Chapter 8: Egypt
Demetri and Felix Volturi had met up with Eleazar and Carmen Denali to investigate the disappearance of most of the Egyptian Coven, Benjamin and his mate Kebi had managed to get away and had sought refuge from the allies that Amun had instructed him to find, the Denali coven. Upon hearing their story, Tanya Denali, the coven leader, had immediately called the Volturi with Eleazar and Carmen. This was how they learned that the Queen's were currently dealing with an urgent mission that required all three of them to leave Volterra and the Elite Guard were left to run the place in their stead while the Royal Guards were with the Queens. After informing the Queen's about what had happened, Athenodora had ordered Demetri and Felix to go with Eleazar and Carmen and investigate the site of the attack and try and figure out what attacked the Egyptian Coven. This is what led them to their current situation.
Empty, there was nothing for them to even remotely identify from the battle and the location the coven once resided in that Benjamin had given them. There were no bodies, there was no scent, no tracks, there was no sign of the battle. But what was more alarming was that there was no evidence that a coven even resided here which made the four of them on edge as all of them knew that the Egyptian's had resided here, Carmen and Eleazar even having visited once or twice over the millennium.
"It's too clean," Felix grunted.
"Demetri, your gift?" Eleazar asked.
"Nothing, I can't smell anything, I can't track anything. There are no scents, it's clean, too clean," Demetri replied, the level of cleanliness displayed disturbed them.
"I can't find anything either, it's like magic…" Carmen trailed off.
"Perhaps we should ask the Queen's if they can send Sanguine if he isn't needed anymore?" Eleazar asked.
"We will make the call now," Felix agreed, taking his phone out and dialling.
"Felix, report?" Athenodora's voice snapped after the third ring.
"My Queen, it's clean. Too clean, Demetri can't get a single scent at all. There's no sign of a struggle, but also no sign of residency and we know the Egyptian's haven't moved. We think we might need Sanguine," Felix said.
"You think it's…?"
"It's the only explanation," Felix replied.
"I will send Sanguine… and Jane and her new mate, her mate will be especially helpful with this," Athenodora replied, Felix, Demetri, Eleazar and Carmen looked to each other surprised, Jane had found her mate?!
"When can we expect them?" Felix asked, not relishing in waiting for them to travel.
"Jane, when can you, your mate and Sanguine make it to Felix?" Athenodora asked.
"About an hour maybe? I've never been to wherever they are but I've been to Egypt many times hunting Snorkacks… it'll only take me a few moments to have us to Egypt," the soft melodious voice replied, all the four vampires heard it and were shocked, how would they get from the United States to Egypt in an hour?
"Sanguine, Jane and Jane's mate Luna will be there in an hour," Athenodora said before hanging up, the only thoughts they had were 'what the hell?'
"Hey there, my love, it's been a while," Daphne's smiling face and long blonde hair greeted Iris.
Two growls could be heard as Rosalie flashed into the lounge and Leah swiftly followed. Daphne noticed their states of dress including Iris being in a dressing gown and frowned.
"Was I interrupting something?" She asked.
"How the hell did you find me?" Iris countered.
"You know my sister, her fiance is Draco. I asked for his help in tracking you down," Daphne replied.
"Of course, you did, and why did you think it was a good idea to find me and show up like you did?"
"Because after almost a year I thought you'd had enough time to cool off from… everything and we could try again."
"Try again! What the hell Daphne! Why would you think we could ever try again after what you did!"
"Iris, I didn't do anything. It was an impossible decision for me, and you know it. I didn't do anything," Daphne sighed as Iris was getting angry.
"Exactly! You didn't do ANYTHING! You claimed to love me, support me and to be there for me as my girlfriend! But when I needed you to stand by me most… You. Did. Nothing," Iris prodded her finger into the taller blonde's shoulder.
Sensing her anger, Rosalie wrapped an arm around Iris and pulled her back into her slightly while Leah flanked her other side and resting an arm against the door frame as both appeared properly in the doorway.
"Calm down my love," Rosalie murmured.
"Is there a reason you're here upsetting our ma-girlfriend," Leah growled.
"I'm sorry you feel that way Iris, but my father was on the other side. I couldn't go against him. I'm going to let you cool off and come back in a bit and we can talk like adults," Daphne pointedly ignored both Leah and Rosalie as she spoke.
"I don't want you here Daphne, please just leave me alone. You're good at doing that," Iris said, a pained almost furious look came across Daphne's face for moments before she took in a deep breath.
"I know you're hurt, so I won't take that to heart. I'll be back for you Iris, we belong together, and I'll do whatever it takes to make you see that," Daphne said as she turned and left, disappearing with a pop.
Iris slumped back against Rosalie as Leah closed the door for her, feeling exhausted Iris wiped the tears from her eyes. Both Rosalie and Leah had half a mind to try and hunt the blonde witch down and make her pay for making their mate upset but right now she needed them to comfort her more than she needed them to go after Daphne.
