"Time." Began a semi-robotic semi expressive male voice with the subtle sounds of shifting gears.
"One of the only true things shared by all inhabitants and all things of the multiverse equally." Like a night sky filled to the brim with stars, flashes of light could be seen from all corners of the multiverse, indicating all of which inhabited it.
"A resource scarce and precious, more easily lost than gained." A metallic grey and red hourglass, with scarce grains of sand at the top trickling down slowly and deliberately could be seen. At the top, the grains of sand are scarce, trickling down slowly and deliberately. The grains descend easily, slipping through the narrow bottleneck and disappearing into the bottom chamber.
"A thread of the very rope that tethers not just our lives, but our destinies." Almost like strings on puppets, all manner of sentient life, whether it be human or alien, can be seen with a rope attached to its back.
"Our fates." A warm, luminescent glow can be seen illuminating from the thread of the rope.
"Say one where to have the ability to craft this thread however they saw fit, how much they deemed necessary, the possibilities would truly be limitless." A new phenomenon would occur where the threads once strung to the back of each species would detach and instead attach to each other, creating something else entirely.
"There would not exist a point in time you could not bend to your will. A past you wish changed, a present you desired stable, a future you believed certain." The metallic grey and red hourglass would appear once more, but through multiple points in time, shifting upside down simultaneously to signify it's passage through the past, present and future.
"For those gifted as I am, the possibilities transcend imagination. I can alter not only my own timeline but countless others, each an intricate part of the multiverse's grand tapestry." On a blank canvas would be smeared the paint of the multiverse, it's all encompassing self represented in all its glory.
"The flow of the infinite time-stream of the multiverse all within my fingertips." A set of metallic hands could be seen stained with the paint of the multiverse."
"Some might choose servitude, using this gift for the greater good." A green and black hourglass would shine brightly to represent good.
"But their feeble wills, their narrow visions, their simple minds precludes them from ever wielding such power." Suddenly,a vertical crack would form in the middle of the hourglass, right before it would split into two.
"Afterall,it is mine and mine alone." Observing it's remains were cold and lifeless red eyes.
"Why shouldn't I use it however I see fit?" The metallic hands reemerge, cradling a radiant, pulsating red globe delicately, but with a sense of authority in it's touch.
"Why shouldn't I use it to mold the multiverse to my vision." The multiverse could be seen reflecting off the red eyes.
"To my image." And within that view of the multiverse within the red eyes, a new entity would take shape, one though shrouded in darkness, could be discerned as robotic in appearance.
"But alas, there are many who do not share my vision, and many more who would stop at nothing to see my downfall." A golden pocket watch would open, revealing an active blue portal inside it swirling in place.
"Amongst them, one in particular has proven to be a pest far more troublesome than I could have possibly anticipated. A child named Ben Tennyson wields a weapon capable of shifting the very balance of the universe itself, yet he squanders its potential by dedicating himself to aiding the weak." Strapped on the left arm, specifically around the wrist, was a digital wristwatch with a green, white and black color scheme with an hourglass symbol of primarily green and black on the faceplate. This is the Omnitrix.
"How noble." Thinly veiled sarcasm and even poorly concealed contempt could be heard from the voice.
"But little does the boy know that such naive, idealistic fallacies will bring him nothing but ruin, and from the moment we crossed paths and he sought to put my plans to ruin shall prove to be a grave mistake." Standing with a fully toothed, warm smile in all his shaggy brown haired, green eyed, slim build and caucasian skinned glory was Ben Tennyson, wielder of the Omnitrix.
"The last he will ever make." Ben's body would suddenly lose all color, before crumbling like sand as he had been reduced to dust.
"I am Maltruant." With the shadows no longer concealing his presence, the rogue Chronosapien could be fully seen.
"And I will be the architect of a new age across the multiverse."

DEFENDERS OF REALITY: FATE'S LAST STAND
Special thanks to MiniTennyson and Rowlets and Oshawotts for their assistance in helping this story come to life.
"It has been an honor to fight at your side"
"Well...we had a good run dear friend."
These two parting words were uttered by two individuals who had become inseparable to him in what felt like a very short time.
The first from his Revonnahgandher partner and best friend, Rook Blonko
The second from his Omnitrix Slimebiote and invaluable ally, Skurd.
Parting words which he had accepted would be the last he would ever hear.
As he fell continuously in the absolute white void of the universe that never was, and stared helplessly at the oncoming large red explosion that was both the size of and signified the universe that would come to be, Ben Tennyson, panicked in the face of what seemed to be imminent death, saw his entire life flash before his eyes.
It began with his birth, a moment of pure innocence. He took his first steps, spoke his first words, celebrated his first birthday, and cherished the warmth of family gatherings. Those early years paved the way for the hero he would become.
At the age of ten, one night, on a fateful summer vacation with his Grandpa Max and cousin Gwen, his world changed forever when he stumbled upon the Omnitrix. It was a night of discovery, fear, and excitement. His first transformation, Heatblast, would signal his initiation into heroism, marking a turning point.
From his battle with Vilgax drones,to his first encounter with nemesis Dr Animo,he learned that being a hero came with its lessons and challenges. His first major mistake, prioritizing the rewards and praise from his heroics over the satisfaction in doing good for the sake of it served as a sobering reminder of the weight of responsibility of a hero.
Over time, enemies became allies such as Tetrax, and friends sometimes turned foes through the likes of Kevin Levin. Each encounter left its mark, teaching him the complexities of heroism.
He stood tall, saving not only his world from grave threats like Vilgax and Z'Skayr, but also the universe from the peril that would be brought by the self destruction of the Omnitrix.
By facing these seemingly insurmountable odds with courage and determination, and having his family by his side to support him, Ben would grow to become a truly unstoppable force for good.
In a moment begotten from the tragedy of losing his favorite transformation, Feedback, Ben would remove the Omnitrix at age 11, but he couldn't stay away from the call of heroism for long, as 4 years later, he put it back on, and with it recalibrated signalled the beginning of new adventures, alongside fresh enemies and loyal allies.
In a team composed of himself, a more powerful Gwen and a reformed Kevin, which would grow to accompany Plumbers Helpers Alan, Pierce, Helen, Manny, childhood friend Cooper, girlfriend at the time Julie, and adversary Darkstar, the Highbreed would be thwarted and the universe saved once again.
Even when a relentless Vilgax would return, far stronger than before, and later on again with an ally in evil doppelganger Albedo, he would be defeated, each time a point of growth for Ben, but none more significant than the defeat of him and Albedo which saw him acquire the Ultimatrix, an improvement of the Omnitrix, along the way.
The continuous battle against Aggregor tested his resolve like none before, especially with the conclusion seeing Kevin go mad with power once more, becoming an even greater threat in Ultimate Kevin. Defeated, and in an act of mercy, spared, Kevin would remain an ally ever since. The sacrifice he made for the Ultimates for the sake of their freedom showcased his selflessness at its best. And when the Dagon and his followers threatened, Ben rose to the challenge, proving his mettle once more.
After his departure with Kevin and Gwen came the day he met Rook, a partnership that would become unbreakable. Together, they defeated Huntsman Khyber, thwarted the cunning Psychobos, and vanquished the psychotic Galvanic Mechamorph, Malware amongst many other threats to the universe. But a time war threatened the multiverse itself, forcing Ben to face and fight alongside versions of himself, revealing the true extent of his heroism in ways which it had never been seen before.
All of these just small snippets of the larger than reality but fulfilling life Ben Tennyson had led up to this point.
A life that was about to be snuffed out to give way for something far more malicious to be born.
As Ben's life experiences flashed before him, he couldn't help but feel the crushing weight of the impending catastrophe. All those irreplaceable moments, all those arduous battles, all those countless lives saved, now hung in the balance, about to be snuffed out by an oncoming explosion of unimaginable power.
A sense of helplessness washed over him, causing his breath to become ragged, his skin and clothes to become drenched in sweat and his blood to run cold. The universe he and his allies had devoted their lives to protecting was on the brink of inevitable destruction, and he felt powerless to stop it. His every heroic deed, his every sacrifice, threatened to become meaningless.
In that dire moment, when despair seemed to be his only companion, cold and cruel in its company, fate intervened once again. Ben's Omnitrix arm, the symbol of his heroism and his indomitable spirit, surged with unprecedented energy—a vibrant mix of green, red, and blue.
It was a beacon of hope in the darkest hour. A light that carried the weight of all the hopes and dreams of the inhabitants of a universe about to be put out. A portal of those three colors emerged from the arm, growing with a fierce intensity until it enveloped Ben entirely, shielding him from the impending catastrophe. With a resounding, ear splitting boom that signified the expansion of the explosion that was the Annihalrag, the universe that existed as it was at that moment was soon to no longer be, a Rook gripped by absolute despair, a curious Contemelia, and an overjoyed Maltruant watching the last embers of the universe about to shine for the last time.
A damnation in essence that Ben had just been miraculously saved from.
He had been granted a second chance—a chance to live another day.
And though were he to find out the fate of his universe at this moment he may not readily believe it, Ben had indeed been also granted a chance to live to fight another day.
To fight for what may have been gone, was far from forgotten.
Chapter 1
Maltruant's Gambit: Multiverse in Peril!
His eyes were sealed shut, letting not even a light inside.
His body was completely immobile, limbo like even, seemingly cocooned in the unknown, but warm to showcase that he was still alive and breathing.
His fatigue was evident and dominant, tugging at his every muscle and seeing to it that he got a much needed rest after his previous circumstances.
But almost as if compelled by either nature itself,or the will of an entity whose identity would remain unknown, Ben would find himself beginning to stir, unable to remain asleep.
A series of groans would escape his lips involuntary body movements, His limbs, once numb and unresponsive, gradually regained sensation. It was a painstaking process, like rekindling embers in a long-dormant fire. Each movement was accompanied by a chorus of protests from his body, but his efforts would win out as his fluttering eyes indicated that Ben had awakened.
His vision blurred as his eyes remained partially open, but able to take in his surroundings all the same, albeit in glimpses. The night sky hung above him, a shroud of darkness pierced by the distant, twinkling stars.
