What if Hanna had fallen in love with Quintus but when Matthew left, he abandoned her? What if Gaius hated her and had never adopted her? What if she had to stay in Matthew's old house all alone with only her dog for comfort? What if her parents tried to help her, but she refused at every turn because she wants Gaius as her dad instead now? What happens when she no longer has anybody she loves? Can she be happy again?
It all started when that exasperating preacher called her brother and best friend to come follow him. And then they left. They left Hanna alone with no one but her dog Ben. Quintus had broken up with her, her parents hated her and the one person she wanted to be her parent hated her as well.
Maya she could understand because they had talked about all of this since the girls had been ten, but her brother was another story.
At first Hanna tried with the positive approach. To try and live on her own as best she could. After all, she really didn't need anybody. But that didn't last long. For the next eight weeks, she went about her days mechanically. Mostly staying at home and staring at the walls, curled up in bed. She ate, but barely. One meal a day was about it as she was mostly sleeping all day now. Sleep was the only thing to keep her from her problems.
But after those eight weeks, she thought she would try and live her life again. She was tired of moping around because she had no one. She started eating more, woke up in the mornings once more and even took a walk through the neighborhood. That was about as far as she would let herself go. And if she saw Gaius, she would turn and quickly walk the other way, doing her best not to cry.
One day after three weeks of returning to her normal daily living schedule was the day she had decided to try the marketplace. It was nice to be around the familiar sounds and smells once more. It was a good distraction she found and it was nice to just walk around even though most people hated her. She had been walking by some of the vendors that sold flowers and all the familiar treats that her father used to buy her when she was little. Tears filled her eyes a little now as she remembered all the times he used to carry her on his shoulders, gave her the warmest hugs and called her his little princess. She hadn't realized she had actually been crying until a hand rested on her shoulder.
"I remember you used to love those treats when you were little" the voice of her mother said next to her.
Hanna sighed shakily, wiping her eyes before turning to her mother. "What do you want Elishiva?"
Her mother looked sad and taken aback by her daughter's anger and tears. And the fact that she didn't call her Eema made her sad. "Can we go somewhere and talk sweetheart?"
"No we cannot. You abandoned me remember? You told me I wasn't you're daughter anymore and so did Alpheaus."
Now they were attracting the attention of everyone in the market, but Hanna didn't care. She was too upset with everyone to stay cool anymore. And her parents needed to know how much they had really hurt her. Now the tears were pouring out of her eyes as she shook her head and covered her face.
"Just leave me alone. Just leave me alone!"
She couldn't take it anymore. Not telling people how exactly they had hurt her. She wouldn't hold back from now on. Her mother looked saddened as she tried to touch her daughter's cheek, but Hanna backed away, more tears falling.
Her mother was about to say something but an unexpected voice spoke up behind Hanna. "I believe the girl asked you to leave her alone miss. I would leave if I were you."
Elishiva nodded, shooting one more saddened glance at her broken daughter before walking away. Hanna sighed shakily, wiping her eyes as she turned to face whoever it was who had spoken up for her. Her eyes widened to see it was a Roman. Marcus to be exact.
"T...thanks" she said shakily, giving the man a grateful smile before turning to walk away. She didn't expect the next words to come out of the Roman's mouth.
"Could I escort you home Hanna? I can see you need someone to talk to."
She hesitated for a moment, but nodded. "If you want to. I'm not worth it, but if you want to."
He looked concerned now when she said she wasn't worth it. How could he not have noticed Hanna's sadness this whole time? She had probably been broken all along, but her brother leaving seemed to have made her happy act go away. They walked along in silence for a moment before Marcus spoke up.
"So...You want to tell me what happened?"
And so Hanna explained everything to him as they walked towards her home, and by the time they had reached their destination, Marcus was shocked and saddened by her whole story. He didn't know so much hurt was hidden behind a pretty face.
"Well...Thank you for walking me home" Hanna said with a weak smile.
"Anytime Hanna. You can consider me a friend. Anytime you want to talk, I am here."
She paused for a moment, looking shocked, but she still smiled and nodded. "Thank you Marcus. I could use a friend right now."
A week later, she was walking along the streets when she ran into Maya, who was with her father, Gaius and a bunch of Roman soldiers.
"Here we go again" she thought now as Maya opened her mouth to speak.
"Hanna hi..."
Hanna paused for a minute, looking at her best friend before deciding the best decision was to quickly nod and walk away. She didn't want to cause another scene. She didn't know why she felt all this uncontrolled anger inside her at the moment, but the one person she didn't want to yell at was her best friend. Even though they were miles apart from eachother now.
Gaius looked back at Hanna now, wondering why she was so angry and upset. Marcus had said he had run into her the other day and mentioned that they had talked, but he hadn't said why. He just said that she had been very hurt and upset.
