Wei knew his mother was lying for aunt Lin's sake. He didn't even need seismic sense to measure her heartbeat. So that meant that Team Avatar would probably be leaving a little bit earlier than the morning. He hoped he would be able to say goodbye to Bolin before then. He decided he'd go to the guest house as soon as their parents were done scolding them. He'd been pretty much tuning them out anyway. Perhaps not what the most respectful son would do, but despite his best efforts he couldn't find but a grain of guilt over his actions, other than the sadness over causing his parents distress.

- Alright. Your mother and I will decide on your punishment in the morning. - Baatar Sr finally sighed, fingers combing through his greying hair. -For now, it's straight to bed with you two.-
- But, papa...- Wei started, but gave it up. Despite their gentle parenting methods, Baatar Sr and Suyin were firm when it came to taking disciplinary actions.

- No 'but's- Suyin said, walking towards the exit. - Both of you are going to bed. And that is final.- she opened the door, and Huan fell into the room, along with Baatar Jr. Behind them stood a very guilty looking Kuvira.
- we were just worried!- she immediately apologised, raising her hands.

- And you expressed that by eavesdropping? - Suyin asked, eyebrows raised.
- It was Junior's idea.- Huan stood up, brushing invisible dust off his clothes.
- Kuvira told us what happened! - Baatar Jr responded, as his mother turned her gaze at him- We just wanted to know Wing and Wei were ok.- Behind Su's back Wing mouthed 'liar'. No one could fault their siblings for being curious, though, and Baatar Sr gently placed his hand on the small of his wife's back.

- I think we've all had a long, stressful day and everyone should get some rest. Real rest, this time.- he said, pointedly looking at the twins.
Everyone murmured in agreement, slowly dispersing and going to their respective rooms.

Upon reaching his and Wing's shared bedroom, Wei waited for Wing to go take a shower, before climbing out the window and heading towards the guest house.

Wei found Bolin practicing his bending in the gardens, which probably was for the best. It spared Wei the awkward meeting with the rest of team Avatar, when he only cared to see their earthbender.
Why did he favour Bolin over the others, anyway?

Bolin looked up from his training for a moment, to see Wei. He smiled and waved. - Aren't you supposed to be grounded?-
Wei laughed, entering the garden -I am!-
Bolin dramatically gasped -My! It appears there is an escaped convict in our midst! Here to assassinate the Avatar, no doubt! But fear not!- he announced and sniggered - I shall apprehend him, if it's the last thing I do!-

Wei was already crying with laughter when Bolin launched himself across the garden towards him with a battlecry. They wrestled for a little, but where Wei led in agility and speed, Bolin made up for in strength and body mass, easily pinning him down. They only managed to pretend to have a serious battle for a couple of seconds before bursting into laughter once more. Bolin rolled off of Wei and the two of them lay in the grass, quietly enjoying each other's company.

-How are you feeling?- Bolin was the first to break the silence. -About Aiwei. I mean, you were pretty shaken up about it.-
Wei exhaled a somber breath, rolling onto his side - Better. Just still really, really angry. It hit mom pretty hard. He was a close friend to her. And the entire family. I grew up with him, he was like an uncle to us.-

- I can't imagine what that could feel like.- Bolin mused, rolling over as well, so they faced each other. Wei observed the way he smiled, and how that caused his emerald eyes to light up seemingly on their own, sparkling like precious gems. - Man, it's a shame I couldn't learn any metalbending while I was here. Perhaps I really wasn't cut out for it.- Wei could hear the the regret in Bolin's voice. Suddenly filled with a bizarre determination, he sat up.
- Maybe you can still learn something. -
Bolin looked up at him, puzzled. -Like what?-

- I mean, even if you haven't learned metalbending yet doesn't mean you won't learn it in the future.-
Bolin laughed mirthlessly. -Wei, I've been trying to metalbend since I was like four. No matter what I try, the metal won't budge.-
- That's exactly the problem!- Wei felt himself get swept up in his own exitement. -You keep trying to get the metal to move!-

- But that's the point of metalbending, isn't it?- Bolin was frowning, discombobulated to say the least.
- Maybe- Wei argued.-But when my grandmother was teaching me how to earthbend, the first thing she taught me to do was sense the earth around me. I practiced it for months before I even lifted a pebble. Maybe that's what you need to learn metalbending, to first find and understand the metal and the bits of earth inside it, before you try to bend it.-

- Huh. I've never thought of it like that before. - Bolin murmured, sitting up. His sparkling eyes were wider than those of a child witnessing a firework show for the first time -Show me, please? - he asked and Wei really couldn't say no to the man. He scrambled to find a bit of metal, settling on his own necklace. He passed it to Bolin who held it with a look of almost reverence on his face.

- ...Ok, how does this work?- Bolin asked, vibrating with exitement.
Ok. Right.
Wei moved to sit closer to the earthbender, rearranging the necklace in Bolin's hands so it was lying in his left palm. He then gently took Bolin's right hand and guided his index finger along the metal's cool surface.

- Right there, beneath the surface there's a large chunk of it. Feel it?- he asked and Bolin noded, holding his breath. Wei continued, moving the other's hand slightly to the left. -And here, two of them. One's kinda in the shape of a cube and the other...-
- kinda like a triangle.- Bolin finished for him. Wei smiled, triumphantly.
-See, you got this!- he encouraged, removing his hand, letting Bolin continue on his own.

For a moment, he simply watched Bolin explore the metal. Wei found he could watch him for hours. How he furrowed his lush eyebrows, how he stuck the tip of his tongue out when he focused, the way his eyes gleamed in the setting sun.

- it's like a starry sky- Bolin remarked breathlessly, eyes fixed on the necklace.
- I suppose it is.- Wei responded softly
They fell silent once more.

- Thank you. - Bolin breathed, strangely quiet.
- Don't thank me yet. - Wei joked -You still have a lot of practice to get on my level.-

The air of mystique dissipated as they both laughed. Bolin moved to return the necklace, but Wei objected. -Keep it.- he said. -You'll need something to practice on.-

'It'll be like there's a piece of me gets to travel with you.' He thought, but pursed his lips. Bolin carefully folded the necklace and tucked it into his pocket.
They both stood up.

