"So you assaulted several of the hospital staff without question? Because Eri told you to?" Tenya Ida, aka Ingenum, asked while sitting across from a handcuffed Kyoka.
"That would be correct, and it was the right call. He was going to die." Kyoka said. "If we had done everything right and waited for approval, he would have died on that table." She looked at her hands. "You and I know that the world is not ready for him to go….and neither am I." the last part was barely whispered.
"I missed the last part," he said.
"It's not important," she smiled at him. "It is good to see you, Tenya."
"As it is you, the last time was at the concert in Berlin." He said, smiling. "Sorry to hear about your divorce."
"Thank you. It is fine. Life is moving on; we were having a lot of trouble, so it is better this way." She responded.
"Do you know why your ex-husband was in the country? Was he looking to reconcile, or had he reached out to you in any fashion?" Tenya said, going back to hero mode.
"No, I didn't even know he was in the country till the battle report." She paused, thinking about it. "I haven't had a chance to check on him with the whole," she held up her cuffs. "Is he ok?"
"He was shot twice, once in the shoulder and the other in his arm. Though painful, the wounds are not life-threatening; he is in surgery to remove the fragments and is expected to recover fully," Tenya added. "As for you, it will be up to the hospital to decide if they want to press charges due to the extenuating circumstances of the matter; we will see what we can work with."
-Eri and Izuku-
"Seriously, Dad, We almost lost you." She said she snuggled into his side.
"It wasn't on the agenda; I have to be there to walk you down the aisle. And spoil grandkids." He held her close. "Are you sure Mom doesn't want to talk to me?"
"She said, and I quote, "That as soon as they are done moping up the last of the Professor's goons, she will be here expeditiously to address the matter herself." End quote." Eri said, her eyes closed. "I think you scared her. I know you scared Aunty and me if we were any later... then." Her tears began to leak out.
"I am sorry, sweetie," he whispered. " I won't let it happen again. Thankfully, you were here to save me."
"Does this mean I can have a Corvette when I get my license?" she said, smiling up at him.
"I don't know about that."
"It's okay. Mom will buy me one." She said, hugging him tighter.
-Momo-
She was a picture of calm as she exited her vehicle. She had an absolute image of serenity as she walked through the hospital past the layers of security. The definition of tranquility as she spoke to the doctor outside room 009. She nodded as the doctor handed her a pass to access the room; the door opened with a simple swipe of the badge. There in the room was her daughter snuggled up to her fiancé.
Her daughter took one look at her mother and scrambled off the bed to the side; her fiancé grimaced some before saying. "Hi, Baby."
"Izuku Midoriya," she said as she glided towards the bed. "Is there a reason you flew off at supersonic speeds to respond to an emergency phone call from Chargebolt without calling for immediate backup?"
"I…um…no," he said.
"Eri, I will talk with you in a minute. Would you mind waiting outside?" Her daughter nodded, wished her father good luck, and promptly abandoned him.
Momo walked over and sat on the bed next to him as the tears formed in the corner of her eyes. "I almost lost you," she whispered. "I was going to send Eri home, but when she asked to come for some reason, I said yes, knowing it may be an active battle zone. You wouldn't be here now if I hadn't made that mistake."
"I am sorry, Momo," he said. "I wasn't expecting Nomu, let alone High-Ends, and that Monstrosity was nothing I had never seen before."
"Sorry isn't enough today, Izuku," she said, leaning down and hugging him as her tears began to fall. "I need you to think about more than saving someone; I need you to think about Eri, Me, and you. I know the risks involved in our chosen profession, but we haven't even started our lives together, and I almost lost you. I cannot lose you." She just let the tears fall as he held her.
He had always rushed in, especially when someone was in danger, such as when one of his friends were in trouble. He and Denki hadn't spoken in a long time, but he occasionally responded to Izuku; he had called when his mom had passed. Denki had been closer to others in the class, but Izuku had kept his distance because of his feelings for Kyoka.
"I will do better, Momo," he whispered. "I will always come home to you, Eri, and our children."
