Now starting a new arc, which may last three to four chapters, detailing my version of Dawn, as the main protagonist of a Sinnoh-inspired adventure, and she'll be both a battler and a Coordinator.
In the region of a Sinnoh, the tale of a couple of young trainers was about to begin. The native region's Professor, Rowan, looked at a couple of kids. "You two kids really tried to get into the grass with Wild Pokémon without one of your own?"
"He tried to, I followed along to try and stop him." A young blue haired girl called Dawn Berlitz noted.
"Hey, it sounded like a good idea. If we ran through it fast enough we would have avoided wild Pokémon." Dawn's hyper friend, Barry Palmer, defended himself.
"Or tripped over a Bidoof." Dawn scoffed. Barry took it in stride though.
Rowan looked at them sternly. "If you are going to go out in the world at least you should have a Pokémon. Lucas?"
Lucas Brilliante, Rowan's assistant, holding the prof's suitcase. "These two? Really? After the stunt they pulled?"
"Having a Pokémon is a responsibility, and they need to learn responsibility. I have seen trainers less responsible then them whom had grown over their journey into good people. Besides, they would have gotten their starter at one point so why not do it now?" Rowan said. "But before I do, you two really love Pokémon, right?"
"More then life itself." Dawn noted.
"Of course we do. Ask us a hundred, a thousand times, we will say yes!" Barry said.
"And what do you want in life?" Rowan said.
"I want to become strong, like my Dad, Henry Palmer of the Battle Frontier. I look up to him and I want to follow in his footsteps." Barry added.
"Me too. I want to become a strong trainer. I also want to become a skilled coordinator. Like my Father and mother respectively." Dawn noted.
"Two goals…you think you can handle that?" Rowan asked.
"I was never afraid of a bit of hard work." Dawn replied.
"I remember someone whom used to say the same…wait, Berlitz. Ingo and Emmet Berlitz?" Rowan asked.
"Yeah, my dad and Uncle." Dawn explained.
"I remember them. Good fellows. Bit odd, weird obsession with subways. What are they up to nowadays?" Rowan asked.
"Oh they work in Unova to set up their own Battle Frontier, the Battle Subway. It's a busy season so they aren't around but they should be able to be back in time to see me break through in the Grand Festival and Sinnoh League." Dawn explained.
"Subways, of course…" Rowan sighed. "And that is if you break through."
"When I break through." Dawn insisted.
"Quite confident, are you?" Rowan noted.
"Like I said, I am not afraid of a bit of hard work. And hard work will pay off." Dawn said.
"I can work hard too." Barry noted.
"But you also have to work smarter." Rowan notes.
"I can do both." Dawn says.
"Me too." Barry noted.
"Barry, your initial plan was going into the grass Leroy Jenkins style." Dawn said.
"And I thought a lot about it." Barry insisted, being genuinely serious.
"I think this is a mistake, Professor." Lucas noted.
"Maybe. But it's fun to watch." Rowan said. "Now, open the damn suitcase." Lucas did as they were told. A whole bunch of Pokéballs, some with a flame symbol, some with the water drop symbol and some with a leaf symbol, were inside.
"Have you decided which ones to pick?" Rowan asked.
"I did, I want a Piplup." Dawn said as she took one of the Pokéballs with the water drop.
"So do I!" Barry noted.
"Good choices. Any reason in particular?" Rowan asked.
"Piplup are both cute and gutsy, and Empoleon are both regal and strong. They do well in both contests and gym battles." Dawn said.
"I just like penguins!" Barry added. "Say, Dawn…how about we let them out?"
"First good idea you had today." Dawn noted. Both of them threw the Pokéballs and the two Piplups came out.
The one with Barry had its flippers crossed and looked at Barry. And then it started to stamp its flipper feet and waved its flipper arms. "Oh, he's feisty, I like it." Barry imitated the Piplup's movements, or maybe it was Barry being Barry as he usually flayed around as well.
They were so in synch Lucas sighed. "Great, two of them."
Dawn in the meanwhile looked at her Piplup whom just stood tall and proud. "Hi there. You're a little cutie. I am your new trainer, Dawn." Dawn said. The Piplup barely budged but studied Dawn. "I have Poffins." Dawn said as she pulled out one of her home made Poffins, which the Piplup studied. It then took it and nibbled. Then it devoured it rapidly and started chirping happily.
