Sailors say that once in a few hundred years the Sea guarantees a wish to someone that they consider worthy, this could be to a simple person to the most wise of the rulers.
In this case, after centuries and centuries of not doing it the Sea guaranteed a wish. A simple and gentle fisherwoman on the closest island to the reverse mountain on the East Blue, Polestar Islands, to be the blessed one to get his wish.
Living in the outside north part of the island where the forest was still untouched by the hands of the big portual city that Loguetown was. Not so far from the shore of this forest was a small but tough house in a small clearing hidden between the big trees.
Its old structure was covered in moss and multiple wild plant, fishing nets and baskets, just a few more steps away some lines where hanging with wet clothes and old sheets
And after passing this small but cozy cleare, deeper in the forest so you can see the seashore. An old dock with fishing nets on its planks and two matching fishing rods at one side, a small fisher boat firmly tied to the small dock with a woman getting ready for catch something this day to sell on the town
The wind blows a bit too strong to be safe to get inside the wild waves of the sea, but Cari couldn't care less. These seas were her home. Her safe space. This dock was the place she could come to take a deep breath from all the tragedies on her life in the past few months
She untied the boat from the dock as she jumped into it. The nets and her fishing pole were already stowed on the only deck of the small boat. She sailed as the wind grew stronger each time. Her only objective was to end with the painful memories that crossed her mind each minute of her doing nothing.
By the time she was on her position to throw the nets the winds turned out into a full blown storm
She remembered the times when she and Nasibe, her husband, decided to do these dangerous trips of trying luck fishing in a storm. That day the sea reward them with a big Blue-Finned Elephant Tuna, their best catch to this day
But those opportunities fade away faster than she thought. Nasibe was reclaimed by the sea they loved so dearly in a pirate attack. He was one of the misfortuned few ones that perished that day before the marines did something. She waited for him in their house, far and safe of any danger only to receive the news by some marines in charge to give them
The anguish of the news led to the miscarriage of their three months old baby. The funeral for the child that didn't live to see the sun was traditional. Cari built with her own hands a small boat in the shape of a cradle, with the help of a few friends the tiny boat was finished on time. Her baby was putted inside, wrapped in white sheets the body was given to the Sea for his eternal rest in the cold hug of the waves
Cari didn't go out of the forest to Logetown more than to check how her body was before the loss of her only child with his now lost partner. The trips inside the sea to fishing were nothing more that to get food for herself, the amusement on getting a good catch now didn't warm her heart as it use to do
There was no sense on feeling joy when the two most important persons on her life wasn't there with her to share the feeling anymore
The Sea always wise, the Sea always present, the omnipresent Sea. None couldn't confirm if the Sea had favorites. But everyone always said that the devotees to the sea would be the most loved ones.
Gol D Cari received a gift that stormy day. The sea guaranteed her dying wish of having a family with her husband when the feral waves pulled the nets in a hard move off her hands and caused a bleeding injury in the palm of her hand. causing her to fell and hit her head hard into the deck
As her view darkened she could see how the sea dropped something on the deck with one of its waves that pushed the small ship

Gol D Cari was a strong woman. Devoted to the sea and its currents along with her husband. Prayers and traditions ran through her blood more than she would ever know. And like any other D, she was a daughter of the Sea. The title was more literal than everyone believed, a descendant of the first gods and a distant relative of the sea itself. Salt water ran in her blood as did the urge to be within its waves.
Gol D. Cari, descendant of the god of voyages, discovery and destiny. Born with a purpose and the last of her line. The sea granted her wish. the threads of destiny finally began to move after a thousand years

The loud cries of a baby were the trigger for her to finally wake up. Slowly she gets up on her hands, reaching her head with care in case of any injury, only to be interrupted by a new and louder cry than before.
Her body moves automatically. Reaching the small cradle similar if not the same to the one she was forced to do for her now lost child and carefully picking up the ball of white blankets that were inside.
In a sudden movement, a small hand burst through the blankets. Cari fastly gets the blankets out of the way of her view when the cries of the baby continue with more urgency.
Once the Baby's head is free, the cries slowly turn into small hiccups and sobs. And there she is. Cari, with an unknown baby in her arms, who feels just as the perfect mix of her and Nasibe. A toothless smile is all she needs to burst into big and thick tears.
A painful and low howl. The sound of a mother who lost her child. And now she has him just in her arms. Safe. Alive. Healthy
The sea rocks the small ship gently trying to comfort its daughter.
Cari is loved by the sea, and the sea makes her wish come true. Have her son back in her arms, alive. Having her family back with her is just what she wanted. Even if her husband isn't here, she has her son back. Blessed by the Sea, even if he is doomed to go back into her arms once again in the future
There is always a reason why the sea brings back someone.
Destiny the people calls it
Love for her children the D's call it
A soft giggle put Cari out her stupor. Making her finally stand up and see where they are.
Her dock on the beach is the answer. The Mother Sea brings them back home safely.
Cari slowly got on the dock. No fish were captured for eating, but that doesn't bother her at all. She is now totally and completely focused on getting her baby inside the safety and warmth of her home.
Inside. Somehow, the chaos caused by her depression after the loss of Nasibe and her baby is all cleaned up. The dirty dishes are now clean in their original place, her cloth that once was spread all over the floor is clean and folded up on the table.
The old stains of alcohol and food on the floor are nowhere to be seen, just the smell of the soft breeze from the beach is what she can find instead of the smell of the humidity that where the normal after this six months of mourning
She doesn't ask questions, she knows who did this. She'll have to get the best offering she can found next full moon when the sea level is in its highest point
At this point she could pay with her own life. But by now that won't be necessary and she knows it. One of these days she will have to leave her son alone. She will have to go back to the Sea's arms in exchange for bringing her son back to live.
But by now she won't care. She will spend the rest of her years with her son. teaching him how to live in this world and helping him to grow stronger. Until the time comes and she have to leave of his side and go back to The Mother Sea's brest
Her son.
Her baby
Gol D Roger
Hatsu the sea whispers
Her little bringer of the destiny