"I will hold you to that," she responded as she cuddled next to him, both of them losing themselves in each other's arms for a bit before they brought Eri back in, and they all just cuddled together.
-Kyoka-
Kyoka walked out of the director of the hospital's office feeling relieved that she would not be prosecuted, but she would do some PSAs and perform for a children's benefit. She was more than happy to comply even without them declining to prosecute.
The crux was Eri saving Izuku; he crashed on the table, and there wasn't much that could have been done. Revealing that Eri was Izuku's adoptive daughter; the nature of her quirk had put everything in place. The doctor also agreed that had they gone through the proper channels, Izuku would have died. It was a sad thought for Kyoka; she could only imagine what Momo was going through.
She didn't want to intrude as she knew Momo was in the room with Izuku. Instead, her mind was drawn to the question that Tenya had asked.
Why didn't he call me? I haven't changed my number. We hadn't seen each other since the divorce. He was there when I came to move my belongings out of the house. I thought we had a good conversation that day, but maybe I was wrong.
She reached out to his friends, Sero and Mineta, but hadn't heard anything. Their friends across the ocean didn't even know that he was gone. They hadn't heard from him in weeks. Kyoka nibbled on her thumb before she took a deep breath and called his parents.
His mom answered, happy to hear from Kyoka; they were en route to the hospital. His mother let slip that they had talked to him briefly, but he told them they didn't need to come. She had expressed that she hoped Denki would return to Japan to stay or try to win Kyoka back. They had kept the details of their separation quiet, so Kyoka did her best to dismiss the notion.
She took a deep breath and reached out to his manager; Rico was happy to take her call, hoping she would come back and sign with him. It took a little bit, but he didn't know why Denki was in Japan; in fact, Denki had been dodging his phone calls.
Why was he in the country? No one he normally talked to knew he was here; no one back home knew he was here. He is here and gets into some trouble, but he calls Izuku. Izuku is the number one hero, but why would Denki call him? He wasn't even based in Tokyo. Mt. Lady and Kami Woods had taken over Edgeshot's agency after he passed. They were based in Tokyo. He didn't call Izuku's cell phone; Izuku didn't have it, and Denki had called the agency directly. Calling the number one Heroes agency and navigating through the routing system to get to Christy and then to Izuku would take time. If you are running from a gang of criminals, why would you do all that and not just dial the hero network and call in for help? They all had that number; while he may not be licensed in Japan, his Hero Identification would still be registered. Denki was friends with Manga and Rikido, who were stationed in Japan. Something is wrong.
The thoughts that ran through Kyoka bothered her; she suspected her ex-husband of doing something wrong; this was the man she had shared many things with. It had ended, yes, but for the bad, there had been good. She wanted to ask him, but there wasn't much she could do, even if he was guilty of something. She pulled out her phone.
Lady of Rock: Are you and the team still in town?
Master of Hot Ice: Yes, is everything alright? After wrapping up the docks and finishing the paperwork, we were about to come by the hospital to check on Deku.
Lady of Rock: I might be nothing, but must talk to you guys when you arrive. Let me know so I can meet you outside.
Master of Hot Ice: I will do it.
-Room 107-
"I would like to talk to you about the events that led to the fight at the docks."
"Nice to see you to Tenya," Denki said sarcastically.
"I apologize; hello, Denki; how are you?"
"Been shot, caught in the middle of a villain fight, and had to explore a Nomu lab. Other than that, I am great." He gave a wry smile. "How are you?"
"Doing well, I had almost to arrest your ex-wife…"
"Whoa, what happened with Kyoka?" Denki said, sitting up more.
"She may have assaulted some hospital personnel in getting Eri to Izuku." He said; as he did, he was watching Denki's face.
"Why did she do that?"
"Izuku almost died; if Eri had not been here, he probably would have," Tenya responded, keeping his voice in its normal tone.
"Dang, I am glad he is okay," Denki responded, looking at the bed. "Is Kyoka okay? Is she here?"
"She is here; the director is not going to press charges, but I think she does have to do some things like PSAs and a few performances."
