He was backstage of the Arena she was performing, he looked intently at the HD screen of a TV that showed her concert live. It was a moment she was shown close up and he saw something in her eyes that was very familiar. 'She was afraid, just like yesterday morning in the bathroom,' he thought to himself. 'Could it be that she was afraid of being shot like the few nights before?'
'Damn it, he should of assured her more. The security inside the arena was impeccable, couldn't have been higher, he and his siblings had basically checked everyone who entered the arena.'
"Hey, Freddy," he stopped the boy on his tracks.
"Yes, Klaus?"
"You can talk to her in between songs right, tell her important stuff?"
"Sure, what do you want to tell her?"
"I want to talk to her myself, lead me to the right person"
"Okay, James, the one with the green shirt over there is in charge of communications."
"Thanks,"
Caroline was on stage, the last change of outfits was over and the concert was nearing the end. She just had two songs left and then the extras.
"So, guys, our time together is nearing an end." The public seemed dissatisfied with that.
"But let's make the most of our time together. I know you all know the hits by heart, so let's sing The Lover together. I'll sing first and then you repeat it.
After she had sang the first few lines, the fans sang it perfectly after her. During witch his voice sounded in her ears.
'Caroline, sweetheart, don't be scared, nothing will happen to you on stage. Me and my siblings personally took care of it.'
Tears stung to her eyes, but she quickly thought of something else, rather less sweet then him understanding how scared she was. She was moved by it, she really was, because she hadn't said a word about it to anyone the whole time she was off stage to change her outfit.
"Does me claiming that make you any less scared? If no, say "It's really lovely to see you all here tonight.", if yes, say "I wish this night didn't have to end."
Caroline found the camera that was currently live and looking at it, said, "Oh, boy, you make me wish this night didn't have to end."
And then for the last songs she gave the New Orleans fans the best show of the entire tour.
** When she got off the stage and walked down the stairs, he was there in an instant, without saying anything they walked side by side backstage where everyone congratulated her on a job well done.
"What happened to you out there? For the last songs you were phenomenal. Absolutely magnificent!" One of her dancers told her.
Caroline blushed knowing that the reason was next to her now. Looking at Klaus, he seemed a little far away, maybe even a bit displeased.
"I don't know, I guess, I wanted to give the New Orleans fans something extra. Last night and all." She quipped and that earned her a huge applause from everyone who was touring with her. Except Klaus, who still seemed displeased with something.
"Something wrong, Klaus?" She whispered to him, all the while smiling and taking congratulations from everyone.
"No, love, everything is okay, no security breaches anywhere. It's quiet, which Is a good thing."
"Then what's wrong with you,"
"Nothing, it's nothing, we'll talk at the hotel."
"I have to show up at the after-party, Klaus."
"Yeah, I know, we'll make a quick stop there and then head straight to the hotel."
So they did, she was sure to show up for the picture and talked to a few people and then she and Klaus left the scene.
When they got to the hotel, Caroline was turning to head straight to the elevators but his hand on her arm stopped her in her tracks.
"Actually sweetheart, do you mind coming to the garden with me."
"Why?"
Klaus couldn't help but roll his eyes, "I have a surprise for you, okay?"
Caroline was stunned but didn't say anything. When they walked to the garden, she noticed little lights everywhere and the pavement was all covered with red roses.
"What is this, Klaus?" She asked curiously.
"Patience, love."
They continued to walk forward until she saw it. A table was decorated with more red roses and dinner was served for two. It was already waiting for them.
She stopped in her tracks, "It's the date, isn't it, the thank you date we agreed upon?"
"Yes, yes it is."
"I thought we agreed it wouldn't be a romantic date?"
He managed to pull a look of surprise and ask, "You find this romantic? I assure it wasn't my intention."
For a second she thought he was serious and then she laughed and punched his arm. He feigned getting hurt by that.
A bit later at the dinner.
"So you know now, we are 1000 years old and we have killed a lot of people over the centuries, both human and supernatural beings."
"Has anything changed or are you still killing and maiming effortlessly," she asked in a whisper.
"We did actually, until we started protecting you. Since we made an agreement a few days ago that it will all stop as I will be getting a public profile."
"Oh my god, you are right."
"About?" He asked amused.
"You're right, being with me, accompanying me everywhere…Klaus you can't do that, not without coming out of the shadows."
"Caroline, love, I have everything figured out. You'll release a press release tomorrow with all the details about why I am suddenly by your side all the time."
"I'll agree to everything but a fake relationship with you."
"That's definitely wasn't the game plan, unless you really want that kind of attention drawn to you."
"NO, I don't."
Klaus laughed out loud.
"Then what is it, what's the story?"
"The story is pretty much the same as it happened in real life. You say that in light of what happened, I offered to use my much more professional security and you being so afraid took me up on that offer. You don't have to tell anyone anything more."
"You think I can just tell that to media?"
"Why not, you don't owe anyone anything. You just tell before an interview that you won't talk about the Mikaelson family and that's that."
"You don't know the media, they are going to make money of assumptions alone." She whined.
Klaus just laughed with no worry.
