Episode 1

(On present day Earth, at Gatwick airport, a blue police box is being taken away on the back of a truck. Chasing desperately after it, are the Doctor, Princess – who's holding onto her hat – and Jamie.)

JAMIE: The Tardis!

DOCTOR: Yes, we know! Come on!

(But no matter how hard the time travellers run, they are unable to catch up to the truck, as it drives out of Gatwick airport, leaving them behind. Realising this, the three come to a stop to catch their breath.)

PRINCESS: We're too late.

DOCTOR: The Tardis is gone.

JAMIE: (Exhausted) But…But I thought you…saw this, Princess?

PRINCESS: I did.

JAMIE: Then why didn't you say something sooner, we could have stopped them taking it!

DOCTOR: That's enough, Jamie.

JAMIE: But, Doctor–!

DOCTOR: It's happened. Now–

PRINCESS: (Distant) We need to go over here.

(The Princess charges off towards a nearby garage next to the gate leading out of the airport.)

JAMIE: Och, what's she up to now?

DOCTOR: Best follow her. Come on.

(The Doctor and Jamie follow the Princess into the garage, where loud music is coming from a radio. Near said radio, at a desk, a man – Hall – in overalls is filling out some paperwork. From his pocket runs a wire connecting to an earbud in his ear.)

PRINCESS: Excuse me!

HALL: Wha…? (Looks up to see Princess) Oh, eh, hello.

PRINCESS: Hello, we're here about our Tardis.

HALL: Sorry, can't hear you. My mate likes the wireless turned on at full blast.

(Hall turns off the radio.)

JAMIE: Who's taken the Tardis?

HALL: The what?

DOCTOR: He means the police telephone box.

HALL: He said Tardis. And so did she, before.

DOCTOR: Yes, well…Tardis, that's another name for it.

HALL: Oh, foreign, are they?

PRINCESS: You could say–

JAMIE: Me, foreign?! You're the one that's foreign. I'm Scottish!

DOCTOR: Easy, Jamie, easy.

JAMIE: Doctor, it's getting further away all the time.

DOCTOR: Yes, I know. (To Hall) Well, anyway, it's our property and we've come to collect it.

HALL: The police box you mean?

DOCTOR: Yes!

HALL: Yeah, well…that's gone.

JAMIE: Oh, we know it's gone! That's the whole point. It's ours and somebody's stolen it.

HALL: Oh, I don't know about that. I've got a note here somewhere. (Picks a clipboard off his desk) Yeah, here we are. There. Police Tel Box. Collection four o'clock.

PRINCESS: But it's twenty past four.

HALL: Yeah. They were running late.

DOCTOR: Is that to do with what was happening earlier on?

HALL: Don't know nothing about that. I only came on shift half an hour ago.

DOCTOR: Can I see that note you mention, please?

HALL: Sure.

(Hall hands the clipboard to the Doctor.)

HALL: Been signed for.

DOCTOR: Yes, so I see. J Smith. Doesn't really help us, does it?

(The Doctor hands the clipboard back to Hall.)

HALL: Yeah, well, I just do what I'm told. You'd better see the airport Commandant or someone.

PRINCESS: That's a good idea, we've just come from his office.

HALL: (Surprised) You have?

PRINCESS: Yes, and I'm sure he'll help us get in touch with police about our stolen–

HALL: Of course, I–I do know the name of the firm what picked it up.

JAMIE: You do?

HALL: Yeah, firm name of, er…Leatherman.

JAMIE: Leatherman, now that's a clue.

(The Doctor begins pushing Jamie and the Princess outside.)

DOCTOR: Thank you very much.

JAMIE: Just a minute–

PRINCESS: See you soon!

JAMIE: Now, what street do they– Doctor, wait.

(Once outside, the Doctor pulls Jamie and the Princess around the side of the building, out of sight.)

JAMIE: Doctor, what're you–

DOCTOR: (Hissing) Keep your voice down.

JAMIE: (Quietly) But what are we doing? We should be following that clue he gave us.

DOCTOR: Perhaps. But I think we'd better keep an eye on him.

JAMIE: Why?

DOCTOR: Well, didn't you notice his overalls? They were much too small for him. He also had no idea about what had been going on at the airport.

JAMIE: Aye, he said he just arrived though?

DOCTOR: Yes. Rather convenient, don't you think? And for some reason no one's mentioned any of it to him until now. And the top sheet of his clip board was different to all the others. And when we mentioned the police, he became friendly.

PRINCESS: You mean it was an act?!

(The Doctor and Jamie shush the Princess, as Hall then walks by, not noticing them. The Doctor motions for the Princess and Jamie to follow him, as they tail Hall. Hall then walks out of the gate and then back towards the airport. After returning to the airport, Hall gets in his car and then drives off.)

