The Legacy of the Olympians

Heroes of the Next Generation

Chapter 1: A New Chapter

Growing up as the son of Zeus had been tough. The expectations of the lightning-wielding boy to step into the footsteps of his father, the greatest hero North America had ever seen? It had been an immense pressure for Jason and it had accompanied him throughout high school.

And then high school ended and Jason finally found his voice. He finally spoke up on what he wanted. It was kind of ironic though, despite now finally doing what he was truly passionate about, what he wanted to do as a job, he once again found himself in the shadow of one of his parents.

The Melpomene Academy of Acting in Los Angeles was one of the most prestigious acting schools in the US. It was also the school his mother used to go to. The halls were lined with movie posters of their alumni, including Jason's mother's greatest hits. Here, he wasn't Jason Grace, son of Zeus Grace, he was Jason Grace, son of Beryl Grace. He was measured against his mother.

Which was tough too, but with the experience he had with being seen as the son of Zeus, he knew how to handle it. And aside from his experience, he also had the support of his family, boyfriends and friends. Bit ironic to him still, that he'd really befriended Drew Tanaka at the academy, after how they had no real interactions during high school.

"Babes, I'm home! Anyone else here? Hello—o," he yelped as he got tackled. "Ah, hello, cutie."

Mrs. O'Leary yelped and licked his face. Nico's pet hell-hound. The horse-sized dog was such a sweetheart. If only she was aware of her own size, because she was not a lap-dog. Once she finally allowed him to get up from underneath her, he ventured deeper into the apartment.

"...Aw," Jason smiled softly. "He's so cute when he's asleep."

Nico laid curled together on the deck-chair on their balcony, deep asleep. Okay so perhaps Zeus had been onto something by springing for an apartment for Jason to share with both his boyfriends. Actually living with Nico and Percy was amazing. They'd moved in together about three weeks ago, starting this new chapter in their relationship. Being in a long-distance relationship before – with Jason in Los Angeles, Percy in San Francisco and Nico in Venice – had been hard. Straining on their relationship even. There were different hardships to living together though, as all three of them slowly started to realize. First and foremost, they were happy to see each other every day, kiss as much as they wanted to, but they quickly noticed that there had been perks to the distance.

Apparently, Jason snored. Or so he had been informed. Nico ate entirely too much fast food, he had eaten a Happy Meal for breakfast last week. The scent, that early, it had turned Jason's stomach. And sharing a bathroom with Percy was actual torture, that boy could spend an hour showering because he loved water that much, it was absolutely infuriating.

Small, stupid things like those, but they were now noticing them and it was irritating. What was also irritating was sharing space when irritated. Because the perks of long-distance relationships? When Jason had been annoyed by something Percy or Nico did, he could just flip his phone over and ignore it for an hour or two to get his head straight again. Not so much when they literally shared a bed. There was no turning the phone off and going to bed early, because the person he was irritated with was in the same bed. And that... well, that all three of them were still trying to figure out.

But it was okay. They were on a new chapter and it was only the first. This was a new part of their lives and they still had time to find their footing, as they had every time so far.

"But you do know he's asleep out here because you snored all night, right?"

Jason glowered as he turned around. The glower slipped just a little bit, because Percy was down to his boxers, still wet from his shower, towel around his shoulders. Mh. Yummy. Admittedly, it was slightly easier to forget irritations when Jason actually got to see his handsome boyfriends, kiss them and touch them. The physical closeness helped bridge the emotional distance at times.

"My snoring, if it exists, isn't that bad."

Percy smirked, head tilted. "If it exists, huh? You really need us to record it?"

"Nobody's ever complained about this supposed snoring," Jason crossed his arms with a pout.

Approaching him, Percy laid his arms around Jason's neck to pull him closer until they were kissing. Mh. Percy kisses were very effective at melting away Jason's pouts. After another kiss, Jason laid his own arms around Percy's waists to pull him closer.

"So I talked to Mark actually and he made a great suggestion..." Percy stepped away, leading Jason inside to the living room table, picking up a box. "Ta-da. Ear-plugs, for Nico and me."

