When Qrow found out he was going to be a dad he didn't know how to feel. On one hand he was happy, more happy than he ever could be. To have someone that looks up to him and will love him, a chance to have a Branwen that was a completely garbage person. It was a rush of thrill. Then a rush of dread. He knew he never should have been a father. He was not a good man, he was tangled in a horrible fate.
He knew he would be forced to be gone for long periods of time leaving his kid behind. What kind of dad would that be? One who would leave on life threatening quests with a good chance of never coming back. On top of that he was a ladies man, he liked to drink. And… and his semblance would always put it in danger. No Qrow knew he never should be a dad.
But the way Lily looked at him when she told him brought joy to his face. She was so full of life and happiness that he couldn't' imadgen simply leaving her and never looking back. It wasn't that he couldn't, he wasn't married to Lily or anything, it wasn't that he didn't offer but she simply didn't want that. He did love her though and refused to leave her. Lily Arc, the woman Qrow Branwen had a relationship with. It started just as a fling, she was just the pretty waitress of his favorite bar in all of vale.
They enjoyed each other's bodies so soon it was just casual sex. And it eventually became more he would stop by whenever he could to see the golden haired beauty. And they fell into an easy romance. Technically it was an open relationship but they both knew they didn't want anyone but the other. After he learned of her pregnancy he made the attempt to ask for her hand in marriage. She said no, and he was confused, but she said she was happy with how their relationship was and didn't see the need for marriage. As long as he would come back as much as he could to spend time with her and their son or daughter, maybe some money to help her care for them. Qrow readily agreed.
This would work. He wouldn't be a danger to his child and girlfriend, but still be allowed to be a part of their life. This was the best possible outcome. Lily had no family, her parents already dead and being an only child no siblings to speak of so it would just be them and he was sure he could keep them safe. He didn't feel the need to introduce her to Tai, Raven, and Summer. He knew Raven would only be mean and annoying, now even more so since she was pregnant herself. He didn't like the thought of Tai meeting Lily for some reason, and finally he wanted to introduce Summer, but he knew she would insist on introducing the others. He loved his old partner. He really did (at one point more than he even realized) but he didn't want to Put Lily in any danger, and the more people she knew in the inner circle. The more danger she would be, and especially now that she was pregnant he refused to do that to her.
So that is how their life together advanced. Qrow went out doing missions but always came back to her. And he couldn't help the feeling he got when she would look up and notice him, excitedly waving with a smile not even the sun could match in brilliance. He was absolutely for the first time in his life, In love. 9 months passed and his Kid was born. He came back to the bar one day and the owner said he could Find Lily at home since she just had a kid and he gave her some time off. Qrow almost passed out when he heard that. He rushed to her apartment and felt a sense of awe at her. She stood there with their son in her arms as she smiled at him welcoming him home. At that moment he couldn't have been happier.
They decided on the name Jaune Arc. not Jaune Branwen since Qrow didn't want his son to have anything to do with his family's name. And for several months everything is fine. He would once again go on missions, come back, spend time with Lily and play with Jaune. He was happy. But be it fate, the gods, or even his semblance this wouldn't last. He just wished he would have noticed sooner. Subtle things, like the way she was paler, or her small coghes… how she was always so tired. And one day he got a call, and she was just… just gone. He rushed to her village as fast as humanly possible. And when he got home. It was empty. No life in it. He went to the local police station where he collected Jaune, as per her will he was to be given to his father. He demanded to know what happened. And all they could do was tell him she had been sick.
He settled her affairs and attended her funeral. Holding an only 7 month old Jaune. In her will she ensured he would get full custody. And left him some mementos and a single letter. That night in the motel after the funeral he read it. He couldn't help but laugh at the way she started using her nickname for him.