JAMIE: Oh, no, we'll never catch him now!

(The Princess suddenly whistles loudly with two fingers, catching the attention of a taxi that pulls up alongside.)

DOCTOR: Well, done, Princess! Quick, get in.

(The Doctor, Princess and Jamie pile into the back of the taxi.)

DOCTOR: (To driver) Follow that car.

(The taxi then pulls away, driving after Hall's car, as they head into London.)

(Later, in London, the Doctor, Princess and Jamie enter an alley. At the end is Hall's parked car.)

DOCTOR: That's his car.

(The trio approach the car, peering in, but its empty.)

PRINCESS: Well, he's not in there now.

DOCTOR: Well, he can't have gone far. I suspect he's nearby.

JAMIE: Why, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Not a very usual place to park this. Runs the risk of someone stealing it.

JAMIE: Aye, well, the same could be said of airports. I still don't understand why you dinnae tell us sooner, Princess?

PRINCESS: It's complicated, Jamie.

JAMIE: But you knew!

PRINCESS: Yes and no.

JAMIE: Well, it cannae be both.

PRINCESS: Why not?

JAMIE: It just can't! Doctor–

DOCTOR: Leave it be, Jamie. Now, help me look around–

(The sound of something falling from nearby. The trio turn around, before all looking to a nearby warehouse door.)

JAMIE: Doctor, did you–

DOCTOR: Yes, we heard it, Jamie.

(They approach the door, which Doctor pulls open slowly. Inside, they see Hall on the floor.)

DOCTOR: It's the man in the overalls.

(They all hurry inside and gather around him.)

PRINCESS: But he can't be dead.

(The Doctor checks Hall, seeing that he's only been knocked on the head.)

DOCTOR: He's not.

HALL: (Confused) Where… Where's…Ken?

DOCTOR: Ken? Ken who?

PRINCESS: Ken Doll?

JAMIE: What you talking about dolls for, make him tell us where the Tardis is!

(But before he can, Hall's eyes roll back and shut.)

DOCTOR: No good, he's out cold. See if we can find some–

PRINCESS: Money.

(The Princess gets up and goes over to a nearby table.)

DOCTOR: I was going to say, water.

PRINCESS: We could use the money to buy some water.

JAMIE: Well, we don't have any money, do we?

PRINCESS: Well, there's this money here.

(The Princess holds up a wad of notes she picked up from the table.)

JAMIE: Well, is that a lot of money?

PRINCESS: Between two and three-hundred pounds.

DOCTOR: But why leave the money after knocking him on the head?

JAMIE: Och, what's it matter? All I want to know is why steal the Tardis in the first place?

DOCTOR: Yes, that's been bothering me too, Jamie. But equally troubling is this man's presence.

JAMIE: What'd ya mean?

DOCTOR: Well, why hang around to give us a false lead? They had the Tardis, they could have gotten away with it, and there was no way for us to find them. That is unless they wanted us to.

JAMIE: Who's they, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I don't know. Which is all the more worrying.

(Looking around the room, the Doctor spots something thing on the floor and picks it up.)

PRINCESS: What's that?

DOCTOR: A match book and some cigarettes. Now, I wonder…

(The Doctor searches through Hall's pockets.)

DOCTOR: Yes, this man rolled his own cigarettes, (Holds up match book and cigarettes from floor) so these must belong to somebody else. That's a fair assumption.

(An angry car horn blares from outside the warehouse.)

JAMIE: What's that?

DOCTOR: It's all right. It's probably just the taxi driver wanting his fair.

PRINCESS: (Holding up money) Shall I go and pay him with this before he escapes?

DOCTOR: Why would a taxi driver want to escape–

(Hall suddenly scampers up from the floor and races out the warehouse door.)

DOCTOR: Hey! Come back!

(James tries to pursue him, but Hall's shut the door and blocked it from the other side with a metal rod. Jamie tries to force the door open but is unable to as Hall makes his escape. The Doctor and Princess come over to join Jamie.)

JAMIE: Well, give us a hand.

(The Doctor then pulls the door inwards instead, and the door opens, the metal rod falling to the floor. Jamie scowls embarrassingly but heads out into the alley. Unfortunately, Hall is nowhere to be seen.)

JAMIE: Not a sign of him. The only chance we had.

DOCTOR: There is this. (Holds up the match book) 'The Tricolour.' It's a coffee bar, apparently. And that's not all.

JAMIE: Well, what else?

DOCTOR: Well, normally people pull out their matches from right to left. These have been torn out from left to right.

JAMIE: What does that mean?

DOCTOR: It means we've got to find a coffee bar called, 'The Tricolour,' and look for a man called Ken – or Kenneth someone – who's left-handed.

