A bit of time has passed since that chaotic day that Ganondorf turned 5. King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule is asleep, sitting on his throne. Ganondorf comes running into the throne room to greet his father, but stops abruptly upon finding him asleep. He grimaces, realizing that he probably should have knocked first.
"Oh, is your father sleeping again?" Impa asks with a laugh.
"It would appear so," Ganondorf says, looking up at his mother thoughtfully.
"Oops... I hope nobody else catches him asleep..." Impa says, putting a hand to her mouth.
A freezing cold breeze enters the room, suddenly, startling both Impa and Ganondorf. Ganondorf then laughs and follows the breeze over to his father. Daphnes still doesn't wake up and lets out a loud snore. Ganondorf looks back at Impa disappointedly as he was unable to catch the wind.
"I suppose we should get him awake..." Impa says, approaching.
"Dad, dad, wake up," Ganondorf prompts.
"He sure is comfy in that throne," Impa says and laughs.
Daphnes begins to awaken.
"Hmmm...?" he mumbles, rubbing his eyes sleepily.
"Hi, dad! You fell asleep!" Ganondorf exclaims.
"Oh, did I...?" Daphnes asks with a silly grin,
"Daphnes, you know you shouldn't sleep in your throne, right? It's not respectful to the past kings," Impa scolds Daphnes.
"But... But... I was tired..." Daphnes whines, pretending like he's about to cry.
"Alright, I was just teasing," Impa says with a wink.
"Dad! You said you would teach me stuff today!" Ganondorf prompts, shaking his dad's arm.
Daphnes stares silently at Ganondorf for a moment. Then the memory of his promise returns to him. He nods slowly and then stretches with a large yawn.
"Alright, my son. I DID promise you that..." Daphnes says, smiling.
"Yay! Hooray! Let's go!" Ganondorf says, throwing his arms excitedly into the air.
"Alright, alright, ummm... I don't even know where to begin, actually," Daphnes says, sweating nervously.
"You can teach me all the greatest things! And I shall become the greatest! Whooo!" Ganondorf exclaims excitedly.
"I love you, Ganondorf," Daphnes says, gently ruffling his son's hair, "And I WILL teach you what I know. Come on, let's start simple..."
"Awww, man!" Ganondorf exclaims.
Daphnes arises from his seat and begins to walk towards the door. Ganondorf runs to catch up and Impa follows behind. The hallway guards watch curiously as Daphnes leads Ganondorf down to the swords-hall. For once, they don't immediately try to grab Impa to throw her back into the dungeon.
"You see this room?" Daphnes asks when they arrive.
Several knights are busy practicing their sword fighting skills in this room. Upon seeing their king, they drop everything and bow. Ganondorf's eyes grow wide in wonder. Daphnes motions for the knights to return to business and they do.
"Can I play with one of those things too?" Ganondorf asks.
"Those are swords. They are used for defense purposes. Without them, our kingdom would be overruled by evil," Daphnes explains.
"Huh... Okay... But can I have one?" Ganondorf asks.
"One day, my son... One day..." Daphnes says, "But first, you'll need to practice!"
"Awesome!" Ganondorf exclaims.
Daphnes plucks a small plastic sword from a shelf and puts it in Ganondorf's hands.
"Your practice sword," Daphnes says.
"But... But... This isn't shiny or pointy? What can I do with this thing?" Ganondorf asks, looking up at his father again.
"Before you can use a real sword, you must practice handling a practice sword. That way, you'll have your swings and techniques down ahead of time," Daphnes explains.
"...Then I guess I'll have to learn quickly so I can get my real sword," Ganondorf decides.
"Right. But don't rush yourself. If you rush, you may not get the full effectiveness of the training you are about to receive," Daphnes states.
"Don't worry so much, Daphnes," Impa says with a smile. "I'm sure with your teaching, he'll do just fine."
"I hope so," Daphnes says.
Training begins as the king of Hyrule also grabs a training weapon for demonstration. First things first, good posture. Although there are many times in battle where you absolutely cannot maintain good posture, it definitely helps with the effectiveness of the blows. As such, King Daphnes demonstrates good posture with the sword, gently pushing his son into position.
"Remember to breathe. Breathing is very important," Daphnes says, catching Ganondorf trying to hold his breath.