- Next time we see each other, maybe I'll actually teach you to move it.- Wei gave Bolin's shoulder a playful nudge. The world suddenly became entirely made of Bolin, as the taller boy pulled him into a tight hug. Wei wrapped his arms around him, enjoying the warmth and touch.
- Pabu's really going to miss you.- Bolin whispered, resting his chin on top of his head. Wei chuckled into Bolin's chest, surprised to find that there were tears pricking at his eyes.
- Tell him I'm going to miss him as well.-

Wei never really ended up replacing that necklace.

Wei climbed back into their room, through the window, only to be met by Wing's rascally smile.
- Back from a rendezvous with your lover?- his twin jabbed.
- My 'lover'?- Wei scoffed, feeling his cheeks go red.
- Your true love, swain, sweetheart, inamorato.- Wing pretended to count the nicknames on his fingers.
Wei rolled his eyes -You're insane. -
- And you're in looooooveeeee!- Wing ribbed gleefully.

- I am not!- Wei grabbed a pillow from his bed, bringing it down on Wing's head.
His twin gasped, grabbing a pillow of his own and charging into battle with a childish: -Are too!-

Wei awoke rather early in the morning, draped over Wing, like they had often slept when they were children. The thing that woke him was the sound of yelling coming from the dining room. Curiously, he escaped his brother's embrace and headed towards the noise.

The source of it all turned out to be his aunt Lin, left behind by team Avatar, furious. Su sat at the table, sipping her tea, patiently waiting for her sister to finish ranting and raving. - When will you learn that your actions have consequences?! They could get seriously hurt! You don't know what those criminals are capable of!- she bellowed.
Wei cleared his throat, making his presence known. - I assume Korra and the others are already on Aiwei's trail.-

His aunt whipped around and pointed an accusatory finger at him. - You knew about this?-
Wei shrugged, taking his place at the table -I had a hunch.- He grabbed an apple. The dining table felt strangely empty without team Avatar. Without Bolin.

Lin rubbed her temples, dispirited -Maybe you and your brother should start telling others about your hunches.- she plopped down into her chair.
- I'll agree with you there.- Su fixed her son with a withering look, before turning to her sister again - Lin, you know that Korra's not one to back down from a challenge. She would try to hunt that group down with or without our help.-
- You could not have lied to me.- the chief of police sulked. Su linked their hands.
- But that would just lead to an even bigger argument.-
- I hate to have to agree with you.-
- The best thing you can do for Korra is find reinforcements. My guards and warriors are at your disposal.- she must have seen Wei's hopeful look, because, to his dismay, she added: - Not you. You and Wing are still grounded. -

He would have argued, had he not been interrupted by Kuvira entering with the message that lord Zuko and chief Tonraq of the Southern Water Tribe had just arrived.

Wei had seen Lord Zuko on a couple of occasions, the firebender maintaining a close relationship with Toph and being a sort of uncle to Suyin. The man's dragon still kinda intimidated him though.

Su and Lin greeted both men with a quick bow. Wei and Kuvira followed suit, lingering just out of earshot as their mother quietly explained the situation.
- But you must be tired- Su spoke, inviting them all back inside - and hungry. Please, come in for breakfast. -

- I believe last time we saw each other you had a few more children, Su.- Lord Zuko said, warmly smiling at Kuvira and Wei, his scarred face still oddly youthful.
- Yesterday was quite a day, so I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few of us slept in.- Su explained. As they entered the dining hall, they only found a yawning Baatar Sr, who politely greeted the guests, doing his best to seem aware.

Su quickly gave some orders to Chef, as Tonraq and Zuko took their places, the elder sat to Wei's right. The lord gave the boy a quick look up and down. - You'll have to excuse me, are you Wing or Wei?- he asked, golden eyes once again surprisingly young looking and sharply aware.
- I'm Wei- he responded, genuinely surprised the man even remembered him and his brother.
- Ah, last time i saw you and your twin, you barely reached up to my waist. - he laughed.

Tonraq turned to Lin. -Do you have any idea of where Korra could be?-
She shook her head glumly.- no, she left in the middle of the night- his aunt said, before adding bitterly - thanks to Su.-
- I just gave her the car keys.- Su defended herself, shaking her head slightly. - Korra would have found a way to follow Aiwei on her own anyway, that I'm sure of.-

- Aiwei? Your advisor?- Lord Zuko looked at Su worriedly. Dang, this old man has a good memory, thought Wei. -What does he have to do with all this?-
Su's face clouded.
- Aiwei was conspiring with Zaheer all this time.- Baatar Sr answered in his wife's stead.-We would never have known had team Avatar, along with the twins not uncovered his treachery and almost got blown up in the process. -

As the guests turned to look at him, Wei suddenly felt very self-conscious, bashfully staring holes into his plate. Lord Zuko clasped the boy's shoulder, commending him for his bravery.
- I really didn't do that much...- Wei muttered, momentarily very praise averse.

Tonraq leveled him with an intense gaze that strongly reminded him of Korra.
- Do you remember anything at all that could help us find him, and Korra?- he questioned. Wei racked his brain.
- Not really. The only thing of substance he gave us was when he told Korra she had no idea what was coming for her.- the water tribe chief stiffened. Nobody liked hearing about their child being threatened. Suddenly, a thought occurred to Wei. -But he had to drive a jeep. So did Korra. You can just follow the tracks. They couldn't have gotten far.-

- Good idea, kid.- Lin got up, awkwardly ruffling her nephew's hair, and stalked towards the exit, much to everyone's confusion.
- Where are you going, Lin?- Su called after her sister.
- To go find the fucking Avatar.- Lin snapped, clearly still angry. - I'll radio you if I find anything.- she told Tonraq and Zuko.
- Can I come with you?- Wei piped up.
- Absolutely not. You - his mother spoke sharply. - and your brother are grounded.-
- Mom! I can...-
- You can eat your breakfast. - she cut him off and he sulked, like a child.

