Author's Note: Well, hello there! Welcome back to The Ballad of Jocelyn. I'm your writer Bambi and I'm happy that you're here. Thank you to those of you who read chapter one! I really appreciate it. I was so nervous to write a story in this fandom because I love it so much but I'm happy I did. Anyway, as always, I do not/ have not/ probably, nor will I ever own the rights to Bob's Burgers or any of its characters, plots, and themes. Those belong to Loren Brushard and Disney/21st Century Fox. The headcanons are mine though. Now, onto chapter 2!
Ch. 2 The Time Jocelyn Wore Her Hair Down and Never Did It Again
Chapter Summary: A one shot about Jocelyn will never wear her hair down to school again.
It was Jocelyn's birthday, and she couldn't have been more excited. The weather was just right, her mom had made chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, she was bringing cupcakes to school to share with her friends, she had the cutest purple dress, and her mom was doing her hair and makeup before school.
"Jocelyn Sierra! Hurry up and eat, we gotta get you ready!" Her mom yells from upstairs.
"Coming!" Jocelyn exclaims before scarfing down the remainder of her pancakes.
"Bring your dress!" Her mom warned.
Jocelyn races to grab her new dress and the wedges that went with it. She walks into her mom's bathroom and sits at the vanity. Meanwhile, her mom quickly turned on a Bad Hair Day playlist and started helping Jocelyn get ready. First to go on is the dress. It's short and lavender with white butterflies all over it. Jocelyn had even bought a matching set of butterfly earrings and a necklace to go with it. Jocelyn's mom holds her arm gently while Jocelyn teeters in her wedges.
Jocelyn couldn't help but relish in this process. She rarely gets to spend time with her mom. It just made her birthday even better.
"Okay, Hun. Sit down and let's get some makeup on that pretty face." Her mom presses on.
Jocelyn is beaming as all types of powders, shadows, glosses, and glitters get applied to her face. Her mom steps back before handing her a hand mirror.
"Wellllll?" She asks in a sing-song voice.
"Omigawd! Mom, I love it!" Jocelyn replies excitedly. She barely even recognized herself.
"You're so pretty, sweetheart. Now, what should we do with this hair?" Her mom asks as she reaches out to free Jocelyn's hair from its perma-side pony.
"Uh we could just put it back up." Jocelyn shrugged. She's never worn her hair down before to school. It was wild and constantly got in her face. She just prefers to deal with it at home.
"Nuh uh. It's your birthday, Jocelyn. Step out of your box. It'll look so good!" Her mom urges. She's always loved Jocelyn's hair and thinks she should be prouder of it.
"I dunno." Jocelyn shakes her head.
"Trust me." Her mom sighs.
Jocelyn thought about it for a few minutes. Why not? "Okay." Jocelyn finally agrees. It takes about a half hour to get Jocelyn's curls just right.
"You're gorgeous." Her mom gasps with a proud look in her eye.
Jocelyn gives herself a once over. She had to admit, her mom was right. Her hair looked so bouncy and full of life. She loved it!
"We gotta go! Grab that little sweater, purse, and those sunglasses I bought you. I'll grab your cupcakes and your brother! Meet you in the car." Her mom urged.
Jocelyn grabs her things and goes to the car. She's on a real birthday buzz. Especially as her mom passes her the chocolate cupcakes, she ordered from Patty Cakes on Ocean Avenue. It's the best bakery in town. Jocelyn's mom gets her to school.
"Have a great day, baby! Don't forget I'm dropping lunch off to you!" Her mother reminded.
"Okay! Bye!" Jocelyn waved before her mom drove away. When Jocelyn was turned around to face Wagstaff, she's met with a lot of stares, gasps, glares, and some poor kid ran his bike into a tree. The last time Jocelyn got this many looks is when she hit her growth spurt in fifth. It was weird but Jocelyn didn't let that stop her. She plastered on a smile.
"Hey, Jocelyn!" "Happy birthday, Jocelyn." "Whoa. Hey, Jocelyn!" All she heard as she walked past.
"Hiiiie! Thank you!" She responded as she walked up the steps. That's when she comes face to face with Darryl who couldn't help but stare.
"What's up, Jocelyn?" Darryl asked.
"Hi, Darryl." Jocelyn replies with a small smile.
"You look really good. Purple's a nice color on you." He compliments, making her blush.
"Thanks." She thanked him softly.
"Can I get the door for you?" He offers.
