Chapter 29

First Hunt and a Gift?!

The first thing I saw was Edward. But he looked so different.

I could finally see him properly and he was even more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Edward beamed at me.

"Well, my beauty, how are you?"

"I'm fine ..."

I fell silent.

My voice sounded so different!

"It's unfamiliar to you, I know! But you'll get used to it, just like any of us did. Are you ready to go hunting for the first time?"

I nodded briefly and we headed off into the woods.

As we stood in a small clearing, I noticed a strange smell and looked at Edward. He was frozen.

"Hold your breath, Bella. A human is near ...!" he said quickly, and I did as he asked.

"Come, let's go on," and we ran deep into the forest.

Edward let me hunt alone at first and when I got the hang of it, we hunted together. I got hold of a cougar and a bear; Edward settled for a deer. They both smelled really enticing. I didn't understand why the others thought humans smelled so much better.

On the way back, the strange smell got into my nose again and Edward looked at me strangely.

"Bella, that's not a funny smell! That is the scent of a human being. But I read in your mind that it doesn't smell the same to you as it does to me or the others. That's really strange!"

"Is that a bad thing?", I asked him.

I was a little worried.

"I don't. Come on, let's go to the house and call Carlisle. He might know more about it!"

"Okay, are we going to have a race?"

I wanted to know which of us was faster.

"Good ... go!", and we ran through the forest at the speed of light - as it seemed to me.

Arriving at the house, Edward grabbed his cell phone and called Carlisle.

He didn't need to turn on the loudspeaker - I understood what Carlisle was saying without it.

Edward explained to him what had happened in the forest. He sounded worried.

Carlisle, however, explained to us that he had expected it to happen this way because I didn't want to hunt people in the first place.

That calmed us both down immensely.

"I think if Bella doesn't pick up on the smell of people, we might as well risk you coming right back to Forks so we don't have to travel. I'm sure Charlie would love that, too," Carlisle explained.

Edward seemed suspicious.

"Do you have any suspicions about her gift or why you don't think she's coming on to Charlie?"

"Yes, I have, Edward. But I'll explain that to you when you get back here. I'd say then ... I'll see you later."

The two said goodbye and hung up.

Edward and I were both deep in thought as we packed our things and headed for Forks.