Lord Zuko chuckled.

Lin had tracked Korra's jeep to Misty Palms Oasis, but no one of Team Avatar was there. Wei couldn't help but worry about them. He couldn't help but worry about Bolin.

Lin, Tonraq and lord Zuko stayed in Misty Palms Oasis, occasionally patrolling the area on the lookout for Team Avatar. They reported that Bolin and Mako were seen getting captured by Ming-Hua and Ghazan, the waterbender and the lavabender. When his mother told him the news, Wei felt the colour drain from his face and he had to sit down. He once again begged her to let him help in the search, but she once again declined. She sat with him and held him in her arms like she had back when he'd been a tantrum-throwing toddler.

Wei spent his time as he did before that fateful day when he first met Bolin, though every evening, he would practice alone in the dance studio and take more combat training in the mornings. He longed to go help in the search for Korra, but despite his pleas, his mother still insisted on him and Wing being confined to the estate. Wei felt like a caged animal. Who knows what those criminals were doing to Bolin and Mako at that very moment? A couple times he even tried to leave on his own, only to be caught and reprimanded by Kuvira.

Two days passed in restless unease for the Beifong family and their associates.
Then the news hit and swept through the world like a wildfire. Queen Hou-Ting was dead, assassinated in her own throne room. Ba Sing Se descended into chaos, which quickly spread through the Earth Kingdom as if it were an infection.

Literally the next day, Lin radioed in that Korra and Asami had made their way back to the Oasis, having gained some insight into their enemies. Apparently they called themselves the Red Lotus and they were an anarchist group, for some reason hellbent on ridding the world of the Avatar. However, to Wei's dismay she had no information about Bolin and Mako's whereabouts.

Two more stress filled days passed and the Beifong estate received another message, which his mother relayed in a shaking voice. Bolin and Mako were safe. Wei sighed, relieved, but Su's next words would freeze his blood.

- Zaheer's next target is the Northern Air Temple. He says if Korra doesn't surrender herself to him, he will wipe the airbenders out.-

The estate was abuzz with frantic movement, like a beehive someone had hit with a stick. Baatar Jr had confiscated what seemed like every radio in the city, trying to contact the Air Temple. With him sat Huan, nervously bouncing his legs, both of them desperately waiting for an answer. Suyin and Kuvira were rallying a security detail to take with them and fight if it were to come to that. Baatar Sr was trying to manage the sudden influx of refugees, hailing from some already bandit infested village.

It was in this atmosphere, in the static of radios and the clanking of armour, that the twins were expected to await the arrival of the airship bearing team Avatar. The only thing keeping, no, firmly holding Wei to the ground was the promise of seeing Bolin again.

The airship in the distance grew and so did the anticipation. Lord Zuko on his dragon reached the docking area first. He gave the twins a quick nod as he dismounted.
The airship docked.

As soon as the ramp lowered, Wei almost ran onto the airship, hurriedly followed by Wing. They immediately were greeted by Korra, Asami, Tonraq and Lin.

-Did you have any luck getting through to Tenzin?- Korra asked.
-No one's answering.- Wei answered, not bothering to hide his worry.
Beside him, Wing fretted. -What if Zaheer's already up there?-

In a rare moment of compassion, Lin came to comfort her nephews, gently squeezing Wing's shoulder. - It's going to be okay, kid.- she said softly -Now, we need to speak to Su. Where is she?-
- In the radio room, her and Junior are trying to contact the temple.-
- Great.- Korra smiled tightly, clapping the twins on the shoulder, before yelling. - Bolin! Mako! We're going to the radio room!-

Wei felt his heart flutter as he scanned the surprisingly crowded airship for those emerald eyes and that cute upturned nose.
- Wei! - a familiar, joyful voice called and suddenly he found himself literally engulfed in Bolin's arms.

- Grandma! This is Wei.- Bolin introduced Wei to a little old lady. The Beifong remembered the tale of how the brothers found their long lost family. Bolin continued, now putting an arm around both the twins. - And this is Wing.-
- It's lovely to meet you.- Wei smiled and shook the woman's hand.
- Likewise.- she smiled good-naturedly and turned to her grandsons. - It's so nice to meet your friends.-
Swept up in the joy of being reunited with Bolin, Wei almost forgot the crushing weight of worry for Opal. Almost. - Let's head to the radio room. Mom's probably waiting. -

Wing nodded and led the way. Wei couldn't bring himself to untangle from Bolin's embrace, and the other also seemed reluctant. The two lagged behind the group, Bolin's arm still around Wei's shoulders, as the former spoke of how he and Mako battled the Red Lotus, their capture and subsequent imprisonment in Ba Sing Se. But despite the solace Bolin's presence gave, Wei couldn't help but worry for his sister. His thoughts grew distant, full of burning temples, suffocated nomads and other worst case scenarios. He was ripped from his thoughs as Bolin's voice said his name, only to once again get lost, this time in the earthbender's brilliant, verdant eyes.

- Wei? Are you ok?- Bolin had stopped them, scanning the shorter boy's face. - You spaced out.-
- I'm fine, just worried. We haven't heard from Opal in days and I... - he swallowed, shoulders slumping. -It's been getting to the entire family.-
Bolin firmly, but gently embraced Wei. - It'll be alright.- he ardently whispered into the other's ear. - Opal will be fine. She's strong and awesome and smart. And she has Tenzin and the other airbenders. And soon, we're going up to help them.-
- Thank you.- Wei hoped Bolin didn't notice how his voice shook.- I just hope you're right.- he sighed, a wetness on his eyelashes. -We'd best get going.-

When they reached the radio room, they heard Baatar Jr's voice. -We have a strong signal, but no one's answering.-
Korra stood and began pacing - I can't just sit around here while a madman is on his way to the Northern Air Temple.- she grit her teeth -We have to do something.-
-I'll ready my airship.- Su proposed, heading for the door-With a full force of the Metal Clan security backing us, we can take them.-
-We'll never make it up there before Zaheer.- Mako spoke, and unfortunately Wei was inclined to agree. Bolin squeezed his shoulder.