A couple days later, Marcus came to get Hanna. Apparently Quintus wanted to see her about her brother and she had no idea, but she could feel a blow up coming.
"I offered to escort you" Marcus said as they walked along, his hand on the small of her back. They had become best friends and all he wanted to do was protect her. He thought that maybe he could do a better job than Quintus had, but he also knew that he couldn't compete with Quintus when it came to the love that Hanna had for the Praetor.
"Thank you Marcus" she said softly as they walked along the street and into Roman territory.
Marcus didn't want to say anything more to his friend as he knew she needed time to herself. But he was there for her regardless of who he was to her. Best friend or beloved. They walked up the stairs and checked in with the secretary, who surprisingly looked at Hanna with sympathy as she and Marcus walked past him.
Tears filled her eyes as she walked into the familiar office now and they spilled over when she noticed Gaius standing in the room next to Quintus. She was shaking now and she couldn't control it. Gaius looked at her concerned, walking to her side, but she moved closer to Marcus who looked at Gaius, shaking his head. A silent agreement that the girl needed her space.
"Hanna! Have a seat dear" Quintus said happily as if nothing was going on.
"No thanks Praetor" she said now as Marcus rubbed her back gently.
Quintus frowned now as he got up, walking over to her, leaning against his desk. "Hanna I only have some questions for you. There is no need to be upset or angry."
"Really?" Hanna asked now, wiping her eyes that held controlled anger in them, sniffing with disbelief.
Gaius watched the girl carefully. She was thin, pale and small compared to the last time he saw her. What was happening? What had everybody done to her? Quintus looked at her as well, a little jealous if he was honest. What was Marcus doing with his arm around her?
"Han..."
"Let me save you the trouble Praetor" she said, not using his real name once more, which Quintus had to admit, he was stunned and hurt by.
"I don't know where my brother is, he didn't tell me why he quit to follow that preacher and I most certainly don't know anymore than you do! So go question my...well my former parents if you want to, but do not call for me again!" More tears leaked from her eyes now as she looked away.
Quintus' eyes widened, He was completely stunned. Usually he would have been angry by now, but he was shocked as he stared at the crying girl in front of him.
"Dominus if I may ask...why is she being questioned?" Gaius asked now reaching for Hanna's hand, only to have her move more into Marcus' arms, turning around as she cried into his chest.
Marcus held her tighter as he placed his head on her's, his heart breaking for Hanna. "I have to ask as well. She has done nothing Praetor."
Quintus' anger at Marcus got the best of him now. "That's my business and take you're hands off of her while you are at it!"
At this Hanna's anger rose to the surface and she whirled around to face Quintus now. "Don't you dare tell him that he cannot hold me! You broke up with me remember? For no good reason might I add. You shattered my heart into a million pieces Quintus and you don't even care! All you want to do is ask me some stupid questions about my brother! Well I have nothing to tell you! And you can kill me if you want. I know you wouldn't tell anybody if I died for you! I'm nothing to you! I'm nothing to you or Gaius!"
The room was silent now as all three men stared at the 16-year-old girl that was standing between all three of them. The girl they had all come to care about. And then she silently walked out of the room, leaving everyone speechless.
Later that night, Hanna was laying on the couch, her eyes glued to the wall as they had been since she had gotten back home. She had cried all her tears and now she was just numb and as broken as she was the day Matthew and Maya left. Just as the day Quintus broke her heart and just as she had been the day Gaius glared at her for the first time. She had been so put together then. So unbreakable that nothing could hurt her, but now she was shattered and it seemed like no one could reach her now.
Just as she was falling asleep, there was a knock on the door. She groaned and got up, not even caring that her hair was tangled and messed up now. She opened it now and almost wished that she hadn't. There stood Alpheaus, looking very guilty. She said nothing now as she stared at him angrily.
"Listen princess...I..."
"Don't call me that!" Hanna said shakily now as more tears filled her eyes, threatening to fall.
The man looked down now, saddened that he had ever hurt his daughter the way he had.
"Hanna...I know what I did was unforgivable, but you have to see it from our point of view..."
"Really Alpheaus? You're point of view? You throw you're very young children out on the street because you're son made a mistake? Not very good parenting! You scarred me for life! I have so many issues because of you. Because of you I am scared of everything! I'm hated! By everyone!"
Her father looked down at his hands now before looking back up into his daughter's broken, angry eyes.
"I don't even want you to be my father anymore. I want Gaius as my father, but it looks like that will never happen, so I guess I will have to live on my own now and you know what I am okay with that!"
She was sobbing now as she wrapped her arms around herself now as if trying to hug herself. Things were silent for a moment and she was about to shut the door when she heard a voice she didn't expect to hear that night.
"Sir I suggest you return to you're home now or face the consequences" Gaius said to Alpheaus who nodded quickly and held up his hands. With one last glance at his daughter, he turned and rushed away.