"Whoops, hee hee!" Ganondorf says.
"Hold your sword out in front of you like this…" Daphnes directs.
Ganondorf then whacks Daphnes in the knees with his practice sword. Daphnes yelps in surprise. Impa laughs. The knights who are currently training all look over to see what has happened.
"No, my son…" Daphnes says, shaking his head. "We AREN'T chopping people's knees off with our swords…"
"Knees!" Ganondorf says, whacking his dad's knees over and over again. "Knees! Knees! Knees!"
"Ugh… This is not going to be easy…" Daphnes says with a groan.
"Teach me stuff!" Ganondorf demands, stomping his foot.
As Ganondorf goes to whack his dad in the knees again, Daphnes uses his own practice sword to block him. The two plastic blades meet. Ganondorf ends up dropping his blade. With that, he bursts out crying.
"WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN?!" Ganondorf wails. "YOU DROPPED MY SWORD!"
"Oh no… Here, take your sword…" Daphnes says, trying to put the fake sword back into Ganondorf's hands.
"B-but… You're going to smack it away again!" Ganondorf says with a sniffle.
"Your Majesty," one of the knights says, approaching.
"Yes?" Daphnes asks.
"Cute kid," the knight says.
"Thanks…" Daphnes says.
"Hi!" Ganondorf says to the knight.
"You want to train with the big kids, right?" the knight asks.
"NO. YOU MAY NOT GIVE HIM A REAL SWORD! HE'S FIVE!" Daphnes yells.
"Alright, fine," the knight says with a shrug.
"I want a real sword! I want!" Ganondorf whines.
"Eventually!" Daphnes says. "But if you never learn to use the fake sword, how will you know how to use a real sword?"
"I really want to use a real sword," Ganondorf says, pouting.
"Just give him a chance, Your Majesty. I was five when I got my first sword," the knight says.
"Really?!" Ganondorf asks.
"The difference is that this is my son," Daphnes argues. "If I lose him, I lose everything."
"What if we get a fairy in here. Just in case?" the knight suggests.
"Fine. You win," Daphnes grumbles.
Very reluctantly, Daphnes puts the plastic swords away. The knight runs and fetches a fairy in a bottle. Promptly, he returns and places the fairy within reach. Ganondorf watches eagerly as a real sword is pulled from the shelf.
"Good luck little buddy," the knight says, raising his sword.
"Three…two…one…GO!" Impa calls out.
Ganondorf doesn't know what he's doing. The knight swings and strikes his sword against the child's sword. Ganondorf loses his sword and begins crying again. Daphnes face-palms.
"Go get your sword," the knight prompts. "Look, when your opponent clashes with you, you're going to have to hold your ground."
Ganondorf grabs his sword again. Unfortunately for everyone, he tries to pick up the blade. Immediately, he begins screeching loudly. The knight grabs the bottle and uses the fairy on Ganondorf.
"That hurt…" Ganondorf says, sniffling.
"So. Do you want your father's sword instead? It won't hurt you," the knight says.
"I… I guess so…" Ganondorf says.
Daphnes smiles thoughtfully. The plastic swords are brought back out again. This time, Ganondorf listens to his instructions. The knight returns to sparring with his real partner.
"Swing and clash," Daphnes directs, his sword in position.
"Okay…" Ganondorf says.
Ganondorf and Daphnes strike each other's swords. This continues for a few minutes. Ganondorf then gets bored and strikes Daphnes' knees again. Apparently, he has learned nothing.
"Ow ow ow!" Daphnes wails.
"I win!" Ganondorf exclaims.
"Child, you can't just bash people's knees in…" Impa says. "…but I suppose if you were under attack with no way out, that would do just fine."
"I did good," Ganondorf says.
"Hah hah, well… If you don't want to actually learn things, I guess I can't force you to," Daphnes says.
"What?! But I do wanna learn!" Ganondorf says.
"Then stop hitting me in the knees," Daphnes says.
"Hmmm…ahhh…no," Ganondorf says.
"Then no lear-AH!" Daphnes wails as Ganondorf smacks him in the knees again.
Eventually, Ganondorf calms down. A few training exercises later and he's exhausted. Daphnes sighs in relief as Impa walks away, carrying the sleepy child. Being a father AND a king is hard work.