Roger grows like weeds. And before Cari can realize her son will be 16 next month. The end of the year is just at the turn. Just as her life.
She knows it. She feels it in her bones with each passing day, she's as weak as she's ever been. Lifting fishing nets filled to the top with fresh fish from the insides of the sea now is impossible. And each time she laughs too much or speaks too loud she coughs small stains of blood.
Roger, as the good son he is, has been taking care of her since the first symptoms started. The doctors couldn't say what it was but she knew. After all, she has been living in borrowed years and soon she will have to return to The Mother arms
And as the days of her last month on earth pass. The good memories come with them
.
.
.
A little three year old Roger ran up to her from the beach. She's been watching him the whole time. the view of the ocean as beautiful as ever beckoning her attention until she feels a tug on her shirt
and there he is Roger, her little destiny bearer, her way to new and better days, tugging at his shirt with his tiny fists, sand all over his face and completely drenched in sea water
"Mama mama!" he said with a beaming smile. His straw hat that was once Nasibe's now on his head, too big for a three year old boy.
"Mother said that I had other name!" He exclaimed. Innocence filling his voice, those chubby baby cheeks that make her wanted to bite them until his little baby burst into laughter
"Oh?~ And how is that my little bright path?" She answered. Holding her head with her hand off the sand. looking at those beautiful and bright silver eyes that her son had
"Hatsu!" The boy answered. His eyes lighting up just with the names pronunciation
"Oh?~ is that so my little bright path?~" she says. a smile on her face.
She knows what that name means.
Hatsu.
The first son of Mother Sea, God of voyages, discoveries and destiny
All the D's know their god's names. Remaining unknown for everyone else that is not of trust. the names of the old gods have been forgotten among the world. only to be remembered by their descendants and followers of ol times that now are almost extinct or remain inside of their own countries
An excited nod is the answer of her little boy. And she knows, he can't say that name outloud where everyone could hear. By any chance she is letting the government to take the opportunity of stop the dawn to come
And as she knows this. She know that gods aren't ones to broke their promises, and less to their loved ones
She softly take Roger's face on her hands, and irresistible to do, she squished his son's cheeks winning a loud and long "mooooom" of the now annoyed boy
"Listen my little bright path" she starts, and roger feels the change of her tone. Knowing that what his mom is going to say is something of high importance, something that he can't forget no matter what. "You have to promise something to me"
She is now looking at her son directly at his silver eyes. He is totally focused on his mom words as she continues "You won't say that name to anyone, unless mother have give its explicit approval of to who you will say it or if you feel they are worth your total trust"
She slowly drops Roger's face to immediately pull her hand in front of the little boy
"It's a pinky promise, understand? you can't break it. No matter what"
The small hand of her son soon after seal the promise
A serious look on his silver eyes, determined to not break this promise with his mom.
"I promise," he says. The seriousness of an old god faded long ago, is now back in his childish eyes. Making him look older and wise, as if the weight of the same world is on its back. And with that name it sure be like that

Is only a week before Roger's birthday. and he should be excited.
And oh he sure it is. But he can't leave his mother now. Not on her deathbed.
Not when she was there when he broke his arm climbing a tree that both of his mother told him not to.
Not when she was there when he had his first narcolepsy attack.
Not when she was there for his first successful fishing and hunt
So he stays with his mom.
She is now completely unconscious to the world. Her hands are cold as the water of the sea but her chest is still going up and down. Roger is holding her hand sitting at her side. His head placed in his mother bed in a light sleep
The weak movement of his mother's hand woke him fully up. Making him to fastly get his head up. His eyes wide open as he watches her mother dark chocolate eyes for a last time
"Oh my dear light path" Cari whispers. not strong enough to let her voice out at a normal volume. But that isn't necessary. Roger can hear her as the strong voice of her mother that been calling him more and more since the start of the month
He hears his mom voice as he hears the winds telling stories or singing old and forgotten songs in a forbidden language
He can hear her mom's heart slowly stopping to bet as she says her last words to him
"I lost you once but mother was merciful and bringed you back to me" tears started to fall from her beautiful eyes as she said "I would like Nasibe to meet you. You and him are so similar"
Her hand reached his face, just as all the times she did when she was healthy. The lovely touch of her mom bringed him memories of better days.
Tears started to fall over Roger's eyes. He knew after that his mom was going to pass away and go back to Mother Sea's brest
"I'm glad i got you back Hatsu" She cleaned a loos tear with her hand "Be careful my bright path" Her eyes had started to close and the already weak grip on his face was getting weaker "I love you… my son"
Her cold hand was placed on the bed with care by Roger
A soft and warm kiss was placed on the forehead of Cari…
Roger started the preparatives right away

Cari's funeral was as the traditions dictated it.
Whispered in his ears by his mother he did everything as the old Gods farwell their loosed ones
The boat with her body wrapped in white sheets and covered in different kind of flowers and her most important possessions was released to the sea back into his mother arms once again
And soon after his birthday came
"OOH!" Roger exclaimed "Hey, That's a nice ship!"
"I stole it." the man said as he took a sip of his flask "My house burned out so I'm living here"
"Yeah? And what's your name?" Roger said. A bag with all of his most important things inside. His straw hat covering his eyes of the sunlight and projecting a shadow direct over his eyes
"Rayleigh"
"I'm Roger! I think we were destined to meet, Rayleigh!"
