A/N: Sorry this is so late! Things have been busy...
Chapter 36
The oxygen was sucked out of her lungs and her body felt like it was on fire. She tried to scramble backwards to get to some sort of cover, but her body wasn't reacting the way it should. Suddenly, she found herself being pulled backwards.
"Are you all right?" It was Kara. The Kryptonian had pulled her behind the flipped over ARGUS vehicle.
"Get… your… sister…" Kate managed. Her ribs were definitely broken. A small price to pay considering that she should have been dead. Her suit had absorbed the impact of a sniper's bullet. The brunette knew that her friend was gone – she'd done as she'd been told.
"What happened?" J'onn asked.
"Sniper… Nyssa…" Kate realized that the former League of Assassins leader was probably a sitting duck.
"She's safe. Well mostly. Nasty head contusion, possible concussion, and a broken arm," he explained. That's when he heard Kara calling him to her aid. She had two people she had to save and the sniper had started taking pot shots at the top of the vehicle.
"Be right back. Don't move," he said. Kate just nodded. Her lungs were only taking shallow breaths in an effort to avoid aggravating her ribs. The sounds of sirens rang in her ears. They were only about a block away and the sniper had shifted their focus aiming at the incoming vehicles. They needed help and that's when Kate heard the unmistakable sound of Kara speeding away.
"We have to move you," Alex's voice brought her focus back to the people next to her. J'onn was with her and Agent Mattingly as well.
"Broken ribs," Kate told her.
"Where are the rest of the agents? Have we caught Natasha?" Mattingly wanted to know.
"Later," J'onn told them as he took off to help Kara. The three were safe up against the bottom of the armored vehicle for the time being.
"We were sold out," Alex said. Kate nodded in agreement as the redhead gently checked over the hero of Gotham's chest area.
"That was a big bullet – a .300 Winchester Magnum, I think," Alex remarked about the remnants of the bullet she'd seen on the ground during their escape to behind the vehicle.
"Anti-personnel bullet – though I imagine they're all anti-personnel," Samanatha was holding her right shoulder. Kate scoffed and immediately regretted it.
"Ok, enough of that. I can't feel too well through your suit, but you definitely have multiple broken ribs," the redhead informed her. Kate waggled her eyebrows at the feel comment which almost caused Alex's cheeks to become as red as her hair. It was funny because they both knew that Alex was spoken for and that Kate would never make a move on her. The moment needed some humor and it got it.
"Batwoman!" That voice was definitely Sophie's. The backup had arrived.
"She's got broken ribs. Agent Mattingly has a banged-up shoulder. Where are the rest of the ARGUS agents?" Alex wanted to know, all business.
"I don't know. Both Supergirl and Martian Manhunter took off after the sniper. The rest of the crew is scooping up the attackers that were captured," Sophie explained. Alex went for her comms but got nothing but static in return.
"Comms are down," the redhead frowned.
"Figures," Samantha shook her head.
"Bomb… EMP?" Kate spoke up.
"Could be. Not sure how they knew your route," Sophie said as she flagged down the EMTs that had arrived on the scene.
"This was our one shot at getting Natasha," Alex was upset as the EMTs scoped out the situation. She then gave them her medical opinion explaining the situation.
"We have to get her out of her suit," the one man said.
"Nope," Kate was not having it.
"I'll take care of that," Kara's voice made everyone look up.
"I think we found who we were looking for," the blonde smirked as she lowered down to the ground. She was holding a bent metal pipe which had been wrapped around a woman wearing a bulletproof vest. The woman was swearing in Russian.
"Sounds about right," Alex chuckled at her sister.