My love,
My darling,
My heart,
My Qrow
I'm not sure how to tell you this, especially since this will be my final thoughts I share with you. I hope I can convey the message I wanted through this. Qrow I'm sick right now. The doctors don't know what it is, they can't heal it. I know it was wrong to hide it from you, but I couldn't bring myself to tell you. At first I didn't think much of it. I was sick. I've been sick before. But when the doctor said I was gonna die because they couldn't fix me. I was scared. I like to think I know you pretty well (Not just your body perv.) but as my love and the father of our baby. I know about your semblance and I just know you would have blamed yourself for this. I don't think I could bear to put that on your shoulders. But I'm scared Qrow. I'm not ready to die quite yet. And Jaune… I don't wanna leave him. He is so little. But I know you're gonna be an amazing Dad. I see the way you smile when you hold him; it always makes my heart flutter. I guess now that I think about it, one of my only regrets will be not accepting your proposal. I think I would have liked being called Lily Branwen. But I still don't regret our relationship. I am very happy with it actually. Even if you're not my husband, you have been a wonderful partner, lover, and father. And I'm so happy I had the chance to have a life with you. Please when I'm gone take good care of Jaune. He is still so small. I don't mind if you find another woman to be his mother, I'm not a terribly jealous woman, it's not in my nature. But if you decide to keep my memory in his head, have him remember me how I was, not how I am now. I feel so weak Qrow, so small and tired. I don't want my baby to think of me like that. Tell him how much I love him, I would fly to the moon and back for him. And you. You both have made my life worth living and if I could do everything over again. I would only tell you I love you more than I did. I love you Qrow Branwen, goodbye for now. Don't be sad my love I'm sure we'll see each other again somehow.
Love,
Lily Arc
That was how his last letter he ever got from her. Qrow had lost a lot of people, in a lot of ways, but somehow none of them had ever hurt quite this much. While Jaune slept for the first time in a long time, he wept openly.
Leaving her village he didn't know what to do. It was now just him and 7 month old Jaune. So he did the only thing he could think of. He went to patch, to Tai and his sister. They just had a daughter, his niece Yang. She was younger than Jaune, but only by about a month. 21 day apart to be exact. He hoped they would teach him how to be a dad. The look of surprise on Tai's face when he knocked on the door holding Jaune was surprised to say the last. He sputtered asking Qrow who's kid that was. When Qrow casually told him Jaune was his, Tai passed out. Qrow almost passed out when Summer came running up asking
"Honey, are you okay?"
Stories were quickly exchanged, Qrow learned shortly after Yang was born Raven abandoned them. And they learned the entire story of his love with Lily and her death. To say he was mad when he learned Raven ran would have been the understatement of the century. How dare his sister leave her less than a year old daughter! His son had lost his mother because the Gods ripped her away from them, Raven simply chose to walk away because she didn't see value in little Yang. he had to step outside for a while and take a large sip of his flask to cool down.
After that he formally introduced his son to Tai and Summer.
"This little runt is my son, Jaune Arc." he says with half a grin as he held out Jaune to Tai and Summer, the latter eagerly taking him in her arms fawning over the new little blond baby she was gonna dedicate herself to taking care of.
"Oh my gosh look at his cute little hands!" She says taking one of them in her own " and he has your eyes." she says smiling, cradling the boy closer and booping him on the nose. He did have his fathers eyes, he hoped he would have gotten his mothers beautiful cyan orbs, but it still did fill him with a small sense of pride that his son had his own crimson eyes.
"Let's hope that's the only thing he gets from you." Tai jokes.
"Ha ha very funny" Qrow growles, then his expression softens a little " I hope he get his mother's personality,"
"Hey I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything by what I was saying I was just joking" Tai apologized, it was one thing to have a wife leave you, it was another to have the woman you love die. "You know we have enough space around here if you wanted to you could move in with us" he offers.
"Really? Do you really want someone like me around?" Qrow looks up at Tai
"Sure, we could both help each other, and I'm sure Yang will love growing up with her uncle and cousin around."
"I'm not even sure if I can be around the kids…" Qrow says honestly "I'm more of a danger to them than I wish I was"
"Everyone needs help sometimes," Summer says, taking a hold of his hand. " Besides, every child needs a mother figure. I'm already gonna try and be that for Yang, and I'd be happy to help with Jaune"
"If you're sure. But I still wanna keep some distance from them until they're old enough to protect themselves from my semblance."
