Safe and Sound
Chapter 1: The Cabin
I'm exhausted. It has been two days since we were separated from the others. This world, even as it burns is something of an anomaly. The once brightly coloured forest, though filled with red flames and destruction, still glowed with beauty. I looked down to the unconscious woman in my arms. How could this have happened? Everything was so peaceful. For the first time in a year since father died, we were all happy, smiling and enjoying our new lives. As much as we missed our human friends back on Earth, we were depressed in New York.
She was injured, bruises covering her body from head to toe. She had a nasty gash on her forehead. She definitely has a concussion, and was out cold in my arms. I myself was not doing well either. A deep cut on my leg had been pooling blood from the sharp edge of a blade. My once coloured bandanna was now a dark red, almost black as it was being used as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. I had lost a lot of blood myself and my vision was fading in and out. I refused to allow myself to stop moving. Not until we were safe. Not until she was safe.
My blood loss was beginning to catch up with me and my legs were about to give out when we finally approached a cabin that had not been touched by the surrounding flames. I remember the stories that had been shared with my brothers and I about the legendary fire resistant trees deep within the forest. I never expected to actually find a cabin built out of said wood.
Upon entering the cabin, I found a couch to lay her on. I searched through the closets and found us some blankets, placing one on her and then I propped myself on a nearby adjacent couch and wrapped up with the other. The fatigue beginning to hit me. This cabin proved to be our safe haven. For the time being we were safe. I only hope the others find us before its too late. My heavy eyes drifted shut, and darkness fell over my body as I fell into a deep unencumbered sleep.