Jocelyn's heart skips a beat, "Omigawd please!" She nods.
Darryl opens the door for her, and the pair walk inside.
"Have a good day, Jocelyn. Happy birthday." He wishes as he's about to walk away.
"Thanks, Darryl. Hey, you should totally come by my table at lunch. I'd like to give you a cupcake or something." Jocelyn shrugs nonchalantly, hoping he takes her up on his offer.
"I'll be there." He accepts.
"Yay!" She cheers before he goes to his locker. She couldn't wait for lunch.
Meanwhile, Tammy was holding court as she stood in the center of a group of kids modeling a new hat.
"Yeah, this hat cost two hundred dollars! My dad bought it for me! Hats are like soooo my thing now." Tammy bragged. That's when she heard another gasp from down the hall. Ugh! What was going on? That was the third gasp she's heard. Suddenly, the people that had been crowding around her were turning to look at the spectacle.
"Wait! Where are you guys going? I wanna talk about my hat more!" Tammy whined as the opening of the circle gave way to what the big deal was.
All Tammy saw was some new curly haired girl in a dress. Even so, what was so special? That's when the girl turned around. It was then that Tammy realized that wasn't a new girl at all. It was her "best friend" holding a box of cupcakes. A wave of jealousy surged through Tammy. How dare Jocelyn steal her thunder! And was she so dressed up? It wasn't fair! Tammy like invented Jocelyn. Before Tammy, Jocelyn was a background blonde doing Frond skits. She needed to respect the hotness hierarchy in their friendship. Tammy had to do something before people start thinking she's not the cool hot one.
"Hey, Tammy!" Jocelyn greeted her.
Tammy's face changes from jealous to great worry, "Omigawd, Jocelyn! What are you wearing? And why does your hair look like that?" Tammy whispers in fake concern.
"What do you mean? You don't like it?" Jocelyn asked nervously. She had been so excited about everything she forgot to ask Tammy.
"No, you look like a weird nature freak. I feel so bad for you right now, Jocelyn." Tammy shook her head.
"What do I do? I thought I looked nice. I just wanted to dress up for my birthday. My mom helped me pick it out." Jocelyn rambles, she thought she looked fine.
Tammy looked confused for a minute. Birthday? What? Looks like she forgot. Who cares? That wasn't the point right now.
"First of all, you should totally go wipe your face off. Like your makeup looks so bad and cakey. You should've called me. You should also go put your gym sneakers on. Those wedges make you look like sasquatch. Next time, call me. I'll help you out." Tammy explained with no remorse in her eyes.
"Oh okay! I'll go do that." Jocelyn nods her head fast, not thinking anything of it. Tammy was her best friend. She'd never lie to her.
"Here, I'll hold your cupcakes." Tammy offers, holding her arms out.
"Oh my god! Thank you so much, Tammy! You're such a good friend." Jocelyn tells her as she hands her the cupcakes.
When Jocelyn gets to the bathroom, she pulls her out her green scrunchie and ties her hair up in a high pony. She then grabs a paper towel and wets it to remove her makeup. That's when Tina Belcher walked in, hands covered in an unidentified green goopy substance.
"Oh hey, Jocelyn! Happy Birthday! You look nice." Tina complimented her.
"No, I don't, Tina! I look weird." Jocelyn scoffs.
"I don't think so. The glitter is pretty." Tina dismisses.
"No, it's not, Tina! And what's all that on your hands? It looks gross." Jocelyn asked.
Tina spreads her hands to show the expanding goop, "Louise put this weird Kuchi Kopi theme slime in my locker. Could you turn the water on for me? I'd do it myself but uh I'm caught in a slimy situation." Tina asked politely.
Jocelyn had been in the middle of wiping off her face, "Uh fine! Whatever." Jocelyn rolls her eyes before turning on the faucet.
"Thanks." Tina thanked her as Jocelyn went back to fixing herself. She finishes wiping off her makeup and slips on white low top sneakers.
Tina was just about to leave when she pulled something out of her backpack and heaved it on the counter next to Jocelyn's sink.
"What is that?" Jocelyn asks as she comes up from tying her sneakers.
"It's a scented candle my mom let me buy. It smells like kettle corn. Happy birthday, Jocelyn. I'll see you in Ms. Jacobson's class." Tina calls over her shoulder before she leaves.