"Qrow you wouldn't dare aband-" Summer starts
" No, of course not! " He quickly replies " I just mean I'll help financially by going on missions while you care for them until I can worry less about hurting them with my semblance. I would never leave Jaune… he's my only reminder of my Lily."
"Just promise not to leave, he will need you. You're his dad." Summer said with a serious look on her face.
"I Know. When I'm not on a mission I'll do my best to be a father like Lily thought I could be."
"Why not just be the father Jaune needs you to be. If you try to live up to expectations you can't achieve, you'll only hurt yourself and Jaune." summer said wisely. Qrow thought for a moment and nodded. He would be what Jaune needed him to be. He loved Lily and would try to live up to her, but he knew he also had to find out what parenthood was for himself.
A year passed and True to the promise he made to himself Qrow was the best father he could be. He spent a good amount of time out on missions making money for the family. Speaking of family, Tai remarried and to Summer of all people. Now Yang had a stepmom. And Jaune was treated like her other child and Yang's slightly older brother. As soon as his personality started to take form, they could tell he was the happy, yet quiet type. He never made much sound at all and was content to just sit with Summer and have her read him a book. He was much different than Yang who from the moment she could walk was running. It didn't seem like he hated that kind of thing or anything, but he simply liked books and the quiet better. Still like any child his age he could be routy with Yang, or yell and scream. But he was only one year old so it was okay for now. He would grow up soon enough.
The only thing of note from his first year of life. Was his hair seeming to be not just blond like his mother but also naturally thick like her also. If you glanced at him and Yang you couldn't tell they were not siblings.
A few more years passed and nothing of note happened, besides the birth of Ruby Rose, the Daughter of Taiyang and Summer. Yang and Jaune were now 5 and Ruby was 3. They all got along very well, but Yang and Jaune were especially close, being almost twins. Jaune was just as quiet as ever, whenever he said something it was usually important, and Yang was wild as ever, she did more than enough talking for the both of them. While Jaune preferred his books, he would happily allow Yang to pull him from the couch and force him on adventures with her. He never complained, simply smiled and went with her. Summer loved them both dearly and now with Ruby around she found even more love in herself to share between the 3 kids. Qrow was proud of his kid, Juane was growing up a lot like his mother. By age 4 his son was already reading smaller chapter books, he oftentimes needed help with some of the bigger words, but his love for books and dive to learn led him leaps and bounds in the literary world. Lily was quiet and bookish also, but was never one to shy away from an adventure off the pages too. That was part of the reason he was so attracted to her in the first place.
He could easily spend the day sitting inside curled up on the couch with some book he was reading, or just as easily spend it wrestling in the mud with Yang for hours. He was a pretty smart young boy, in school his best subject was easy English and spelling closely followed by gym, but those two sections were really the only places he shined, he was in most regards just a normal boy.
So it was concerning to say the least when he was walking back home after a mission one day, only to feel a presence he hadn't felt in a while.
"Raven." Qrow said gruffly. A bird that was in the trees looked down at him from its original target of observation. That Being Yang and Jaune Wrestling in the grass.
With a hop down from the tree into the bushes the bird disappeared, replaced by a woman with hair the color of her name, and eyes as bloody red as his own.
"Hello Brother." she said a small smug smirk on her face. "I see you haven't completely let yourself go if you noticed me."
"Why are you watching your daughter. I hope you don't intend to take her." he says, placing a hand on his weapon. "Or maybe have you decided to stop being a coward and be a mother."
"Watch yourself Qrow. I don't care for that accusation in your tone." she growled. "Besides if I wished to take the girl I simply would have and you couldn't have stopped me." she says. As much as he hated to admit it, if she portaled he didn't think he could stop her.
"That 'girl' is your daughter," he says aggressively.
"I am aware I gave birth to her." she answers in a non caring tone. "But I wasn't watching her."
