Hey everyone, happy Sunday!
Thank you so much for reading and reviewing the last chapter, here's a little update to see what Adam did.
Also I wanted to give a little shout out to IG account Burzek Dream for helping me find a clip of the show I needed to for this chapter and also to Sarra for helping and supporting!
Happy reading!
Xoxo,
Nina
That was the exact moment that Adam made the worst decision he could ever make.
It wasn't him. He wasn't thinking. It was his body doing all the talking and he just couldn't control it.
"Aahh." He sighed in pleasure, giving Tori a sense of pride, until the last word was pronounced.
"Kim."
"What?"
She immediately stopped what she was doing and looked at him as if she was about to kill him, and Adam, realizing what he had just done, just managed to shut his eyes and wish the Earth would swallow him. This wasn't at all how he wanted things to go down.
"What did you just say?"
"I'm sorry."
"So this is what this is really all about? It has nothing to do with us wanting different things. It has to do with you wanting a different girl."
She got off him and stepped away. "Kim? Who the fuck is Kim?"
Adam was silent, but Victoria was quick to fill the blanks. "She's that cop I met at Molly's isn't she?" He didn't have to say anything because the look on his face confirmed it. "What's going on between you and her?"
"Nothing. Nothing is going on between us."
Technically he wasn't lying. There was nothing really going on, but that didn't mean that he wanted things to stay like that.
"Don't fucking lie to me, Adam." She started to pace back and forth in his living room, putting every piece together. "Everything makes sense now. This is why you have been acting so strange. Have you been cheating on me this whole time?"
"Tori." He stood up and tried to hold her by the arms in an attempt to calm her down. "It's not like that."
"I don't wanna hear it, right now. I think you're right. I think I deserve a night out and have some fun. And just so you know, I'm not planning on holding myself back. I'm going to hook up with whoever I want tonight because we're definitely on a break."
She stormed out of his place leaving Adam behind in a state of massive confusion. A part of him was relieved he was able to share his thoughts about their relationship with her, but another part of him wasn't happy about how it had happened. Calling her Kim was a very low blow and he knew that. He never meant to hurt her like that.
Even if he wasn't in love with her, he did care for her. After all, she was the one he had decided to try to have an actual relationship with and he knew she didn't deserve to be treated like that. He felt bad for not telling her all the truth, but he also wanted to protect Kim. Telling Victoria about the events of the night was only going to infuriate her even more and it wasn't going to help anyone's case, on the contrary, she was going to get mad at Kim and the brunette hadn't done anything wrong. The whole responsibility was on Adam and he was more than willing to take it.
On the other hand, that last thing she said about being on a break was still hanging in his head. Had she really understood that for him they were over? Or was he going to have to have a clear conversation with her, open up and be truly honest?
This had been just another example of how lack of communication can fuck things up big time and in a second.
The next day had arrived faster than expected.
She was well aware that time hadn't sped up, and that this perception had more to do with the thrill that she was experiencing and the fact that she hadn't stopped even for a second since she set foot in her temporary accommodation.
Kim took a shower, put on her underwear and an oversized t-shirt and attempted to rest, which she obviously couldn't accomplish, but this time it was different. This time she was having trouble sleeping because her kiss with Adam kept replaying in her mind, making her blush and feel butterflies in her stomach every single time.
She didn't even try to erase the smile on her face because today it was like a permanent stamp, and to be honest she missed feeling this. She felt hopeful and excited and in love in a way she never thought she would feel again.
Being the responsible detective that she was, she took advantage of her insomnia to write the report about the operation and share it with Voight and Lindsay, as well as having all the pictures, possible evidence and facts ready to share in the morning with the whole team, until sleep finally won and she went to bed.
It was the buzzing of her phone that woke her up, making her almost jump out of her bed. She looked at the screen and picked up right away.
"Hello." Her voice was hoarse and full of sleep, which made Erin laugh on the other side of the line.
