eivor drinks the Asgard potion, she travels through the white cloud tunnel. Those who played the game should know that.
