OOC: Just a fun fic for the Mortal Kombat verse. Won't be long, probably 2 or 3 parts. Feedback is always appreciated.
Timeline: Just before the events of Mortal Kombat X.
The day started out innocently enough. Earthrealm had been quiet for the past few months. Sonja had taken his team to a training course somewhere in Alaska. Raiden was off talking to the Elder God's about something Johnny snoozed through. And a good quarter of the special forces was off on holiday or visiting family.
It was, in other words, the perfect time to be attacked.
Johnny Cage knew his place in the base was an odd one. He wasn't of any particular rank, but a 'special consultant'. He was officially in charge of a small team of kids, including his own daughter Cassie. Over the years he had earned respect with the rest of the troops.
But ever since the divorce, things between him and Sonya had been…tense. They were known to argue like cats and dogs when they were close, yet Sonya knew that booting him from special forces would demoralize the team…and Cassie. So as a sort of compromise, they tried to stay as far away from each other as possible. She had taken his team for 'advanced weather training' but Johnny suspected it was to poke holes in his command style. The whole thing left him in a less-than-amused mood.
But when the alert came that there was an intruder at the Jinsei chamber, Johnny was all business. After alerting Sonya of the breach, he assumed a small team to meet the intruder. Fortunately the base had portals that were directly linked to Raiden's temple. They immediately teleported there.
As soon as he arrived, he could see Nitara rummaging around the sealed vault containing Shinnok's amulet, along with a band of mercenaries. Nitara was wincing, which might be due to the Jinsei. Johnny had no idea what Raiden's 'special bathwater did', exactly. But he knew the amulet was bad news. He folded his arms. "Nitara. Shouldn't you be hanging out at a Spirit of Halloween store?"
"Johnny Cage. Full of pathetic wit, as usual," Nitara shot back.
Johnny folded his arms. "Come on, Nitara. You won't get through us. And you don't strike me as the sort to be in league with Shinnok. Who are you working for?" Admittedly he didn't know her too well, besides the fact that she came from some scary vampire realm, but it just didn't fit.
"That's my business!" Nitara hissed, and lunged at him.
Johnny followed up with his signature shadow kick move as the rest of the special forces attacked the mercenaries. "Let's talk about this Nitara! I'll even buy you a nice bloody steak!" he invited.
"Fool! You're the one on the menu tonight!" Nitara said.
Johnny wasn't too worried. He had gone up against the likes of Goro. This he could handle.
But then fate took a different turn.
As he blocked an attack, a jet of Jensie water suddenly burst from the pool. Why that happened, Johnny had no idea, but the sound was enough to distract him. At that split second, Nitara leapt up on him, her fangs piercing his throat.
"Argh!" Johnny flipped her over to the ground, in one move, and followed up with a kick to the side.
Nitara stood, and noticed the lack of warriors around her. "Retreat!" she spat to the rest of the warriors. At least, those that were left standing. A handful of them quickly disappeared through the portal. The ones who were left were quickly apprehended by the special forces.
"Dammit," Johnny said, touching his bloody throat. "Medic!"
One of the medics quickly looked him over. "Doesn't look too serious," he said.
"So that means I'm not going to turn into Dracula, right? If so can it be the Nicholas Cage version?" Johnny joked.
The medic chuckled, and put a dab of hydrogen peroxide on the wound. "We'll check your blood at the base just to make sure there's no infection," he said.
"Great," Johnny looked at the fallen mercenaries. A huge mess over nothing, it seemed. He glanced at the pool and felt a bit uneasy for some reason.
That feeling followed him as they returned to base not long after.
