The Legacies' Triad

It had been a strange thing to 'bond' over (and that was before he got into the question of how self-aware this A.I. actually was), but while Peter had been sitting on the roof of the truck, he had rather enjoyed the chance to talk with Susan while going through the various webbing types built into the suit. There had been a few he decided to wait to test for when he was in a more contained area and could better appreciate the effects, but he was definitely impressed with what he could check out so far. The splitter web had possibilities if he was up against multiple opponents, the web grenade seemed to make a dramatic impression when he tossed it against a couple of trees…

He recognised that Susan was just an artificial intelligence, and he wasn't sure exactly how sentient she was, but it had been nice to have someone to talk to about his actions as Spider-Man in the field, even if they'd spent that time going over webbing details rather than anything personal. A part of him had wanted to talk about his feelings for the girls in his life, just to have someone to talk about it with, but when even he didn't know how to define how he felt about Kate and Yelena right now, actually saying anything out loud felt like he would just start talking and have no idea how he was going to finish it. He felt as though he could trust Susan not to say anything to Mr Stark or Mr Hogan, but at the same time…

His younger self would have been almost annoyed at how easily Liz had slipped from his thoughts, but even if she was still the most amazing girl at his school, after everything Yelena had done to help him improve as Spider-Man… after Kate had been one of the few people to really understand him even before everything in his life went crazy… he'd definitely realised that they were both attractive, but this felt like more than just liking the way they looked…

It had almost been a shame when Susan reported that they were approaching the Damage Control Deep Storage Vault, forcing Peter to jump off the truck and start swinging back towards the Decathlon, satisfied that the man in the wing-suit and his gang couldn't go after anything else in the convoy. With Susan helping him trace his route back, it was actually rather fun to go 'van-hopping' from Damage Control to the hotel. Sneaking back into his hotel room had been a bit of a challenge, but once he confirmed Liz and the others had left the pool, he hid on the roof to change back into his civilian clothes while bundling his costume up into his bag.

Sneaking into the room was actually an interesting opportunity to put some of the training he'd received from Yelena into practice, even if he'd 'cheated' a bit by using Susan to confirm that Ned was asleep before he opened the door. Still, once inside he was able to make his way back to his bed without waking Ned, hide his costume back in his bag, carefully change into his pyjamas under the covers, and then lie back to reward himself with a good night's sleep.

The bus ride back to New York was one of the best moments Peter had experienced as himself since Uncle Ben died. With the decathlon team high on their victory, followed by an enjoyable trip up the Washington Monument, the mood in the bus was excellent, with Peter enjoying the sense of camaraderie he felt with the old team. It didn't compare to what he'd felt so far back in New York in his current 'alliance' with Yelena and Kate, where they'd accomplished less but were doing something that made a greater difference, but it was nice to feel like part of a group for a change.

There had been a few awkward questions from Liz and Ned regarding what he'd been doing the previous night when he left his room and nobody knew where he'd gone, but when he'd managed to answer so many questions correctly everyone accepted his claim that he'd been studying somewhere else (Flash had just fumed in the corner, but that was Flash). He'd managed to take a look for his tracer's signal after their round had concluded, but the van didn't move for the whole of the trip. Peter had managed to sneak away to track the van down once the competition was over (fortunately Mr had believed him that he wanted to check on an acquaintance who lived nearby before joining them at the Washington Monument), but by the time he found the van it had clearly been abandoned and cleared out of anything useful. Peter wasn't sure if they'd guessed that he'd been tracking the van or just decided it had served its purpose, but either way that was another lead down.

On top of all that, Peter's good mood had taken a further knock when he'd been forced to experience a private revelation after overhearing a few of the girls playing 'F Marry Kill' when he heard Liz mention that she would go for Spider-Man in that scenario. He'd been briefly flattered at the image, but when he idly tried to think of what girls he would go for in that scenario, he'd swiftly realised that he couldn't do it. He could picture being OK with just a kiss from Liz (the idea of 'f-ing' her was another matter entirely but a kiss kept up the sentiment of the game), but killing Kate or Yelena was obviously never an option, and the idea of marrying one…