Jason huffed. He didn't like Mark much, but that was actually a good idea. Which he wasn't going to say out loud, because again, he did not like Mark much. The guy worked at the hero agency where Percy and Nico were currently working. That had been the idea, both moving to Los Angeles, where Jason was finishing school, and working under a hero to learn from someone new. New experiences and perspectives, knowledge that both Percy and Nico wanted to learn. Because each hero had their very unique approach to the job – formed by the environment they were in and the power-set they had too. So it would benefit their future to learn from different teachers.

Which was all great! Only that there was Mark. Mark, who smiled for too long at Percy and looked at Percy with such intense eyes, whose touches lingered just a few seconds too long, in Jason's opinion. But Percy was such a physical person, he'd always hugged his friends and cuddled with them. And that had never bothered Jason, because all those friends had been a part of Percy's life before Jason got together with him. It... was weirdly different now though, now that he was Percy's boyfriend and this new person came into Percy's life and he was just so clearly flirting with Percy, but Percy was so friendly, he didn't notice, and Jason didn't want to be a dick who told his boyfriend to not be so affectionate. So Jason was just privately judging Mark, that was all.

"How was work, love?" Jason asked instead of dwelling on Mark. "You saved a lot of lives?"

"I mean, I guess," Percy tilted his head, inviting neck-kisses. "It's... It was good. Yeah."

Percy knew he was being awkward, but what was he supposed to say? He loved Nico, but he hated working with Nico? And he couldn't say that to Jason, who was dating them both, because they had that problem before, where one of them was stuck between the chairs. It was stupid.

"You do know that you have like the worst poker-face ever, right?" Jason trailed kisses along Percy's shoulders and neck. "C'mon. What is it? Tell me."

"It's..." Percy made a face and groaned, letting himself fall on the couch. "It's stupid, okay?"

"If it frustrates you, it's not stupid," countered Jason.

The blonde stood in front of him with his arms crossed over his chest, glaring down at Percy. Urgh. How could one evade that glare? That one, Percy knew, Jason had gotten from his dad actually. He wondered if Jason was aware of that? No, brain, stay on track.

"It's that him and I don't work well together."

Nico's voice was rough with sleep, his hair was messy, which was just so adorable and always made Percy want to ruffle it. Both Jason and Percy turned toward the sleepy son of Hades. Ruffling his hair a couple times, Nico stepped up to the two of them and sat down on the other couch, opposite the one Percy was sitting on. Huh. So Nico had noticed that too.

"...Yeah, that," admitted Percy after a beat.

"Huh?" Jason blinked confused, looking from Percy to Nico and back. "Wait what?"

"He is so stubborn!"

Nico and Percy both paused and stared at each other after having said the exact same thing. Huh. But then that shouldn't be too much of a surprise. They were both very head-strong. Neither of them had ever expected that to become an issue though. For some reason, both had thought they'd work together as smoothly in the field as they did in the bedroom.

Jason sat down on the table between them. "How is this something you're only realizing now?"

"We never..." Nico motioned around vaguely. "We were on different teams in high school. We were in different countries for college. We... never worked together in the field before."

"And what's the problem?" asked Jason patiently. "Aside from you two being thick-headed. Because I feel like that's something all three of us knew beforehand."

Both Percy and Nico pouted slightly at that, which only made Jason huff amused. Sighing, Percy leaned forward some, resting his elbows on his knees. Jason was right though; talking about it was a good idea. When they talked to each other, they could maybe figure something out.

"He doesn't take directions," Percy said, before turning to look at Nico. "You don't take directions. I tell you to do something, you bullheadedly run ahead doing something else."

"Oh please," Nico snorted. "You don't even give me a chance to tell you something, you just storm ahead. You're so reckless, always working on gut instinct instead of laid out plans."

"My gut instincts deliver the plans," argued Percy annoyed. "I have a plan in my head."

"Very useless in there," Nico huffed and shook his head. "You gotta learn to share it."

