Chapter 4: A trip to Montauk and goodbyes.

The road to Montauk stretched out before them, a ribbon of asphalt winding its way through the landscape. Percy navigated the car with practiced ease, while his mother, Sally sat in the passenger seat, gazing out at the passing scenery and occasionally a few words were spoken. Nostalgia hung in the air, wrapped around them like a warm blanket.

"Remember when you were just a little boy, Percy?" Sally began, her voice tinged with fondness. "You used to get so excited every time we came here."

Percy couldn't help but smile at the memory. "Yeah, Mom. I'd practically jump out of my seat with excitement."

Sally chuckled softly, her eyes fixed on the road. "You always had a special connection with the sea, even before you knew the truth about your heritage."

"I guess it was in my blood," Percy replied, turning his attention back to the sparkling waters of Long Island Sound. The waves rolled in rhythmically, like an old lullaby, soothing his soul.

As they neared Montauk, Percy felt a sense of familiarity wash over him. The town hadn't changed much over the years, and that was a comforting thought. The last time he was here was before the war with the Titans and it felt like a long time ago. They checked into the same beachfront cabin they had visited so many times before. The scent of saltwater and sunscreen filled the air as Percy set down his duffel bag in his childhood room, which still bore the remnants of his adolescent interests - posters of sea creatures, ship models, and a collection of seashells.

The first day in Montauk was spent just as they had in years past. They strolled along the sandy shoreline, the salt breeze tousling their hair. Percy picked up seashells and skipped stones across the water, while Sally watched him with an affectionate smile.

"Look, Mom!" Percy called out, holding up a particularly colorful seashell. "It's like a rainbow."

Sally examined the shell and nodded with a soft smile. "It's beautiful, Percy. Just like you."

They continued their walk, pausing to write messages in the sand, messages that would be swallowed by the incoming tide. Percy couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment, as if he had returned to a simpler time when all that mattered was the sand beneath his feet and the soothing sound of the waves. Percy found this time cathartic, he felt like he was a child again, ignorant of all the troubles and challenges his future held.

In the evening, they dined at their favorite seafood restaurant by the pier. Percy indulged in a platter of barbeque, cheeseburger, and coke savoring each bite as if it were a taste of home. Sally ordered her usual clam chowder and shared tales of their past visits and all the silly things Percy did when he was an adorable little goofball, evoking laughter and memories.

As night descended upon Montauk, they returned to their cabin, where Percy noticed a collection of old photo albums on a shelf. He picked one up, its pages filled with snapshots of their previous trips to Montauk. Each photograph captured moments of joy and love, with a young Percy flashing his signature mischievous grin and Sally radiating happiness beside him.

Percy couldn't resist flipping through the album, his fingers tracing the edges of the photographs. There were pictures of them building sandcastles, flying kites, and enjoying ice cream on the boardwalk. Others showcased a younger Percy covered in sea salt, a triumphant grin on his face after catching his first fish, which he insisted on taking home with them but couldn't.

Sally joined him, and they spent hours reminiscing about the past. Percy learned more about his early years, and the stories made him appreciate the sacrifices his mother had made to keep him safe.

Eventually, Sally came to the topic he hoped his mom wouldn't ask about, the details of the war against Gaia, though he didn't want to tell her, he knew she deserved to know. So he tried telling her a watered down version while making it sound silly.

"Mom," he began, leaning back in his chair, "you won't believe the kind of things I've been up to lately. I mean, remember that time we faced off against the Minotaur at Camp Half-Blood? That was child's play compared to what I've been dealing with."

Sally raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Go on, Percy."

"Well," he continued, "we fought giants the size of skyscrapers, battled sea monsters that could swallow a cruise ship whole, and even ventured into the depths of Tartarus itself."

Sally's eyes widened with concern. "Tartarus? Percy, that's... that's beyond anything I could have imagined."

Percy shrugged, trying to downplay the severity. "Yeah, well, it wasn't exactly a vacation spot. But hey, I survived. And the best part? We are all okay, the war is over and I am finally getting a break."