JAMIE: Now we've got something to go on.

DOCTOR: But it's so little, Jamie. It's too little.

PRINCESS: No, Doctor. I think that's exactly where we need to be.

DOCTOR: Really?

(The Princess nods.)

DOCTOR: Well, I suppose there's no harm in checking it out.

JAMIE: Don't give up Doctor. Remember Bruce.

DOCTOR: Bruce?

JAMIE: Robert Bruce.

PRINCESS: I thought we were looking for Ken?

JAMIE: I know but–

(Another angry blare of the car horn.)

DOCTOR: Come on, before we make him any angrier.

(The time travellers all make their way out of the alley and back to the waiting taxi.)

(Later, in the Tricolour coffee bar, the Doctor is sat at the bar, with Jamie on one side and the Princess on the other. The place is reasonably busy, with a jukebox in the corner playing, 'Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen.' The time travellers each have a cup of coffee in front of them. Jamie is sipping his, but doesn't seem terribly keen on it, the Doctor is staring down at his cup, and the Princess is happily sipping hers while looking around with interest. Jamie sets aside his cup, before looking to the Doctor.)

JAMIE: Don't look so depressed, Doctor.

DOCTOR: If only we knew what he looked like, Jamie.

JAMIE: Well, maybe the Princess has had another premonition?

PRINCESS: Nope, sorry.

(The Doctor sighs.)

JAMIE: Well, we'll ask one of the lasses in a moment, when things get quieter.

DOCTOR: We've got to untangle this, you know.

JAMIE: It's all quite obvious to me.

DOCTOR: Oh?

JAMIE: They're just robbers. Thieves, you understand.

PRINCESS: No, there's more to it than that.

DOCTOR: The Princess is right. Why leave that man in the hangar to give us a clue?

PRINCESS: That's not what I mean.

JAMIE: Hey, that's a point, we never followed up with that Leatherman.

DOCTOR: There is no delivery firm of that name. What did you mean, Princess?

PRINCESS: That tingly feeling's back.

DOCTOR: What tingly feeling?

JAMIE: Doctor, are you sure about the Leatherman?

DOCTOR: Yes, Jamie, now quiet a moment.

PRINCESS: It's been growing ever since we arrived.

DOCTOR: What, in this bar?

PRINCESS: No, since arriving in this time. I think I might have had a premonition about it before, but I can't…

(The Princess stares dead ahead, expression frozen in shock.)

DOCTOR: Princess?

PRINCESS: (Distant) It's happening again. Right now.

DOCTOR: What is?

JAMIE: What's going on?

(The Doctor waves for Jamie to be quiet.)

PRINCESS: But how can they be doing it? They don't have access to that kind of power. She said last time they came through the cracks, from a timeline yet to be – and the time after that too. So, they've taken someone else's power. It's crude though, limited. Can only go here, back, and there again. That's why they need us… It's a trap.

JAMIE: It's not the Chameleons again?

DOCTOR: (Hissing) Jamie.

PRINCESS: No, not the Chameleons. It's a far older enemy. (To Doctor) They know us, as we are now. They know our faces, the photographs. They've been lying in wait. Coincidence?

JAMIE: Doctor, this isn't making–

DOCTOR: Shhh!

PRINCESS: It must be though. They don't have the power to position us like that. But they will…unless we stop them. (To Doctor) We must stop them.

DOCTOR: Stop who?

PRINCESS: We finally meet, at the end. We can stop them once and for all. The factor… The trap… We must stay here for our meeting, with Dr Galloway and Princess Dietrich.

(The Princess sways in her seat but the Doctor stops her from falling. The Princess blinks, as if waking up, looking around in confusion.)

PRINCESS: What happened?

DOCTOR: You just had another premonition.

PRINCESS: Again? Did I say anything useful?

JAMIE: Don't you remember?

DOCTOR: You kept warning us about an enemy, can you remember who that enemy was?

PRINCESS: I'm sorry, Doctor. I just…

DOCTOR: It's all right, my dear. Don't worry.

PRINCESS: Did I really not say anything helpful?

JAMIE: You said we should wait here for a meeting with a Dr Galloway and Princess Dietrich.

PRINCESS: I did?

DOCTOR: Perhaps we were right to come here after all. How do you feel now, Princess?

PRINCESS: My head's a little sore. Like…there's something pressing against it.

DOCTOR: And that tingly feeling?

PRINCESS: Still there, but stronger now. It's tied into the pressure on my head.

DOCTOR: You mentioned the timelines during your premonition. Perhaps all this is to do with time, and that is what's causing your headache.

(Both the Doctor and Princess look to each other in concern.)