"Then who-" he started
"Who else you idiot, My Nephew." she said, turning back to the children. Yang was a strong little girl in her own right, but Jaune was still stronger. And no matter how Yang tried Jaune always got the upper hand and pinned her, the young girl either tapping out and pouting before attacking again, or trying dirty tricks to win. "He has potential. Unlike the girl." it was already a bad sign she actually acknowledged Jaune as her Nephew. She would never call someone family, or by their name if she didn't respect, or see potential in them.
"Keep your eyes away from my son." Qrow warns
"Don't you want him to be strong? Do you want all of the Branwen offspring to be a disappointment?"
"How dare you call your own daughter a disappointment."
"Anything else would be a lie."
"Stay away from my son."
"Just let me take him, and I'll make him something you can truly be proud of."
"A murderer and thief?"
"A warrior. And eventually a chief, I've been watching him for a while, and he is nothing like the girl. He shows promise I have never seen in a child before. Not even us."
"I want him to grow up how he wants Raven, not the way our Parents cafted us."
"Our parents did a fine Job, look at me. I am one of the most feared women in all of mistral, no all of remnant."
"And why would I want that for my son!"
"Because he will die like all the rest of the weaklings if I don't make him strong! Would you truly waste potential for something as stupid as a childs dream!?"
"FOR MY SON YES!"
"Then you are a fool. Either you make him strong. Or I will take him and make him strong myself"
"If you touch my son, there will be no place on remnant you could hide from my Scythe."
"Train him and I won't have to."
With that Raven turned looking one last time at the children playing.
"If you waste potential like that, there will be no reason for me to help you or Ozpin anymore, for we are already doomed." a shining red and black portal opened and she was gone. Qrow sighed, and walked into the clearing, watching as Summer ran outside to stop the kids from wrestling before someone lost an eye as she would put it. If he ever trained his son. That would be Jaune's choice, not his, and not Ravens.
The only other major thing that happened that year was a simple talk he had with Jaune one night.
Qrow sat on the porch with a glass of soda in his hand since he was trying to limit his drinking habit. It was a cool Summer night and the rest of the house was asleep. It was a nice time to just sit and think, think about how Lily would be if she could only see Jaune now. He was so happy. Yang and Jaune both slept early that day from the excitement of a day trip to the park. It was a good way to burn out their energy. They ran around home for a while before both crashing on Jaune's Bunk.
When they were old enough for their own rooms, Yang complained and Begged to share a room with her brother, throwing a fit when she thought they might be split from the nursery. So it came to be they had bunk beds in their own room while Ruby inherited the Nursery all to herself. It wasn't that Yang and Jaune didn't love their little sister but they simply had a few more years together under their belt naturally growing closer to each other. It made Qrow happy to see his son and Nieces so happy. To Jaune they were his sisters. It had been an early agreement by the parents that Summer would be called Mom by all the kids, until Yang and Jaune could understand about their mothers, Jaune knew Qrow was his Dad and Yang knew Tai was hers, yet they never really seemed to question how it worked that summer was both their mom.
He heard the creek of the door and looked away from the stars to see Jaune standing next to him, his hair messy from the bed, and his pumpkin pete sleeping shirt ruffled.
"Hey Runt, aren't you supposed to be asleep." he says, cracking a smile. As Jaune walked over to him.
"Yep." he said, taking a seat next to his father. At least he is honest Qrow though with a chuckle.
"Then why are you out here with your old man?"
"You looked lonely." he said, placing his hand on his father's. Qrow smiled and ruffled his boy's hair.
"I guess I was. Do you wanna sit here with me for a while kiddo?" Jaune nodded a small smile on his face. They sat in silence for a while, enjoying each other's company. Until Jaune shattered the silence with a heart stopping question.
"Mommys, not really my mommy is she." he says quietly.
"What?" Qrow says stunned.
"She's not really my Mommy, is she?" he repeats.
"Why would you say that?"
"I heard her and Uncle Tai talking about it. They were asking if it was a good time to tell me yet." he says with a small voice. Qrow sighs and promises pain to Tai for this later, but he had the right to know about his real mom. Lily.