Crickets chirped in unison, frogs added their croaks to the chorus, and unseen creatures of the night rustled in the underbrush. The wilderness came alive with its nocturnal denizens, heightening his senses.
With an instinctual urge, Ben's eyes widened, and he found himself lying on the ground. His hands instinctively reached out, grasping at the sandy soil beneath him, mingled with the cool touch of grass and leaves.
The trees, large and looming, expanded from all corners of his surroundings, indicating that he was in a forest.
And with that observation, came a realization which hit him like a cosmic hammer. He wasn't where he had been moments ago. Wherever this was, it was unmistakably Earth, but whether it was his Earth and his timeline had yet to be seen.
Instinctively, Ben would reach out to grip the Omnitrix, his ever-present companion, and upon realizing that it was still clung to his wrist through brushing his fingers on the faceplate, despite it earlier creating a portal, and that Skurd, albeit unconscious, was still attached to it, filled Ben with a sense of relief that was expressed through him letting out a sigh. The comforting green glow it emanated, though serving as a beacon of familiarity, wasn't the only thing that illuminated the dark forest. Not even barely to be precise.
Ben's gaze flickered toward the center of his makeshift resting place, where a campfire crackled and danced with life. It was an unexpected sight, and it filled him with a mix of curiosity and caution.
With a sense of urgency, Ben cautiously pushed himself into a sitting position. He knew he needed answers, and perhaps the source of the campfire held them.
But before he could even begin to form speculations on what that may be, he knew his most pending question needed an immediate answer.
"Where am I?"
"Or more accurately…where are we?" Upon looking at Skurd once more, Ben would frown slightly, displeased that he was still unconscious.
"Rise and shine, sleepyhead." Ben nudged Skurd, causing him to stir and groan as he began to come to, regaining his bearings.
"I would like to take my grasshopper smoothie to go, thank you…" Said Skurd drowsily, causing Ben to roll his eyes unamused.
"Knock it off, Skurd. Now's not the time." Ben flicked the Slimebiot with his right index finger lightly, causing his head to bob and weave like a rattlesnake for a while until he eventually came to a disoriented stop.
"Ughhh…..my apologies dear boy. It seems I was more out of it than I thought." Apologized Skurd sincerely as he placed his left tendril on his forehead, which had the Omnitrix insignia on it.
"It's fine, but right now I need your help on this." Said Ben, his voice filled with urgency, causing Skurd to look at him curiously.
"Is that tyrant Maltruant after us? And on the topic, where is your partner?" Asked Skurd, one of the many questions he needed answered.
"I don't think so, and I don't know know." Answered Ben solemnly.
"Quite frankly, that's what I need your help with, trying to figure out exactly where we are." Skurd would begin to stroke his lower body almost as if it was a chin, a contemplative gesture.
"Hmm…. considering that we are both not erased from existence, and the terrain around us, I don't believe it would be far-fetched to muse that we are on Earth once more." Hypothesized Skurd.
"I think so too, but whether we're back on our Earth and our timeline, I can't say." Agreed Ben as he rose to his feet.
"Considering our prior engagements, we would be best served to proceed as if it's not our Earth until proven otherwise." Advised Skurd.
"Astute deductions from both of you." Praised a new voice from behind the duo. One that was familiar to both of them, As he turned to look back, Ben and Skurd would see a blue portal around Ben's height open, and stepping out of it was an ally best suited to ease their concerns in their time of uncertainty.
Time being the relative word here.
"Professor Paradox." Said Ben with a tone of anticipation, for he knew that in times of uncertainty, the time-walker held the key to understanding.
"Hello again Ben, and Skurd." Said Paradox softly with a warm smile.
"Greetings, Professor. We meet once again under the most unusual of circumstances." Said Skurd formally with a hint of amusement at the novelty of their situation.
"Indeed, but as a connoisseur of the bizarre, I've grown accustomed to such occurrences," Paradox remarked matter-of-factly, though his smile waned, signaling a hint of concern beneath.
"But even I must attest that this is an outcome I wish avoided." Paradox's smile fell, piquing Ben and Skurd's curiosity and concern.
"As you both suspected, this is indeed Earth, but neither yours nor your timeline. It is another Earth altogether, or rather, for clarity's sake…. another universe." Both Ben and Skurd's eyes would widen briefly in shock over this revelation, before they would regain their composure just as fast.
"And I'm guessing you're the one who brought us here." Speculated Ben.
"I am, but it wasn't an arbitrary decision." Paradox gestured toward the Omnitrix.
"As you were about to be erased by the full extent of the blast from the Annihalrag, the Omnitrix's failsafe activated in a bid to save your life Ben. Normally, it would transform you into an alien best suited to deal with whatever the incoming threat was, but due to its proximity to the blast, a one in a million event occurred, as the Omnitrix malfunctioned, seeking instead to transport you to Galvan Prime for safety. Had that happened, your lives would be lost." He paused for effect, allowing the weight of his words to sink in.
"So I intervened, and instead brought you here." Stunned silence. That was the expression that best conveyed the disposition of both Ben and Skurd, as they found themselves unable to utter even a single sound in response for what felt like hours to them, but in reality, was a lot less.
"That ….is quite a lot to take in." Skurd would manage to say begrudgingly, his disbelief evident.
"Wait a second…you said if you didn't bring us here, we'd be goners by now." Ben interjected, a blend of eagerness and panic in his voice.
"Does that mean…." A solemn glare from Paradox would meet Ben's shaky gaze, the air around the three fermenting in anticipation over what was sure to be a most unpleasant revelation.
"I am truly sorry, Benjamin." Paradox said somberly, and the weight of his words hung in the air like a funeral dirge.
"Our universe…. is no more."
There it was. The unmistakable, unkind reality that he knew deep in his heart even before Paradox's arrival had come to pass, but didn't wish to accept.
Now presented to him as an inevitably that he could no longer avoid.
He….had failed.
Perhaps even worse than when the Annihalrag was set off by the Vreedle Brothers months ago in his universe.
As back then,he was at least present to see his universe unravel before his very eyes, and with the abilities of his most powerful transformation, the Celestialsapien, Alien X, he could restore his universe to what it once was before all would be lost.
But now?
Not only was he unable to even avert the crisis of the Annihalrag exploding for a second time, or prevent the ensuing cataclysm that would see the very universe as he knew it erased from existence.
He wasn't even able to act when standing face to face with the impending doom that would befall his universe. His inaction haunted him.
And if not for the Omnitrix's failsafe or Professor Paradox's intervention, he could very well have perished alongside his universe, his existence wiped clean from the vast canvas of the multiverse.
The way he saw it, with his emotional state in absolute tatters, that would have been a mercy. Because at least then, he could have died alongside the very universe he had pledged his life to safeguard.
But now, he remained, a survivor in a world devoid of billions of lives he was duty-bound to protect. Leaving him seemingly without a purpose in the face of such loss.
There could be no greater cruelty.
As the weight of these realizations bore down on him, Ben's world crumbled. His legs gave way, and he fell to his knees, unable to hold himself upright. His pupils darted frenetically, unable to focus on anything. His breath came in ragged gasps, each inhale and exhale marked by a desperate struggle for air. His body temperature soared as he broke into a profuse sweat, drenching his clothes.
His composure was shattered, fragments of his once-confident persona scattered to the cosmic winds. Tremors coursed through his body uncontrollably, and he clutched at his chest, feeling his heart race erratically.
It was happening. A panic attack, an unrelenting storm of anxiety and despair, each wave crashing over him with relentless force. He was trapped within himself, drowning in a maelstrom of emotions too vast to comprehend.
His mind raced, images of his universe's demise flashing before his eyes. Faces of friends, family, and countless beings he had sworn to protect haunted his thoughts. Their voices, their laughter, their hopes and dreams—all silenced by the inexorable tide of the Annihalrag's explosion.
Ben's panic attack was a cacophony of guilt, regret, and sorrow. He clung to the ground, his knuckles white from gripping the earth as if it could anchor him to reality. His world had imploded, and he was adrift in the wreckage of his own failure.
His will had been vanquished, and its place stood unbridled grief that would begin to give way through his eyes becoming watery and his voice cracking.
And just as he was about to give in to that grief.
"You must calm yourself dear boy…" Like an angel on his shoulder, Skurd spoke softly to his distraught comrade. It didn't pull him out of his panic-induced trance entirely, but it was a flicker of light in the suffocating darkness that threatened to consume him.
"I cannot begin to fathom the pain that has settled in your heart, the weight of this unprecedented despair. You have my deepest condolences and you can lean on my unwavering support during this time of distress. But I sense that the time to grieve must be temporarily put on hold." Said Skurd in a tone riddled with sincerity, sadness but also steadfastness.
"Regrettably, Skurd is right. As our troubles are only just beginning." Said Paradox in agreement.
"The fate that has befallen our universe has seen to it that in its place now exists a universe of Maltruant's own design. A universe in Maltruant's image, where every living creature across the cosmos and beyond worships him like a god and none exist who may oppose him. If we do not act now, the very same fate will befall this universe as well." Gripped by his heroic instincts, Ben would look up to Paradox, the prospect of what he had just been told shaking him to his core,as his eyes held absolute horror in them.
A universe where the will of all sentient life existed only to deify Maltruant.
And where none existed who would dare oppose.
That the fate that befall his universe, and now, another would fall under it as well if Maltruant was not stopped.
He may not have been in any state to form an immediate resolve on what to do upon hearing this information, but his consciousness hadn't been drowned, and as such, his heroic spirit, though weakened, wouldn't stand for Maltruant's evil to reign supreme once more.
That heroic spirit only needed to be fanned the flames that could strengthen it's resolve, and grant it some level of assurance that it may stand tall once more.
And from the glance into Ben's eyes that opened a window into his very soul, Paradox knew exactly what would give that spirit what it desired.
"Maltruant possesses with him another Annihalrag which he intends to use to detonate in this universe in order to shape it to his design. If we can defeat Maltruant, and seize the Annihalrag from him, we can return back to the point when our universe was created and detonate the Annihalrag, undoing Maltruant's changes, and restoring our universe to what it once that." That was exactly what Ben needed to hear.
A lifeline.
One that created a second chance to save his universe as a result of it's existence. A second chance that justified his survival.