"Let's go back to bed," Leah lifted Iris up bridal style, the witch curled into her warm body and silently wept as they ascended the stairs and back to Iris' room.
"So that was Daphne Greengrass?" Rosalie stated as they slipped under the covers of Iris' queen-sized bed, the witch in the middle of her and Leah.
"Yeah, my first real girlfriend," Iris chuckled humourlessly.
"She's… pretty?" Leah supplied and Iris let out a small laugh.
"I can see how you fell for her," Rosalie added.
"Blonde, beautiful, ambitious and cunning. Wasn't afraid to put others in their place and always listened to me, provided me with advice, support, comfort. But when I needed her most, needed her to fight by my side, she did nothing," Iris murmured.
"An impossible decision, she called it?" Rosalie asked gently.
"Her father, Lord Cyrus Greengrass, was a Death Eater on Voldemort's side. She would have had to betray her family to side with me," Iris sighed, rationally she knew that Daphne was put in an impossible position, but she had hoped that their love was strong enough that Daphne would have stayed by her side. But she didn't, she chose to do nothing and that hurt Iris.
"I know that if the pack threatened to kick me out for who my imprints are, I would gladly turn my back on my family for my imprints," Leah chimed in.
"It's different for us though, we're beings that mate for eternity or life and there is only one mate for us," Rosalie said.
"I know, and after that I just… I didn't want to see her again for a while and now I have you two. I don't need her to be there for me anymore," Iris admitted, Rosalie and Leah beamed at Iris's words.
"We will always be here for you Iris; we're not going anywhere."
Delphine arrived back at her hideout furious, shedding the visage of Daphne swiftly as she headed to her personal duelling room to let out her frustration.
"How could she!" Delphine roared as she tore apart the practice dummies piece by piece.
Dr. Sarkov had entered not long after she arrived and was patiently waiting for her to finish letting out her anger, something else that she did that her father didn't was take her frustrations and anger out on dummies and inanimate objects instead of followers. They all appreciated not being hexed in frustration for things they couldn't control. After almost an hour of watching she had calmed down enough for him to speak with her properly.
"I take it your… reunion did not go to plan?" He asked gently.
"Mildly, I expected some resistance, but I didn't expect a vampire and a shifter to have claimed her as their own," she growled, he looked surprised for a few moments before looking thoughtful.
"A mate or imprint bond I assume?" He asked, she nodded.
"Interesting, perhaps, this can be used to your advantage, my lady?" He offered; she paused before looking at him with mild curiosity.
"Explain?"
"I have heard that such bonds are possible to manipulate with very dark magic, they would require for you to completely and utterly break down your desired targets mental fortitude and leave their minds vulnerable enough for the magic to take those bonds and place them upon another. Then you could rebuild her as you see fit and she would be yours for the eternity you'll share," he replied.
"And you have access to such knowledge?"
"I have access to parts of it, my lady. But I'm sure we could track down the rest of it through the Black-Market channels we have. I think the hardest part would be the mental breaking of Miss Potter's psyche, from what I understand she is quite strong willed."
"You let me worry about correcting my love's mind, find me that information as soon as possible," Delphine growled, before she took a deep breath and centred herself.
"My apologies, I am frustrated. Thank you for offering up this information to me, Dr. Sarkov, now how is project Chimera tracking?"
"With great success, Subjects Alpha, Beta and Charlie all but decimated the Egyptian Vampire coven and we cleaned up. Though we do believe a few of them managed to escape they're not worth tracking down, in my opinion. From the data gathered, we should be able to have subject Delta operational soon," he replied.
"And the ICW?"
"Have no idea or any inkling as to what happened, Aro has kept it under wraps and believes the Queens are still blind about everything. Though he does have two vampires he wishes to send our way, apparently Miss Potter killed one of their coven mates and they want revenge."
"Revenge they will never get, but can we use them for the projects?"
"Perhaps, I have only said that you may potentially meet with them if you deem them worthy of your time at all. I would never dream to make any decisions on your behalf," he said sincerely.
"Thank you, Dr. Sarkov, your loyalty is much appreciated. How soon do you believe we can shift from the testing stage to the production stage?"
"In my opinion, if we start procuring the number of bodies required for each type of chimera then we can start mass production almost immediately. There are a few small kinks we need to fix, but nothing too major. Should the source material be of substantial quality that will be enough to get 95% of the adaptations completed with the remaining 5% being the fine tuning. I predict we can have about 20 of each Chimera type ready in about 3 months, 3 and a half if some of them are being difficult," he replied.
"Excellent, then I shall have the bodies procured for you. How goes the process of the vampire subject?"
"Subject Delta has proven to be our most difficult chimera creation yet, but we've almost got it ready. A vampire's body is quite durable and recovers quickly if it has a steady supply of blood available. Frankly, Vladimir has proven to be a lot more of an exciting test subject than the Werewolf."
"And what was done with the bodies of the Egyptian Coven?"
"We are able to reassemble them and begin production on more Delta class Chimera's once Subject Delta is stable."
