My name is Delia prior . My father and mother :Andrew and Natalia prior are the leader and ambassador of abnegation. I have two sisters and one brother whose name are beatrice , Maria and Caleb prior . They are all four years old than me .
I am 16 years old this year so that means they are only 12 years old . We born in the city called Chicago. It is a city after a Hundred Years' War . The purpose of the city is to protect the survivors and their children .
Our ancestors built the five faction system to maintain the peace . The five factions are : abnegation, erudite , dauntless , Candor and amity. Every factions have their own purpose : abnegation provides us with selfless government leaders, erudite provides us with technologies and educated teachers, dauntless provides us with protection from within and without, Candor provides us with sound leaders in law and amity provides us with counsellors and care taker. Without any of them, we don't have any reasons to live .
When the kids reach 16years old, they have to choose a faction. They can either to stay in their original faction or leave them. However if we choose to leave the original faction , then that means we forsake our family permanently.
I love my family and all the peace established in abnegation. We help each other whenever we can but I know that I am not selfless enough to stay in abnegation.
"Sister it is time to come down." Caleb is calling me and I awake from my daze .
Today is my 16 years old birthday but we don't celebrate it because it will be an act of self-indulgence . Abnegation values selflessness so we are prohibited to do anything for our own enjoyment.
"Okay I am coming." I reply back.
I wear my watch and it is the only decoration that abnegation is allowed to wear because it is considered practical. Today is also the day that my mom will cut my hair and look at my own reflection.
I sneak out the room with my grey robe and yellow boots. I walk downstair and my mom is ready in front of the mirror panel. She has a pair of Scissor in her hand.
"Come and cut your hair." She smiles at me
I sit down in front of the mirror. Three months can change a person completely. I am now more chubbier and my face is looking rounder . My cheek is also getting more pinky .
My mom is brushing my hair before trimming it.
"You look beautiful mom." I smile back at her.
"Thank you ." Mom nods at me
My mom is really pretty , if she is from other factions. However in abnegation, she has to hide her pretty behind the screen. After brushing my hair, she starts cutting it.
My long hair falls on the ground with blonde dull rings.
"Thank you for cutting my hair ." I lower my head
I shouldn't look at the reflection for too long and I suppose to forget myself so I can help other people more .
"Tomorrow is your aptitude test." Mom says
"Yeah it is ." I sigh
"Are you nervous." Mom slides the panel close
I don't know because we are not allowed to prepare for the test. I only know the test will tell me where I truly belong but it is still our choice.
"No , the test shouldn't change our choice ." I shrug however I am not sure of what I said.
"Right, now let's go have some breakfast" mom pats my back
I stand up and walk downstair . My sisters are sitting there talking and my father is helping Caleb to make breakfast. I will have to make breakfast tomorrow before the test.
"Good morning ." I sit down beside beatrice
"Good morning sister ."beatrice and Maria says together in a union.
I kiss both of their forehead . They love me more than Caleb does. Caleb always follows dad so I am sure even I choose somewhere else , at least he will stay with our parent.
"So today the last day of school for you." Dad and Caleb come with breakfast in their hands
"Yes ."
"Here you are." Caleb puts my plate down.
I nod at him. I don't say anything or kiss his forehead.
"So are you ready ? You have any ideas for what you are choosing?" Dad asks
I am silent. I can't tell him that I don't want to say in abnegation. I feel a pang of guilt from my stomach when I am thinking to leave
"It's okay Delia. Whatever you chose , we will love you forever ." Mom brushes my hair
I finish breakfast as early as possible. I look around
"Where is ted ?" I ask.
"He went back to dauntless for a small meeting." Dad explains
Ted was my body guard from dauntless . He is extremely loyal to the family so even my father likes him.
"So I will go to school alone today." I shrug. "Hope he comes back sooner."
"I ask max to give him a good position after you have chosen but he insists that he wants to go where you go." Mom sighs. "He really likes you."