"So what, Caroline, if they draw the conclusion that we are star-crossed lovers. Would it be so bad to be associated with me like that? You and I know the truth and that's all that matters. Or should matter to you."
Caroline took a minute to think this over and Klaus patiently waited.
"Okay, I tell everyone that but If me and you getting together becomes so huge that you can't go anywhere without paparazzies, then don't complain to me, okay."
"You really think that you're that important?" Klaus asked in a condescending tone of voice.
"What?"
"You heard me."
Caroline put the handkerchief on the table and walked off, but not before telling him, "Asshole."
** Later that night, she was already in bed but the Sand Man didn't want to come at all. So she looked at her social media accounts. It was the usual likes and comments. She really loved the feedback and she didn't really care for her reputation over all, but seeing snarky comments, one by one on her profile, that hurt as it was. She couldn't imagine seeing them coming in in thousands. She didn't think she was oh so famous, but it was the reality that she had gotten used to. She didn't understand where Klaus got the impression that she was thinking that she was better than others. Speaking of the devil, Freddy called her to let her know that Klaus was on his way up.
"Now?"
"Now! And he seems wasted."
"Great. Let him in."
"He's just being polite and letting you know ahead. He mumbled something about pissing you off enough as it is. What happened?"
"Nothing, don't worry about it."
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in, Klaus."
And in he came, going straight to the bar where he had already put enough bourbon to last them both for a year. Suddenly it dawned on her that she didn't know what a wasted hybrid was like. So she was a little afraid to go near him. But in a minute she found out why she should have gone to him instead of him coming to her.
Now she was sitting on his bed and pouring his heart out.
"I'm so sorry, Caroline. I didn't mean to say it like that. I didn't mean to hurt you like that. Please forgive me." He rambled.
"If I forgive you, will you leave my suite. You're making me anxious."
"Anxious, why would you be anxious, Caroline?"
"Because you are in my bedroom in the middle of the night, wasted and planning on getting even more drunk and, "
"And?"
"And I don't know what to expect from a drunken hybrid."
Klaus laughed. "As much as I fancy you, I would never touch you without your direct approval. You have my word."
"Don't listen to him, Caroline. His word doesn't mean much, compered to Elijah's who you will meet soon enough."
"Kol, what are you doing here, when I'm wasted you are in charge of her security."
Kol went to pour himself a drink too and said, "And everything is dandy with it. Elijah is taking care of it right now, until I talk to the two of you."
Klaus chuckled, "What's on your mind little brother?"
"Have you two thought about making this a fake or not-so-fake relationship for the media?"
"OUT NOW, KOL!" Caroline and Klaus yelled in unison.
"I guess I know now what's with the sour apples between the two already."
"Kol," Klaus warned.
"Okay, leaving already."
When Kol left and closed the door, Caroline felt he has had it.
He jumped up from the bed and went and opened the door and stood there with door ajar and told Klaus to leave.
Klaus walked to her, it seemed to her that he was going to do just that. But then he grabbed the door handle and pushed it close with a bang and in matter of a millisecond, she was in his arms, he had his hands wrapped around her waist from behind and then he whispered, "You performance tonight wasn't phenomenal just during the last songs, it was for the whole show and has been like that since you started performing when you were about 5 years old."
"How do you know about that?"
"I told you I know everything there is to know about you. Everything."
"Then you are well informed, I'd say. But, Klaus, what does it have to do with you being here in the middle of the night?"
"I. Can't. Be. Away. From. You. For. So. Long!"
"What do you mean? We were together the whole day today and the whole day yesterday."
"But not the night!"
"Klaus-" She started but he didn't let her finish, "It's not what you think. Just hear me out, okay?"
"Okay, but let go of me okay and let me breath."
Without having to ask again, Klaus did just that and walked to the windows.
"So?"
"So," He turned around to face her, "What I am suggesting is that from now on, we sleep in the same suite, adjoining rooms."
"You can't be serious?"
"I'm very serious. I need you and I need to know that you are okay."
"You want to take away the last privacy or at least feeling of privacy I have. No, absolutely, not." She said and turned off the lights and went back to bed and pretended to sleep, hoping he would get the hint.
But not 2 seconds later he was by her side, trailing fingers up and down her cheek.
"Please, Caroline, it's the last personal favour I'm going to ask of you."
"Okay, the terms are as follows, take them or leave them." Caroline suddenly told him as she sat up and turned on the lamp on her night stand.
"You leave right now, let me sleep till 8 am, then on Monday, after I have visited home on the weekend, when we get to Miami, you can move in to my room. But not before."
"Caroline-"
"Take it or leave it, Klaus."
He sighed and with a flash, he was gone with the door closing after him.
"Unbelievable!" Caroline muttered to herself. Then it suddenly dawned on her that they hadn't talked about what would happen when she went home for the long weekend. He would come with her but what would she tell her mom about Klaus. Her mother was going to disapprove of him, she was sure.
The next morning, he let her sleep until 8 am. Actually he didn't show up before 8:30 which made her a bit nervous. She was already dressed and at the table, eating when he came in after knocking first.
"Hello, love!"
"Good morning, Klaus."
She didn't really look at him and kept playing with her food. She wasn't the least bit hungry but she didn't want to deal with what made her anxious.