Korra groaned, scowling at nothingness. -There might be another way to stop him.- she raised her head, determined -It's a long shot, but Zaheer is always meditating into the Spirit World. And I know exactly where he goes: Xai Bau's Grove. If I can find him there, maybe I could somehow trap him.-
Lin shook her head-We can't protect you in there. I don't like it.-
-I'll be fine.- Korra assured, determined. -I have to try.-
-I'll watch over her as she meditates.- Asami gently said and the girls left, hands linked.
Bolin cleared his throat. -I guess, in the meantime,- he decided - the rest of us will stay here and try to get through to the temple.-
- Some of us should help prep the airship.- Wei frowned, and as Bolin turned his head to look at him, he explained. - The sooner it's ready, the sooner we can head to the temple.-

-Alright, Mako and Bolin you keep trying the radio.- Tonraq decided - And the rest of us will help Su ready the airship.-
-I'm going to take a nap.- declared Mako and Bolin's grandmother.

An hour of running around, gathering troops, carrying messages or supplies later, the twins had a moment of rest alongside their mother, which quickly turned into an argument.

- You are not going and that is final!- Su's voice rose. - I can't let you two put yourselves at risk.-
- No!- Wei screamed - Opal is in danger!-
- We need to help her!- Wing backed up his brother. -Please mom!
- Boys, please.- their mother spoke sternly - I think you have been in enough threatening situations in the last couple days.-
- Our sister is in a threatening situation!- Wing shrilled, hands balled into tight fists and shaking all over.
- Please, you could lift the grounding.- Wei pleaded, ears ringing.
- Sweetie, this is not about being grounded.- Su gently took her sons by the hands. - Opal is already in danger. Kuvira soon will be, along with many of our soldiers. I can't stand the idea of anyone else, let alone my sons in the same position. You've already put your lives on the line enough over the last few days.- She pulled the twins into her arms, voice barely above whisper. - Please. Stay here, with your father and brothers. -

- Mom...- Wing whispered, clinging to her.
- Fine.- Wei sighed, cracking easily, as he usually did for his mother. - We'll hold down the fort while you and Kuvira are gone. -
- Oh, my boys..- Su was almost in tears - Thank you...-

The door opened and Huan rushed in, hair wild and robes messed up. - We've managed to contact the Air Temple. -

The first thing Wei heard was Bolin's frustrated voice. -I told you, it's Bolin!-
A child's voice answered -Bolin's not here right now.- the kids's playfulness was a good sign. -Can I take a message?

-No! I'm not looking for Bolin, I am Bolin!- Wei couldn't help but chuckle. Bolin turned and mouthed 'Help me', before giving into his frustration. - Gah, look, I need you to find your dad.-
-He's outside with the bison.- the child mumbled.- Did you know we found a whole herd full of baby bison?-
-No, a whole herd?- Bolin gasped. Spirits, he was cute.-Really?- Wei decided to be the responsible one.
-Bolin, focus.-

Korra stormed into the room, shoving Bolin to the side so hard he knocked into Wei. The Avatar grabbed the microphone and began sternly -Meelo, this is your commanding officer.- she spoke firmly, clearly having experience with children. -Go get your dad, now!-
The child answered quickly -Yes, sir!-there was scrambling and then silence for an impossibly tense moment.

-Hello? This is Tenzin.- Relief flooded the room, and Wei exhaled, clutching Bolin's shoulder.
-Tenzin! Listen to me carefully.- Korra urged, clutching the microphone- Zaheer is on his way to the temple. He's coming for the airbenders. You have to get everyone out of there immediately.- her knuckles whitened as she gripped the microphone. -Drop everything. Leave! Now!

-Oh, no.- Tenzin muttered. Wei's heart dropped, Bolin's hand found his.
-What?- fear crept into Korra's voice- What is it? Tenzin! Tenzin, what's happening?!
-It's too late.- the man on the other line whispered in horror -He's here.-

-What is it, Daddy?- The child asked. Tenzin answered slowly, in a tightly voice.
-We need to get everyone out of here. Stay close to me.-

Those were the last words they heard as the radio went silent. None of them dared say anything.
Korra sat, uncharacteristically still, staring at the speaker. Wei gripped Bolin's hand like it was the last thing tethering him to earth. Su leant against the wall, eyes widened in horror. Wing just stood there, bottom lip quivering, behind him Huan, pale as if sick. Baatar Jr rushed to press buttons and flip switches. The radio crackled to life for a moment, only for an explosion to ring out. Silence engulfed the room once again.

- Alright. That's it.- Korra stood so fast the chair fell backwards. - We're going to the temple. Is the airship ready, Su?-
- Yes..- his mother said, as if she were awakening from a dream.- Yes. We will depart soon.- she looked at her sons.
Wei forced a weak smile to his lips. - Don't worry, mom, we'll make sure the place doesn't fall apart while you're gone.- Suyin smiled back, gratefully and quickly walked out of the room, followed by everyone else, until only Wei and Bolin remained.

- Are you really OK?- Bolin gently asked. Wei felt as if a rope was tightening around his throat. The image of Opal, dead, was once again at the forefront of his mind. - Wei?- As usual, Bolin's voice brought some comfort.
- I'm fine.- Wei managed to croak out. Bolin frowned, gripping his hands tightly
-No, you're not. Listen, it's normal that you're worried about Opal. You don't have to hide it. I would feel the same if Mako was in her situation. -

- Alright. - sighed Wei. - I'm worried. So, so very worried about Opal. And I wish I could go with you, but I think the very idea would kill my mother. But I can't help feeling so... so helpless. My sister could already be dead, for all I know.- he felt tears trickling down his face. Bolin listened patiently and then held him as he sobbed.