"Hello, there. Good morning. Did I wake you?"
"Yeah."
"My bad. How are you?"
"It's fine. I had to wake up eventually. I'm good. How are you? How's everything over there? Do you miss me?" Kim joked.
"Everything's good. And yeah, I do miss you. This place is a mess without your extraordinary organizing skills. Remind me never to get a job without you."
"I will write it down on a post it and stick it on your computer." They both laughed.
"Please do. Listen, I read your report."
"What do you think?"
"Well, I'm impressed by how far you got the first time. It's outstanding work, really."
"Thank you very much. I would love to take all the credit for it, but Adam basically did all the talking. He's so good undercover."
"He is. I always thought that was one of his biggest strengths. He has a way around people and it's like everyone loves him. I don't know what it is about him." Erin said that last part on purpose, trying to see the current state of her friend's feelings for Ruzek.
"Well, he's approachable, funny, and makes you feel safe at some point. I guess that's why he always gets people talking or witnesses to flip in the interrogation room."
Her voice softened as she described him. The deep respect and admiration for Adam was one of the things that she had always loved about them when they were a couple, especially because it was mutual, and hearing her friend talk like that painted a smile on Lindsay's face.
"How about you? Did he get you to flip yet?"
"Um…"
"What are you hiding from me, Burgess?"
"Ok, so. I might have some tea to spill."
"Do it now."
"I guess I'm a homewrecker once again."
"What? How? When? Where?" Erin asked everything at once, acting desperate and making Kim chuckle.
"We kissed last night. Like, a lot."
"Oh dear Lord! And?"
"And it was amazing. I swear Erin, I haven't felt this good in so long and I don't regret doing it and he told me that he didn't regret it either, but at the same time I feel bad about his girlfriend and"
"Stop right there." Lindsay cut her off fast. "I love that you can empathize with her and I understand you feeling bad, and I know we shouldn't do that to other women, but and this is a big but, taking care of this girl is not your responsibility is actually his. Your responsibility is looking out for you."
"I know, but still."
"You have such an amazing heart, Kimmie but this time I'm going to tell you the same thing Platt did back in the day.
"Have fun while you can."
They both said at the same time and laughed. They would quote Platt often when they got together and this was one of the phrases that came up many times.
"So, what are you going to do? Did he say something?"
"Well, we didn't speak about anything. I think the only thing that have established is that we have missed each other and that the attraction still exists."
"Obviously yes Kim, but you do know you need to talk about your feelings, right?"
"We mentioned feelings, but it was vague."
"Kim."
"I know, I know." She sighed. "Just let me enjoy the moment Erin." Kim said, pretending she was crying to make her laugh.
"Fine, enjoy the moment." Erin rolled her eyes. "So, tell me, was it like you remembered?"
"No. It was better."
"Please expand."
"It was familiar but exciting and new at the same time. I don't know, but it was really good."
"Aww! I'm so happy you guys did something."
"Except talking about our feelings, you mean?" Kim teased.
"Yeah, exactly."
They talked for a few more minutes, talking about life and sharing some details about the next step of their operation. Erin promised to contact Voight as soon as possible so all of them could think of the best way to
get Saldivar to give them what they needed to bring Jones down.
Due to the conversation with her friend and her current state of bliss, Kim lost track of time and practically had to run to the district to get there on time.
She was surprised to find Kevin and Jay standing by the door of the 21st.
"Morning, guys! What are you doing out here?" She greeted cheerfully, before hugging each one of them.
"We were off to get something to eat. Want something?" Kevin asked.
"Nah, I'm good."
"You sure? We have quite an extensive list of requests." Jay added.
"I am. Thank you boys."
"You're welcome Burge."
"What is she doing here?" Jay inquired softly as he looked ahead, making Kim and Kevin do the same thing to find a blonde who was walking full force towards them.
"I don't know dude, but she doesn't look normal." Atwater responded, matching Jay's tone.
