Strange Happenings...
3 years later...
The blonde woman sat down to her desk, depositing her mug of coffee by her side before going through the data on her laptop, her eyes darting behind her red-framed glasses from one tab to another.
" You're early as usual." She looked up when the door opened and a certain blond man stepped into the room. He hadn't changed much over the past years, except for his hair which grew even taller he had to tuck his side locks back into his ponytail.
" I have to if I want anything done."
" And you left pretty late yesterday night."
" I thought additional work hours are an honor in Japan." She didn't even bother to spare him a glance.
" They are, but not if it takes over your life." He groaned.
" Is not."
" It is." He said walking to the window, deactivating the black screen that was holding sun rays at bay. Eva winced slightly and backed when they let themselves into her office. " See, you practically hiss at sunlight these days. You hardly walk under it anymore. You get here when it's dark, leave when it's dark too."
Evangeline shrugged, ignoring him as he strode by her side and went back to typing on her laptop. " It's alright. I've got a few days off in the coming month."
" Which you're working on at home. Don't think I don't know." He pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head tiredly. " Seriously Eva, this is called work addiction."
" If such thing existed the world would have been a better place long ago."
" It exists and is definitely not good for you."
" That aside." She said looking up from the laptop as it began debugging the code and extended her hand to him. " That must be the logs I've asked for."
Kousuke heaved another sigh as he handed her the tablet he was holding to and she silently skimmed through it. " I see no problem so far with the logs. I wonder why it bugged the other day?"
That was quite the unusual face she had given him. He hardly could recall Eva stuck figuring the source of a problem they had faced. But that would mean how strange the happening was. For all they know, the programmed test AI for the newest mobile crane started bugging all of a sudden, confusing commands and mushing input data together it was a mess. As the one who developed the AI herself, Eva was at a loss for words of what had happened.
" Oh, and another thing." He suddenly recalled. " Aya wants to thank you for your help the other day."
" It was nothing." She said laying down the tablet with a rather bewildered face. " All I had done was optimizing the script a bit that's all. What I'm worried about..."
She looked at him as though awaiting something and he scowled. " She still can't bring it out yet. She's having a hard time doing the paperwork for now, but as expected, the resistance is tough." That incurred a tired sigh from the blonde woman. " Our AIs are a bit different, that's why they're allowed out in the world. They don't have deep learning capacity, much to our dismay. But it's all we could hope for in the meantime."
" How inconvenient." She said taking her mug to her lip only to grimace as soon as the liquid hit her tongue." It already got cold..."
She stood up, walking to a small microwave on the counter table by the door where she had deposited the mug to get heated. " I would never think you're a black coffee type."
" Jin's influence." She shrugged. " It really helps, when you don't overdose. Still, I would prefer to add milk. Back to the main point." Her tone became serious once more. " For how long do you think they would keep watch over every AI introduced to the world?"
Kousuke bit his lip, he would rather say 'until it felt safe', but he knew it was a lie. Humans liked to rule. They liked to have to control things, heck he did enjoy having to control people too thinking back to a certain incident years ago. That's why, as long as the threat of something overpowering them and taking over their throne existed, it was intolerable. They would stand against it with all their might not to allow it to happen at all costs.
" Pretty sure that means an awful lot of time." She stated cottoning on his silence. " It will be a long-"
It was so sudden and pretty quick as well. The microwave sizzled and its door flung outward, taking them by surprise. The lights flicked on and the laptop beeped before it displayed a blue screen.
Eva held on her head, feeling in a haze. Kousuke took a step closer to her when he saw her wincing." Are you alright?"
" It's alright. I'm fine." It went just as quickly as it came. Only a very uncertain, familiar sensation lingered at the back of her mind. She held on to it tightly, not wanting to let go of it.
" What just happened?" He said leaning down to inspect the microwave. " A short-circuiting, or a power surge..."
Eva peeked from her laptop, her face unfathomable. " The laptop is denying me access. It's as though it reset itself."
Her hand unconsciously reached to the side of her head. That wasn't missed by Kousuke." Are you sure you're okay?'
" I'm. It's just..." Her eyes, unfocused as they were, lingered on the large windows. " It felt somehow familiar, like a close warmth."...
The man was squatting down in front of the large screen, clutching the controller tight in his hands while smacking his fingers across the buttons. " Come on! I'm not giving in to you today!"
Unfortunately for him, his avatar was defeated in the end. With a groan of annoyance, he flopped back, sprawled on the ground.
" Judging by that pose, you got defeated by the final boss again." He reared his head a bit, looking up at the blunette woman who had walked into the house and laid down the groceries on the table. " What about studying?"
" I'm doing it, as a matter of fact." The blue-haired boy hoisted himself up and he was squatting again, controller back in hand. "I'm playing this game to study it."
" You know you're not fooling me with that." She walked over to him, giving him a nudge in the back with her knee. " You better take your studies seriously."
" I'm doing, Nee-chan. How do you expect me to code a video game unless I learn how they work." Hiro said without taking his eyes off the screen as he got prepared to start another round.
Mirai pursed her lips before going back to grab the groceries and store them in the kitchen. " Save my seat, I'm gonna show you exactly how two-player games work."
" You're welcome to try." He was feverishly typing on the controller again.
" Don't provoke me." As she opened the fridge, the lamp flicked and then went off. " What-"
" What's the- woah!" Hiro threw the controller away as it frizzled. The game bugged and the screen went black. All the electronic appliances around the house went crazy.
It took a moment for all of them to go back to normal. " What was that?" Mirai questioned while she went over to the TV.
" I'm not sure." Hiro turned the console on again. The game started, albeit from the very start. " All my saved data are lost!" Hiro cried out as he checked on his file. Mirai rolled her eyes at that.
" Either way, I wonder what was that? Some break out, or a short-circuiting?" Mirai wondered.
" I doubt so." Hiro stood up and walked around the house, checking other devices. " Everything seems to work but...is acting strange." He said pointing at the electronic clock on his bedstand. It was showing four 8.
" What could this mean?" Mirai tapped her chin with her finger, trying to wrap her head around what just happened...