If it meant that he could only keep one of them in his life and would basically lose the other, Peter already knew that he couldn't choose. He was prepared for the idea that Yelena in particular might move on once her current mission was over, since she was in New York for a specific purpose and had no reason to stick around just because of a couple of kids, but the idea of definitely never seeing her again… or ending his friendship with Kate for good now that they had become so much closer…

Peter didn't know how Yelena in particular had become so important to him so quickly, but now that she and Kate knew his secret he wasn't prepared to give up either of them. He'd worry about the idea of Yelena moving on once she'd found the other Widow she was looking for when it happened, but once back in New York, he had to focus on the mission. He'd spent some time after getting back in New York dealing with a few immediate personal matters, such as taking a last look over a homework assignment, but once everything had been sorted out he'd made his way back to the safehouse. He'd been surprised when he walked in to find Kate and Yelena in the kitchen wearing tight-fighting workout gear, Kate's a deep purple while Yelena's was a more standard black even as both left their arms and the skin below their throats bare, but he was fairly sure he'd managed to get over his initial reaction to that unexpected sight without embarrassing himself.

He was allowed to acknowledge that his friends were beautiful women without it being too big a deal… right?

"Are you all right?" Yelena asked as she and Kate finished their latest stretches and turned to face Peter directly.

"Fine," Peter nodded at the older blonde before turning to the brunette. "How about you?"

"Working out, in every sense," Kate grinned as she stretched her arms and tilted her head back (Peter was not looking at her chest) before she faced him directly. "Yelena just thought a bit of exercise here would help make up for not getting out that much, what with Mom being away on business again… anyway, how were things in Washington?"

"It was… interesting," Peter decided after a moment's thought, suddenly wishing he'd put more thought into how he was going to tell the other two about what had happened. "The decathlon stuff went well, and I managed to intercept the wing-suit guy before he could get anything from the convoy thanks to a few new features in my suit."

"New features?" Kate looked curiously at him.

"Turns out when we shut down the tracker protocol we must have activated a few other systems in the suit," Peter explained, already decided that he wasn't going to reveal that there had been a 'Training Wheels' protocol included even if he was looking forward to seeing their reaction to this next bit of news. "That's actually how I found out about Susan."

"Susan?" Yelena and Kate repeated in confusion.

"Right here," Peter said, reaching into his bag to take out a gauntlet from the suit, which he put on his wrist before he tapped a button to display a projection of the suit's face and eyes on the nearest wall. "Susan, you're in the presence of Yelena Belova and Kate Bishop; do what we discussed."

"Affirmative," Susan responded, Peter choosing to consider her tone of voice as 'teasing' as a red light seemed to reflect back from the projected image to pass over the women in question.

"What-?" Kate started while Yelena simply looked at Peter in confusion.

"Scan complete," Susan spoke again. "Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova have been listed as secondary users."

"Secondary users?" Kate looked curiously at the smiling young man in front of them. "Of what?"

"Of the AI program Mr Stark added to the suit," Peter grinned. "I checked and she's programmed to keep my secrets unless something comes up that's an active threat to my life, so there's no reason for her to alert Mr Stark to the fact that I'm getting help hunting down arms dealers, and she definitely can't tell him who you are without my permission."

"What does it mean, 'secondary users'?" Yelena cut in, giving Peter a pointed stare.

"Basically you're able to ask Susan for help- once I sort out a suitable interface unit for you both- and she'll respond to most of your queries, although if we all ask for something at once pretty sure she'll prioritise me as her main user," Peter explained. "It's also dependent on me keeping her in sync with the main storage system in the suit, but that shouldn't be too hard."

"So… we have our own A.I.?" Kate looked at Peter with a growing grin. "Like how the Avengers used to have that… Jarvis thing?"

"Pretty much," Peter nodded.

"Cool!"

"And what will this 'Susan' help us do?" Yelena asked, raising an eyebrow as she folded her arms and looked at Peter.

"That's… OK, good point; I haven't worked that all out yet," Peter acknowledged with an awkward shrug. "If we don't know what we're looking for we can't exactly ask her to help us work it out… maybe we can just be glad we've got extra help and take it from there?"

"…Fair enough," Yelena conceded with a nod before she walked over to a fridge in the corner of the room, opening it and taking out two bottles of water, one of which she tossed to Kate while opening the other and taking a swig of it. "Did you find anything else?"