- Wei, I promise, I won't let anything happen to Opal. - Bolin whispered and Wei believed him, but then fear gripped his heart from another angle.
- Can you promise me that nothing will happen to you?- he asked, looking into the other's eyes, searching for something, but he wasn't sure what for exactly. Bolin seemed taken aback by the request.
- Well, I'll do my best to not die.- he said, cheeks red for some reason. -Just for you.- he added with a wink. Wei chuckled, making Bolin crack a triumphant smile..

- Bo, come on, it's time to... Am I interrupting something? - Mako asked, walking into the room with a curious expression. Wei felt like he needed to explain himself for some bizarre reason.
- Oh, no. Um, I was just worried for Opal and Bolin was helping me calm down.-
Mako's expression softened, understanding taking the place of suspiciousness. - It's going to be alright. We'll get them back.- he spoke firmly.

The three of them walked to the airship in tense silence. Somehow Wei's hand found it's way back into Bolin's. Neither of them said anything about that.

At the docking area, the Beifong family said their goodbyes. Suyin hugged each of her sons separately and kissed Baatar Sr on the cheek. Baatar Jr and Kuvira spoke quietly. Even Lin got pulled into a hug by the twins. She complained, but smiled and hugged back when she thought no one was looking.
As the last supplies were being loaded, Bolin and Wei hugged goodbye, both wishing the other would say something more.
But neither did.
- Good luck.-
- Thanks. I promise I'll be back with Opal.-

The airship disappeared from view and the twins still stood at the docks, until their father dragged them back to the estate.

The hours felt like days and the days felt like months. The Beifong family busied themselves as they could. Huan locked himself in his room, shaping countless jagged, cracked statues. The twins threw themselves into caring for the many refugees from the anarchy-stricken Earth Kingdom villages. Both Baatars fixated on a new housing project. All of them ate dinner in their own rooms.

Wei would take time out of his day to visit Bolin and Mako's family in the guest house they were temporarily staying in. The seemed like a lively and kind bunch, much like Bolin himself. Wei made it his own personal task to make sure they had all they needed. He would sometimes stay for tea, at grandma Yin's behest. On those occasions he would get to know the family. He awed the younger kids with metalbending. He listened to Yin's stories of her family. He bantered with Tu.

- Do you really think they'll be ok?- Tu asked one evening. - I mean, Bolin can't even bend metal! - he added. Of course he was only worried, but Wei felt inexplicably defensive.
- Bolin's an amazing earthbender, even without metalbending! - he protested- he could probably kick both our asses.-
Tu laughed -You really like him, huh?-
- What's not to like? He's... a good friend. -
- A good friend?- Tu questioned again, arching an eyebrow. Fuck. Wei felt heat rise to his cheeks. - Don't worry. I don't judge.- the ex fruit venor assured. Thank Spirits.

Refugees still flooded into Zaofu, longing for stability and safety the metal walls could provide. The situation in the rest of the Earth Kingdom quickly worsened. Singular states would war between each other, bandits became more and more cocky. A group of them even tried to attack Zaofu, but even with the city guard not at its full potential, they were quickly either captured or repelled. The twins took a role as de facto leaders of the guard, taking turns in organising patrols and the like. Most of the soldiers couldn't tell them apart anyways.

Four days passed, their only link to the airship being infrequent and short reports from Kuvira.
On the fith day, the day Korra was to be exchanged for the airbenders, Kuvira radioed in.

- Zaheer tricked us. He took the Avatar and the airbenders are still in his custody.-
- What?!- Wing exclaimed, while Wei's entire body turned into one big icicle.
- I just told you what.- Kuvira sighed -We managed to recover master Tenzin. He, Team Avatar, Su, Lin and Chief Tonraq are on Zaheer's trail.-
- Why aren't you with them?- Baatar Sr asked carefully. Kuvira audibly groaned.
- Believe me, I wish I could be there. Plenty of us were wounded in the fight.-

Wei couldn't listen anymore. He rushed out of the room. His feet took him to the dance studio. He sat on the floor for a long time, untill Wing found him. Then they sat together and worried, until Baatar Jr found them and forced them to go to bed.

The next day the long anticipated message came. Opal was safe. The airbenders were safe. Their family was safe. Bolin was safe.
But every coin has two sides and everything has a price. Korra was the one to pay that price. The extent of her injuries was yet to be seen, but she was in poor condition.
Team Avatar was headed to Republic City, and that would also be where Bolin and Mako's family would be starting a new life. A young airbender was to go through some sort of ceremony and Opal had to be there. But right after that, Suyin promised, she would be right back, and she would bring Opal with her for some time.

-It's today! It's today!- Wing woke his twin up, with the excitement of a child on the day of a festival. Wei couldn't help but be infected by his joy. Today was the day their family would finally be reunited.

The two dressed and quickly ran to get breakfast. The family ate in content silence. Baatar Jr and Sr spoke quietly about their newest project. Huan was busy shaping a piece of scrap metal into a smooth, arched little statuette, and barely touched his food. The twins played footsie under the table.

They were truly happy, for the first time in a couple weeks.

The airship docked and the ramp lowered. Down it dashed a yellow and orange silhouette. Opal crashed into her brothers and all of them fell to the ground, laughing . Well, exept Huan, but he still smiled when Opal wrapped her arms around him.
- Welcome home, dear.- whispered Baatar Sr, embracing his daughter. Wei thought he saw a tear in his eye.

Suyin sped down the ramp and joined in on the boisterous greetings. She laughed, showering her sons with kisses. - Oh, I've missed you boys so much!- she exclaimed, pulling a reluctant Huan into her arms.
- We've missed you too, mom.- Wing rushed into her arms, effectively trapping Huan between them, as the artist groaned.

- Hey, where's our guest? - Opal asked and Suyin chuckled.
- Last I saw, your guest was saying his goodbyes to the crew.- Wei looked at Opal curiously.
- Guest?-
She blushed, and giggled.- Oh, someone I know...- she brushed a lock of hair behind her ear.