"What for? Every time I try, you run off not listening anyway."

"O—Okay, I think we have the answer there," Jason heaved a sigh. "Don't put two alpha males into the same position, they'll fight for leadership."

Percy sputtered at that and Nico made an offended noise himself. Which suggested that just maybe Jason was onto something there. Okay, so both Percy and Nico were used to being leaders; back in their high school teams, both had been the leaders. In their last apprenticeships, both had been the only sidekick of the hero they worked with at the time. That had been different, the structure was clear, the hero took the lead, the sidekick followed, but since it was just the two of them, they still had more freedom themselves. While the hero took on the big bad, the sidekick had freedom to decide how to handle the minion(s). This was different, under Theseus was a whole team and he was currently guiding four apprentice sidekicks. Which meant they had to coordinate with others who were of the same 'rank' as them, without a clear leader among the sidekicks.

"Have you considered talking to Theseus about this?" suggested Jason softly. "I mean, you guys aren't the first sidekicks he took on, he must be used to handling head-butting, right?"

Both Nico and Percy stared at each other dumbfounded at that. Neither had considered that option yet. Jason huffed out a laugh and shook his head before getting up. Crisis averted.

"Idiots. And I'm saying that with all the love and affection I have for you two. I'm going to order us something for dinner, okay? You two... talk some more about this. Because when you talk to Theseus, I want you guys to actually be on the same page, yeah?"

Jason laughed as he walked out of the living room, leaving Percy and Nico to it.

Percy actually had a bit of a hero-worship crush on Theseus, if he was being honest. The handsome hero was a bit more than a decade older than Percy, he'd been part of the 'second wave' of heroes, the ones that had followed after the Olympians – Theseus, Herakles, Jason, Atalanta, Odysseus, Achilles, Orpheus. The seven heroes had risen and formed a more or less loose team with each other. Not comparable with the Olympians, but they had made a name for themselves.

And among them, Theseus had always stood out for Percy. The hero controlled water, just like Percy and his parents did, he was handsome, charming, openly bisexual. And yes, that last one, it had been so important to Percy back in the day, awe-inspiring. A few years ago, Theseus had gotten married to his long-time partner Asterion Minos, better known under his hero-pseudonym as the Minotaur. A gay hero wedding, Percy had totally lost his mind over it.

So for Percy to get a chance to work with Theseus? Learn from Theseus? Absolutely amazing.

"Hey there, kiddo. I bring muffins today, do you want one?"

Percy turned toward Asterion. The man's power laid in the physical; he was huge, way bigger than humanly usual, with large horns. He'd doubled down on that with the bull-mask he used in the field, calling himself the Minotaur. Behind the mask was a very handsome man though.

"I'm not a kid. I'm twenty-one," Percy pouted and accepted the muffin. "Thank you."

"Yeah, you're twenty-one. You're practically an infant," Asterion poked Percy's pouting cheek.

"Stop teasing the sidekicks, babe," Theseus stepped into the common room.

The Minos Agency was large, luxurious, high-tech. After all, Asterion Minos and his sister Ariadne Minos came from money. And Theseus? Ariadne's ex-boyfriend and still best friend and now Asterion's husband? He did benefit from that family money. Sure, their dad had had hopes Theseus would end up marrying Ariadne back in the day, but things hadn't worked out. Ariadne was the tech specialist and in charge of communications for the team, making sure nobody got lost and everyone knew where they were headed during missions. She was also happily married to Dionysus now, so Percy guessed that still had worked out nice for the family. No complaints about marrying a former Olympian, right? From what Percy had seen of Dionysus during high school though – the man had been a very unwilling teacher for about a semester – Percy didn't know what Ariadne saw in him.

Theseus kissed Asterion's cheek before turning toward Percy. "You up for a flight-patrol?"