"Excellent, work with your timeline then and I shall work with mine. Once I have the information you can procure for me. 3 months should be more than enough time for me to make Iris mine. And then we can launch our impending take over of the world, without their saviour, they won't know what to do," Delphine smirked.
"What of her friends?"
"They'll fall in line; I will see to it that Iris and I put them in line ourselves once she is ready."
"Excellent, 3 and a half months it is."
One thing Luna was thankful for in her line of work was the global portkey's she had access and free use of as the Head of the Department for Inter-Species relations. The ICW had deemed the need for such a department within the individual governments to be essential going forward due to the number of species that sided with Voldemort and even Grindelwald, so having a dedicated department only made sense and Kingsley had trusted Luna with the job for the British Ministry.
When they arrived in Egypt, Luna held a queasy Jane who was dry heaving venom in her mouth from the sensation of magical travel, Sanguine only smirking at her.
"Is it always that bad?" Jane asked, Luna patting her back gently.
"It gets better, the first time is always the worst. Unless you're Iris, who can't seem to ever land on her feet using a Portkey or Floo," Luna replied.
"Well, we're in Egypt now, so let's head to where the others are," Sanguine suggested.
"Are you alright to move?" Luna asked Jane who nodded, shaking her head.
"The vertigo is gone now; do you want me to carry you bridal or do you want to get on my back?" Jane asked, Luna paused for a few moments.
"I'll say the bridal carry for when we have our own house… or room, or whatever. I'll take the piggyback please," Luna said, Jane nodded, turning around and gesturing for Luna to get on.
It took them about fifteen minutes at vampire speed to move between magical Cairo towards where the Egyptian coven were known to be, arriving and slowing down so Luna could adjust to not moving Jane arrived a few minutes after Sanguine.
The Egyptian coven's home was a cave system on the outskirts of Cairo around 10km from the villages in the surrounding areas. They were met by Felix and Demetri who looked at Jane with curiosity as Luna found her legs. Jane growled at their staring before she was tapped on the shoulder by her mate.
"Jane… no growling at your fellow guard members," Luna scolded, Jane stopped growling but glared at the two of them daring them to say anything.
"Eleazar, Carmen, how wonderful it is to see you again," Sanguine greeted the spanish couple, the two of them replied to their warm greetings before they too turned to Jane and Luna.
"Jane," Eleazar said with a respectful nod.
"Eleazar, Carmen," she replied with her own nod, meanwhile Luna just skipped up to the pair humming happily.
"Hello, I'm Luna Lovegood, Jane's mate and Head of the Department of Inter-Species relations for Magical Britain," she said giving Carmen a kiss on the cheek before doing the same to Eleazar and turning to a growling Jane.
"Jane, no growling," Luna scolded.
"But!"
"Janeeeeeeeee."
"Fine."
"Luna is a Witch, she's here to help with the investigation," Sanguine explained.
"Show us the area," Jane said to Demetri and Felix, both were trying hard to ignore the pout on her face and not tease her.
"Right this way," Felix, the more stoic of the two said with a smirk and began leading them back inside the Egyptian Coven's residence.
They brought the three new members into the home that the Egyptian Coven had previously inhabited and much like their initial responses, there was no sign that anything or anyone lived here, and the scents were completely wiped. Sanguine, however, was able to detect traces of foreign magic but that's about as much as he could tell. Luna, on the other hand was touching the walls and looking at the plant life, as little as it was. She then pulled out her wand.
"I'm sensing some kind of magical influence," Sanguine said.
"Revelio," Luna intoned, casting the revealing charm.
The vampires watched transfixed as the magic expanded from Luna's wand and saw an abundance of footsteps become revealed along with various marks on the ground, walls, surrounding areas and even the previous presence of body parts. What's even more surprising was that there was evidence of other life around as well.
"So, this is magic?" Eleazar said in awe.
"A small bit of it, however, it's clear some kind of conflict happened here. Judging from the marks around the place it was violent," Luna's voice took on a hard edge, Jane found herself gently stroking her mate's back in concern.
"What could do this to a coven of vampires?" Carmen asked.
"There are many magical creatures that exist that could do this, but for the evidence to be cleanly removed where only magic could detect it? We're looking at the work of a Dangerous Magical trafficking group at best and a magical terrorist organisation at worst," Luna replied, waving her wand.
"Expecto Patronum," her small rabbit patronus materialised.
"Send a message to the ICW, I need an international investigation team sent to Egypt. Evidence of an abducted or destroyed vampire coven on the outskirts of Cairo on my location."
After the message was sent Luna turned back to the group who were open-mouthed except for Sanguine and Jane held a smirk at watching her mate use magic.
"If you had to guess. What kind of creature could have done this?" Sanguine asked.
"The violence is too great for it to be a team of Witches or Wizards, the space to small for the larger creatures. My guess is either a half-human group or potentially a Chimera or Displaced Beast, perhaps even a Nundu," Luna replied.