- Ummm, hi everyone!- a familiar voice spoke from the top of the ramp.
- Bolin!- Wei laughed, and suddenly he was light as a cloud.
- Wei!- Bolin rushed down the ramp, wrapping his arms around him. Pabu looked down from his master's shoulder, chirping a little. - It's so good to see you again! -
- It's good to see you, too!- Really, the way Bolin made Wei's heart flutter just had to be supernatural.

- I invited Bolin over for a bit of a vacation!- Opal smiled brightly.
Bolin hugged Wei tighter. - Isn't it great! We can all hang out! Together!-
- Yeah, awesome!- Wei laughed, heart pounding.

-Isn't it great!- Wing teased, once the two of them got back to their room. - This is your big chance!-
- My big chance?- Wei snorted, he'd had to endure a lot of playful ribbing from his twin ever since they had first met Bolin. It had definitely gotten more intense since Wing had caught Wei climbing back into the house after the 'late night rendezvous'.

- Your chance to confess to Bolin! -Wing laughed, as if he were stating the obvious.
- Ah, so you've finally made the descent from detective novels down to romance flicks- Wei grumbled, rolling his eyes.
- Oh, shut it!- Wing gave him a little push with a giggle. - Reject all my great love advice and end up old, bitter and alone!-

- Bitter and alone?- Wei muttered disbelievingly, flipping through one of his brother's aforementioned romance flicks, filled of illustrations of couples kissing and embracing. The images had a bizzare flush crawling up the back of his neck.
- All, I'm saying is that you'll never have a better chance to confess.-
Wei scoffed.

Of course, as usual, Wing's words stuck with him. Though he would rather die than admit it.

The four of them, Bolin, Opal and the twins, had been spending a plesant time in the gardens. Their older sister was showing off all that she had learned at the Temple. She insisted, modest as she was, that she still wasn't very good, but her brothers were still blown away (with exitement). When she got tired, Bolin grabbed Wei's wrist and dragged him to a clearing.

- Wei, look what I can do!- Bolin laughed, emerald eyes ablaze with exitement. He held his hands out, and, to Wei's surprise, the ground cracked and opened. Lava poured out and the Beifong almost fell backwards in surprise.

- What!- Wei gasped, looking at Bolin in bewilderment. The other laughed.
- I learnt it when we were at the Northern Air Temple! - Bolin explained, giggling. Wei grabbed his hands.
- You have to teach me!-
- Sure.- Bolin smirked, his nose scrunching up adorably. -Right after you teach me metalbending! -

- Hey, whenever you're in the mood for one of my incompetent metalbending lessons.- Wei offered. To be fair, the prospect of spending one on one time with Bolin was even more enticing than a chance to learn lavabending. He realised that they were still holding hands, and he didn't have the strength to drop them.

- Are you serious? I would love to. - Bolin smiled, exitedly. - But, Spirits, I'm tired of fighting. If I ever do learn metalbending I'd love to just play power disc with you guys. Or...- he trailed off and looked away, cheeks pinking.

- Or...?- Wei repeated, eyeing the lavabender with curiosity. Bolin blushed even more.
- Never mind, it's stupid. -
- Oh, come on.- Wei squeezed Bolin's hands encouragingly.
- Well, I was thinking... if I ever learn metalbending I'd love to learn to dance, like you and Wing do.- Bolin softly spoke, looking at the ground.- I mean, I know that it's gotta take years to get that good...-

Wei's heart fluttered around his ribcage like a wild bird.

- Bolin, I would love to teach you to dance.- he almost whispered, and Bolin looked at him, wide-eyed.
- Really? - Bolin breathed, gripping Wei's hands tightly.
- Really!- Wei answered equally as quiet. - You know, you don't really need to metalbend to dance. Do you want to try?-

Sunbeams filtered through the windows of the dance studio. Wei led Bolin in there with a smile, before he realised he really had no idea how to teach dancing.

- I didn't really ask, what do you even want to learn?-
- Uuuuh.- Bolin hesitated and rubbed the back of his neck. - I wasn't sure, actually. I, ah, don't know the first thing about dancing.-

The two of them stood there awkwardly for a moment. Wei racked his brain for how his mother had taught him. - The way Wing and I learnt to dance was just by watching and copying our mom during her practices. But I don't think that that'd be very fun for you.-

- Well, to be fair, you're incredible to watch when you dance.- Bolin joked. He had to be joking. He had to, but the breath still caught in Wei's throat and his face burned.
- Oh, I, uh, still...- The thoughts stuck to his tongue like honey. - I still think you should practice with me.-
- Oh, fine.- The lavabender laughed.

- I'll lead you through some poses.- Wei gently said, taking the other's hands and aranging them in a couple positions. Bolin was stiff, stubbornly staring over his teacher's shoulder. Wei couldn't help but notice him holding his breath. - Hey, are you ok?-

Bolin jumped so hard that he fell back, slipping out of Wei's hands. He awkwardly chuckled. - Yeah, I just...- he started carefully and Wei thought he was going to chew him out for being a terrible teacher. - It's just that this is so nice.- Well, that was unexpected. Wei slowly nodded, beckoning Bolin to continue. - I guess I kinda haven't had time to relax in a while. First with the Equalists and soon after that there was Vaatu. And almost since then we've been searching for airbenders.-

Wei didn't know what to say, so he just offered Bolin a small smile. The other sighed and plopped down on the ground. He looked tired, not as vibrant as he usually was. Wei gently sat next to him and Bolin rested his head on his shoulder.
- Do you want to talk about it?- Wei tentatively asked, subconsciously carding his fingers through Bolin's soft raven hair.

- Maybe. I kinda feel bad for feeling so tired.- Bolin mumbled into Wei's shoulder. - It's just that Korra has it so much worse...- he almost whispered that last part, pain evident in his voice. - Maybe if I had discovered I could lavabend earlier, she wouldn't have been captured and she would still be...-

Wei had heard short reports of Korra's condition. He knew she would need months or even years of rehabilitation to just walk again, nevermind bending and combat. But, from his mother and Kuvira's accounts of that day, Wei knew that her situation was far from Bolin's fault.