"That's good; she is the reason I am here. I wanted to beg her to take me back."
"Well, I hope it works out for you," Tenya said. "Before you leave, we need to get a formal report."
"I understand; I remember the rules." He said.
"Denki, one question?" Tenya said, pausing his hand on the door. "Why did you call Izuku for help and not someone in Tokyo?"
"I was already in the process of trying to talk to him, seeing if he knew where Kyoka was; she or Momo hadn't answered their phones, and with the whole dating Momo thing." Denki shrugged his uninjured shoulder. "I had called his phone, and when he didn't answer, I called his agency, then all hell broke loose."
"I see," he said, walking out. "I hope you feel better soon." Tenya knew that part of what Denki was saying was true, but it wasn't the whole truth.
-Outside the hospital-
"So you have no idea why he is here, Kyoka, ribbit." Tsu looked at her friend.
"No, no one does." She said. "I am worried that he may have gotten into something and lured Izuku here."
"The ramifications of such actions would be quite severe," Reiko stopped and thought. "Deku has been rather focused on dismantling the Professor's organization; it could be that they lured him in hopes of killing him and seeing if they could destabilize society again. We know they have their hands in more than the trigger." The others nodded.
"That thought has merit if the Professor's group got its hooks into Denki," Yosetsu said, looking around. "King Explosion was saying that they encountered a bunch of small bands of his people getting ready to strike, and similar reports have been coming in from all over the place."
"Killing Deku would indeed cause problems," Ibara stopped for a second. "But that is why we went into Protocol Alpha One."
Shoto put his hand to his chin, "If we assume that this was a targeted strike which included the attempted death of Izuku, we need to get Compulsion in to talk to the lab coats." He nodded to Set, who stepped away and pulled out her phone. "We must ascertain what Chargebolt is doing here. We all know that Deku would do anything to help us."
"Hell yeah, he will," Tetsu added. "That dude would run out of his wedding to save one of us."
"We better not let that happen unless we want Creati to kill whoever he just ran out to save," Bondo added with a chuckle. The group nodded. "If Denki is involved, then why?"
"Money, drugs, maybe women?" Mina turned and looked at Kyoka.
"We did pretty well for ourselves, not Momo levels, but enough that we wouldn't have to work for a few years if we choose not to. Royalty checks would help keep us afloat." Kyoka paused. "Drugs maybe; all we ever did was some recreational but nothing hardcore. Women, he likes women."
"We will discuss your "recreational" habits later," Ibara stated, staring at Kyoka.
"He has been partying a lot lately," Sero said. "Whenever I have talked to him, he has been telling me some wild stuff, and he is never alone."
"Our divorce has been final for a while now; we were separated for a time before that," Kyoka said. "Why the fall into that now?"
"It all starts with something simple," Mina stated. "Remember my problem with Pure Joy? I just started; thankfully, Eiji was there to keep it from getting out of hand." The others nodded. "I could have fallen fast without someone there to catch me. I guess you probably said no a lot for the both of you." Kyoka nodded. "Remove someone saying no and some hangers-on saying yes…"
"What if he came here to try to get Kyoka back and was calling Izuku for help?" Set said. "Maybe there is a drug component; he lands, looks to score, and gets caught up in something." They all looked at her. "Shit happens, we all know that. Our jobs are to wander the city and stumble into things. It doesn't have to be sinister; Compulsion will talk to the lab coats. If they say something different, then we have something to go on. You know Denki the best. Would he lure Izuku into an ambush even if he was deep into drugs or whatever?"
Kyoka thought about it hard. "No. He wouldn't. I have never known him to turn on a friend or anyone. He would always go out of his way to help someone, even when we were on the road. As Tetsu said, all he had to do was ask Izuku for help."
Shoto touched her shoulder, "Go talk to him; you will know if he is lying."
-Room 107-
"Hey, Denki," she said, entering the room.
"Hi, Ko," he said quietly.
"How are you feeling?" she asked. She couldn't see anything immediately, but she noticed he was thinner but not healthy. If he were on drugs, the painkillers he was on would be able to keep him from having to come down for now.