"I see the Piplups have taken a shine to you two rather quickly. Any idea what to name them?"
"Mine will be named Break, because we're breaking through in the circuit of Trainers and break any obstacle." Barry said.
"Typical of Barry." Dawn said with a fond smile, but she rolled her eyes still. "Anyhow, I'll name mine Ozzy. Just cause it's cute." Dawn said. "Is that ok, little fella." The Piplup tried to stand up proudly and give the air as if he 'accepts it'. Though hard to take him seriously with Poffin crumbs all over his beak.
"Let's see how strong our Piplups out! Let's fight. You ready for a fight, Break?" Barry suggested as he pumped his fists, while Break imitated him.
"Sure, why not? Ready, Ozzy?" Dawn suggested. Ozzy chirped and readied himself, but carried himself way more dignified then Break.
"Five PokéDollars on the girl." Lucas whispered to the Professor.
"As your mentor I have to admonish you for betting on the young new trainers." Rowan noted. "Now that fulfilled that responsibility, I'm not taking a sucker's bet."
"Break, Pound!" Barry said as he pointed at Ozzy. Break charged in and flailed his flippers.
"Keep your distance, Ozzy." Dawn noted. Ozzy had his flipper arms behind him and dodged the clumsy and wild flailing of his fellow Piplup. "Steady…Wait for it…and Pound back!" Ozzy dodged another Pound, with Break nearly tripping; Ozzy then struck back with a slap of his flipper of his own, striking Break and make him stumble back.
"Oh, tough guy?" Barry said. "You have two flippers. Strike with both at the same time." Barry suggested. Break flailed both his flippers wildly. He also tried all sort of tricks. Spin them like a pinwheel, slapping them together with Ozzy in between, and even Pounding overhead, only to hit the ground.
"Keep going like before Ozzy." Dawn said as she and her Piplup still played it smarter, letting Break flail around while they dodged. "Almost…now, Pound high." Break, as he had slammed his flippers into the ground, was now at the level with Ozzy's flipper, getting smacked in the face. "Pound low!" as he was reeling back, Break's feet were knocked off the ground and made to trip as they were smacked by Ozzy. "Pound again!" another Pound on Break before he hit the ground and he was knocked on his back.
"Whoa…dang, that was well done, Dawn." Barry said, being a good sport about it.
"Just like with the grass, you rushed in. I just waited and struck." Dawn said. "Or me and Ozzy." Dawn said as she pats her Piplup's head.
"If it isn't broke, don't fix it!" Barry said.
"You lost." Lucas reminded him.
"Few win their first Pokémon fight. I just have to perfect my technique." Barry said.
"Your perfect technique of charging in, but that won't…" Lucas said, obviously fed up with Barry's pig-headedness.
"Don't bother, Barry is just being Barry." Dawn said.
"Now, that was a nice battle of you two. You show potential. Some more then others…" Rowan said as he eyed Dawn and gave a raised eyebrow towards an unaware Barry. "Anyhow…"
"Thanks for the Pokémon, journey starts. Bet I'll get to Oreburgh first!" Barry said as he recalled Break and rushed off.
"…and he skedaddled before I could give him a Pokédex." Rowan facepalmed.
"I still wasn't able to give him the Town Map his mom asked me to bring him because he rushed off without that too." Dawn noted.
"Don't give him a Dex, knowing him he may break it, lose it in a hurry and be too impatient to complete it." Lucas noted.
"Won't deny that. Now, what was that about a Pokédex?" Dawn asked.

Ozzy charged in at a Turtwig. His head lowered to extend his beak. The Turtwig fired Razor Leafs, but Ozzy slid on his belly to avoid it, jumped back up and slammed his beak into the Turtwig, whom flinched. He kept using Peck for a bit until the Turtwig opened his mouth. Ozzy stepped back far enough to prevent his face being bit off but he got his flipper. Ozzy chirped loudly in pain, as Turtwig held on. The twigs on his head glowed. Ready for another Razor Leaf. However, if he was stuck, Ozzy was making the best of it and kept pecking Turtwig's face as it charged up. As the Turtwig finally fired its next Razor Leaf, it hit Ozzy dead on, but Ozzy's final Peck also got him, and they were both knocked out.