Hanna stood in shock now, not even being able to move or close the door. It was like nothing was real to her in that moment. That is until she felt Gaius take her hand and pull her into his arms, hugging her tightly. "Hanna..." he said softly, kissing her forehead. "I am so sorry. I had no idea."
He had overheard her and her father that night and was shocked and saddened that he was one of the reasons she was so depressed now. Hanna buried her face into his chest now hugging him just as tightly as he was. He led her back inside the house now, walking her upstairs to her room, sitting her down on her bed before sitting next to her, pushing some hair out of her face before taking her hands in his.
"What would you say to me adopting you?" he asked after a few moments of silence.
Hanna lifted up her head slowly, the exhaustion on her face evident. "I've wanted that since I was fourteen" she said shakily as Gaius wiped some of her tears away before placing his forehead on her's.
"That long?" he asked gently, pulling her into his arms. He could feel her shaking as he kissed her forehead, rubbing his hands up and down her arms. "Hanna..."
He knew that all this was partly his fault and he knew he had to fix it somehow. He would do anything to make this up to her. He looked down at the tired girl before laying back on her bed, pulling her with him as she placed her head on his chest, one of her hands still clutching his hand.
"Get some sleep sweetheart. We can pack up tomorrow and I will take care of the adoption process since Quintus has to be the one to handle it. Though you may want to talk to him soon Hanna. He looked heartbroken when you ran out earlier today."
Hanna rolled her eyes now and sighed. "He broke up with me daddy. I hardly think I should talk to him anytime soon."
To hear her call him daddy made him happy. He kissed her head a couple times before pushing her hair back out of her face. "You have time sweetheart" he said softly, holding onto her tighter than before. "Now get some sleep. We can talk more in the morning."
"Love you daddy" she whispered as she drifted off to sleep.
"Love you more Hanna" he said softly, kissing her forehead as he rubbed her back soothingly.
Over the next couple weeks, things started to get better for Hanna. She had settled into her new home, hung out with Marcus everyday and spent time with her two new little brothers who adored her. The Quintus situation wasn't exactly ideal, but she was still upset with him if she was honest with herself. He had really broken her heart and it was going to take awhile for things to be alright.
One day she was sitting on her bed laughing and talking with her best friend when Gaius came into the room with a bouquet of flowers and a note. Marcus raised an eyebrow as Gaius handed them to his daughter. "Who?"
Gaius shook his head and sat down next to Hanna and her best friend. "No idea" he said, kissing his daughter's forehead as he pulled her into his side.
It was as though Hanna had been his little girl his whole life now as far as Gaius was concerned. She was everything to him and all he wanted to do was love her and protect her. Be the father that she never had. She deserved it after all she had been through.
Hanna looked between her father and her friend before opening the card that had her name on the front.
Hanna,
I am so very sorry. I really messed things up. Can you forgive me?
I love you.
Quintus
Tears filled her eyes now as she jumped off the bed, kissing her father's cheek and hugging Marcus before slipping her shoes on. She ran out of the room quickly after that. Those three words had done it for her.
She raced down the streets of Capernaum now, careful not to run into anyone. She had given Quintus enough time and if she was honest with herself, she had missed him more than she thought. Once the anger had gone out of her weeks ago, she was starting to realize how much she cared for him herself.
She raced right past his secretary and into his office, not even taking the time to catch her breath. "I love you too Quintus" she said tearfully now as he turned from the window to face her, a mix of happiness and relief on his face.
Before Hanna even knew what was happening, she was pulled into his arms as he kissed her passionately. She wound her arms around his neck as he pulled her even closer to him. She had missed the feel of his lips on her's and the way he hugged her. She couldn't help but laugh as his lips trailed down the side of her face as he swept her up and carried her to the couch.
They couldn't stop kissing now. It was like they had to make up for all the lost time they had been away from eachother. His lips trailed down her face once more as she clutched at his bright red cloak. He knew of her intention to wait for marriage and she was aware of it as well, but that didn't stop Quintus from placing kisses all over her face and lips.
They're lips connected once more as Hanna's arms slid around his neck. It seemed like hours until they heard a cross between a gasp and a shout behind them. It was Atticus and he looked quite flustered. "I'll just uh...I'll come back tomorrow" he said as he rushed out of the room, causing the couple to laugh.
"Well done darling" Quintus said laughing as he pushed Hanna's hair behind her ear as he gazed down at her lovingly. "You just made my worst enemy run out of the room in fear. I should keep you around the office more often."
"I would actually love that" she said, kissing him gently as he ran his hands up and down her sides, gazing into her eyes.
"Hanna I am truly sorry darling. I made a horrible mistake..."
Hanna pulled him down for another kiss, smiling up at him. "I forgive you" she whispered softly, rubbing her nose against his gently. "I love you."
"I love you too" he said, capturing her lips in a gentle kiss once more.
Hanna was sure that things would be better now.