And now that the lifeline existed, the conditions for Ben's heroic spirit to be rekindled had been met.
If it were most in Ben's shoes, the information they had just been subjected to and the emotional turmoil it caused would be too great for them to even begin to fully steel their resolve even with the possibility of hope existing.
But Ben, as he had proven countless times prior, was not most people.
"How do we stop Maltruant?" Asked Ben as he rose to his feet, his complete shift in demeanor surprised both Paradox and Skurd.
But despite his surprise, Paradox would not only regain his bearings, but find himself consumed by an immense feeling of pride. Pride in Ben's unwavering bravery in the face of crushing adversity.
Bravery that Paradox fully intended not to go to waste, as he was willing to do everything in his power to ensure that the universe's greatest hero would triumph once more.
Skurd, too, shared this sentiment. He had witnessed Ben's emotional rollercoaster, from near tears moments prior to seeing him rise with determination to face the challenge ahead. The Slimebiot felt a deep, unyielding urge within him to do everything within his power to aid Ben in any way needed and to stand by his side in the upcoming battle against the oncoming adversity.
"To be able to stop Maltruant, you must first understand the factors within this new universe that he seeks to manipulate to his benefit." Began Paradox stoically.
"To start things off, this universe has many similarities to our own. Similar technological advancements, similar landmarks in history, similar evolution of human society. But within those similarities also exists vast differences that have helped to mold the world that exists today. Differences that make this universe truly stand out in the endless void that is the multiverse." Ben would not utter a word,as he listened attentively to Paradox's spiel.
"One such difference is the very foundation for which the key factor that Maltruant seeks to manipulate exists, and that we must seek to use to our advantage to thwart him. That being the very fabric of fate and legends wielding unfathomable power." Ben and Skurd's eyes would significantly widen in awe upon hearing those words, then narrow in anticipation over what Paradox was going to say next.
"Humanity's collective beliefs, myths, and legends have taken on a life of their own. King Arthur, Hercules, Robin Hood, Sasaki Kojiro, Miyamoto Musashi, Medusa, Medea. These are just some of the legendary figures from history and myths who have become real, their existence that of beings called 'Servants'." Ben was so dumbfounded by these string of revelations that he almost didn't immediately form a question in his mind upon hearing Paradox's last statement.
"Servants?" Asked Ben confusedly.
"Yes, Servants. They draw strength from their epic tales of legend. Think of King Arthur and his mighty sword Excalibur, Hercules and his godlike strength and immense courage, Robin Hood and his unmatched archery skills. The very things that immortalized them in history is what goes hand in hand as the source of their power." Skurd found himself greatly intrigued by this new development,as his knowledge on human history was limited, and these unique circumstances piqued his interest in learning more about it than he ever wanted to previously.
"Would you say the more popular the legend, the more powerful the servant is likely to be?" Asked Skurd.
"Excellent question, Skurd." Praised Paradox with a smile.
"Though I will address it later so that we do not get ahead of ourselves, it is not the sole determining factor of a servant's strength." Skurd seemed somewhat content, as though it may not have been the exact answer he desired,it would suffice to stave off his curiosity for the moment.
"How about why they're called Servants? Can you explain that?" Asked Ben.
"Most certainly. I was actually getting to that right now." Assured Paradox.
"As you may have already surmised, the existence of Servants, particularly in terms of the name, implies the existence of masters. You would be correct. Servants possess the name Servants due to the ones who summon them. They are called Masters." Ben nodded in response, indicating that he was following.
"Masters are individuals who form contracts with Servants, setting the foundation for a partnership geared towards a specific goal that can only be achieved by a Master's skill-set complemented by a Servant's unique abilities." Paradox would deliberately come to a halt, as he anticipated a question.
"What goal is that?" Asked Ben, proving Paradox's intuition to be correct.
"Achieving victory in the Holy Grail War." Said Paradox sternly.
"War?" Said Ben and Skurd in unison in a mixture of shock, awe and concern.
"Yes. One far unlike the ones we've dealt with in our universe." Paradox, continued to explain.
"Centuries ago, in the pursuit of an omnipotent artifact, the Einzberns, Makiris, and Tohsakas, collectively known as the Three First Families, worked together to summon said artifact; the Holy Grail. It has the power to grant any wish, but only one would be granted supplication. From mutual cooperation was born bloody war."
"The Holy Grail War." Said Ben in realization, causing Paradox to nod in approval.
"Over the centuries, the Holy Grail War has taken on different forms, varying in scale and purpose. Sometimes it was a secret battle waged in the shadows, while other times it became a public spectacle. Each occurrence left its mark on the fabric of this universe, shaping it in unique ways." Described Paradox.
"How frequent is every occurrence?" Asked Skurd.
"In this timeline, once every ten years. It is currently experiencing the fifth Grail War." Paradox's answer had just left the duo with a newly formed question. One which was quite obvious.
"This timeline?" Asked Ben for both of them.
"Affirmative." Paradox would open his clenched right hand,a metal gauntlet, which would activate the ChronoNavigator, causing a blue holographic projection to emerge from his palm.
"Very much like our own, there exists countless other timelines in this universe. Together, they form this reality's multiverse, which unlike ours that possesses a main timeline, can be represented on this tree." Paradox would tap his cane on the tree trunk for indication.
"Each branch represents a separate timeline, created by countless factors. Different choices, different decisions, different events create a new timeline, and with it, a new path for history to follow." Paradox would use his cane to point at the several branches on the vast tree for indication.
He would briefly pause so that the concept would sink in.
"In essence, there are countless alternate timelines, each with its own unique set of events and outcomes. They exist simultaneously, intertwined but separate, forming a vast and intricate multiverse."
Ben scratched his head, trying to grasp the concept "So, you're saying there could be countless versions of me and Skurd out there, each living different lives?"
"Precisely." Paradox confirmed.
"And here in this universe, these alternate timelines can sometimes interact, collide, or influence each other. It's a complex tapestry of possibilities, where choices echo across dimensions."
Skurd was deep in thought. "So, if we're in one of these alternate timelines, does that mean there are other versions of us here too?"
Paradox nodded. "It's highly likely. In a universe filled with such distinct variables like Servants, Masters, and the Holy Grail War, there could very well be other versions of you and Ben navigating their own unique challenges begotten from completely unique circumstances."
Ben furrowed his brow. "But if we're in an alternate timeline right now for instance, how does that affect our mission to stop Maltruant and save our universe?"
Paradox offered a reassuring smile. "While you may be in a different timeline, the threat posed by Maltruant and the fate of our universe transcend these boundaries. We'll find a way to set things right, no matter the timeline we're in."
Both Ben and Skurd would nod in compliance.
"Going back to what you said about there being no main timeline in this reality. Could you perhaps go more in depth on that?" Asked Skurd inquisitively.
"Certainly." Smiled Paradox.
"Frankly speaking,in this reality, there isn't a single 'main' timeline in the traditional sense that serves as a baseline for all others. Instead, you can think of each timeline as having its own unique significance, shaped by the choices made within it."
"Which is where the branches come in." Mused Ben, to which Paradox nodded in agreement.
He continued, "Some timelines may be more well-known or influential, often centered around prominent historical figures and events, but none is inherently more important than the others. They all coexist independently, with their own stories and outcomes."
Ben and Skurd nodded, starting to grasp the intricacies of this multiverse. From the existence of alternate timelines created from differing choices and events, to the possibility of alternate versions of themselves existing within those timelines, and now to that no single timeline held ultimate importance; these were indeed very daunting revelations, but quite fascinating nonetheless.
"So," Ben asked, "how do we know which timeline we're in, and does it matter for our mission?"
Paradox chuckled, "Ah, that's the beauty of it. The specifics of which timeline you're in might not be immediately clear, and it doesn't necessarily matter for your mission. What's important is that you're here to stop Maltruant, who threatens not just our own universe but the very fabric of this corner of the multiverse and beyond." With a closing of his palm, the holographic projection would disperse.
He added with a knowing grin, "Besides, figuring out the intricacies of which this universe's timelines operate can be quite the adventure in itself, don't you think?"
Ben and Skurd exchanged a glance, realizing that their journey through this mysterious universe held far more complexity than they could have imagined.
"Perhaps." Said Ben with a gleam of adventure in his eyes is a thinly concealed smile, Paradox's proposition certainly captivating him.
"How well they play out is yet to be seen, but that is a story for another time." Stated Skurd, wishing to turn the subject of conversation to something far more easier to readily grasp.
"In all of these timelines within this reality's multiverse which might I add we should perhaps consider employing a name for simplicity's sake." Began Skurd on a small tangent.
"I assume there are numerous constants within all of them including this one. One in particular that you are yet to fully touch on." Ben would glance at his Slimebiot companion with a raised eyebrow, unsure of what he was insinuating. But Paradox would sport a knowing smile in response and also let out a chuckle.
"My apologies. Now would be indeed a time best suited to return to our previous and most pending point of discussion, as it will set the groundwork for which your roles in the fifth Grail War will be revealed." Began Paradox.
"One of the key determinants of a Servant's power comes from the very class from which they originate from. To streamline their abilities, servants are typically divided into seven distinct classes, each embodying a particular archetype. These classes are Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin and Berserker." Once again, Paradox would rely on his holographic projection, this time using it to display symbols representing each class.
"Each class has its own unique strengths, weaknesses, and skills derived from the legends and myths of the champions they represent." A red hieroglyphic-like symbol with a unique design, one of many would appear.
"Saber-class Servants are often known for their exceptional swordsmanship and combat skills. Figures like King Arthur and Siegfried commonly fall into this category." For each class Paradox would touch on,a unique symbol would appear for clarification.
"Next, the Lancer class," he continued, "emphasizes agility and precision. Lancers are skilled in spear combat and are known for their speed. Legendary heroes like Cu Chulainn typically belong to this class."
Moving on to the Archer class, he explained, "Archers excel in long-range combat and are masters of projectiles. Heroes such as Robin Hood and Atalanta are famous Archer-class Servants."
"Rider-class Servants," he elaborated, "are known for their mastery of mounted combat. Figures like Alexander the Great and Medusa often manifest in this class."