The purple haired boy just recalled his Turtwig, without a physical reaction on his face. "I guess that is a tie. I should be mildly impressed due to the type advantage. Though I wonder if this may have been a fluke."
"What about me?" Barry noted. He had been fighting and defeated by Paul earlier.
"What about you?" Paul asked. This deflated Barry a bit.
"Your battle prowess are the only thing I can call positive about you." Dawn snarked. "A bit more grace in defeat would make sure your face isn't permanently stuck in 'resting bitch'."
"Oh, need a Burn Heal for that one!" An enthusiastic Barry said as he pointed at Paul. Whom glared at him and Barry stepped back nervously.
"Anyhow, you were the only one since I came back to Sinnoh whom has come close to being a remote challenge. But I wonder if you can keep that up. With certain distractions on frivolities like those Contests, I fear you may not get stronger." Paul said.
"Oh I will get stronger. And more fabulous." Dawn said as she flipped her hair. "I'm kicking ass and look good doing it."
"You think you can handle that responsibility? Dividing your time between the training and the useless dance routines?" Paul asked.
"They are not useless." Dawn noted. "They awe, they inspire, they show a different side of Pokémon. While fighting with them is the most well known activity with Pokémon, there is much more to them. They are a part of nature, a circle of life and keeping an ecosystem afloat. They are companions. They are workers. They can be protectors. So I find myself limiting myself to one thing with Pokémon…that would be wasting potential."
"What about professional trainers? Gym Leaders, Elite…" Paul noted.
"They also have other jobs on the side. They never let their Passion for Pokémon hold them back from pursuing other passions." Dawn noted.
Paul didn't say out loud but he found Dawn having a point in that regard. "Well, don't let it hold you back. Because we'll be running into each other again and there will be other tests of strength. Because I will not hold back."
"Believe me, I won't either. Though don't be as harsh on your Pokémon. You don't seem to understand their limits. If you push them too hard, they may get truly hurt. And not the fighting damage they normally get. No, they may end up with something serious." Dawn replied.
"If they can't handle the training, then they're weak and not worth holding on to." Paul said.
"No Pokémon is weak. There is just a different way for each Pokémon to realize their potential." Dawn said. "Don't pretend your way is the only way."
"It's the only way that matters." Paul said. "And if you really want to prove your mettle, if you want to prove your ideals, prove it in future encounters we may have. And for your sake, don't let any useless sentiments to drag you down. Think of the roster…and the company you keep."
"Hey, you got something to say, you grape? I may not have won, but I gave it good against you earlier!" Barry growled.
"Oh please, you were hardly a challenge. You have power, but no way to properly channel. A person claiming themselves strong without a way to use that strength is not truly strong, just another weakling." Paul said.
"My fist in your face is not going to feel weak." Barry said, but Dawn put her hand on his shoulder, calming him down and holding him back.
Paul wasn't impressed in the least. "I have better things to do. Stronger Pokémon to seek out. Until we see again, Dawn Berlitz." With that the purple haired boy left.
"What a Mudbray (1)." Dawn muttered.
"Yeah, he didn't acknowledge me at the end." Barry pouted. "Next time you see him, kick his ass harder."
"He is right in some regards, but he is being a dick about it. I claim that I can be a great trainer and coordinator, but I have to make sure I excel at both to prove myself. And he is right in that you have skill and strength but that you just rush in. Sometimes you have to slow down and observe." Dawn said.
"Well…I know I have that problem." Barry admitted. "At least you told me respectfully. But I don't like the guy's face!"
"Also, I can finally give you the Town Map, you keep rushing off before I can give it to you." Dawn said.
"My bad!" Barry said, a sweatdrop visible by his head as he scratched the back of his neck. "If it's worth anything though, I think you can handle anything you set your mind to. I've known you in forever, and you always put everything in it when you make a goal. I know you will prove that purple-haired ninny wrong."
"Thanks Barry. You're a real pal." Dawn said.
"Thanks for the Map. I'm sorry I have to rush again but I'm feeling puckish and I'd rather indulge at the Pokécenter Cafetaria in Oreburgh then more canned foods." Barry noted.
"I won't blame you for that one." Dawn answered.