"Does she ever?" Halstead shot back under his breath.
"Hey Tori, here to see Ruz?" Kevin tried to be friendly but she ignored his question, so he tried again. "Have you met Kim already?" He said, placing a hand over her friend's shoulder.
"Yeah, we met at Molly's a couple of nights ago." The brunette answered politely, while they were all trying to figure out the look on Victoria's face.
"Do you want me to tell Adam you're here?" Kev intervened one more time.
"No. I'm not here to see him, I'm here to see Kim actually." She looked at the brunette in defiance.
"Um, sure. How can I help"
Kim couldn't even finish her sentence, instead she felt heat and a tingling sensation on her left cheek caused by Victoria's palm against it. The slap was so intense and it took Kim so off guard, it even turned the brunette's face to the side.
"Stay away from my boyfriend, you slut!"
Jay and Kevin were shocked. They never thought Tori would be able to do or say anything like that. Even if they didn't really like her, she never came across as a rude girl. But this was completely unacceptable behavior.
Halsted was quick to stand between the two women when he saw that Tori was about to get at Burgess again.
"That's enough, Victoria." Jay's voice was firm and Atwater went to grab her by the arm and take her away.
"Don't touch me Kevin or I'm going to scream." The blonde shot back.
"I don't think you understand Tori. You are making a scene and after what you have just done you could be arrested. So I suggest you take a walk and cool off.
"You should be telling her that." Victoria had completely lost it, so Atwater had no other choice than to walk away with her before things got any worse.
Halstead watched them go and then turned to find a completely pale Kim. "Are you ok?"
"No."
Her feelings were impossible to describe. It was a mix of nervousness, anger and a massive state of shock sprinkled on top of it all.
"What happened?"
"Nothing. I don't know. Ugh." She sighed and shook her head, looking extremely mad and frustrated. "I need to talk to Ruzek."
She walked into the district leaving Halstead standing there and not even greeting a soul as she went upstairs.
"Ruzek, a word."
Were the only words that came out her mouth as she stepped into the bullpen, not even stopping to leave her things by her desk, she just went straight to the staff room.
Adam nodded at her request and started to look around the room, to see if anyone could give him any sort of answer as to why Kim was acting like that. At the lack of answers he just stood up and followed her, hoping whatever it was it wasn't that bad.
When he went into the room and found her back facing him, he just knew some sort of bomb was going to blow right in front of his face. He took a deep breath and closed the door behind him.
"Hey." His voice was soft and full of fear. She turned to look at him and didn't know how to start. She felt guilty as hell, but she also felt like she didn't deserve that, and a part of her blamed Adam for not taking care of her like she hoped he would.
If everything that happened before wasn't enough to let him know that something was very wrong, the look on her face did. But apart from her eyes, the furious red on her face really called his attention.
"Are you alright? What happened to your cheek?"
"Listen, I don't know what the fuck you have going on with your girlfriend and to be honest, right now I don't give a shit either. But you tell her to calm down, because if she ever pulls off a little act like this again, I swear I will forget that you are in a relationship with her and I will have her ass in cuffs."
"What are you talking about?"
Kim ignored his question and just went on with the ranting. "She's lucky Jay and Kev were there, because I swear I don't know how I would have reacted. I get it, I messed up last night and I own it, I do fully. But I don't think I need to be disrespected like that in my workplace."
"Victoria did that?" He asked, pointing at her face.
"I don't deserve to be treated like that by her or you or anyone else." Her angry words and ranting were quickly invaded by the tears pooling in her eyes and Adam couldn't stop himself from walking to her and wrapping her in his arms. At first she tried to push him away, but after some minutes she gave in to his embrace.
"Kim, I'm so sorry. I'm going to talk to her."
"Do whatever you want, Adam. But it's clear that we can't go on with this."
He was about to say something, but she broke loose from his hold and left the room.