(A while later, the Doctor is still sat with the Princess, who is focused on building a house of cards at the bar, while Jamie is chatting to some women.)

DOCTOR: (To Princess) How are you feeling now?

PRINCESS: Good. The pressure on my head has stopped.

DOCTOR: Probably means they've stopped whatever they're doing, at least for now. I wonder when they'll start again though.

PRINCESS: Soon.

DOCTOR: What makes you say that?

PRINCESS: I've experienced the sensation a couple of times here now. But I can also…feel it. Like a hole. Getting deeper with each hammer of the nail.

DOCTOR: You did use the word, 'Crude,' in your premonition. I hope whatever means they're using isn't too damaging.

(A pause, as the Princess finishes placing a card in her tower, before taking another.)

PRINCESS: Do you think I'll ever get control of them? My premonitions.

DOCTOR: Hard to say. I can't say I've ever heard of anything like it before. But then, maybe it's because of who you are that you're experiencing them at all.

PRINCESS: Do you think she could be doing this to me?

DOCTOR: It's not impossible, but I would think it odd.

(The Princess finishes placing the card in her house of cards, then slouches.)

DOCTOR: If you desperately want answers, we can always–

PRINCESS: No, I'm not calling them.

DOCTOR: Very well. But they might be able to help more than I.

PRINCESS: I don't trust them, I trust you.

DOCTOR: Thank you, but I don't even know where to begin. Would you like them to stop, or do you want to be able to initiate them?

PRINCESS: What about that helmet you made? The one that let me share my premonition with the Macra.

DOCTOR: I haven't touched that in some time.

PRINCESS: Well, you did say you thought it could initiate a premonition remember?

DOCTOR: I think what happened might have been coincidental, Princess. At least from looking at the data. Although, perhaps…

PRINCESS: What, what is it?

DOCTOR: Just a thought. Leave it with me.

(At that moment Jamie returns, sitting down alongside the Doctor with a thud – one which prompts the Princess' house of cards to come crashing down.)

PRINCESS: Jamie!

JAMIE: Oh, sorry, Princess.

(Pouting, the Princess gathers up her cards.)

DOCTOR: Did you manage to learn anything?

JAMIE: None of the lasses here can remember anybody called Ken or Kenneth.

DOCTOR: Oh, dear.

JAMIE: But, they do have a different lot on duty in the evening. Now, maybe they'll know.

(The Doctor looks out of the window, seeing a man – Perry – staring back at him from outside on the street.)

DOCTOR: Jamie, I'm being stared at. Is there something wrong with me?

JAMIE: (Taps head) You mean up here, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Is my hair in disarray?

JAMIE: Well, no more than usual.

PRINCESS: You should start wearing hats again.

DOCTOR: The thought had occurred to me. Look out, he's coming in.

(Jamie and the Princess look as Perry enters the coffee bar.)

PRINCESS: (Hissing) That's him!

DOCTOR: What?

PRINCESS: The man we're meeting, that's him!

(Perry approaches the time travellers.)

PERRY: I beg your pardon.

DOCTOR: Not at all.

PERRY: It is Doctor Galloway, isn't it?

JAMIE: Doctor Galloway?

PERRY: And Princess Dietrich?

PRINCESS: Yes, it's lovely to meet you at last.

PERRY: Oh, well, thank you, but I–

PRINCESS: Oh, and this is our good friend, Jamie. You might even say best friend.

JAMIE: Eh, hello.

PERRY: Pleasure. Eh, but I'm not Mr Waterfield.

DOCTOR: Oh?

PERRY: My card.

(Perry takes out a card, offering it to the Princess, who takes it.)

PRINCESS: (Reading) Mr Perry.

PERRY: That's right. Now, Mr Waterfield's frightfully sorry, but he can't meet you as arranged.

PRINCESS: No, we were definitely supposed to meet–

DOCTOR: Oh, dear, what a pity.

PERRY: But he said if you'd care to come to the shop at about ten tonight, he'll see to you personally.

DOCTOR: At about ten. Oh, yes. We'll be there.

PERRY: Right-ho. Goodbye.

PRINCESS: Bye.

(Perry exits the coffee bar.)

PRINCESS: Strange that he didn't know he was supposed to meet us.

DOCTOR: Well, not everyone sees things the way you do, Princess. May I? (Takes card from Princess, reads) Edward Waterfield. Genuine Victoriana.

PRINCESS: Victoriana…

JAMIE: Eh, did you notice? He used the same names the Princess said before.

DOCTOR: Yes, I did.

JAMIE: So was this part of your premonition, Princess?

PRINCESS: It must have been. (To Doctor) So, shall we pop round?

DOCTOR: Oh yes. I think we'll definitely be going to see Mr Edward Waterfield, very soon…
