Chapter fifteen:
Near pulls away from Mello's neck only a little so his mouth is still hovering right there. "Finish him." He orders to BB in a calm tone not even looking up to look at where Roger and BB are.
"As you wish." BB lunges for Rogers throat while the other tries to shove him back. He hisses as Roger tries to push the parts inside of BB further inside of him to help him try to push him off of him.
"I won't let you win this time you blood sucking parasites!" Roger shouts and uses his feet to slam them into BB's stomach managing to get him off enough to roll away from the other. He charges at Near only to be tackled down to the ground by BB. He spins around stabbing a spare arrow into BB's chest causing the vampire to rear back with a cry of pain.
BB falls back landing on his butt starting to feel dizzy from the stab.
Roger charges for Near grabbing a small dagger from its hiding place in his sock. He raises it at the vampire prince with a cry of rage. "This ends now! You will die here and the vampire race will perish after your death!"
Near only slightly turns to Roger not even dignifying him with a full turn in his direction. He is still calm as if already knowing that the old man won't get him. He moves a hand to signal to A to not stop Roger when the other is about to move to do so.
Roger feels his anger increase even more at this. He starts to swing the dagger down towards Near only to gasp as he is suddenly tackled to the side. He finds sharp teeth dig into his throat and the back of his neck from the side. He hits the ground hard knocking the breath from his body as he does so.
Matt in wolf form slams his paws on either side of Roger who is laying on his side on the ground. He kind of has to use Rogers body to support himself though he keeps his grip on the others neck tight. He snarls with narrowed eyes starting right into Rogers wide eyes that look at him.
Roger tries to weakly struggle though with his breath being stolen away from the teeth puncturing his throat he isn't going to last long. His life fades from his eyes as he dies there in Matt's jaws.
Matt waits a few moments after Roger's life slips away before he takes his teeth out of the hunters neck. He raises his head, still using Rogers body for support, with blood on his teeth to look to Near, A and Mello. His eyes dart to BB who tries to remove the weapons that were struck into him.
BB does look kind of weak, at least weaker than usual.
A looks really worried for his mate.
Near turns to look fully to Mello and he takes the blonde from A's hold. "Go ahead." He encourages so A rushes to BB's side where he puts his arms around the other to support him. He watches Mello and helps to keep him from possibly hurting himself when his body thrashes a little. "It is alright Mello. You've got this." He knows that it is just because of Mello's body changing that is causing pain throughout the blonde's body. So he just needs wait for it to finish changing and for the pain to pass.
Mello's mouth opens in a silent scream showing his fangs growing and sharpening to be true vampire fangs.
Near does wish that it didn't have to come to this though Roger had left him with no choice. He truly doesn't want Mello to die from Roger's stupid decision. He stays there with Mello as the others breathing is hard from all the pain.
It takes just a little longer to complete.
Mello's thrashing slows to a stop and his hard breathing calms down. He looks more peaceful now. After a brief pause his closed eyes scrunch up then open a little slowly. His eyes now having a red glow to him that will settle once Near shows him how so Mello can have his blue eyes back. His eyes flicker to look to the prince who smiles a little at him.
"Welcome back Mello." Near greets letting Mello go as the other shifts to sit up. "I am sorry but the only way to save you was to turn you into one of us. I refused to let you die here." He explains and Mello looks to his hands in surprise. "I will help you adjust to being no longer human." He turns to glance to A who is helping to support BB and a glance to Matt who is looking back at him still in wolf form. "For now let us head to medical center. I will take care of Roger's body."
"Who will run the orphanage if not Roger?" Mello's eyes flicker to look to Near who turns to meet his eyes.
"Don't worry about that. I have faith in how that will be figured out." Near promises to Mello. "I will also send a request in to cover up us leaving the orphanage. They do not need to know the truth. And I know that L will understand if I tell him the right words."
At this Mello nods his head.
A picks BB up after giving a look from Near telling him to run on ahead. He hurries off to get BB to where they can get medical help.
Near moves to where the drug evidence is and he destroys it before tossing it into a dumpster. He grabs a shard of glass then as Matt gets off of Roger he slashes Rogers neck to hide the bite marks. "Let us go." He tells them after tossing the glass against a wall shattering it then kicking it into a storm drain grate.
Near and Mello help Matt up to be held by Near then dash off together with Mello stumbling a little not being used to running so fast, though at least doing better than Near had thought he would for his first time.