- Hey, it's not your fault.- Wei assured, fervently. - Zaheer tricked you all. It was all a trap, rigged to kill you, your brother and Asami. And you saved them. You literally did the impossible, just like my grandmother. You're really amazing.-
- You really think so?- Bolin gasped, raising his head to face Wei. The metalbender nodded.

- Yes. I really, truly think that you're one of the most incredible benders I've ever met.- he spoke from the heart. - And I think you definitely deserve some down time after all the shit you've been through.- Bolin laughed and wiped the corner of his eye.
- Thanks.- he smiled a small smile and Wei felt like he had accomplished something great. - I really needed that.-

He rested his head back on Wei's shoulder, who put an arm around him. They sat in comfortable silence, Pabu curled up in Bolin's lap. It was damn near perfect.

'You could confess, right now. Tell him how you feel about him. Tell him you love him' a voice whispered in Wei's head. He ignored it.

- I think I know what dance I want to learn.- Bolin suddenly said, perking up. - I want to learn a dance for couples. You know, how they dance at parties in Republic City. I've been to a few, with Asami or Varrick. -

- Ah, ballroom dances.- Wei laughed, but his heart felt strange, almost fragile and quivering. -Kuvira tried to teach us how, but failed. Miserably. -
Kuvira, as part of Su's dance troupe had been practicing ballroom dancing for a show or another. Opal and the twins saw the opportunity to be goofy and badgered her into showing them how. Somehow along the way, Huan and Baatar Jr had gotten dragged into the fray. He snorted, remembering his adopted sister's seething look after Bataar Jr had stepped on all her toes.

- Still, we can try..- Bolin tried to convince him. Wei really should try to learn to say no to him. He searched his memory for Kuvira's lacklustre lessons.

- Alright.- they both stood up.- So, you'll want to put your hand on your partner's waist.- Bolin gripped Wei's waist like it was the last thing holding him upright. -Okay, you're holding too tight now. Loosen up a little. We're having fun. We're at a party.-

Bolin bit his lip, relaxing his tight hold on Wei's waist. Spirits above, the poor Beifong thought, before scolding himself internally. He really shouldn't overthink simple things like that.
- And I'll put my hand on your shoulder.- Wei tried to speak casually, sweat trickling down the back of his neck.
- And then we hold hands, right?- Bolin asked, smiling nervously. - I know that part.-
- Yep, we hold hands, like this.- Wei explained, entwining their fingers.
There they stood, face to face, emerald eyes meeting moss green. Both smiling and inexplicably out of breath.

- And now?- Bolin asked, smiling down at the slightly shorter boy. Oh, right, they were doing something.
- And now, we sway a little. Here, like this.-
The two of them rocked from side to side, gently holding each other. It was comfortable, soft and warm.

- Ok, now I take a step backwards with my right foot and you step forward with your left.- at least they managed the first step. - Now, your right foot, here- Wei tapped the spot with his foot. - You're doing great, now put your left next to your right foot. Good. And now we repeat that, but backwards. -

They stumbled through the steps and Bolin laughed as they completed the box.
- That was... surprisingly easy.- he smiled, squeezing Wei's hand. - I guess it looks way harder than it actually is.-
- Well, there are different variants of the dance, but yeah, these are the basics. Sometimes there are twirls and other stuff like that.-

- Twirls?- Bolin laughed, eyes sparling with exitement. - Can I twirl you?- he asked, with childlike wonder. Spirits, he was adorable.
- Oh, alright. - Wei chuckled, buckling easily.- Here, lift your arm like this and then I twirl under it.-

He did just that. An little part of him, embarrassingly, swooned, feeling like a princess in one of Opal's childhood fairytale books. He scolded himself once more for such flights of fancy. Meanwhile, Bolin was positively beaming. He held Wei close and they continued waltzing for a while.

- Can you twirl me?- Bolin suddenly asked, hopefully eyeing his dance partner. And there he was again, impossible to refuse as usual.
- Sure. I'll lift my arm and you spin under it.- And Bolin did just that, twirling with gusto. The lavabender, lost in his exitement, managed to somehow stumble and topple them both over.

He landed relatively softly on Bolin's chest and got a facefull of the soft material of his shirt.
- Oh, sorry.- Bolin mumbled sheepishly -Guess I got ahead of myself, you ok?- he put a hand to Wei's cheek, carefully tilting his head upwards. The metalbender's heart fluttered, suddenly very aware of the warmth spreading across his cheeks.

- Our trainings really need to stop ending like this.- Wei laughed, hoping Bolin didn't notice the redness of his face. The lavabender huffed a laugh, but those soft, emerald eyes lingered on the other's face, and a smile tugged at his lips.

' You could confess ' the voice in the back of his head was back, but Wei was frozen, fingers subconsciously gripping the soft shirt. He held Bolin's gaze, getting lost in the forest of his eyes. For a moment they seemed to lean towards each other.

- Okay!- Bolin exclaimed loudly, startling Wei into hurriedly backing up. - I think I've got a grip of ballroom dancing. -
- Yeah, just don't trip over your feet.- Wei teased, standing and helping Bolin up.
'What were you expecting?' A bitter part of him hissed 'Did you really think something could happen between you?'.

He shook his head, hoping to rid himself of those treacherous thoughts. Bolin's hand was still warm in his and the lavabender was smiling sweetly, blissfully oblivious to the internal torment he caused Wei.

- Hey, I'm really grateful for this. I have so much fun with you!-Bolin laughed, the sound dazzling. - I'm sorry to run off, but I need to speak to Opal. You'll be ok?- he asked hurriedly.
Wei snorted, rolling his eyes. - Bolin, I've lived here my entire life, I think I'll be fine. Go, have fun!-

As Bolin disappeared out the door, leaving Wei alone in the studio, his smile fell.' You idiot', he scolded himself and focused on aimlessly, needlessly rearranging random props in the back of the room. ' You can't even confess to the boy you like. Coward.'