Jocelyn picks up the candle and unwrapped it. It really smelled like Kettle corn! How cool of Tina. Jocelyn leaves the bathroom and gasps at the sight in front of her. Tammy had opened one of the cupcake boxes and had chocolate all over her face. And! She was giving one to Lenny Destefano!
"Tammy! What are you doing?" Jocelyn shouts.
"Jocelyn don't have a crap attack! There's a lot in this box." Tammy rolled her eyes.
Jocelyn had asked her mom to get a set of twelve cupcakes. Two for her, two for Tammy, two for Jimmy Jr, two for Zeke, two for Tina, and two for Darryl. There's three missing. Now Darryl doesn't get any and Tina only gets one.
"That's not cool, Tammy! You didn't even ask me!" Jocelyn sighed.
"I'm your best friend. I don't have to ask you." Tammy scoffed.
"Yes, you do! They're m-" Tammy cuts Jocelyn off.
"Ugh! I am so sick of hearing about your stupid birthday! We get it! Your birthday's today. You're old. The world doesn't revolve around you, Jocelyn." Tammy spat.
Jocelyn shrinks against Tammy's harsh words. She had no idea why Tammy was acting this way. She thought she'd be happier for her. "Sorry, Tammy." Jocelyn apologized.
"You should be. Now let's go to class." Tammy waved her on.
School goes on and much to Tammy's chagrin the Jocelyn compliments do not stop. Tammy needed to act fast. They were in Ms. Jacobson's class paired up with their science partners. Tammy didn't know what they were doing, but she did see pond water. All it took was one more compliment to Jocelyn from Susmita. Suddenly, Tammy "trips", leaving the test tube to fall on Jocelyn and her dress. Leaving a big brown wet stain. Jocelyn screamed as the semi cold water hit her body.
"Ew. Jocelyn's gross!" Tammy screams and points at Jocelyn.
Jocelyn didn't know what to do. She was frozen and embarrassed. Especially at the fact that it had been Tammy to do it. Tears start to well up in her eyes. She couldn't stay here. Jocelyn bolts out of the room and runs to the girl's restroom to hide in a stall. Fifteen minutes later, Tina walks in.
"Jocelyn?" Tina called out.
"Go away." Jocelyn sobbed.
"Ms. Jacobson wanted me to check up on you. I brought your stuff." Tina told her.
"I'm fine. Just leave it and go." Jocelyn urges.
"You sure? Cause you're crying a lot." Tina pointed out, trying to be as gentle as possible.
"I said I'm fine, Tina. Just go." Jocelyn begged.
Tina gets quiet. She doesn't want to leave Jocelyn like this, but knows she needs space. "Okay. If it helps anything, I think you deserve a better friend than Tammy. And I'm sorry she made you cry on your birthday." Tina apologized before setting Jocelyn's bag outside the stall and leaving.
Jocelyn gets off the floor and walks out of the stall. She grabs her phone out of her bag and calls her mom. Tina's words play over and over again in her head. Maybe Tina was right. Her mom comes and brings her home. Jocelyn spends the rest of her birthday hulled up in her room. Until about seven o'clock when there's a knock on the door.
"Jocelyn! Your friends are here!" Her mom yells.
Friends? That's weird, Jocelyn wasn't expecting anybody. She also didn't want to see anybody. She walks downstairs to see who it is. Standing near the door was Zeke, Tina, Jimmy Jr, and Darryl. She was confused. Why are they here?
"Hi, Jocelyn." Tina waved.
"What are you guys doing here?" Jocelyn asked.
"We felt really bad about what happened at school. So, Tina got us all together to celebrate your birthday." Zeke explained.
"Yeah! We got some cheesecake from my dad's restaurant and your favorite Mary Kate & Ashley movie if you wanna." Jimmy Jr suggested.
"I dunno you guys. I kinda just wanna be alone." Jocelyn shrugged.
Darryl is the one to step up, "Come on, Jocelyn. We know it's been a bad day but let us make it up to you." Darryl begged.
Jocelyn thought about it for a minute. This was a nice gesture and they had gone through all this trouble. Why not enjoy the last minutes of her birthday? "Okay, fine. Come on up." Jocelyn invites them all up to her room.
As bad as the day was, Jocelyn had a great night. Made even better by Darryl kissing her on the cheek before he left. After that day, Jocelyn decided she didn't want problems with Tammy and never wore her hair down again.
A/N: Thank you all for reading this very long and at times sad one shot. I hope you enjoyed it. I'll see you next time! Bye guys!