"Not much," Peter shook his head as he put the gauntlet back in his bag and walked over to sit down at the table. "I mean, even when we had the convoy's timing and the tracer's location, I couldn't leave the hotel room before Ned fell asleep, and by the time I got to the tracer's location there just wasn't time to listen to much before everything kicked off."

"You got there just before the bird-guy, huh?" Kate asked, as she swallowed what looked like half the water bottle in her hand.

"I managed to fight him off, but after that… well, I thought it would be better to stay with the convoy in case someone else came for it before it got to Damage Control," Peter explained, before he smiled at Yelena. "Although he did leave something behind I think you'll like."

Before Yelena could ask what that was, Peter took the object out of his pocket and tossed it towards the nearest appropriate wall. Just like when he'd tested it earlier, the object split into four mid-air and formed what could only be described as a purple rectangular hole in the wall, displaying the room on the other side.

"Whoa…" Kate stared in awe at the purple hole, walking over to put her hand on the now-transparent wall and then push her arm through it. "OK, maybe this came from a criminal, but this is seriously cool!"

"Well, if we've got the chance to get something cool, why not use it?" Peter grinned. "I'm not sure if this thing is going to run out of power or something at some point, but so long as we're careful…"

"I'm up for that," Kate gave him a thumbs-up before she turned to Yelena. "C'mon, we have to use this thing at some point, right?"

"I will keep it in mind," Yelena said, a slight smile on her face that left Peter unsure if she was approving of the idea or basically indulging their childish pleas (and why did it hurt to think of Yelena dismissing him and Kate as 'kids'?).

"Right then; how do you-?" Kate began as she ran her hand along the edge of the purple 'hole', only to make contact with one of the corners and cause the device to fall off the wall. Kate just managed to grab the device as it reassembled from four parts to one whole before it hit the floor, but she was left staring at it in renewed awe. "OK, this just got even cooler!"

Her eager grin faltered as she looked at the device in her hand. "And they're using all this to steal weapons?"

"That is a good use of their resources-"

"And I can get why they want more guns and power sources, but why would they do all this when they could just… break into a bank and grab the money in the vaults?" Kate said, frowning in thought. "I mean, I get that there isn't that much money in banks these days since everything went electronic, but there's still cash machines and that, right?"

"That is exactly why they would not do that," Yelena observed as she took the 'portable door' from Kate.

"Huh?"

"Stealing money is obvious, even if they are careful and use their technology to avoid detection," Yelena explained, studying the device with a thoughtful smile before she continued talking. "By choosing to focus on stealing rare technology that all parties believe is secure, they make it less likely that people will notice what they are doing until it is too late."

"Oh, so that's why the bird-guy was only taking a few items from those boxes," Peter snapped his fingers in understanding.

"What boxes?" Kate asked.

"Oh, when he was in that truck he just grabbed a few bits of tech from various boxes instead of taking whole boxes," Peter explained. "I thought he was just being picky, but he was probably making sure he didn't take anything too obvious."

"That would make sense," Yelena nodded. "A careful thief can take things in a manner that would ensure a casual inspection would not reveal that anything had been stolen."

"So… since this stuff's so rare not many people know about it, so long as he's taking care while stealing stuff basically nothing actually gets reported stolen?"

"Correct," Yelena nodded at Kate, before she looked back at Peter. "Do you have any further details regarding these men?"

"Not… really," Peter shook his head. "I thought about going after the tracer again after the Decathlon, but they'd abandoned the van I was tracking. I tried having Susan run the number, but it was reported stolen a while ago…"

"And what about the men in the van?"

Yelena wondered what it said about her that she was so tolerant of Peter and Kate's mistakes during this campaign. She appreciated that she was dealing with relative amateurs who couldn't always know what was important, but when she had spent her reunion with Natasha criticising details such as her 'pose' (and Yelena did not do that herself), it was easier to give the younger ones advice how to improve rather than just criticise them. Peter's eager desire to help people, on top of Kate having fun even when undergoing the kind of training that had basically made Yelena's life a nightmare when she was a child… criticising them in that state made Yelena feel like (according to a metaphor she'd read somewhere) she was kicking a puppy if she just spoke harshly to them.