Dawn had taken the stage in her first contest. She and Ozzy were now starting their routine. "Just like we practiced, Ozzy. First, the Whirlpool!" Dawn said. Ozzy created a swirling mass of water above him. "Now the Peck!" He stuck out his beak and the whirlpool formed around it. Now it inversed, being upside down and looking more like a watery drill sticking out of his face. "The Bubble…" Dawn continued. Bubbles formed inside the drill, and they started to stick out the top…and then travel in a spiral pattern across the drill, downwards, creating a nice display, like Christmas lights on a fancy tree. "Now make it rain!" Dawn said. The watery drill dispersed, the bubbles went flying, and the water came down in ways that created a beautiful rain effect. Under the lighting the room it formed a rainbow, like she planned.
The crowd cheered at the display and Dawn saw her points filling up. And they had reached beyond the minimum that was required to qualify for the next round. Dawn was happy that she could go through to the next round. Her first contest and it started off great. She was happy.
"Well I admit, that it was a pretty show you put up." Zoey said as Dawn came back into the locker rooms. "I admit, when you said you would be able to pull off being both a trainer and coordinator, I didn't think you'd actually do it."
"You called it 'being indecisive'." Dawn reminded her.
"I was wrong, sue me." Zoey said. "Well, you do realize this means I expect you to not only do as well but even better with the next few appeals? It would sadden me to see you as a one hit wonder."
"I'm far from it." Dawn said. "Your appeal was great too, by the way. I'll work hard to top that in the next few rounds."
"You got spark. I like that. I think I found myself a friend/rival." Zoey said.
"Well happy to be your friend/rival too." Dawn noted.
"You got something. Other people whom tried to do more things at once…they fell flat. But you…I may start to believe you are going to make it happen. But I expect great things for you. At the end of this…you better qualify for Contest finals at least, and you better defeat some of the Elites at minimum. And I hope…that in those finals I can be the one to face you."
"I hope to face you then too. Easier to get into it if it is a friendly face." Dawn noted.
"You're on." Zoey reached out her hand. Dawn took it and they shook. Though they didn't let go right away. "Your hands are soft."
"Thanks, I have good hand moisturizer." Dawn noted. They stood there for a few moments. "Er…we should let go."
"Yeah, right…how silly of us." Zoey said as they let go of each other's hands. With a slight blush. "Er…good game, Dawn…yeah."
"Hey Dawn, congratulating my bestie on a good performance." Barry said as he came rushing into the room.
"Thank you Mr. Awkward Moment Killer. Gonna prepare myself for the next round. See ya Dawn, bye!" Zoey said she rushed off.
"Whoa, is that wat it looks like to you when I do it?" Barry asked.
"Kinda." Dawn said, half heartedly as half her mind was still with the pretty redhead whom declared herself Dawn's friend/rival.

"Valerie, you're up next!" Dawn was in her gym battle with Roark, and she had pulled out her Shinx. As Shinx came in, it mewled softly as its eyes glowed and Intimidate set in.
"Headstrong, Headbutt!" Roark commanded his Cranidos. The little Pachycephalosaur-like Pokémon charged in at great speed.
"Valerie, return!" Dawn recalled Valerie before she was hit. "Brisen!" Dawn said as she summoned her Staravia. Its eyes glowed and Intimidate hit Cranidos again.
"Stealth Rock!" Roark said as the Cranidos roared, stomped the ground and several rocks shot from the ground in the rocky terrain, floated in the air and turned invisible.
"Brisen, Quick Attack!" Dawn ordered as the Staravia rammed into it, but it barely flinched. "Now Return! Back to you, Valerie!" Dawn summoned the little Shinx again but this time the invisible rocks became visible and slammed into her. "Valerie!"
"Neat little trick, Stealth Rock. I see what you do with the Intimidate switch technique." Roark said.
"You caught on, but your Cranidos' attack is pretty low, and my Piplup is still at full strength. Ozzy, your turn!" Dawn's Piplup came out of his Pokéball. The Stealth Rocks became visible. "Bubble Counter Shield!" Then Piplup starts to spin around, breakdance style, as it flung bubbles around, pushing the Stealth Rocks back.
"Clever, but your Piplup can't focus on both the rocks and my Cranidos. Headstrong, Headbutt!" Roark ordered his Cranidos to charge in.
"Gotcha…" Dawn said softly. "Ozzy, Bubble upwards."