Sally couldn't help but smile at her son's irreverent sense of optimism, even in the face of such challenges. "You always did have a way of finding hope in the darkest of situations."

Percy grinned. "It's my superpower, Mom."

Their conversation drifted to lighter topics, and they talked about their plans for the remainder of their time in Montauk. They decided to revisit their favorite spots - the ice cream shop on the boardwalk, the hidden cove where Percy had caught his first fish, and the lighthouse that stood as a sentinel over the town.

The following day, they set out on their adventures, and Percy couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu as he walked along the boardwalk with a dripping ice cream cone in hand.

"Remember the time I tried every flavor at this place, Mom?" Percy said, his mouth full of ice cream.

Sally laughed. "Yes, and you ended up with a stomach ache for a week."

Percy grinned sheepishly. "Yeah, but it was totally worth it."

They wandered down to the hidden cove, the sun-dappled water lapping gently at the shore. Percy found a familiar spot by the rocks and cast his line into the water. He wasn't expecting to catch anything - it was more about reliving old memories. Not like he needed it to catch fish, he could just call them, even if he did catch something he would just talk to them and let them go.

"Mom, remember how excited I was when I caught my first fish here?" Percy said, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.

Sally nodded, her eyes misty with memories. "I do, Percy. You were so proud of that little fish."

As the day turned to evening, they made their way to the lighthouse. Percy climbed the winding stairs to the top, Sally following close behind. From the lantern room, they gazed out at the expansive view of the coastline. The sun began its descent, casting a warm, golden hue over the ocean.

Percy turned to his mother, a soft smile on his face. "Thanks for bringing me here, Mom. This place... it's like coming home."

Sally placed a hand on his shoulder, her eyes filled with love and pride. "You are home, Percy. No matter where life takes you, you'll always have a place here and with us. I know you will become a god but that doesn't mean you don't need a place you can call home. I will always love you and always remember that."

As they descended from the lighthouse, Percy couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for these moments with his mother. He had faced gods and titans, ventured into the depths of Tartarus, and returned as a soon-to-be god himself. Yet, it was here, in Montauk, with his mother, that he found true peace and happiness.

As they settled into their cabin for the night, Percy knew that these memories would stay with him forever. They were a reminder of the simple joys and the unbreakable bond he shared with his mother, a bond that could withstand the challenges of the mortal and immortal worlds alike.

In Montauk, under the starlit sky, Percy Jackson felt truly at home. And as he closed his eyes, the memories of their earlier visits and the warmth of his mother's love surrounded him like a protective embrace, ensuring that he would carry these moments with him on his journey to godhood and beyond.

The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, orange glow over the Montauk shoreline. Percy and Sally sat on the cabin's porch, watching as the waves rolled in and out, the rhythmic sound providing a soothing backdrop to their conversation.

Percy couldn't shake the feeling of contentment that had settled over him during their time in Montauk. It was as if the weight of the world had momentarily lifted, and he could simply be a son spending quality time with his mother.

"Are you sure about this, Percy?" Sally asked, her voice tinged with concern.

Percy nodded with a determined smile. "Yeah, Mom. It's time for me to see the world beyond demigod battles and prophecies. I want to experience life as a regular guy, even if it's just for a little while."

Sally placed a hand on his shoulder, her touch filled with motherly affection. "I understand, Percy. Just promise me you'll stay safe out there."

"I promise, Mom," Percy replied, giving her a tight hug. "Besides, I won't be completely alone. I've got Blackjack and Mrs. O'Leary with me."

Sally turned to Percy with a soft smile. "I'm so glad we had this time together, Percy. It's been a while since we've been able to just relax and enjoy each other's company."

Percy nodded, a genuine warmth in his eyes. "Me too, Mom. I needed this more than I realized."

They fell into a comfortable silence, each lost in their thoughts, the memories of their time in Montauk like a cherished treasure. But Percy knew that his journey couldn't be put on hold forever. He had a destiny to fulfill, and it was time to say goodbye, at least for now.

"Mom," Percy began, his voice tinged with a mixture of sadness and determination, "I've got to leave soon. There are things I need to do, places I need to go."