"We are just friends. I see him more like an elder brother." I feel frustrated
I can't like ted because he isn't my type . He can't like me because I am just a "stiff."
"I have to go. Three of you can finish eating and go by yourself ." I take my bag and run out of the house
I don't even want to wait for my sisters because I am frustrated by dad's question. I don't know what I am going to choose . Then I hear the horn of the train, the dauntless are arriving.
I watch them every morning since the school starts. They arrive by jumping off the train and it fascinated me . Choosing them will be my option. I arrive at the bus station.
"Hey Delia." Someone calls me .
"Yes Susan ." I nod at her
Susan is our neighbour and his father is a business man who travelling around the city.
"How are you today?" I ask
"I am good and how are you?" Susan smiles at me
"I am fine ." I say.
The bus is here and we get on the bus . Then I see a dauntless man sitting there with bandage around his leg.
"Never see a dauntless ride bus." I talk to Susan
"I see that curiosity is prohibited with abnegation" the man stands up. "Don't you know that?"
"I know ." I bite my lips. Yes it is my mistake , a betrayal of abnegation value.
He doesn't say anything and get off at the next station. I wander who he is . Maybe just a soldier who gets injured . I and Susan get off when we are at school.
"I am going to the faction history." I point at upstair
"I am going to math." She stops in front the classroom
She enters and I continue my way upstair . I enter my classroom after a minute . I sit down beside an erudite girl
"Never see you this late ." The erudite girl whose name is Abby talking to me
"Yeah I have some issue with my sisters ." I take out the books
"Oh okay." Abby smiles. "I don't like younger sister or brother because they are annoyed"
I laugh a little . Abby is niece for Jeanine Matthew 's niece and she has two daughters . Jeanine Matthew is erudite representative .
"Your auntie has two kids." I say. "You don't associate with them."
"Not quiet , Linda has a crush on Alan Davis ." Abby sighs.
"Who is that ?" I ask
Abby looks at me again. Curiosity is my biggest mistake
"He is the youngest lieutenant in dauntless but he is a pure devil. He will never fall in love with my cousin. I promise you that." Abby laughs .
"Oh too bad." I say
The class starts soon. Then I hear something outside and I peak a look . Ted is sitting on the tree . He likes to climb the tree every days.
"What are you looking at?" Abby looks at my direction. "Who is that?"
"My body guard ted." I cover a giggle
"Delia and Abby listen carefully." Teacher knocks on the black board
We look at the screen. I feel bored . I want to finish this as soon as possible and I know that I can't be erudite .
After the class finished , I get out of the building choking with fresh air.
"God , I hate the class." I sit on the stair
"Well what happens?" Ted comes toward me
"I can't be erudite even my father doesn't hate them." I shout
Ted sits down beside me . He was from erudite and I knew
"That's why Left then." Ted puts his hand on my shoulder. "Are you going to stay? It's okay to tell me ."
"I am more intended to choose dauntless ." I answer
He looks at me for a long time . He brushes my hair
"Why?" Ted asks
"I want freedom and I am not selfless enough." I say
"You are the kindest person that I ever saw." Ted shakes his head
I know that he is comforting me . I can see from his eyes
"Kindness is for amity and I know that you are trying to make me feel good" I say. "I don't need that."
"I mean it Delia . Dauntless is t what you think . Well if you want to go, I will help you ."ted stands up. "Let's go home."
I stand up with him. We walk side by side .
"You should find someone ." I start to speak
"I don't want to unless that is you." Ted looks at me
"Ted you are just my elder brother ." I sigh. "I am sorry. However what position did max give to you?"
I want to change the the subject. I don't know how
"He wanted me to be the instructor and Alan Davis will watch me ." He shrugs
"What kind of person Alan Davis is ?" I am curious . "I am sorry."
"It's fine . I know you are a curious person and it's okay with me . He is a walking killing machine ." Ted smirks. "However we are good friends."
He is friended with Alan Davis . That is so strange .
"You like him ?"