"Caster-class Servants are adept at magic and spellcasting," Paradox said, transitioning to the next class. "Prominent magicians and wizards like Merlin and Medea typically fall under this category."
"Assassin-class Servants," he continued, "are experts in stealth and assassination techniques. Figures like Hassan of the Cursed Arm and Jack the Ripper usually belong to this class."
Finally, Paradox mentioned the Berserker class. "Berserkers are characterized by their sheer power and uncontrollable fury. Heroes like Hercules and Lancelot typically manifest as Berserker-class Servants."
He paused to let Ben and Skurd absorb this information. "The class system helps balance the Holy Grail War, as different classes counter each other's strengths and weaknesses. It also adds a layer of strategy, as Masters must determine how best to utilize their Servant's abilities to achieve victory."
"Woah…." Ben would say in awe after a brief but poignant moment of silence.
"Woah indeed, dear boy." Said Skurd in agreement. Both found themselves near speechless trying to unpackage this latest revelation, much to Paradox's amusement.
"Moving on, another determinant of a Servant's strength outside of obvious factors such as skills and experience is what is known as a Noble Phantasm." The unique terminology Paradox had used instantly piqued Ben and Skurd's collective curiosities.
"These legendary heroes possess a unique ultimate weapon or ability, known as a Noble Phantasm. These are not just any weapons; they are the very embodiment of the heroes' legends." With his ChronoNavigator still activated, Paradox would display holographic images of various heroic figures wielding their Noble Phantasms. Each image exuded an aura of power and significance.
"For example," he said, pointing to a holographic image of King Arthur holding the legendary sword Excalibur, "King Arthur's Noble Phantasm is Excalibur, the Sword of Promised Victory. It's not merely a sword; it's a divine weapon with the power to unleash a devastating beam of light, capable of vanquishing almost any foe."
Paradox then shifted the hologram to show an image of the great hero Hercules, who wielded a massive club. "Hercules possesses the Noble Phantasm known as 'God Hand.' It grants him not one, not two, but twelve lives, making him nearly invincible in battle."
He continued to display various Noble Phantasms, each more awe-inspiring than the last. "These Noble Phantasms are the pinnacle of a Servant's power and are often game-changers in the Holy Grail War. Masters and Servants alike strategize to unleash their full potential."
Ben and Skurd, who had watched Paradox's holographic presentations of these legendary weapons and abilities, found themselves completely awestruck.
"And although well-known figures like King Arthur or Hercules may generally have an advantage due to the familiarity of their legends, which in turn makes their Noble Phantasms that much more formidable, it would be ill advised to underestimate Servants who may be lesser-known historical or mythological figures, as they can still become formidable if the right conditions are met. One such being compatible Masters." Cautioned Paradox as he deactivated his device.
"I have observed a lot of emphasis on the concept of Masters on your end recently, and I do not believe it would be far-fetched for me to assume that it is deliberate." Stated Skurd suspiciously.
"You would be absolutely correct, Skurd. For what better way to brace young Benjamin for his newly coveted role as a Master?" Ben's eyes would widen in absolute shock upon hearing that revelation, a sentiment shared by Skurd.
"Me…a Master?" Said Ben with a mixture of disbelief and uncertainty.
"How is that even possible that the lad is already a Master? We haven't even been in this universe till dusk." Asked Skurd with a mixture of confusion and surprise.
"It was a simple matter really." Began Paradox in an assured tone.
"A facet of being a Master is to have been already chosen by the Holy Grail, which in itself possesses distinct criteria that is also intricate and mysterious, as it often involves a combination of factors. But the factors that can be made out, albeit not always consistent all the time, is seeking out Masters based on their desires and wishes, specifically deep-rooted ambitions or desires, as these wishes are closely tied to the Holy Grail's purpose of granting a wish to the victor of the war."
"With the nature of the circumstances that have led to your participation, there only existed one barrier preventing you from being selected as a Master naturally. A barrier I have dispelled." Paradox had stoked the flames of the duo's curiosity even more.
"Said barrier being?" Asked Ben, not following what Paradox was insinuating.
"Look at the back of your left hand, Benjamin." Gestured Paradox, to which Ben complied. Turning his left hand back made Ben's eyes instinctively fall on the Omnitrix and Skurd. But to his surprise, on the back of his left palm was something that wasn't there before.
A red hieroglyphic like symbol similar to the one's from the Servant Classes Paradox highlighted in his presentation, but with a vastly different symbol from the seven that were shown to him and Skurd.
What the-!" Shouted Ben, taken aback.
"What is this contraption, Professor?!" Shouted an equally startled Skurd, not noticing the symbol before at all.
"That gentlemen, is a Command Seal." Said Paradox calmly.
"They are magical marks or symbols that grant its bearer, a Master, control over their Servants, and a sign of a successful contract formed between both. However, as you are yet to summon a Servant, it is currently nothing more than an ordinary marking more akin to a tattoo than a symbol of magic." Ben would look at the seal with realization upon hearing Paradox's words.
"You mentioned magic. I take it you'd need some in order to summon a Servant?" Asked Ben.
"Affirmative. Masters themselves are often mages with a most peculiar affinity for the arcane arts. Utilizing their very own magic power is one of the distinct criterias for summoning and forming a contract with a Servant." Explained Paradox.
"A most interesting development indeed Professor. However, there is one problem. The lad doesn't possess an ounce of magic." Stated Skurd.
"Yep. I might be one quarter Anodite from my Grandma Verdona's side of the family, but I don't have the 'Spark' so… no magic for me." Said Ben with a shrug, almost as if it was common knowledge.
"You hail from an Anodite lineage, dear boy?" Said Skurd, rightfully surprised.
"Indeed. That would very much be the case…under normal circumstances." Said Paradox with a smirk, interrupting Skurd. Before he could return to his previous question, a new one had already formed.
"Are you implying…?" Ben's eyes would widen in shock as his line of thought now aligned with Skurd's.
"Very much so." Said Paradox assuredly.
"But how?!" Shouted Ben in disbelief.
"It took a different version of a future me, Ultimate Ben, 20 years just to pick up a few spells from Gwen." Once again, Skurd would find himself dumbfounded by this latest revelation of one of the many accounts of his partner's most unusual life.
"Some well-intentioned meddling on my part coupled with a most valuable constant in this universe has ensured that it is now possible for you to tap into the abilities that come from your Anodite heritage." Said Paradox casually.
"Said constant being?" Asked Skurd curiosity.
"The Mystical Eyes." Ben and Skurd shared a quick glance at each other, then looked back to Paradox, expecting him to explain this new concept. An explanation that he was more than ready to give, for as he began, his tone of voice accompanied with its usual wisdom was also laced with a touch of amusement
"Mystical Eyes are unique ocular abilities that defy conventional magical limitations. They can grant their wielder extraordinary powers, transcending the boundaries of what is considered possible within the realm of magic."
Ben listened intently, his curiosity piqued. Skurd, too, was eager to understand this new facet, specifically in relation to how it would make his partner more akin to a mage.
"Mystical Eyes are often closely tied to one's lineage, personal experiences, or inherent nature," Paradox continued. "In your case, Ben, they have been awakened within you in part due to my own acquisition of them to give to you and your suppressed natural affinity for mana."
Ben raised an eyebrow, intrigued but still uncertain. "So, what exactly do these Mystical Eyes do?"
Paradox smiled, appreciating their curiosity. "Your Mystical Eyes, Ben, grant you the ability to perceive, channel, and manipulate magical energies in a way that transcends the limits of a typical mage. They've awakened the latent magical potential within you, stemming from your Anodite heritage."
"So me being able to use them…" Ben trailed off deliberately, almost in disbelief
"Yes, indeed," Paradox confirmed. "Your lineage as a quarter Anodite provides a unique connection to mystical energies. The Mystical Eyes serve as a bridge between this universe's magical forces and your inherent Anodite traits. They've essentially unlocked your magical abilities, allowing you to perform feats of magic, even though you don't possess an Anodite's Spark."
Ben's eyes widened in realization, and a sense of wonder crept over him. "So, these Mystical Eyes are like a key that unlocked my magic?"
"In a way, yes," Paradox replied with a nod. "They've granted you the means to harness the magical potential within you, and in doing so, they've strengthened your own magical affinity, making you capable of participating in the Holy Grail War as a Master."
Skurd, who had been listening attentively, chimed in with a thoughtful expression. "It's quite fascinating how these 'Mystical Eyes' as you call it, can adapt to such unique circumstances and empower their user."
"Indeed," Paradox agreed. "The Mystical Eyes have a remarkable ability to adapt and enhance the user's inherent talents to suit the situation at hand. In your case, Ben, they've allowed you to step into the role of a Master and participate in this extraordinary event."
Ben couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude and excitement at these newfound abilities he'd been gifted. "So, with these Mystical Eyes, I can use magic now?! How much?!"
"Precisely," Paradox confirmed. "Though you will find out within a moment's notice your current capabilities, you now have the means to channel and manipulate magical energy, which will be crucial in the next step."
"Summoning a Servant and forming a contract with them." Mused Skurd, to which Paradox would nod in approval.
"So how do I do that?" Asked Ben eagerly.
"Before we commence with the Summoning Ritual, you must first understand the role your Servant plays in the Holy Grail War." Stated Paradox.
"You've already chosen one for me? Guess that's to be expected." Said Ben with a hint of amusement.
"My preparations are quite extensive I humbly concede, but it is of utmost importance that you are both fully equipped for the challenges ahead." Said Paradox in good spirits as he let out a small chuckle.
"We understand, Professor." Said Skurd in acknowledgement of Paradox's efforts,a sentiment Ben also shared by nodding.
"So what about my Servant?" Asked Ben with a hint of anticipation.
"Your Servant will be a Ruler Class Servant." Said Paradox, using his ChronoNavigator to create a holographic projection showing a symbol similar to the one on the back of Ben's hand.
"Ah." Said Ben softly in realization.
"As you would have already noticed, this class is completely different from the seven distinct classes I touched on earlier. That is by design,as it serves a unique role, presiding over the war and ensuring that its rules are followed fairly." Began Paradox
"Rules to a war...never thought I'd hear that." Commented Ben.