He walked out the door and sighed, enjoying the cool draft blowing through the corridor. And saw something that completely surprised him, but actually made quite a lot of sense. Opal, her arms wrapped around Bolin's neck, the two of them kissing. Wei really should have known, he thought, a guilty pang in his heart.

For a second or two, Wei wondered if he should say something or mabye just sneak off and pretend he saw nothing. The decision was made for him when Opal noticed her brother's presence. She practically jumped away from Bolin. - Wei! I, uh, didn't see you there! We were just... uh- she made an honestly pathetic attempt to try and explain. Beside her, Bolin looked quite embarrassed, yet so, so happy. Wei swallowed and forced himself to smile. Opal would probably feel even worse if she knew about her little brother's feelings for her new boyfriend.

- Opal, it's okay. - Wei tried to cut his still stuttering sister off as gently as he could.
-We were going to tell the family, I swear!- Opal kept talking, wringing her hands. - I just wanted to...- she awkwardly trailed off. In any other situation Wei would feel like laughing. This time he was closer to crying, but he did his best to hide that.

- Opal, I said it's ok!- Wei assured, hoping they wouldn't notice the tightness in his throat. Opal looked at him hopefully.
- Really?- she asked quietly.
- Yeah, I won't even tell Wing.- he answered and in a flash of orange and yellow, she had run up to him and flung her arms around him.

- Thankyouthankyou!- Opal squealed, squeezing the life out of her brother. Wei returned the hug, burying his face in the soft fabric of her nomad outfit. This was what mattered most. His family, his sister, happy.

- We really were planning on telling you guys at dinner.- Bolin said, laying a gentle, big hand on Opal's shoulder, as she nodded firmly. Wei felt disgustingly weak.

- How... how long have you two been together?- he tried to sound casual, strangling the waver out of his voice. Pabu climbed up his legs and onto his shoulders, settling with a small chirp. Bolin reached over to pet the fire ferret, his hand brushing against Wei's hair. They both froze and Bolin quickly withdrew his hand. Opal didn't seem to notice, thoughts occupied by plesant memories.

- Since Jinora's ceremony. Bolin and I spoke afterwards and decided to give this, - she squeezed Bolin's hand. - us, a try. Bolin's told Mako and I think mom suspects something, but other than them you're the first to know.-

- I'm glad for you both.- Wei didn't lie as he hugged Opal again. Both of them deserved good things in their lives and they clearly made each other happy. And how he himself felt had no right to interfere with that. He still felt sick, knees almost buckling, stomach churning. On his shoulder, Pabu squeaked, rubbing his head aginst Wei's cheek, demanding affection. Wei scratched the ferret behind the ears.

- Are you ok? You look a little ill.- Bolin asked, frowning worriedly. Wei's mind scrambled to excuse himself, aching heart in his throat.
- I'm feeling a little bit tired.- he answered quickly and decided to change the subject. - What was that ceremony like, anyway?-

- Oh, it was awesome, Jinora deserves her tattoos, really...- Opal went on to fondly talk about the friends she'd made at the Air Temple, as the three of them walked back to the estate. Bolin asked about Kai, the little boy he adopted as a brother. Opal recounted the how she had caught him sneaking out on an apparent date with Jinora. Bolin laughed heartily and even Wei chuckled, despite not knowing the context.
Wei did his best to ignore Bolin and Opal's linked hands as they walked.

When they reached the living quarters of the estate, Wei excused himself and headed towards his room. He opened the door quietly, hoping for just a bit of peace. No such luck. Wing lay sprawled out on his bed, nose buried in some book or another. He lifted his head and gave that shit-eating grin Wei knew so well. - Hey! You and Bolin completely ditched us! Where were you? Did you, ya know? Confess? - Wing waggled his eyebrows playfully and normally Wei would be obliged to banter. This time he just shook his head and sat on his bed.

Wing, sensing his twin's bad mood, moved to sit next to him. - Is everything ok? Did he do something? - he asked worriedly. Despite Wei shaking his head again, he continued, scowling fiercely. - Because if he did something...-

Wei cut his brother off. - No, Wing, it's ok. Bolin didn't do anything. He wouldn't.-
Wing furrowed his eyebrows, carefully looking his twin up and down. - Then why are you so upset? - For a moment Wei was inclined to tell Wing everything. To vent, to cry. But, he had promised Opal, so he just turned his head. He felt tired, heavy. He wanted to cry. - Fine. Keep your secrets. You know I'll find out. - Wing tried one last time to get his twin to smile. He sighed at the lack of reaction. - Maybe you should get some sleep before dinner. You look exhausted.-

Wei obliged, curling up on his bed and falling into a deep sleep. He dreamt of emeralds and forests and wind.

Dinner was a joyful affair. The whole family, plus Bolin sat together, happily chatting away. The only people who didn't contribute much to the conversation were Wei and Huan, albeit for different reasons. Bolin had been seated between Wei and Opal. Wing, who sat on his twin's other side, eyed him worriedly every now and then

As dessert was served, Opal asked everyone for attention. She stood up and the family listened intently. Bolin held her hand. Ah, so it was time for that announcement. Wei tried to give his sister an encouraging smile.

- I, uh, have an announcement to make.- Opal started carefully. - I'm dating someone. It's Bolin.- she finished quickly.

As Wei expected, no one was especially against the relationship. Huan did say he thought Opal could do better, so Wei kicked him under the table. Other than that, the couple was congratulated and Bolin was welcomed into the family. Baatar Jr tried to do the whole 'if you hurt my little sister I'll hurt you' thing, but he looked like a stickman compared to Bolin and appeared more comical than threatening. Bolin, to his credit, very seriously declared that his intentions with Opal were as loving and respectful as possible.

And as Opal and Bolin jovially talked to the family, surrounded by joy and laughter, Wei could, for a moment at least, trick himself into thinking that he was also happy. He did his best to avoid Wing's sympathetic gaze.
It made him remember there was a hole in his chest.

In time he would numb to that pain. That night, though, he cried silently in his bed, tears sinking into the sheets as he muffled pathetic, traitorous sobs into his pillow.
