Seraphine and Cassandra knew each other for a while now. They knew each other as trainees. Sera has met Colin and Cas has met Sera's father. There were days where they were attached by the hip, their shoulders bumping against each other constantly with no comment. When they weren't, the other would be like a faint fog on their mind and clouding their thoughts until they reunite.
Questions lingered these recent days. When did they start doing these things? When did hanging out with them start becoming so natural, so freeing?
How did the other see them? How did she see her, the blonde thought to herself as the world settled finally.
Seraphine couldn't help but wonder. She wondered when she started to feel hot whenever Cas started getting too close, too friendly. She wondered why she started to think like this.
Especially when it was just the two of them, right now, in a hidden barrack of the Postknight headquarters. Both of them were beaten from a particularly rough delivery quest. Even for their skill, the amount of enemies were relentless. The two of them came out scathed and bruised, though the adrenaline pumping in their ears prevented them from feeling any pain.
There is laughter that hangs in the air, leaving tired puffs from their lips. It feels as though there is thunder in their chests as sweat falls from their brow. Despite the danger, despite the injuries, Seraphine had never felt safer than being around Cassandra.
"What a quest!" The brunette exclaims in parted huffs. "Those sabrequeens are vicious!"
"You're telling me!" Sera laughs. "I forgot that we're in Aldor by how much I was sweating!" She shoulders off her uniform coat and folds it lazily next to her. "Relentless creatures."
"Good thing we are even more relentless!" Cassandra jests. "It'll give us something to fight back against!"
Seraphine rolls her eyes playfully at Cassandra before sitting down beside her friend and placing an arm over Cass. She leans slightly against the taller girl who reciprocates, pulling her closer into a side hug. It's comfortable. It's familiar, it's warm, it's wonderful.
Cassandra's hair tickles her neck, and she closes her eyes, relishing in its softness. "Are you cold?" The brunette asks suddenly after a few minutes of silence.
She doesn't respond. She can't find it in her to pull away, not when Cassandra is so close. Her warmth seems to seep deep into Seraphine's bones and she wants nothing more than to let it stay there. If only it could.
They don't have to do anything else to make Seraphine more content in the world except-
"Cassie, what are we?" she asks in a low mutter. It was quiet enough for only one person to hear. For only the person that matters to Seraphine. "I…"
"What are we?" Cassandra repeats, a laugh haunting the notion. "That sounds like something one person can't decide on their own, you know?" Her eyes avert Seraphine's gaze, as if panicking. "What do you think?"
The other cadet huffs. "You just said it's not a one person job. You can't just ask me." You tell me first, Sera thinks, please. She doesn't know if her heart can take no as an answer.
"I guess we are at a standstill then." Cassandra says, pouting jokingly.
"I guess…" It was better than a rejection, maybe, prolonging the answer that Sera needed to hear one day. Just let it go, Seraphina tells herself, let it go. "Sorry that I asked." She moved away from Cass, away from the warmth. She knew if she got attached even more than she had…
"H-hey, wait a minute Sera! Sorry! I'm never really good with serious stuff."
"Then what are we, Cass?"
Seraphine didn't mean to let that slip out. She winced the moment she heard herself. It was a lot harsher than she meant. Maybe the exhaustion from the patrol was finally getting to her. Maybe it was how much she was fed up with this confusing tango they have been doing for months. She doesn't usually overstep like this. It was hard to look at her friend right now. She wanted something more than friends.
She loves Cass more than she can bear.
"Oh, Sera… I could never not tell you, can I?" A gentle gloved hand held Seraphine's cheek. It only took that one moment for Sera to realize that she had been clenching her jaw, biting her cheek, from saying anything else that might ruin their friendship. "I've never wanted anything else but to see you look me in the eyes."
Sera looks up. Her heart practically melts at the sight. The way Cass blushes when their eyes meet is contagious.
"There you are." Cass says oh so fondly. There is a ghost of chuckle that hangs on the end of her words. Her blush grows as Cass averts her eyes but never moves her head. "Despite how common and clumsy I am, I get to be around someone as wonderful as you. It feels as though I am a terrible person."
"Why is that?"
"Because I… because I am asking you for something selfish, utterly-"
"-Horrendous?" Sera chips in.
"Yes," Cass confirms, voice pushing through her throat in waves. She giggles under her breath. "You're the only one would use that word." Her hand is trembling ever so slightly in Sera's. "I can't…"
"Well," Sera moves her hand over Cass', tracing her fingertips over the other's knuckles. "I think quite the opposite."
Her eyes light up, there is a flash of hope. "What do you mean?"
"I think… you are quite amazing, Cass." And Seraphine moves in.
She would say she was the first one to make a move but Cass acted just as fast. They met in the middle under the hush silence of the world at that moment. No witnesses, no enemies, just them and a taste of something wonderful. They were tired enough, nervous enough, to be brave.
As they part, Cass can't help but laugh. "Do the positives somehow make a negative, Sera? If you think I am wonderful but I think I am horrible, does it somehow negate how I feel?" The blonde girl can't help but let out a chuckle of her own.
"Well, I have been feeling horrid myself, Cass. I guess my thoughts were that perhaps that we were both terrible."
"Something terrible, huh?"
"No, dummy, something wonderful." And Sera moves in to proves her point. Cass follows her lead, a smile gracing each of their features. The thumping of their chests had calmed and they fell into the comfort of a crisp spring morning after a storm.
Colin yawned as he finished up the last of the delivery reports for today. Stretching himself long, he could hear the lower parts of his back pop satisfyingly. He's definitely been in his office too long, he thought to himself as he saw the sun gone from his little window. Perhaps a quick late night snack was in order-
There is a loud set of footsteps approaching his room. At first, he thought perhaps it was Solomon but the red haired boy wasn't usually up this late. The steps got louder and he was starting to get concerned. A peek into the hall wouldn't hurt anyone.
"Just who could it be at this hour-" Colin soon found his answer as his fragile door was swung open, almost hitting him in the face. An unholy yelp jumped out of his chest involuntarily despite his cool dodge. It was his sister, panting heavily with a manic expression. Her face was flushed and had a scary grin that looked as though it was stuck that way.
"COLIN. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE-" She shouted excited. It would have become a screech if Colin hadn't instinctively slapped his hand over her mouth.
"Do you know what time it is?? Come inside, you don't want to bother the other knights Cass." He scolds. She nods and tries to reply but ends up slobbering over Colin's hand. "UGH, sis!" Colin whips his hand away and whips it away on his tunic.
Cassandra sticks her tongue out. "Shouldn't have covered my mouth then." She dashes inside and plops down on a couch. "Now listen to what happened!"
The evening gets longer as Colin sits back into his old office chair, belly still hungry. He's happy, however, since he doesn't have to hear Cassie and Sera speak in hush whispers about each other to him in close quarters anymore.
...Well. Maybe he still will but for now the two girls finally confessed to each other.