"Your skepticism is most understandable, but as you've already come to know, the Holy Grail War is a most unusual conflict. One where Ruler Class servants, epitomes of impartiality, order and neutrality are both allowed to exist and rarities scarcely appearing within various editions of the war." Many questions had formed in the duo's minds with this latest revelation, but they would settle for asking the most obvious one for simplicity's sake.
"Why are they so rare?" Asked Skurd.
"They are only summoned when the organizers of whatever edition of the war is being held deem it necessary to ensure fairness and order. A precaution that they wouldn't normally have to take. But with Matruant's presence and the threat it poses, and my efforts to contain said threat's influence, they have made an exception with this war." Explained Paradox.
"I get that much, but did it have to be a Ruler Class specifically? Is there anything wrong with me having a Servant from any of the other classes?" Asked Ben with evident curiosity.
"All valid questions, Benjamin." Responded Paradox lightheartedly.
"In of itself, you being the Master of a Servant from a different class isn't of any consequence. The problem however arises with one fundamental structure of how the Holy Grail War is held. That being the limits on the availability of the seven distinct Servant classes. The standard rule is that each of the seven classes can only manifest once in a single Holy Grail War. This means that there can't be two Servants of the same class, such as two Sabers or two Archers, in the same war."
"Are we to assume that there already exists Masters who have Servants of the seven classes participating in this edition of the Holy Grail War?" Hypothesized Skurd.
"Precisely." Said Paradox in approval, content that he caught on.
"It is done to ensure diversity and strategic balance along with added complexity and variety to the battles that unfold. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses, forcing Masters to strategize effectively based on their Servant's class and abilities."
"Long story short, it exists to keep things interesting." Said Ben bluntly.
"You would not be wrong to see it that way." Smiled Paradox.
"But with the Ruler Class Servant fulfilling such a unique role that is in benefit to the success of the Holy Grail War, it is an obvious exception to this rule." Mused Skurd.
"Precisely, thus granting you Benjamin, entry to participate in the War that you would originally be denied." Said Paradox in agreement.
"And with such a unique role in enforcing the rules of the Holy Grail War justly, would it be far -fetched to assume being a Master of a Ruler Class Servant doesn't come with a unique catch?" Speculated Skurd.
"Your deduction skills are most praiseworthy, Skurd." Said Paradox to sincerity.
"I impress even myself beyond compare" Said Skurd proudly, causing Ben to roll his eyes unconvinced and Paradox to smile in amusement.
"Being a Master of a Ruler Class servant also gives you a distinct role different from your peers, Benjamin. A role that sees you become a Master and also a Ruler. You'll have a dual responsibility – to summon and command your Servant, and to maintain order and fairness in the War." Explained Paradox.
Ben's eyes widened, and his expression shifted from curiosity to a mixture of surprise and determination. "Wait, I'll be a Ruler? What does that mean, exactly?"
Paradox's tone grew more solemn as he explained the significance, "As a Ruler, you'll have the duty to uphold the rules and ensure that no participants, Masters or Servants, violate them. Your role is crucial in maintaining balance and preventing any potential disruptions or abuses of power."
"Potential disruptions that we have one individual to hold accountable for should they occur." Said Skurd with a hint of resignation, the obvious implication at Maltruant unsettling both he and Ben.
"In doing so, think of yourself as a referee, with a fierce battlefield being the court which you preside over, ensuring that the Holy Grail War proceeds justly." Added Paradox for clarity
"Would this not mean that Ben will not directly participate in combat like the other Masters?" Chimed in Skurd once more, his curiosity evident.
Paradox nodded in response, "That's correct. While you'll have your Servant at your disposal, your primary role as a Ruler is to oversee the war and step in when necessary to enforce the rules. It's a challenging and pivotal position, but one that can influence the outcome of the War significantly."
"But that'd also mean I'd have to play a neutral party, not acting on my own personal stakes in this war. If that's true, wouldn't that mean that trying to win and say use the Grail to make a wish that might make stopping Maltruant that much easier something I have to give up on?" Asked Ben with evident uncertainty on whether this was an optimal strategy.
"Yes, you would most likely have to give up on using the Holy Grail's power to grant your wish, but it is for a greater purpose." Admitted Paradox with absolutely certainty which naturally piqued Ben's interest on why that could be.
"In this edition of the Holy Grail War, you will inevitably come across individuals who will become adversaries seeking to ensure that you will pose no hindrance in them achieving their self-driven agendas. But you will also come across allies as well. Those whose motives for participating in the Holy Grail War are far more noble, and should they be actualized, would be far more beneficial to not just the world around, but the greater universe as a whole."
"Your role as a Ruler puts you in a position that allows you to act the most true to yourself and your morals, Benjamin. Seeing to it that justice is upheld, and that those who would seek to trample on it do not prevail. Protecting the innocent and righteous and stopping those who would approach them with malicious intent in hopes of causing them harm." Paradox's words inevitably struck a chord with Ben.
After all, it was a direct call to action that banked on his heroism and morality.
And as such, Ben's inevitable response, though obvious, would be poignant nonetheless.
"It might be a different universe, but I'm still Ben 10. Stopping Maltruant might be the endgame, but doing what's right is important to me all the same. If it's that, then I'll do whatever it takes, even if it means being a referee in this crazy battle." Said Ben with unwavering determination, making it twice within the night that he had impressed both Paradox and Skurd at the same time.
"Excellent. We can now move on to the final step." Said a much pleased Paradox right before raising his right hand. With a snap of his fingers, the campfire would suddenly be put out, and a bright blue light in the form of a ring would surround them, taking Ben and Skurd off guard.
"What's happening?!" Asked Skurd with a mixture of confusion and panic. The light would vanish, and upon doing so, both Ben and Skurd would immediately notice a most unusual development.
The very floor on which they stood on was now designed with a wide circle with intricate and visually striking magical diagrams along with precise geometric patterns colored red. Its inscription seemed to be a combination of complex symbols, lines, and runes. At its center was a prominent symbol reminiscent of the Command Seal on Ben's arm. As a finishing touch was intersecting lines that connected various parts of the circle.
"What…What exactly are we standing on?" Asked Ben, regaining his composure.
"This is a Summoning Circle. One of the prerequisites required for you to summon your Servant." Explained Paradox casually.
"Would be best if we take a step outside of the circle so as not to potentially muddy the line work." With another snap of his fingers, Paradox, Ben and Skurd would find themselves enveloped by a blue light that would teleport them outside of the portal as Paradox suggested, much to the latter two's surprise.
"Much better. Now for the final item before we begin." Ben and Skurd would instinctively look up as they saw what appeared to be an object engulfed in the same blue light that enveloped them previously floating above their heads. It would then materialize into an object whose appearance was more discernible.
It was a large, ornate flag with a distinctive design. It featured a white banner adorned with fleur-de-lis symbols.
"What's with the flag?" Asked Ben,more confused than unimpressed, but still relatively curious.
"This Benjamin, is 'La Pucelle', which can also be referred to as the 'Flag of Jeanne d'Arc. Both the name of the catalyst of the Servant you are about to summon and the name of the Servant herself." Explained Paradox.
"Her?" Asked Ben, completely taken aback by his Servant being a girl.
"Correct, Benjamin. But make no mistake, Jeanne d'Arc is not just anyone. She is one of the most deserving Servants of the Class they represent. Her legend is truly timeless." The reverence in Paradox's voice was not lost on the two, making them all the more curious who this figure chosen to be their ally and praises sung by the time-walker could be.
"Jeanne d'Arc," Paradox began, "is a legendary figure from Earth's history. In our own world's timeline, you know her as Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans."
Ben furrowed his brow, recognizing the name but not fully comprehending its significance. "Joan of Arc? Wasn't she that girl who led France during some war or something?"
Paradox nodded in affirmation. "Right on track, Benjamin. Joan of Arc was a young woman who lived in the 15th century during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. She claimed to have received divine visions that led her to believe she had a mission from God to help the French crown. Against all odds, she played a pivotal role in turning the tide of the war."
"So, she was a hero, like a real-life superhero? Like me?" Asked Ben, his curiosity obviously piqued.
"In a way, yes," Paradox replied with a knowing smile. "She inspired her countrymen and led them to significant victories. Her unwavering faith and courage made her a symbol of hope. She's been revered for centuries as a national heroine of France."
"Sounds like quite the inspirational figure." Said an impressed Skurd.
Paradox nodded. "Indeed, she is. And her heroic deeds and unwavering dedication to her cause have left an indelible mark on history. That's why she's become a Heroic Spirit, a legendary figure whose spirit persists beyond her earthly life."
"A Heroic Spirit who's going to be my Servant?" Asked an awe struck Ben, the implication of the responsibility this would bring not lost in him.
Paradox nodded once more. "Yes, and as her Master and Ruler, you'll have the unique opportunity to command her and ensure that the Holy Grail War proceeds justly."
Ben had gone silent, allowing the weight of the role he had been given sink in and the responsibility that came with it.
"Though I am most certain that you understand the significance of the Heroic Spirit that you will come to call your Servant, I do still believe that it is best to gain a select form of additional information on her. One which can give you a valuable added perspective." Stated Paradox.
"What would you suggest, Paradox?" Asked Skurd.
"The history of her catalyst, La Pucelle." Paradox continued, " Though it may seem as such,it is not just any ordinary flag. It's a powerful relic with deep significance to Jeanne d'Arc's legend. In her time, she carried a similar banner into battle, and it became a symbol of her divine mission."
He paused for a moment, letting the weight of the relic's history sink in. "You see, La Pucelle, or 'The Maiden,' as it's sometimes called, was said to have been blessed by the heavens. Jeanne, as you will come to call her, believed it to be a direct sign of God's favor, and it bolstered the morale of her troops."
Both Ben and Skurd couldn't help but be amazed at the relic's history.
"So, it's like a source of power and inspiration for her." Theorized Ben.
"Exactly," Paradox confirmed. "It's not just a piece of cloth; it's a symbol of her unwavering faith and her connection to a higher purpose. But it also represents a tragedy that haunts her to this day." The sudden tone shift in Paradox's voice from admiration to somberness alarmed the duo, and despite the sense of dread that ensued, made them all the more eager to find out the cause.