Sally turned to him, her gaze filled with understanding. "I know, Percy. I've always known that your life would be extraordinary, and I would never hold you back from your path."

Percy reached out and took his mother's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I promise I'll stay in touch, Mom."

Sally smiled, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I know you will, Percy. And I'll be right here, waiting to hear from you."

They sat in silence for a while longer, the weight of impending goodbyes heavy in the air. Percy's thoughts turned to his plans for the future, the places he wanted to visit, and the people he wanted to see.

"Mom, before I go, there are a few people I need to say goodbye to," Percy said, his expression serious.

Sally nodded. "Of course, Percy. You should take the time to do that."

The following morning, Percy and Sally headed back to New York City. Percy had made a list of people he wanted to visit, and the first stop was Camp Half-Blood.

As they approached the entrance to the camp, Percy couldn't help but feel a surge of nostalgia. Camp had been his home for so many years, and it was where he had forged lasting friendships and faced countless challenges.

Percy walked through the camp, greeting old friends and mentors along the way. He spent time with Chiron at the Big House, catching up on camp news and reminiscing about their adventures. He said his goodbyes. He also visited the stables, where he told Blackjack and Mrs. O'Leary it was time to leave.

They arrived at the cabin Annabeth lived in, and Percy took a deep breath before knocking. Annabeth answered the door, her eyes widening in surprise when she saw Percy.

"Percy!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug. "I can't believe you're here!"

Percy hugged her back just as tightly, his heart aching at the thought of saying goodbye. "I wanted to see you before I leave, Wise Girl."

Annabeth pulled back slightly, her gray eyes searching his face. "Leave? You are already leaving? Do you even have a plan for where you are going?"

Percy took a step back, giving Annabeth some space. He knew he wouldn't see her for a while. "Yes, I am leaving, I even have an itinerary, mom helped me make one.

Pacific Coast Highway, USA: As I make my way back for the final leg of my journey, I'll go on a road trip along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. I'll soak in coastal views, stop at charming seaside towns, and perhaps catch a few waves. That's my plan."

Annabeth was surprised with the fact that Percy had thought of this in advance, even if the plan was rough and he needed to iron out the details it was more planning than she expected. It looked like Percy had put a lot of thought into this already. "I am jealous now, I should have taken up on your offer and joined you. Percy, though these places are amazing, how are you gonna travel to different parts of the world?"

Percy had already thought about this and it was an easy answer. "I have four modes of transport right? Land and water due to my dad's gift, air because of Blackjack and I can also shadow travel because I am taking my favorite hellhound with me."

Though that slightly placated Annabeth she was still worried. "Percy be careful, you might face fluctuations in your power levels, we don't know much about the side effects of the transition, I would rather have you here so that I can be there if you need help, but I understand this might be the only chance for you to travel without any responsibilities.'

Percy was touched by her concern and understood her rationale. "I'll be careful Annabeth and it'll be okay, I am very good at winging things anyway, don't worry. Now I have to leave. Bye Annabeth."

Annabeth gave Percy a final hug and watched him start to walk back towards his mom who was waiting for him outside the camp.

Finally, they returned to their own apartment, where Percy packed his bags with the essentials for his journey. He also took a moment to reflect on the adventures he had experienced and the challenges he had overcome. He knew that becoming a god was just the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one filled with unknown challenges and adventures.

As Percy stood by the window, looking out at the city that had been his home for so long, he felt a mixture of excitement and trepidation. He was ready to embrace his destiny, to explore the world and fulfill his newfound responsibilities.

Sally joined him at the window, her hand resting on his shoulder. "Are you ready, Percy?"

Percy turned to his mother, his eyes filled with determination. "As ready as I'll ever be, Mom."

The next morning, Percy said his final goodbyes to Sally, promising to stay safe and return whenever he could. With his bags packed, he stepped out of their apartment and onto the path of his new adventures. He got on Blackjack who would take them to the sea so that they could begin their adventure.

Percy Jackson, the demigod and soon-to-be god, walked away from his past and toward a future filled with untold possibilities. As he set off on his journey, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the adventures that awaited him.