They arrive with three nurses rushing over to them.
"Where did you go!? You're not healed!" A nurse helps to take Matt as the other two check on all of them.
"My pack needed me." Matt tells the nurses and they blink in understanding since they know that nonhuman instincts can be strong and different than human ones.
Two nurses take Matt to get him back to his bed so he can rest.
One nurse turns to Near. "A is asking for you." She informs Near who nods then follows her with Mello following after the prince.
They arrive to a room where Near enters.
A is sitting on the bed next to BB and he turns as Near enters.
Near notices the somber look and he moves closer to A.
BB slightly turns his head to Near.
"The doctors aren't sure if he will make it." A reports lowering his head sadly.
"I'll be fine!" BB tries to affirm with his voice sounding very strained.
Near places a hand on BB's uninjured shoulder. He offers a smile to the other. He can tell what will happen here. "It will be alright." He promises to BB. "I am appreciative of all you have done. You were a wonderful guard. I thank you for your service."
BB smiles a little this.
A sobs with tears coming to his eyes. He leans closer gently taking the oxygen mask off of BB's face. He places his lips over the others own with the two closing their eyes when this happens. He shares a loving no tongue kiss with BB until the other's spirit is released from his body. He pulls away opening his eyes halfway to stare at BB's face while tears stream from his own eyes. "Your highness." He speaks with a broken hearted tone. "If it is alright with you I would like to train our replacement then join my mate in death."
Near stares at A with a calm yet sympathetic look. "If that is what you want. Then you may." He agrees causing Mello to turn to him in surprise. He turns to the blonde meeting his eyes. "Nonhuman mates are more powerfully connected than human relationships. When one loses their mate that they do indeed love then a part of them is taken. There will forever be a hollow spot where their mate was when they were alive. Unlike humans that void will never be filled again. It is a great pain to lose a loved mate. Most nonhumans will follow their mates into death rather than live with the pain of not being with them."
Mello thinks that it is sad that things are this way, though he supposes he can now understand A's want for death after hearing that be explained by Near. He nods softly then turns as A approaches him.
"How would you like to be my replacement?" A offers and Mello's eyes widen.
"Me? But I am a new vampire!"
"That doesn't mean that you can't be a good guard for Near." A points out to which Mello blinks then he nods with a determined look.
"Alright. I will do it." Mello agrees to this and A nods softly not even able to offer a smile. He can see the pain of losing BB in the other's eyes and it makes him flinch as he has never seen such hurt in a humans face. He can see that indeed the pain of losing a mate is indeed harder on nonhumans than it is on humans. He doesn't think any human has ever had that much pain from losing a loved one. He wonders how strong A is to stay alive to be able to train him despite the pain.
"Thank you Mello." Near mentions causing Mello to turn to him. He offers him a smile which the blonde does return.
"It'll be my honor to protect you." Mello bows to Near respectfully despite just bending at his waist with one hand across his stomach.
Near places a hand on Mello's head gently. "You will be a great protector." He confirms to the blonde.
… A year later….
A passed away a month ago with Near taking the responsibility of stabbing A's heart to allow him to join his mate in death. He even got a grave next to BB's in a graveyard for those not human just outside of town.
Mello is now trained up to guard Near, his training was pushed pretty hard so it wouldn't take forever.
L understood when Near sent him a message that they would be leaving the orphanage believing that they needed to head on their own path in life. He wished them farewell and requested that they stay safe out there, also assuring them that if they need anything to just contact him with them always being welcomed back to the orphanage.
Roger's murder case has gone cold with not enough evidence to convict anyone of the murder. His replacement is Watari's only other close friend who is running the orphanage quite well, doing it how he thinks Roger would have wanted.
Near blinks his eyes open as he awakens from his slumber. He can feel Matt hugging him from behind with the other's wolf tail, Matt ended up letting his ears and tail show during the night, lightly laying over his waist. He smiles softly to himself and allows himself to lay there for a bit longer.
Besides they are safe in the very secluded, surrounded by many trees, countryside two story house that has become their new home.
Mello is probably up already though he isn't bothering the unusual mates.
Near couldn't be happier with how things have turned out. He shifts his hips feeling Matt's cum inside him slightly leak out since Matt's knot had deflated during the night. He actually likes the feeling of the knot inside him more than he had thought he would. He turns his head slightly to nuzzle Matt as best as he can. He gets a happy rumble from the wolf in return.
Everything is going to be great indeed.