"Jeanne was eventually captured by her enemies and subjected to a trial that ultimately led to her being accused of heresy. Despite her unwavering faith and her divine mission, she was sentenced to death by burning at the stake."
"How barbaric!' Exclaimed Skurd.
"That's terrible!" Said Ben in agreement, feeling a mixture of displeasure and righteous fury .
"How could they do that to her?!"
"It was a complex and troubled time," Paradox explained. "People in positions of power often feared what they didn't understand, and Jeanne's actions were seen as a threat to the established order. Her execution was a dark chapter in history, but it also solidified her legend as a martyr."
Paradox then looked at La Pucelle, the relic floating above them. "La Pucelle, her flag, became a symbol not just of her victories, but also of her sacrifice. It represents her unwavering faith, her courage in the face of adversity, and her willingness to stand up for what she believed was right, even at the cost of her own life."
Ben's disposition had become more reserved, feeling a sense of somberness but also admiration.
"So, in a way, La Pucelle embodies her spirit and her legacy." The respect was evident in his voice.
Paradox nodded. "Indeed, Ben. It's a relic that carries the weight of history, both the triumphs and the tragedies. And now, it will serve as a source of strength for you and Jeanne d'Arc as you embark on this righteous task."
"It's more than just a banner; it's a symbol of resilience and the pursuit of justice." Skurd would say solemnly, his previous anger now replaced with bubbling resolve.
"If we are to truly count ourselves as allies to her, then we must make sure her legacy lives on."
Paradox smiled, clearly pleased with their understanding. "I have no doubt that you will, my dear friends."
"Now, it's time to complete the summoning ritual and call forth Jeanne d'Arc, so that she may lend you her strength." Ben would clench his left hand readily, gazing at the Command Seal on the back of it.
"What do you need me to do?" Asked Ben eagerly, as La Pucelle would then reappear at the center of the Summoning Circle, placed gently inside it.
"Before we commence with the summoning, you must first know more about the bond shared between a Master and a Servant." Replied Paradox.
"The strength of the Master-Servant bond is of great importance, as it directly affects a Servant's ability to manifest their full power. The choice of a Master can also influence a Servant's performance. Specifically a harmonious partnership, where each party's individuality is allowed to thrive and a common goal is strived towards with cooperation and understanding from both sides, can unlock hidden potential and abilities within a Servant."
"Conversely, a strained or incompatible Master-Servant relationship, where the Servant's will and wellbeing is completely neglected in a bid to have them operate as tools that exist only to do the Master's bidding, can lead to limitations and hinder their performance." Ben would find himself irritated at the mere prospect of treating a living being's existence as insignificant if not directly to your benefit.
"Masters must also provide their Servants with Mana to maintain their physical form and abilities during the Holy Grail War. Managing Mana efficiently is a crucial skill for any Master. Going back to your question on how much magic you can use currently, you are yet to fully accustom yourself to the Mystical Eyes, so you're quite lacking in the proficiency expected of a Master." Ben would find himself somewhat deflated by that revelation.
"However, your potential is quite high, and will only continue to grow with time. If I were to accurately describe your magical capabilities currently, specifically your output of mana, it would be on par with your cousin Gwendolyn from when she was 10 years old." Though Paradox's encouragement wasn't lost on him, Ben had essentially been entranced at the mention of Gwen's name.
"Really?" Said Ben with a mixture of hope and sadness. Hope at the possibility that he could live up to the potential of his now deceased cousin, Gwen, and further honor her legacy. Sadness, that she was gone.
"Yes indeed. And though compared to the average Master it might not be much, it shall more than suffice for a successful first summoning of Jeanne, which will allow you to set the terms of your Master-Servant Contract." Assured Paradox of which Ben would nod in response.
"Now, shall we see to it that this stage of your preparations is successful?" Asked Skurd rhetorically.
"We shall at once. This might have been the most mundane aspect in terms of fulfilling the right conditions, but it is sure to be the most rewarding." Said Paradox eagerly.
"What conditions did you fulfill with this one exactly?" Asked a curious Skurd.
"To draw the Summoning Circle? Refined Mercury, blood of three well-bred roosters and chalk." Said Paradox in a manner of fact tone.
"Sounds quite…daunting." Said Skurd with a hint of repulsion and sympathy, a sentiment shared by Ben.
"You don't know the half of it. The most captivating by far of the prerequisites to acquire was the acquisition of La Pucelle. With it not being from this timeline,it was quite the tumultuous task, but worth it all in the end more." Said Paradox, his disposition shifting from dread to enthusiasm as quick as a hat.
"So it would seem. Now shall we put them to good use?" Asked Skurd, eagerly awaiting Paradox's approval.
"Most certainly." Said Paradox in agreement.
"Ben, this is the final stage of the Summoning Ritual, and its success relies solely on you; the Incantation of Summoning." Ben stared at Paradox attentively, ready to follow his every word.
"This process of the ritual is not just a mere call to summon the Servant; it's a sacred ceremony that taps into the deepest connection between a Master and their chosen Heroic Spirit." Paradox's tone was calming and sincere, filling Ben with a sense of clarity.
"To begin, you must focus your thoughts on the Heroic Spirit you wish to summon, in this case, Jeanne d'Arc. Think of her legend, her unwavering faith, and her indomitable spirit. Let her image fill your mind completely. Once you've connected with her on a spiritual level, you'll recite the incantation. It's a chant that serves as a bridge between your world and the Throne of Heroes, where Heroic Spirits reside." It was that clarity that he felt that made believe that this part of Paradox's instruction was quite feasible, even though it was an entirely new concept to him.
"I think I've got it." Said Ben after a moment of self reflection.
Paradox smiled, satisfied with Ben's compliance "Very good. Continue to follow my lead, and all will be well."
Ben nodded, his determination evident.
"You are currently standing at the edge of the circle, and directly facing the relic, La Pucelle. I shall step outside of it as only you are required to be inside it." Paradox would do exactly as he said, leaving Ben and Skurd inside the edge of the circle.
"Now,place your left hand on your Command Seal to establish a stronger connection."
As Ben followed Paradox's instructions, he felt a subtle surge of energy coursing through his body. It was the power of the Command Seal, resonating with his intent to summon Jeanne d'Arc.
"Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus your thoughts solely on Jeanne d'Arc," Paradox instructed. "Imagine her presence beside you, ready to answer your call. Visualize her in your mind's eye."
Ben obeyed, shutting his eyes and doing his best to concentrate on the heroic figure he had learned about just moments ago. He pictured a young woman in shining armor, carrying La Pucelle, her flag, with unwavering resolve.
"Now, recite the incantation that comes from the very depths of your heart " Paradox prompted.
Ben took another deep breath and, with unwavering determination, began to recite the incantation. His voice was firm and filled with conviction:
"I call you forth in need of your strength, but not as a tool. I ask that you put your trust in me so that I can also put my trust in you. l count on you to enact my will, that I may keep the innocent safe and stop those who would cause them harm. Through the Grail's call, I ask that you fight by side, not as my lesser, but as an equal. A partner!"
As Ben finished the incantation, he felt a surge of magical energy emanating in the form of pink from the Command Seal on his hand. The energy flowed into La Pucelle, the relic at the center of the Summoning Circle, causing it to glow with a brilliant light.
The air around them seemed to crackle with electricity, and a powerful presence began to manifest within the circle. It was as if the very essence of Jeanne d'Arc herself was being drawn into their world.
Ben opened his eyes, feeling a mixture of excitement and anticipation. He glanced at Paradox, who wore a confident smile, and at Skurd, with equal excitement and anticipation on his face. The summoning ritual was well underway, and they were about to witness the arrival of Jeanne d'Arc, the Maid of Orleans.
As the light continued to intensify, the air seemed to vibrate with power. The moment they had been working towards, the summoning of their Ruler Class Servant, was about to become a reality.
The intensity of the light reached its peak, and for a brief moment, it seemed as if the entire world held its breath. Then, with a burst of radiant energy, La Pucelle shattered into countless shimmering fragments that danced through the air like stars.
From the center of the Summoning Circle, a figure began to materialize. She emerged slowly, as if stepping out from another dimension. Her armor gleamed like polished silver, and the iconic banner, La Pucelle, was held firmly in her hand.
It was her. Jeanne d'Arc.
Where would he begin?
That was a question he currently had no answer to, as her presence shook him to his very core.
Emerald green eyes met pure colored amethyst. A gaze that had him completely stun locked. Her eyes were filled with such boundless determination complemented with genuine kindness that he was effectively entranced by then. But the other parts of her being saw to it that the entrancement wouldn't last.
Her stunning blonde hair, dashing black garment, fabulous armor, well defined figure and well toned physique, coupled with the aura of calm and authority that she radiated made her every bit of the legendary figure he had envisioned during the incantation and more.
Her beauty was one that scarcely felt real, and to be in her presence was a privilege that he felt undeserving of.
Jeanne d'Arc looked at Ben with a gentle smile that made his heart flutter. "I am Jeanne d'Arc. Are you to be my Master?" she said in a voice that held a touch of warmth and grace.
Ben, his cheeks tomato red, overwhelmed by the entire experience, managed to find his voice, albeit not very subtly,as he began to clear his throat. "Um, yeah…i-i'm Ben Tennyson, and this is Skurd," he introduced himself and his companion. "We're your Masters."
Skurd found himself greatly amused by Ben's nervousness, but refrained from teasing him on it, as he was touched by Ben's gesture as including him as one of Jeanne's Masters.
"It is an honor to meet you, Ben Tennyson." Jeanne replied with a nod.
"And you as well...Skurd." Jeanne trailed off, unable to ignore the unusual creature latched onto her Master's person.
"My apologies. I have never seen a being such as you." Said Jeanne with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. She had greatly subdued her true feelings of shock and repulsion towards Skurd in a bid of showing respect to her Master.
"It is quite alright, for you honor me with your presence, Lady Jeanne." Said Skurd formally with a bow, holding no ill feelings towards Jeanne.
"So you are the enforcer of the rules in this Holy Grail War, correct?" Asked Skurd.
