Wasabi's birthday episode came out on September 22 and I've made a little tradition of writing him a corresponding birthday fic. This year I thought it would be fun to write about him and Kwan-Sun, who is one of the members of 4 2 Sing. I have several fics with them including "I'd Rather Dance With You" and "Money Does Grow On Trees." My other Wasabi Birthday fics are "Periodically," "23 Candles and a Turtle," and "Lopsided Birthday Cake."
In the fic I use my fan name for Wasabi, Wesley, bc I doubt he uses Wasabi with everyone all the time.
At this point in their relationship Kwan-Sun knew his boyfriend well enough to know Wesley didn't really like surprises. So when it came time to celebrate Wes's birthday, Kwan-Sun surprised him by letting Wes plan the whole thing.
This was both a relief and a delight to Wes, who had spent too much of his life doing what other people wanted for his birthday. A childhood of laser tag and cheap pizza had eaten away at him but finally his day was actually going to be about him.
First, he called his boss to schedule a vacation day on his birthday, and then he started planning.
"I would like to sleep in a little, and then do brunch with whichever of my friends are available."
"Done. Where would you like to have brunch?" Kwan-Sun was very excited about making Wes's birthday dreams come true.
"How about that little Parisian place?"
"I'll invite the others and get us a reservation. What else?"
Wes hesitated. "I don't want to be greedy…"
Kwan-Sun reached out and took Wes's hand. "Let's do a thought experiment."
"Okay."
"Pretend your boyfriend is a world famous K-Pop idol and that money is no object. What would you want to do if that was the case?"
"Okay, point taken," Wes said with an embarrassed laugh. He was still getting used to Kwan-Sun's rich and famous lifestyle. He'd been raised -or rather fearmongered- to believe that money was a scarce privilege that he did not deserve unless he was doing the most all of the time.
It was a relief to have his needs met more easily now that he was dating a popstar, but it was hard to unlearn his ill-gotten beliefs. Especially when Kwan-Sun tried to take care of his wants as well as his needs.
"It's not greedy to want things, Wesley. You know that, right?"
"Of course. It's just asking for those things that's hard." He shrugged it off like it was nothing, but it wasn't nothing to Kwan-Sun.
"Your parents are dicks who don't get any say over you or how you spend your birthday. But it's okay if we start small and work our way up to your bigger dreams. What's one thing you'd like to do?"
Wesley closed his eyes and hummed, thinking about it for a while.
"I've always kind of wanted to go to a spa," he finally mentioned.
Kwan-Sun beamed. "Perfect! You deserve to be pampered. Let's look up spas in the area and we can decide which treatments you want."
"I'd be happy to do anything with you," Wesley said.
"As far as I'm concerned, we can do anything."
"I don't think I want to do everything. Though I do want to do one last thing," Wesley said thoughtfully.
"Yes?"
"I think I want to go get pizza with my brothers for dinner. For old time's sake."
It was true he was tired of cheap pizza and laser tag, but he would never be tired of Khary and Damon. So maybe it was time to make his own traditions with the people he loved.
"Sounds perfect."
Wesley beamed and picked Kwan-Sun up in a hug, twirling him around until they were both grinning and laughing.
"Thank you for letting me plan this."
"Of course, it's your day."
It had never felt like his day before.
"Still, it means a lot to me."
Kwan-Sun smiled, satisfied. "You know, if I didn't know better, I'd think you're more excited about planning your birthday than you are about your actual birthday."
Wes laughed. "Well now I have a reason to be excited about my birthday. And that's all because of you."
Sorry not sorry that I didn't write the actual birthday stuff. Please consider that I did not want to lol.