"Bubble what?" Roark asked. Piplup broke off the Counter Shield and aimed the bubbles downwards to propel himself up, the Stealth rocks closing in…missing Ozzy but Headstrong charged in its path and got hit by them instead. "Headstrong!"
"Now, once more Bubble…with a bit more oomph!" Dawn said. Ozzy shot more Bubble at the weakened Cranidos whom was hit by the attack and then fell down, his eyes spirals.
"Cranidos is unable to battle! The winner is Dawn Berlitz!" the referee said.
"Clever trick, girl. And with a Contest move no less." Roark said. "There is something to be learned from different brands of Pokémon keeping. You earned the Coal Badge and the TM for Stealth Rock. Also, you can use Rock Smash. The HM is replaced by TM's and a Pokétch App now."
"Good thing, didn't want that to take up a move slot. Oh and thanks for the Badge and TM." Dawn said as she took her prize in hand. "One Ribbon, and one Badge. A milestone in both my goals. Four more Ribbons and seven more Badges, and I'll be going up against the Elite." Dawn said. She turned to her Pokémon. "And I couldn't have done it without you guys. I am proud of all of you. Ozzy chirped, and so did Brisen, and Valerie let out a happy mewl.

"Galactic Duo member, Venus!" a Team Galactic Goon said, differed from the other goons by her pink hair and accents on her suit, and the symbol of Planet Venus on her jacket.
"Galactic Duo Member, Mercury!" another Team Galactic Member said, but his hair was silver. Not just grey colored, it was shiny and silvery and so were the accents on his suit.
"And we are Team Galactic's Galactic Duo Sigma!" they posed together in a very toku-like way.
Lucas and Dawn looked at each other confused…and then burst out in laughter. "Oh my Arceus. They look ridiculous." Lucas said.
"I'd say they ran away from Comicon but I can't think of a franchise that has such badly dressed characters to cosplay at." Dawn added and they doubled down on their laughter.
Venus sighed. "Are you done?"
Lucas and Dawn's laughter died down…and they start laughing all over again, even harder.
Mercury sighed. "Why did we take this job with the dumb outfits?"
"For me it was either that or the Pokémart. And I gladly take being laughed at over entitled middle aged woman whom want to talk to my manager." Venus said.
"Oh, you mean the K-no, that's not right, that'd be an insult to the Dark-Type Elite Four of Johto. She's pretty great." Mercury said.
"Anyhow, we have to pay the bills so…will you two snot-nosed brats stop laughing and let us steal your Pokémon?" Venus said.
"Er…no!" Both Dawn and Lucas said simultaneously.
"Want to have your first multi-battle?" Lucas said.
"I'd love that." Dawn said. "Go, Ozzy!"
"Go, Tank!" Lucas said as he summoned his own Turtwig which was smaller then Paul's.
Venus summoned a Yanma and Mercury summoned Carnivine. Ozzy jumped up and extended his beak, slamming into the Yanma as it was knocked out of the air. Tank the Turtwig tackled it before it hit the ground, and knocked the Yanma in the Carnivine's gaping maw. And it was stuck as the two Pokémon tried to untangle. Then Tank and Ozzy Tackle/Peck'd them and knocked them down.
"You're not very good at this." Dawn noted.
"We know…" Venus and Mercury said sadly.
"Kids, what is going on here?" Professor Rowan arrived onto the scene. "And why do these two have such garish outfits?"
"Ugh…I miss the Oreburgh mines." Mercury sighed.

"So…He just released him?" Barry had caught up to Dawn again. His own Staravia Longcrest, Roselia Jaime and now Prinplup Break were out of the Pokéballs and were eating their Pokémon food.
"Yeah…" Dawn said sadly. "It is typical Paul. The little fella didn't live up to his standards, and he gets abandoned. Poor thing." Ozzy (still a Piplup), Brisen and Valerie (now a Luxio) were also eating. But the Chimchar was a bit to the wayside, not out of sight but not close. It looked scared and uncertain. "I couldn't leave him behind. But…he is still scared. Paul did a number on his psyche."
"He also hasn't touched his food." Barry said.