Jeanne nodded. "Indeed, I am here to ensure fairness and justice prevail in this war. My role is to uphold the rules and prevent any violations.I am here to serve and protect, as is my duty as a Ruler Class Servant."
"Can we count on you then, Jeanne, to help us know how all this works? We're pretty new to this whole Holy Grail War thing." Said Ben, seeing this as an opportunity to learn more about the rules that he too would have to uphold eventually.
"Do not fret Ben Tennyson, for we will face this challenge together. With your determination and my guidance, we shall strive for a righteous outcome." Said Jeanne as she smiled kindly, causing a small smile to form on Ben's face.
Paradox, who had been observing the summoning with great interest, stepped forward. "Congratulations, Ben, Skurd, on successfully summoning your Servant. You are now officially participants in the Holy Grail War."
Ben felt a mix of emotions—excitement, responsibility, and a touch of nervousness. He was now part of an extraordinary conflict with stakes higher than he could have imagined. But he also had an incredible ally in Jeanne d'Arc, and he was determined to make the most of this opportunity.
What better to seize this opportunity than to ensure that his latest ally was aware of the overarching threat in Maltruant that he was gearing to face and hopefully would lend him her strength to stop him.
"Alright then." Began Ben as he let out a deep breath, indicating that what he was going to say next was something he had put quite a lot of thought into.
"Not exactly sure how to start with this, so I'll just say it however I can and hope for the best."
"Is something bothering you, Ben Tennyson?" Asked a concerned Jeanne.
"Actually, yeah. But now that you're here, I'm hoping it can bother me a lot less." Said Ben with a sense of assurance, indicating that he truly believed what he just said.
Then the realization hit him.
What he just said.
"Ah! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean for it to come out like that!" Shouted a flustered Ben, red with embarrassment.
"I do not understand. For what to come out like…what?" Said a visibly confused Jeanne.
"Forget what I said!" Shouted Ben defensively.
"Wait, no! Don't forget what I said, just forget how I said it!... Gahhh!" Groaned Ben in frustration as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
Skurd, and even Paradox were most amused by the Omnitrix bearer's plight.
"Lemme just dial it back to one here." Said Ben with a deep sigh as he regained his composure.
"I know you have a special duty to uphold in the Holy Grail War as a Ruler Class Servant. And I don't intend to get in the way of you doing that at all. If anything I'd like to help you out with it however I can."
"I would gladly accept your help, Ben Tennyson." Said Jeanne sincerely.
"I'm glad to hear that. But there's something I'd need your help with too, if it's not too much to ask." Ben said, devoid of any previous nervousness.
"There's a being called Maltruant who I have a strong hunch is going to interfere in the Holy Grail War if not outright participate. I don't know the full extent of what he's planning but what I do know is that I have to…no, i need to stop him no matter what." The seriousness in Ben's voice sent a small chill down Jeanne's spine, but that couldn't be told from her outwardly calm disposition.
"Because if I fail, all life as you and I both know it…will cease to exist." Ben would briefly say silent so as to let the weight of his words fully sink in. A weight that he, Skurd and Paradox knew all too well.
"I know this might be too much to ask, and may not at all have been what you signed up for. But when the time comes, when I inevitably have to face Maltruant...can I ask you to lend me your strength?" For Ben, that shred of uncertainty that existed in his mind on what Jeanne's response would be brought forth doubt that it would be a favorable one.
But for Jeanne, there was not a doubt in her mind,or heart, on what she had to do.
"Stand tall, Ben Tennyson, and worry not. For if it is to protect the lives of all that exists, I will gladly fight alongside you." Ben's eyes would briefly widen in shock, the part of himself that had felt doubt not expecting this outcome, before narrowing as he formed a warm smile, feeling himself foolish for thinking that there could ever be another outcome.
"Thank you." Said Ben with utmost sincerity, a weight lifted off his shoulder.
Now able to take comfort that he had one more ally he could face the oncoming challenges with together.
Suddenly, an unprecedented phenomenon would occur, as Jeanne would begin to flicker, almost as if shifting between visible and translucent.
"What's happening?!" Asked an alarmed Jeanne.
"It's from my end. I must have reached my limit on my mana." Explained Ben despite being also shocked.
"I see." Said Jeanne in understanding.
"It was nice meeting you Master Ben…and Master Skurd." Said Jeanne with a bow, slightly taking Ben off guard.
"Likewise, Lady Jeanne." Responded Skurd with a bow as well.
"It was very nice meeting you too." Said Ben with a sincere smile before realizing his latest blunder.
"Sorry that came out too strong!" Shouted Ben, embarrassed.
But to his surprise, Jeanne laughed.
"It's quite alright, Ben Tennyson." Chuckled Jeanne heartily.
"Oh…alright. But call me Ben if you prefer." Said Ben, though still visibly taken aback.
"Very well." Said Jeanne in compliance as she flashed Ben a warm smile.
"Until we meet again…Ben."
For a moment, there would be absolute silence that stood between the three individuals, allowing the void caused by Jeanne's absence to waver.
"That went far better than I imagined." Skurd would eventually say
"Easy for you to say." Sighed Ben, visibly distraught, but not for the immediate reason one might think.
"Why did she have to be so pretty?" Ben's rather unusual confession would cause a chuckle to escape Paradox's lips. Something Skurd noticed.
"I agree with the lad, Professor. Such a fair maiden is far too much for the dear boy's heart to bear, or brain to endure." Teased Skurd as he addressed Paradox.
Ben would flick Skurd with his index finger in retaliation, causing Skurd's body to Bob and weave back and forth, making him dizzy.
"Do ease up on your teasing a bit, Skurd. For Young Benjamin has done a most splendid job this night." Paradox's tone of amusement laced with sincerity immediately drew Ben and Skurd's attention towards him.
"You have not only successfully summoned a Servant, but also formed a contract which will prove to be most valuable in the oncoming trials, of which I am sure you will prevail."
"This wouldn't be possible without your help, Paradox." Said Ben modestly.
"You have our utmost thanks." Said Skurd sincerely.
"Think nothing of it, for you most certainly have mine." With another snap of his fingers, the Summoning Circle would completely disappear. And in its place, the campfire would return.
"You brought the campfire back." Said Ben,his surprise evident.
"An appreciation for a more simple scenery perhaps, Professor?" Asked Skurd.
"Certainly, Skurd. But not just for the calming air its tranquil atmosphere provides, but also for the nostalgia its familiar scenery evokes." The unsubtle glance from Paradox hinted that those words bore some meaning that Ben specifically was meant to understand.
But for now, he was none the wiser.
"Nostalgia? Familiar? I don't know what you mean by that, Profess…" He would cut himself off as his eyes instinctively began to observe every nook and cranny of the forest in an attempt to make sense of Paradox's premonition.
And upon seeing the star filled skies once more, the reflection of the moonlight gracing the Earth, the thickness of the trees surrounding them, and feeling the cool night air on his skin, all the necessary constellations aligned for Ben to come to a powerful realization.
"This place…it's…"
"Yes, Benjamin. For though our universe may currently no longer exists, and with it, everything we once knew is now lost, we live not only to hope for a better day, and fight for a better fate, but also to craft a new destiny for ourselves. A new beginning. Just like how you experienced a new beginning in your life that fateful summer night, 7 years ago." Stated Paradox.
"I do not follow." Said Skurd, evidently confused.
"I deliberately chose this place and created this campfire at this very spot because of it's innate similarity to the park where Young Benjamin first found the Omnitrix on a summer night with his cousin and grandfather." Skurd would find himself in stunned silence by this revelation.
"I had hoped that by being in somewhere even remotely familiar to a place of great emotional significance to you, it would ease your fears and insecurities even if only slightly, and help you strengthen your resolve, even if only faintly."
Ben stood there, surrounded by the recreated campfire scene, the memories of that fateful night rushing back to him like a tidal wave. He remembered the excitement of discovering the Omnitrix, the initial fear and excitement that came with turning into Heatblast for the first time. The priceless memories shared with Gwen and Grandpa Max, and the path of heroism and adventure that had defined his life ever since.
As he absorbed the significance of this moment, his initial confusion turned into a profound realization. It wasn't just about nostalgia; it was about reminding him of the hero he had become and the journey that had led him here.
With a mixture of emotions welling up within him, Ben finally found his voice. "Paradox, I... I can't believe you did this. You brought me back to that night. It's like you knew exactly what I needed."
Paradox, his enigmatic smile still present, responded, "Sometimes, Benjamin, it's not about knowing what you need, but rather believing in your ability to find the strength within yourself. This place, this moment, is a reminder of how far you've come. Of all you have endured to be the hero that stands before us today.
Ben felt a renewed sense of determination coursing through him. He glanced at the campfire, the stars above, and the forest around him. It was as if the universe itself was telling him that he was ready for this new challenge.
"Thank you, Paradox," Ben said with genuine gratitude. "Thank you for always believing in me."
Skurd, too, was touched by the gesture but chose to express it in his own way. "Aye, Professor, for though I may not have the same fondness or nostalgia as Ben may have for this place, I can most definitely appreciate the sentiment. Having allies who understand us is a most comforting feeling indeed."
Paradox nodded, his eyes sparkling with wisdom. "It is my utmost pleasure."
"And my utmost joy." Paradox suddenly added. "As the scenery here is one you can enjoy as much as you want at your leisure. For it is in the nation which is the heart of the location where the Holy Grail War usually occurs."
"Talk about a plot twist." Said Ben, evidently surprised but not upset.
"Indeed. And what pray tell, good Professor,is the name of this fine nation that has been plagued with what is most certainly the most unfortunate of conflicts?" Asked Skurd, more over the top than usual.
"We are in the nation of Japan, gentlemen, and in the city of Fuyuki." Said Paradox slyly.
"The Japan I get. Fuyuki? Not so much." Stated Ben bluntly.
"That is to be expected, Benjamin. After all, Fuyuki does not exist in our universe. But it does in this one." Said Paradox simply.
"Anything we should know about the city? You know, apart from it being in Japan and where the Holy Grail War's gonna go down?" Asked a bemused Ben.
Paradox glanced around the recreated campfire scene, as if gathering his thoughts before answering Ben's question. "Fuyuki is a city rich in history and mysticism. It has been the stage for numerous Holy Grail Wars in the past, each leaving its mark on the city's lore and legends."
