A:N.. This story is part of a bigger picture that I started over nine years ago of stand alone episodes that eventually all connect into one big continuos saga. I have created my own version of Starfleet and the Federation to reflect the circumstances in the Delta Quadrant.

The Characters from I:D:A: are all a figment of my imagination. I wanted to stay away from the real episodes of Voyager but without leaving the awesome characters behind, instead giving them new adversaries and to build up a strong long term interaction with another group and organisation smiler to their own.

Glossary this will probably get bigger as the stories progress i am a big fan of the techie side of Star Trek and also try to invent my own devices.

The Away Mission

The trial was not going well, and it did not help that Alyx would not speak in her defence, in fact since the massacre she had not spoken at all. No one had heard her side of the story.

Ivana and Kathryn walked out of the courtroom which was rapidly emptying for a recess.

The first part of the trial concentrated on the events of the bloodbath with evidence from the surviving victims and Cobalt cadre.

It was a full blown court martial as the killing of I.D.A personnel was considered a serious offence punishable by disconnection from the fleet.

Two senior officers from each division represented the four bodies of the I.D.A cadet structure, Cobalt, Sepia, Cyan and Cadmium.

Ivana contacted Trahn via her N.O.A.D comm link, she was not really expecting good news, but seeing how the trial was going and the evidence piling up against her cadet, she was prepared to clutch at straws.

He informed her of the deterioration in Alyx's health, her life force was ebbing away with each passing hour and at this rate he did not think the trial mattered or its outcome as Alyx would not be alive to hear the verdict.

They had hoped that keeping her informed of the proceedings would prompt some reaction from her to fight back and defend herself.

Ivana still could not get to grips with how the situation had got so out of hand and deteriorated so quickly. She felt impotent at being unable to prevent this meltdown in Alyx. By the time she and Trahn realized what was happening Alyx was in a coma, her vital organs shutting down.

It was now a critical battle between a broken soul fighting to die and the life support systems fighting to keep her alive.

It all happened so fast after her return to base from the away mission that was supposed to be a routine village inspection for her Cobalt cadre cadets, to inoculate the villagers against the Erogen flu which was doing the rounds, thanks to the frequently changing frontlines.

There were no battling factions known to be in the area so only a small group of cadets were dispatched, five in all, as the villagers only numbered eighty six in total. it would not take them long to administer the vaccinations.

The cadets were shuttled into the area, loaded with supplies of food and medicine to deal with any other medical issues the villagers might have.

Kathryn had asked to go along to see how I.D.A functioned and compare similarities with the Federation.

The landing sight had already been cleared of bush and vegetation on previous occasions as this was not the first visit for this group of cadets. The villagers had refused to leave the battle zone, even though they were sandwiched between two opposing factions, they felt it was not their war so they continued with their lives as normal.

Kathryn and the crew picked up their backpacks and piled the surplus equipment and food supplies on to the hover board for transportation to the village. Spirits were high, the cadets jovial, it was autumn, the heat bearable with a light breeze blowing over them. They enjoyed the freedom away missions like this gave them, to get away from the stuffy confines of the base camp, they were in no rush to get back, there was even talk of going for a cooling swim in the river once their job had been completed.

It all seemed eerily quiet and ominous, disconcertingly so as they neared the village, no sound of birds chirping, no dogs barking nor piggies grunting, more noticeably missing though, was the absence of laughter which usually came from the village children playing on the platz. Only the silent rush of wind rustling the leaves of the surrounding vegetation and trees could be heard.

The Cobalt cadre were no longer chatting, but listening with a grim sense of foreboding and concern written on their faces. In unison they stopped, unshouldered their weapons, checked their equipment and spread out in line of sight of each other. T'Brin ordered Kathryn to stay low with the hover transport.

A shot rang out followed by the anguished cry of a small child shrieking for her mother. The cadets moved silently with deliberation and determination to achieve surprise and ascertain who or what was the cause of the distress.