"Been Shot, you know, just another night," he said, looking up at her, giving her his trademark smile. It held this mischievous and boyish charm.
"I didn't know you were coming to town?" she said, sitting on the edge of his bed.
"Yeah, it was kind of spur of the moment," his eyes wandered over her. "I guess you want to know why I am here?"
"I do, yes," she said as gently as possible. "And how you ended up on the docks."
"Are you on the job?" he asked, a bit anxious.
"No, I haven't gotten my license back yet," she took his hand. "Denki, you showed up, out of nowhere, call Deku's agency to get ahold of him and call him for help instead of reaching out to locals here in Tokyo or any of the people you are close to. He comes to help you and almost gets killed."
"Tenya told me," he looked at her hand. "I came to ask you to take me back."
"Denki…"
"Look, Ko, this is what we do, we break up, we get back together." He squeezed her hand. "We took it a little far this time, but now it's time to get back together." She could hear the pleading in his voice.
"Denki, you will always have a place in my heart, but this isn't how it should be. We shouldn't be breaking up and getting back together; it isn't healthy or good for either of us."
"Then we just have to stay together this time," he tightened his grip on her hand in a silent, desperate plea.
"We said that during the third year and then again before graduation, and we decided that getting married was the right solution. Again, in Colorado and Paris." She placed her other hand on top of his. "Why were you at the docks?"
He deeply breathed, "I was there to buy drugs."
"The villain group?"
"They were there for something else; I didn't know what was happening until it got crazy. One of them recognized me and thought it was some setup."
"Why did you call Izuku?"
"I didn't know where you were; I wanted to ask him to help me find you and if he would help me get you back. He didn't answer his cell, so I called his agency. I was on the phone from the Airport to the docks." He looked down again at her hand; there wasn't even a mark from her wedding ring on her finger anymore. "I was so focused on trying to score that I called Deku, of all people, while trying to do a drug deal."
"How long have you been using?" she said quietly.
"About a year ago, I went to a party someone offered. I thought a little bit wouldn't hurt, and no one was there to stop me." He looked away, ashamed. "I thought that if I got on a plane and came here, I could get you to take me back and…"
"Denki, I don't love you like that anymore." She said softly. "I will be here to offer what help I can, but I can't be in your life like that. I can't be your girlfriend or your nanny."
"I don't know what to do?" he said. "I just know things are better when I am with you."
"They are for a bit, and then they go bad," she said. "No more roller coaster. I don't want that; what I want for my life is something different now."
"What should I do?" he said, sounding so lost that it broke her heart.
"Come home to Japan," pulled her hands away. "Get into rehab, rebuild your life. You have friends here family, and I will be here to give you moral support. But we can't be together like you are asking. I want something different out of life. You came here to get me back so I could straighten everything out, and then we would fight and break up. You have to do it yourself this time."
"I don't know how," the word tumbled softly from his mouth. A door opened, accompanied by a soft knock; they looked and saw his parents.
"Ask them, they will know." She leaned over and kissed his forehead. "If you want to talk, you have my number."
"Will I see you later?" he called to her.
"Yes, as a friend, I will always be here for you," she said.
-Room 009-
Kyoka quietly entered room 009. Izuku was sitting in bed with a stack of paperwork; he looked up as she walked in. "No rest for the wicked?"
"Paperwork is the true villainy of heroics," he said with a smile, setting the papers aside.
She quietly closed the door, "Momo and Eri?"
"Momo took her to eat and get some clean clothes over at the tower," he looked at her smiling and held a hand out to her. Her mind drifted to the balcony; she didn't hesitate this time. She walked over and took his hand, and he hugged her. "Thank you for helping Eri and saving my life."
She hadn't wanted to think about it; she had pushed that thought away, to the side and everywhere, doing her best not to dwell on it. Instead, she would have rather thought Denki was part of some nefarious plot to kill Izuku than the thought he had almost died.