Ben's curiosity was piqued. "Lore and legends? Like what?"
Paradox continued, his tone almost conspiratorial. "The city is said to be a focal point of supernatural energy, which is why it's chosen as the battleground for the Holy Grail War. But this energy has attracted more than just Heroic Spirits; it has given rise to various supernatural phenomena over the years."
"Phenomena like what exactly, Professor?" Asked Skurd, intrigued.
Paradox chuckled softly. "Ghosts, spirits, and even creatures of myth and legend have been known to wander the streets of Fuyuki. Some believe that the city itself is alive with magic, and that its history is intertwined with the Grail War."
Ben couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. "So, we're not just dealing with other Masters and Heroic Spirits. We might encounter all sorts of supernatural stuff?"
Paradox nodded, his expression serious. "Indeed, Ben. Fuyuki is a city of mysteries, and you should be prepared for the unexpected. But remember, you have Jeanne by your side, and together, whatever challenges may come your way, no matter how improbable they may seem at first, so long as you all work together, eventually, overcoming them will be inevitable."
Ben exchanged a confident look with Skurd. "That's no problem at all, Paradox, Skurd and I have faced our fair share of the tall, dark and spooky. This might as well be just another walk in the park for us. Right, Skurd?"
Skurd grinned and nodded. "Aye, Ben, but with a twist. And twists make things interesting."
"So it would seem, but know that as you face these anomalies of the supernatural, realize that you must also form a balance with the normal and mundane as well. A means that allows you to enjoy life in this universe, however fleeting as it may be, beyond your usual heroics, and more in line with an adolescence of your age." Insisted Paradox.
"I think I know where this is going." Said Ben,his displeasure evident.
"I know your enthusiasm for this prospect is practically non-existent, but it is essential for giving you an added background that injects a level of normalcy to what will eventually be your far from normal endeavors as a Master. Normalcy that will make it more feasible for you to draw allies that can not just help you establish a semblance of a normal life in this universe, but help you to protect other life as well."
An immediate realization would flash into Skurd's mind, making him to ask."Are you suggesting…"
"That you may meet potential allies in the Grail War through a guise that makes you more in line with the everyman? Most certainly." Said Paradox, confirming Skurd's suspicion.
"So how do we get that ball rolling?" Asked Ben, though his enthusiasm was low, his curiosity was piqued and his willingness to comply with whatever directive Paradox gave him hadn't waned significantly.
"With this." Once again Paradox would snap his fingers, and once again, the scenery would change. But this was the most dramatic change yet.
No longer were they in the open, unrestricted space of a forest, but the small, enclosed but secure space of a home.
"Wha…" Was the words Ben managed to utter, as both he and Skurd were currently speechless.
"For the duration of your stay in this universe, this will be your new home. Began Paradox, amidst the duo's disbelief.
"Though quite shabby, it will suffice both as a place of rest and as a close enough location to where your new life of normalcy in this universe will begin." Said Paradox with a mixture of assurance and excitement.
"Ugh, still on that, I see." Groaned Ben, now out of his previous trance of shock.
"Eh, I guess the house is a fair trade off." Said Ben as he laid down on the sofa in the living room, quickly making himself comfortable.
"Where are the residents of the home?" Asked Skurd.
"They're already here. You two." Said Paradox cheekily.
"You mean…" Began Ben in shock.
"It was a tedious endeavor finding a house that fulfilled all the necessary criteria to both accommodate you two and allow you to act on our most recent agreement, but after some in depth searching on my part,I finally came across this beauty. The house is yours, gentlemen." Said Paradox confidently.
"Sweet." Said Ben in approval.
"But how does a 17 year old boy explain to those who may or may not be acquaintances how he's able to live alone in a house this large without any guardians present to look after him?" Said Skurd hypothetically.
Paradox smiled knowingly, already having a solution in mind. "Ah, a valid concern, Skurd. But I have a perfectly plausible explanation for that. As far as anyone is concerned, your parents are currently not in the country."
Ben raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "You mean like a vacation or something?"
"Exactly," replied Paradox. "To outsiders, your parents are on an extended vacation or a business trip abroad. They've entrusted you with the house while they're away, and you've decided to live independently during their absence. It's not uncommon for parents to leave their teenage children in charge for a while."
Ben chuckled at the idea. "So, basically, I'm on 'house-sitting' duty, except it's my own house?"
"Exactly," Paradox repeated. "It's a perfectly reasonable cover story, and it will deter any unwanted inquiries or suspicions about your living situation. You're simply a responsible young adult looking after the family home while your parents are away."
Skurd nodded in agreement. "That should work. It's mundane enough to fly under the radar."
Ben couldn't help but be impressed by Paradox's thoroughness. "You really thought of everything, huh?"
"I try my best," Paradox replied with a wink. "Now, enjoy your new home and make the most of your 'house-sitting' experience. And remember, it's all part of your cover story to maintain a semblance of normalcy in this universe while you embark on your duties as a Master in the Holy Grail War."
"About to leave already, Professor?" Asked Skurd.
"I'm afraid so." Began Paradox solemnly.
"Aside from my duties of keeping balance across all of space and time, I can't stay in this universe for too long for fear that Maltruant may detect my presence. I've already gone to great lengths to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the battles ahead. Lengths that have seen me influence elements and variables within this timeline and others to your benefit."
Ben looked at Paradox with gratitude in his eyes. "We appreciate everything you've done for us, Paradox. You've been a huge help in getting us ready for this Holy Grail War."
Skurd nodded in agreement. "Aye, you've given us quite the head start."
Paradox smiled warmly. "It's been my pleasure, gentlemen. But before I depart, there are a few things you must know."
Ben and Skurd exchanged curious glances as they waited for Paradox to continue.
"As you may already suspect, Maltruant will most likely seek to make allies of his own. Whether they be like minded or find themselves as part of his envoy to further his own ambitions is irrelevant, but the threat they pose is a great one all the same." Paradox cautioned. "I say this as though the exact nature of their alliance with Maltruant is currently unknown to me, the danger they pose is not.
"How many of them are there?" Asked Ben sternly.
Paradox's expression grew serious. "Three to be exact. The first one, Gilgamesh, is an Archer-class Servant, and one of the most powerful and arrogant foes you'll face. His abilities and arrogance make him a most formidable opponent. Extreme Caution around him is of utmost importance
"And the other two?" Asked Skurd, interested in this warning.
"The second, Kirei Kotomine," Paradox continued. "He is a cunning and ruthless Master who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. And finally, Shinji Matou, another fellow Master who though may not be the most skilled, is still quite unpredictable, and can be dangerous in his own way."
"We'll be sure to take your warnings to heart, Paradox. If they're with Maltruant, they've gotta be bad news. But we've beaten worse guys before, and we'll beat these guys too." Said Ben with a mixture of affirmation, determination and confidence.
"So long as you remember that your strength comes from relying on each other, and those who will inevitably come to rely on you, there is nothing that can truly stand in your way." Advised Paradox.
"We won't let you down." Nodded Ben.
"I have every confidence in you, Benjamin." As if on cue, a blue portal would open right behind Paradox after he spoke.
"However, I do suppose I can afford to impart you both with some information privy to me that you might find quite valuable." Smirked Paradox, causing Ben to smirk as well.
"We're all ears, Professor." Said Skurd smugly.
"Skurd, you previously asked me if there existed a name for this reality's multiverse." The Slimebiot nodded in response.
Paradox couldn't help but chuckle at Skurd's smugness. " Well, in this reality, the multiverse goes by a name that might sound quite poetic to you. It's known as 'The World,' and it's a central concept in this particular universe."
Skurd's curiosity piqued, and he leaned in, ready to absorb this new knowledge. "The World, you say? Tell me more."
Paradox adopted a contemplative expression. "In essence, The World is the collective term for all the different timelines, dimensions, and realities that exist parallel to one another. Each of them has its unique set of events, characters, and possibilities. And The World encompasses them all, like a vast tapestry of existence."
Ben, who had been listening intently, chimed in. "So, it's like a giant puzzle with endless pieces, and each piece is a different version of reality?"
Paradox nodded in agreement. "Exactly, Ben. And what's fascinating is that certain individuals, like the Heroic Spirits you'll encounter in the Holy Grail War, can traverse these different realities and be summoned to participate in events like the Grail War. It is how Jeanne is able to be your Servant and be summoned to this timeline despite not originating from it."
Skurd scratched his chin in thought. "So, it's like a cosmic mixing pot where you can find anything and anyone?"
"In a way, yes," Paradox replied. "It's a testament to the boundless creativity of the multiverse. "
"A multiverse so vast that the prospects it leaves us with may be limitless…" Began Skurd.
"... But if it comes down to it, we're up for the challenge all the same." Said Ben, accurately stating Skurd's train of thought.
"I have no doubt you'll face it head on and emerge stronger from it." Said Paradox as his smile widened.
"As we are on the topic of the strength gained from adversity, Ben, your relationship with Jeanne is one that will bear with it a lot of obstacles, but one that will also open new paths as well. As your bond as Master and Servant strengthens, and potentially becomes something more, you will come to realize that she may need you as much as you need her."
Ben, though initially silent due to shock at this revelation, would steel his resolve, and reply. "I'll do my best, Paradox."
Paradox would smile warmly in approval."And don't forget, time has a way of bringing us back together when the need arises. Whether it be through the very means that has allowed us to meet right now, or through a different design that may see the most unusual of developments play out, our fates still remain intertwined.
With a final nod, Paradox turned and began to enter the portal. With his back turned, his words echoed in Ben and Skurd's minds.
"Farewell for now, my friends. Until we meet again."
Longest first Chapter and Longest Chapter I've written Period! Damn!
Hopefully you all enjoy it, as that would make it worth it.
This story will mostly follow the Unlimited Blade Works Route of the anime adaptation, and may occasionally implement elements from other UBW adaptations.
Irregardless, as this story strives to be a proper crossover, canon divergences are inevitable.
Possible planned continuations so far only include the Heavens Feel anime adaptation movie trilogy. Anything further is unlikely at this time.
Until we meet again, have yourselves a good one.
