Summary:

Makabe Kaguya's life is the darkest version of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.

"You ran away. You lied to me. You could've taken me with you, but you chose the coward's way out."

"The head of the household wouldn't have allowed it. And he barely knows the half of it."

"Niisan…Will we be free one day?"

"When the old fart kicks the bucket."

Kaguya scoffed at Subaru's artless response.

"I missed your laugh. It's a treasure."

"You're advocating for our father's demise."

"I'm not murdering anybody! He'll have to roll over eventually!"

"I could do it, Niisan. For us. It could be quick."

"Don't turn yourself into a criminal, Kaguya," Subaru chided his brother.

"Like you said: eventually. Eventually, we'll be exposed. The Makabe clan will burn. Disappear to nothing once it gets out its heir and the family failure are so unwell in their minds. We might as well speed up the process."

"You're not wrong."

"Then WHY? Why haven't you moved on and found somebody normal to love? We were just kids back then! Everything out of my mouth was make-believe! I was scared of the dark and needed my brother to comfort me!"

"But I can't do that. Move on. Because it wasn't just pretend, was it? Your words…"

"I'm disgusting…" Kaguya hated the impossibility of it all.

He was evil!

He was tainted!

His brother should hate him!

If Subaru hated him, he wouldn't face punishment with him when the mask came off, at least!

"I promised to save the princess. Your aniki may have chickened out, but I put the old me behind me and I'm here now, Kaguya."

"Boys can't be princesses."

"Brothers don't marry either, yet I promised the princess that too, didn't I?"

Kaguya blamed The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter for filling his head with impure ideas. Subaru read it to him as a bedtime story.

It was his parents' fault for naming him after the princess in that accursed fairy tale.

"Where can we go?"

"Who knows? The Capital of the Moon? All I know is…This is the sincere me. I won't run anymore, Kaguya. That's the truth."