"What now?"
"What do you mean?" She asked, still not looking at him.
"What did I do now?"
"You know," she turned to face him for the first time that morning, "I know it can be overwhelming sometimes, but the world doesn't revolve around Klaus Mikaelson."
With that she stood up and went to the bathroom and locked the door. And started crying. She heard Klaus get a call.
"What? Why am I hearing about this now?"
"And you think it's connected to Caroline somehow?"
"I can't. She's not exactly with me right now."
Klaus raised his voice when he said, "Mind your own business, Kol. She's perfectly safe."
"Caroline, sweetheart, let me in."
"Don't you think we already had this conversation two days ago?"
"Exactly, so do yourself a favour and let me in."
She unlocked the door and walked past him to her bedroom part of the suite.
As she was starting to pack her things for a weekend at home, he stood next to her as she was folding her clothes, "You know, you have people for that."
"I prefer to do it myself," she sobbed.
He tugged at her arm and tried to get her to focus her attention to him, "Hey, hey, come here!"
She surrendered and turned towards him and practically fell in his arms, sobbing that, "I'm so afraid, Klaus."
"Shh, it's going to be okay. I won't let anything happen to you." He patted her hair and tried to calm her down. "Why didn't you tell me? About your friend who was shot?"
"He was just a classmate of mine, who was bartending at the grill. They think that when he didn't have anything useful to say, he was killed point blank. Still, he didn't deserve to die."
"Of course not. But, Caroline, look at me," he told her as he broke their hug apart and forced her to look him in the eye. "You can't go to Mystic Falls now. You understand that?"
Caroline just nodded. "So what now?"
"I'll get one of my private jets ready for take off. We land in Miami today. But you can't walk around in public."
"You want me to stay in the hotel the whole weekend in a city like Miami?" She sobbed.
"I didn't say that. I have a friend there, who has a private beach and as for shopping, If you won't let me do it for you, I can always book some boutiques just for us."
"Okay," she sobbed and continued to pack.
Klaus let her focus on something as trivial as packing and went back to eat breakfast. After that he told her, "I need to feed before we head back to airport, so my brother Elijah is coming to keep you company."
"Okay, sure, no problem," she told him and he left. It wasn't even a minute later, when there was a knock and in came a stranger.
"Who are you?" she said, panicking.
"My name is Elijah. Niklaus didn't tell you I was to come by?"
"Oh, he did, I just didn't think you'd be here so quickly."
"Well, yes, we vampires are a little fast for humans."
"What do you mean by that?"
"I'm sorry, Miss Forbes, but now you lost me."
"I caught the double innuendo. You think I should let your brother more into my life, is that it? Because-"
But Elijah raised his hand to stop her, "I promise you, Miss Forbes, that was not my intention at all. Your business with my brother is your business. It was an innocent comment."
When she didn't say anything, "What got you so on edge?"
"Just the murder of my classmate."
"Let me paraphrase it for you, Miss Forbes "What's got you so on edge concerning my brother?""
"He wants to move in with me and it's moving so fast. We are 24/7 together and how soon until he's sharing my bed?"
Elijah chuckled, "You want him to back off?"
"Yes, no. I don't know."
"Okay, let me ask you this, now that you have spent some time together, do you think you could ever want him In your bed?"
Caroline nodded, "I've never met anyone like him before. He's so intense but if he's not here I grow anxious, like right now."
"I see. I wish you two all the best, he's found the right girl in you."
"That's not helping."
"I'm afraid, I can't say anything helpful. You are falling for him already. It you are going to block him, you are going to hurt yourself more than him. My advice, go with the flow, let him sail the ship. Once you get to the shore, well, then you will find out if it was all worth it."
Caroline stared at him wide eyed. Did Klaus' brother just tell her to jump at the chance to sleep with him? Cause that was what he wanted most of all and going with the flow would mean giving in as soon as things get there.
"I'm sorry, Miss Forbes, I have to go. My brother is already up and will be here in about 15 seconds."
"It was nice meeting you, Elijah."
"You too, Miss Forbes."
She just smiled as he left and Klaus came in the second Elijah left.
"How do you feel now?" Caroline asked him as he took her suitcase.
"Much better, ready for travelling."
Soon they left the hotel and there was a bad surprise waiting for them at the back door: paparazzies, who flashed their cameras in her face as Klaus led her to the limo."
"It's starting, like I told you."
"I know what I signed up for."
"You sure?" Caroline asked him.
"Absolutely."
Luckily, in Miami, somehow they didn't know which hotel they stayed in. Not yet anyway.
They got a really good suite. It had two bedrooms and in between them was the living room area. So she could enjoy a little privacy during night time.
He went to pour himself a drink.
While he was drinking his first glass of bourbon, he suddenly noticed how quiet it was. Panicking, he flashed to her bedroom but relaxed as soon as he found her sleeping in her bed. He just leaned on the door frame and watched her sleep peacefully. He could have done it all night, but he used the remote to pull the curtains on and make the room as dark as possible. Then he took of her shoes and put a blanket on her. Then he closed the door to her room and decided to let her sleep without his watchful eye.