"I let him eat at his own pace." Dawn said. She turned to the Chimchar "Take all the time you need, little guy. No worries, no one is going to take it away." The little fiery monkey still stared at his bowl. Then at Dawn. Dawn smiled, bright-eyed at her. He slowly reached out with his hand towards the bowl. He pulled back, but then he stretched it out again and took a handful. And put it in his mouth. And another. And another, and was now devouring it quickly.
"Looks like he hasn't eaten anything good in a while." Barry said.
"I saw what Paul feeds his mons. It may have had the nutrients but wasn't very appetizing." Dawn said.
"Paul's face is slowly looking more punch-able in my head." Barry said.
"He sure is." Dawn said. The Chimchar had finished its bowl. It tried to grab inside, but there was no more. He lifted it to shake it, to see if more came. Dawn grabbed another can from her backpack. "If you're still hungry, I can give you more." The Chimchar twitched and dropped the bowl. He wrapped his arms around himself. "No worries, you're a growing fire chimp. You need it. And I have enough spare cans…can never be too careful." Dawn said as she opened the can. The Chimchar looked at her, dewy-eyed. He grabbed the bowl again and held it out for her to fill it up. "There, that's a good boy."
The Chimchar put a few more handfuls in his mouth and then the Chimchar broke out in tears, letting out his little monkey screeches. "It's ok, little guy. It's ok." Dawn said as she reached out her hand. "You're ok now." The Chimchar looked at her. And then jumped at her, and clung to her like a baby monkey to her mother. Dawn rubbed its back as it cried. "You're one of us now, little guy. We will watch over you. Protect you. You can be whom you want to be. A fighter, a dancer, or neither. But always part of the team."
The Chimchar looked around and saw the other Pokémon on Dawn's team had approached him and looked at him in a friendly way, trying to appear welcoming. "Oh, we haven't given you a name yet, right? Let me think…" Dawn pondered for a bit. "Oh, how about Kentaro?" The Chimchar looked at her for a bit. Before he smiled and nodded. "Kentaro it is then. You're part of the team now." Chimchar returned to clinging on to her and hugging her.
Dawn heard some sniffing. "Barry…?"
"I'm not crying, you're crying!"
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Dawn's journey would continue. She would grow stronger, more skilled.
We see images and clips. Dawn captures a Pachirisu. Dawn puts Honey on a Honey Tree…and an Aipom jumped out and ran off with her hat. She caught up and caught it.
We see another contest, the Pachirisu using Double Team and Spark to turn in a trio of electric balls which Aipom juggled with her hands and tail, while Dawn did a juggling act with a trio of normal balls, in synch with her mons. We see an image of Dawn holding up her second Ribbon. She is seen talking to Zoey, and they laugh. Before they look at each other, blush and look in opposite directions.
Dawn is seen catching a Buizel. Then the same Buizel, alongside a Chansey against a wild Beautifly and Buneary. The Buneary is knocked down by an Aqua Jet and caught by Dawn in a Heal Ball. Cheryl's Chansey knocked the Beautifly out of the air with an Egg Bomb and is caught in a Pokéball as well.
Dawn's new Chimchar, Kentaro uses Flame Wheel and charged into Mars' Purugly, whom held it back with her massive front paws. But the flaming ball grew bigger and bigger as the Purugly was pushed back. The flames died down and Kentaro was a Monferno and launched a Mach Punch, knocking down the Purugly as Mars looked on, slightly worried.
Kentaro used Flame Wheel to knock down Gardenia's Roserade, knocking it out. Gardenia clapped happily in joy as she pulled out her badge, and a green TM. Dawn held up her prizes as her Pokémon jumped in joy with her, for her victory.
Dawn stepped out of the gym, as she was eyed from a distance by a blonde woman in black clothes, whom was enjoying her ice cream. But intrigued by the young heroine…
Basically Dawn calling Paul a jackass.
NOTES
Anyhow, hope you enjoy part one of the Dawn arc in this.
Dawn is the protagonist, so she'll be building up two teams, one for combat and one for contests, though some overlap is expected. Once again Pokémon nicknames I give are based on nicknames I gave said species of Pokémon in my own runs or what I would give them if I ever used them. So she'll have mons both she and Ash used in the Diamond/Pearl anime and a few extras.
Yes, I'm a huge shipper of Dawn and Zoey. I ask to myself, am I making too much cute lez couples. And then I remind myself there can never be enough cute lez couples. XD
Anyhow, hope you enjoy this new chapter.