"You're right. She's not really your mommy."
"Where is my real mom then?"
"... she… Jaune, she died."
"Oh… why?"
"She was sick kiddo. She just couldn't get better."
"Oh… *sniffle." with this Jaune started to quietly cry and Qrow placed his arm around his son's shoulder holding him till he regained some control. "Did you love her?"
"Yes, she was a light in my life. She was amazing. And I know she loved you a lot too."
"Really?"
"Yeah, she was always so happy to even be around you."
"What was she like?" he asked
"Would you like to see a picture?" Jaune nodded. Qrow pulled out his scroll and pulled up a picture of him and Lily happily smiling, her arms around his neck as he took the picture.
"She is pretty." Jaune said, amazed by the picture.
"Yeah she was. He was nice too. A lot like you mommy now. She also liked books like you, you remind me a lot of her."
"I do?" the boy says hopefully.
"You do, would you like to hear more about her?" he asks Jaune happily nods. And until Jaune falls asleep again. Qrow tells him stories about his mother. A weight lifted from his chest and he couldn't help but feel closer to Jaune, now they both share the loss of Lily, it was just him suffering alone and silent anymore. But now he had someone he would love to talk about her with.
The next year was the one that had made his life go from fine, to a really big day to day crapshoot. Jaune was Gone. they had looked everywhere. But couldn't find him and Qrow was panicking. Jaune had only just started to learn about combat, but did Raven really make it true and take him? That thought terrorfied him. Him and Tai looked through the woods. While Summer Yang and Ruby looked through the town. Summer was supposed to be on a mission that day, but this came up and she refused to leave her family. Oz wanted her to go look into the grimm lands. But since her boy was gone. She made a priority for him. (it would later turn out this day had saved her from a fate worse than death, as another person was sent in her place ambushed and killed.)
Eventually after hours of looking Qrow found his son walking through the woods alone.
"JAUNE MILES ARC!" he roared "Where have you been!" he rushes and grabs his son, feeling his anger quickly be replaced by relief.
"Dad…" Jaune said shaking starting to cry
"Explain Jaune why are you out here?" Qrow demands
"... I don't belong here." he says tears leaking from his eyes
"What?"
"I always here you and uncle Tai talk about money, and how you always have to go on another one because three little mouths are hard to feed." he says
"Jaune that doesn't mean you run away. Sure we have to work a lot, but that doesn't mean you don't belong here."
"But mum is always so tired. And I feel so guilty bugging her when I'm not even her real son" he cries."
"Jaune-"
"I don't wanna make you all sad!" he yells "I just wanna leave!"
"Are you sure?" Qrow asks, sucking in a breath. Jaune nodes.
"Then I'll go with you." Qrow says
"What?" Jaune asks sniffling.
"I'll go with you. I'm not just gonna let you leave. But maybe it is time we both see a little of the world." he says. Jaune wipes his eyes. "Maybe you're right in a way. We have been a lot to deal with… maybe we should give them a break for a while. And take one ourself. And I kinda want to train you to be like me if you want. I'm not sure here is the safest place for that." Qrow explains.
"Will we really go?"
"If that's what you really want, then yes. We will."
"I really want to." Jaune replies.
"Then why don't we go home and quickly grab some of our stuff and forge our own path."
"Okay… Dad. is it really alright for you to come with me?"
"Yes runt, I Promised you mom, I would never abandon you. Your real mom."
With this sorted out a little bit better. Qrow and Juane went home and gathered some things. But Qrow insisted they wait till the others came home so they could at least explain and say goodbye. When they did make it home, everything was explained. After a tearful goodbye Summer kissed Jaune's head and put a silver bracelet on his arm. It was going to be his birthday gift so he could look like his father, but now seemed like a good time. Ruby and Yang both cried and didn't want to let him go. But after a while they reluctantly did. And finally the time came that Jaune and Qrow would depart on their own journey. One that would start Jaune Arc the son of Qrow Branwen, on one of the greatest stories ever told.