Percy vibrated with excitement as he nodded his confirmation. Because Theseus had a pegasus too – named Pegasus, because Theseus was lame when it came to naming things (not even picking a secret identity for himself, just going by his first name). So Percy, with his pegasus Blackjack, could soar the skies with Theseus, which was just all kinds of awesome. There were just so many things he could learn from Theseus, so many aspects in which he related to Theseus on a personal level – the water powers, the pegasus partner, being an openly queer hero, even down to the brainy bossy best friend (Ariadne reminded Percy so much of Annabeth, it was freaky). This was a dream job.

Nico's work-life-balance had improved so much since his boyfriends gave him a stern talking to last year. It had improved even more after moving in together with Jason and Percy, because the two were good at getting him out of his own head. Even when they infuriated him.

"Hey, big bro. I haven't seen you in months!"

Nico startled and turned to watch Hazel climb off Arion. The speedster horse allowed her to travel quickly and lately, she'd been taking advantage of that. Part of Nico wanted to ask about it, the other part of him thought that she would tell him once she was ready to do so.

"Hazel," Nico blinked a couple of times. "You look great."

Which was true. The past two years had really matured her, not just emotionally. Currently, she had her hair in thick braids, golden jewelry in them, matching the gold dust make-up she wore. A purple loose blouse and black leather pants, very different from her hoodies and t-shirts style as a teen. She was a woman now and she had grown comfortable in that.

"So—o, how is it, how is it, tell me everything? Living with them, working for Theseus?"

Hazel grinned eagerly as she sat down next to Nico on the bench of the garden behind their apartment complex. Kicking her booted feet back and forth, Hazel stared at him intensely.

"It's a lot, honestly," Nico tilted his head back some, looking up into the sky. "It's... tough, at times? I don't know, maybe it's because Theseus has hydrokinetic powers like Percy, but the two of just immediately clicked and I... I've never been that great at making friends quickly. I take time to warm up to. So that's... frustrating, at times. And Percy and I have been butting heads too, which is annoying when you both come home to the same place. Like, it's like we're sitting on each other 24/7 now, after only seeing each other less than once a week, for two years? The change is so big and so sudden that it takes a lot of time to get used to first..."

"I get that, I mean, not entirely. Piper and I didn't do long distance, but still, when we first moved in together..." Hazel huffed and flushed a bit. "I was so annoyed with her all the time! She kept leaving her stuff laying around everywhere, I hated that so much."

"Those things," Nico grunted in agreement. "The little things you don't even really think of ever becoming a problem, until you are faced with them on a daily base and then they do become increasingly more annoying but you gotta learn to somehow... live with them. And it's hard."

"You're going to get used to it," Hazel smiled and patted Nico on the back. "You just gotta give it time and... don't get passive-aggressive about it. Seriously. The month of passive-aggressiveness between Piper and me early into living together? It was not fun. And super childish."

Nico chuckled softly. She really had grown up. Sometimes, it was hard to look at her and not see the chubby-cheeked little girl who had first moved in with Nico's family. Sighing, he leaned against her, tilting his head a little to rest it on her shoulder.

"A lot of different things I have to get used to," whispered Nico softly. "It'll take a bit, because I... am not very good at it. The social stuff. So... yeah." Nico cleared his throat. "What about you?"

"What? Me? I'm perfectly fine," Hazel laughed and shook her head. "Just great."

"Uhu," Nico frowned, but he'd told himself he wouldn't push.

He just hoped she would tell him what was going on at one point. There was something on her mind, definitely. Probably about her path from heron out, right? She'd graduated college too. Percy and Nico had moved on to an apprenticeship, had things mapped out for themselves. Hazel was currently just... traveling a lot. To buy time. Maybe, for now, he could jut distract his sister?

"C'mon, how about a tour of LA?" Nico nudged her and got up.

Author's note: This story is going to be a bit different from Legacy of the Big Three, which is one of the reasons I decided to split. Because LotBT was, as the name suggested, mainly focused on Nico, Jason and Percy. This one, the story of forming a new team of Olympians, is also going to focus on the other future Olympians and their lives more. And that's gonna start next chapter, with Piper, Reyna and Hazel!
