After a few more minutes a dark silhouette stood out amongst the white snow. A building.

Jess held tighter to Blaire's arm as she picked up their pace.

Stepping inside of the old decrepit house Jess sighed.

The windows were shattered, and the walls had holes from rot and wouldn't do much good against the bitter cold, but they were at least out of the wind.

Looking around there was a small cast iron stove in the corner. She shuffled Blaire over and sat her down.

"I'm c, cold J,Jess." Blaire said through chattering teeth.

"Put this on." Jess said as she took off her jacket. She helped Blaire put it on before rubbing her sister's arms vigorously to help warm her up.

"I'm going to try and get a fire started. I saw a wood pile out back. Stay here,"

Blaire nodded as she pulled Jess's jacket tighter around herself.

Jess took a deep breath and prepared herself for the grueling wind. She stepped out and made her way around the back of the shack. Grabbing as much wood as she could carry, she quickly made her way back inside.

Dropping the wood by the stove she looked at Blaire who was starting to giggle.

"What's so funny?" Jess asked as she started to splinter the already split pieces of wood.

"My friend made a joke is all."

Jess looked at her sister confused. "Your friend?"

"Yeah," Blaire said, giggling even more. "His name is Jack."

"Jack? Like Jack Frost? The snowman?"

"Mhm, He's right over there." Blaire says pointing to nothing.

Jess looked up, she was so focused on getting them warm that she hadn't really realized the severity of the situation, until now.

She looked back her sister who was trying to take her jacket off.

"No, no B, keep the jacket on." Jess said as she felt her sister's forehead.

"But I'm hot." Blaire said as she tried again to take off the jacket.

Thinking back to everything their mom had talked about over the years Jess remembered something.

"Hypothermia," she said out loud. "Blaire, keep talking to me okay. I'm going to try and get a fire started. Just keep talking." She said as she threw the wood in the stove. If she didn't get Blaire warm soon her sister could slip into unconsciousness.

In her frantic dash to get wood she hadn't thought of how to actually start the fire. Shit she thought as she looked around.

Rubbing her arms to break the chill she felt something on her wrist. Her eyes grew wide, and she lifted her sleeve, revealing the bracelet her ma gave her one year during a camping trip.

This wasn't just any bracelet, but a survival one. Her ma had given her and Blaire one just in case. Blaire never wore hers, said it was too boyish for her, but Jess always did.

"Yes! Ma you're a genius." She shouted as she removed her bracelet. Hurriedly she pulled the bracelet apart to reveal a flint rod.

Sticking the rod a few times, Jess cursed. "Damnit! The wood is too damp." Again, Jess looked around, she remembered the small hole in her jacket that she had forgotten to have their mom sew.

Reaching over she began to pull some of the cotton stuffing out. She balled it up and set it inside the stove.

Sticking the flint rod again, she was able to get a small flame. Quickly she added a few smaller, more dry pieces of wood until the flame grew.

She grabbed Blaire who continued to shiver and pulled her close.

When Blaire's words started fading into mumbles Jess would slightly shake her sister and readjust herself.

"Keep talking B, everything will be okay." She said softly, clinging tighter to her sister.

Even though she didn't fully believe her words, she didn't want to think of the worst-case scenario. She just hoped and prayed that the fire would last long enough for the blizzard to die down and their moms to come looking for them.

Jane chewed her nails as she watched the snow whirl around outside. She was lost in thought when Riley approached.

"You should probably go talk to your wife." She said as she leaned against the wall.

"I don't know Coop. She's pretty mad at me and honestly, I don't blame her. This is all my fault. I mean I almost got you all killed, and our girls are out in a damn blizzard. Had I just listened and stayed on course like Maura wanted we wouldn't be in this mess."

"Jane, you can't blame just yourself. We all wanted to come here too. Maura's just worried, go comfort her."

Jane looked towards Maura whose face was buried in her hands. Taking a deep breath, she walked over to her wife. Sitting down next to her on the old dusty couch, Jane coaxed her into her arms.

Maura wrapped her arms around Jane and held tight.

Every minute that passed felt like an eternity. Idle chit chat had stopped as they listened to the wind howling.

Everyone was startled when Frankie's phone rang loudly in the still silence.

"Christ!" Jane remarked, jostling Maura when she jumped.

"That's ma's ringtone." Frankie remarked.

"Why would ma be,"

"The littles!" Jane and Maura said in unison as Maura frantically searched her purse for the ringing phone. Finding it, she quickly answered.

"Angela? What's wrong?"

Maura listened intently as Angela spoke.

Jane tried to hear what her mother was saying but couldn't make anything out. "What's she saying? Is everything okay?" She asked, getting shushed once again.

"An emergency?!" Maura exclaimed, sitting forward.

"What! What happened? Maura tell me!"

"Jane, shush. I can't hear!"

Jane sat on the edge of the couch eagerly waiting. She relaxed a little when Maura sighed in relief.

"Oh, thank God, no, no Angela you did the right thing. I'm sorry we made you worry. Thank you for calling and letting us know. Give the girls our love. Alright, I will, thanks again."

Maura hung up and handed Frankie his phone.

Jane looked at her wife expectantly. "Well? What did she say? Is everything okay? You said something about an emergency."

"It's okay love, calm down." Maura said, realizing Jane was on the verge of a panic attack. "Everything is fine, Angela called to let us know that Maddie was running a fever." Maura held up her hand when she saw Jane's eyes grow wide.

"It's okay, she took them both to the doctor, it's just a common cold, everything is fine. They gave her medication, and they are on their way home."

Jane rubbed at her chest. Her heart, still racing. "Some vacation this is. We have two kids at home sick and two teenagers caught in a blizzard."

"That's a bang-up parenting job there Janie." Tommy remarked with a laugh. When no one else laughed Tommy stopped. "Geez, tough crowd."

"You're such an ass." Riley remarked as she stood to take a look outside.

"Hey Jane?"

"Yeah?"

"Looks like the storm is letting up. We should get out there before we lose any more daylight."

Jane kissed Maura and the forehead and stood up. "Let's go."

"I'm coming with you." Maura said standing.

"No, Maur, stay here."

"Jane!"

"Babe, I know you're worried, but we are losing daylight. Let me and Frankie handle finding the girls. You, Suzie and Anna get whatever warm clothes, snacks and anything else we might need out of the cars. Frost, Tommy, I want you two to find anything that's dry and can burn, then I want you two to help Riley move the couches over by that fireplace. Get the phones and call for help."

"But" Maura tried but Jane just hugged her tightly.

"It's okay Maur. I NEED you to handle things here. I don't know if rescue will come with the amount of snow that has fallen. So, we need to be prepared to spend the night. Frankie and I will find them. Okay?" She asked pulling away to look her in the eyes. Maura nodded before kissing her wife.

"Be careful, bring them back."

Jane nodded. "Let's go Frankie." She said as the two headed out the door. They stopped by the vehicles to grab their guns before heading out into the knee-high snow.