"That was not cool, Izuku," she whispered, wrapping her arms. "I am sure Momo already read you the riot act, but after the other night, I haven't even had a chance yet, and the thought of it being taken away was…almost too much."
"If it weren't for all three of you, I wouldn't be here right now," he squeezed her tighter. "You did good, Kyoko, you did good." She returned his hug the best she could. "I do need you to tell me about Denki, though. There are a lot of questions, and I need to know if we need to either arrest him or get him out of the country."
"You would do that? You would get him out?" she pulled back, staring at him as he nodded. "Why?"
"For you."
"Damit Izuku, you make it hard not to kiss you." She sat up some, putting a little distance between them, and wiped a stray tear that had decided to make a run for freedom. "We don't need to smuggle him out of the country, but he does need help…."
Izuku listened to the whole story: the drugs, him asking her to take him back, her rejection. "He is going to need rehab and support. Of course, Hitoshi will talk to the lab coats to make sure, but I could tell he wasn't lying."
"We must wait for confirmation, but I trust your judgment."
"How long are you going to be in here?"
"Just till tomorrow, Eri took great care of me. I feel great. It looks like Katsuki and the rest of the teams have wiped out the rest of the Professor's network." He paused, thinking. "How would you like to head up a task force?"
"What me?" she was shocked. "I don't even have a license."
"We train you up, and you can take it next month," he said casually. "I will do it personally."
She thought about it, chewing on her thumb absently; Izuku immediately thought of how cute she looked doing so. He had seen her do it the whole time he had known her; for a moment, they were back in school, not complicated baggage, and he understood her comment about the difficulty of restraining himself in kissing her.
"What is the offer?" she finally asked.
"The lab," he said. "An abandoned lab was just found in Tokyo; I shudder to think if there are any more out there, if they have some countdown timer to activate, or even if it happens by accident. I want you to head up a task force in searching and seeing if we can find anymore and get them shut down."
"Why me?" her head tilted slightly.
"You are smart and resourceful. You have good recon abilities, and with some slight modification, you can use sound to help with echolocation to find hidden chambers. I need someone I can trust heading the team and someone I know that will get the job done. Also you are not heading up an agency and you are available."
"You would trust me with this? It's pretty big." Her eyes locked in on his, reading his face.
"You risked your freedom to get Eri to me without questioning her. You put your faith in her, and in the course of doing so, you saved my life. We want to build more trust, and I can think of no better way than asking you to do this. It will allow me to do what I need to and sleep better knowing that someone who loves me is handling this." He smiled that damn smile of his, and she felt herself melting. "Well?"
It was a real task, a real job. Something important, not only to him but to Japan. Even if nothing were found, it would still provide peace of mind. All for One was dead, Shigaraki was finished, the MLA was defeated, and the reforms and changes that had come about were having great societal changes. The Professor and his operation were seemingly the last holdout of chaos, and they were being moped up as they talked.
It was trying to put her in a position that he would have to trust in her, and it would be up to her to rise to that or fall. If she ran then it was over, she wanted to step up and this was her chance.
"I'll do it," she whispered. "For you and for all of us who went through that. We will all sleep a little better."
They sat talking till Momo and Eri returned, then it was all of them till visiting hours were over, and even the nurse insisted that even the pro hero Deku needed his rest. The trio rode back to the tower; it was still All-Might Tower, but the bottom floors had been turned into a museum and testament to the man's life. Free admission for all, of course. The various other feet had been turned into smaller agencies to help those just starting to find footing. The upper floors belonged to Izuku and his Beacon Agency, with the private residence intact. This is where the trio found themselves; some modifications had been made, but it still had that touch of the man himself, with the large furniture and such. Eri didn't want to sleep alone and found her way to Momo's bed.
Kyoka, feeling restless still, was happy when she found a guitar; she walked out to the balcony and sat looking over the city towards where the hospital was. The melody dancing around her mind immediately took hold; the lyrics drifted upon the wind, her heart hoping they would find their way.
I have no bitterness, my sweet
I'll never forget this one-night thing
Even tomorrow, in other arms
My heart will stay yours until I die.