Still, even if she wondered at herself for being so lenient towards them, Yelena had to admit that both were improving. She might have needed to suggest this particular approach to Peter, but once she'd offered the idea of him checking the men in the van for more information, she had been privately impressed when he spoke with 'Susan' (where had he come up with that particular name?) and the artificial intelligence was able to identify one of the criminals Peter had witnessed during an earlier deal from accessing criminal records based on what he had witnessed while wearing his suit. Kate had been particularly amused at Peter's embarrassed reaction to learning that this system was known as the 'Baby Monitor Protocol', but the system had managed to identify one of the men involved as Aaron Davis, a Queens resident with a criminal record.

In deference to Peter's request that she try and conceal her identity, as well as the white spy-suit she had become comfortable wearing in the field, she was wearing a set of night-vision goggles Natasha had left in the safehouse. Like many of the more advanced items there, these goggles seemed to have been developed by Tony Stark, as they included less conventional features such as automatically adjusting in response to any change in lighting so that the wearer wouldn't be blinded by sudden bright moments. She had also added a dark wig to wear over her blonde hair, which should be enough of a disguise to stop an apparent amateur recognising her later. She had assured Peter that she wouldn't do anything too drastic to this man while questioning him, but to quote a film she had found while browsing online once, it was surprising what people could live through if she had to take more extreme measures…

Even with that in mind, for the initial confrontation, she went with using Peter's own 'gift' to her and fired a single web-pellet at the target's hand as he opened the trunk of his car. From what Peter had told her and she had confirmed with a test of her own, the web should keep this man contained long enough for her to question him without causing any permanent damage, so beyond that this situation would unfold based on how he responded to her questions.

"Who the-?" Davis began in an indignant tone, before he turned and saw Yelena directly. "What the Hell?"

"You may call me 'White Widow'," Yelena said as she walked up towards her new target. "I am an associate of Spider-Man."

"Oh," Davis responded, eyes widening in apprehension as he looked at her. "White Widow? Is that… anything like Black Widow?"

"We had similar training." Yelena allowed herself a brief smile at seeing how Davis was clearly concerned to hear even that small admission. "Spider-Man informed me that you were involved in selling certain advanced weapons recently."

"Uh… I was just told where to go to get the stuff; I don't work with those guys full-time-"

"You have knowledge of where these buyers operate."

"I'm not part of the inner circle or anything-!"

"You know enough to make contact and take part in the deal that Spider-Man intercepted," Yelena cut Davis off, her hand hovering over her weapon even as she knew she wouldn't actually use it against a relatively minor criminal like this man. "Can you tell me anything further regarding the arms dealers?"

"…You're working on getting these weapons off the streets?" Davis said, looking cautiously at Yelena.

"That is our goal," Yelena nodded.

"I got a nephew in this neighbourhood," Davis said, a somewhat resigned tone to his voice. "I don't want these weapons getting out there where he could get caught in the crossfire."

"That is our goal," Yelena affirmed. She wondered how this man could justify criminal activities in the first place if he was concerned about his nephew, but her personal skills didn't extend far enough to know how to deal with such a situation.

"Well…" Davis looked thoughtfully at her for a moment before he sighed. "I don't know where these guys are based, but I know that this one guy I used to run with…"

"He is making plans to purchase weapons?"

"On the Staten Island Ferry in a couple of hours," Davis affirmed. "I don't know what he'll be after, but this guy… he was a different kind of crook."

"Dangerous?"

"Let's just say he's a certain kind of crazy where you only keep him around 'cause you don't want to see how he'd react if he was told to get out," Davis noted with a cautious shrug. "If he's after something… he'd probably use the biggest ones."

"We will deal with that," Yelena said with a cautious grin at the other man. "Thank you for your time."

Considering the time frame between now and the deal, Yelena chose not to worry about cutting Davis loose from the webbing on his hands right now; he had made his choice and that meant he would have to live with the consequences. She and Peter had a narrow window of opportunity to potentially find a new lead, which meant that they had to move fast.

Of course, it cannot hurt to be sure what others are aware of regarding this particular deal first…
