When Xander came too he was in a high tech version of Janet's infirmary. Cordy lay on a bed nearby and Dr. Weir on the bed on the other side of her. He didn't see Major Sheppard or the scientist who's name he'd forgotten to ask about. A man approached the bed he was laying on.
"Hello, my name is Janus, I've healed your companions, they'll awaken soon. You healed on your own and remarkably fast. Our scan show you have proteins in your system that we've never seen before."
"Yes, the result of an experiment when I was a teenager. Where are the rest of our companions?"
"I'm afraid they were beyond our healing abilities and have died. The ship you arrived in. I designed it, but haven't built it. At least not yet."
Xander felt his stomach sink, he had a feeling he knew what Janus was about to tell him.
"According to the data from the ship, you've traveled back approximately 10,000 years."
'Yep, I knew I wasn't going to like his answer.' Xander thought, sourly. 'And Cordy really isn't going to like it.'
"Then you're the Alterrans, the people we call the Ancients. We're part of an expedition from Earth. Terra, as you called it. We came looking for the legendary Atlantis. Stories about it have been passed down for centuries. We found an outpost on our southern most continent and the Stargate address. We were hoping to meet actual Ancients, but not this way."
"No, I imagine not. Your companions will be waking soon. As soon as you are able, I will take you all to meet the High Council. What are your names?"
"I'm Captain Alexander Harris. Captain is my rank. I'm a linguist and a soldier. This is my wife, Cordelia Chase, she's a lawyer. And the other woman is Dr. Elizabeth Weir, she's the leader of our expedition. Doctor is her title, it refers to the amount of education she's had. The highest amount."
"Thank you for explaining that to me. I will make sure the council members know."
Both Cordelia and Dr. Weir were stirring and Xander got down from the bed and walked over to the one Cordelia was on. When they were both awake he explained the situation. He was right, Cordy wasn't happy.
"What do you mean 10,000 years in the past?! We can get back, right?! We had better be able to get back! I know you said this might be one way, but this is way more! There better be a way to fix this Xander Harris!"
"Janus is going to take us to see their High Council. Hopefully, they'll know how to get us back. Also, Major Sheppard and the scientist who was with us didn't make it."
"Oh. Crap."
"Yeah, pretty much sums it up."
Unfortunately, the Council was not receptive to helping them get back.
"Causality is not be treated so lightly." The head of the Council, Moros said.
"Causality both will and will not be affected." Xander told him. "A new timeline formed the moment we appeared here. The original is continuing on. Every choice creates new pathways. This is just one more."
"He is correct." Janus said. "We could still get them back to their time. The temporal wave hasn't caught up to it. But the longer we wait, the less of a chance we have to get them back to their own time."
"I have already ordered the time travel device destroyed. It is too late." Moros answered.
"You've trapped us here?!" Cordelia exclaimed. "Without even giving us a chance?"
"I believe it is for the best. You will adapt, I'm sure." He was completely unaffected by her anger. "We will find ways for you to be productive. I understand you are a soldier." He addressed Xander.
"Yes, my rank is Captain. I have served for five years and seen combat."
"We are at war. A race known as the Wraith. The war has lasted for nearly a century. Soldiers are needed."
"You want him to help you fight your war?!" Cordelia was incredulous.
"It is how he may serve."
"I'm also a linguist and have helped negotiate a number of treaties, Dr. Weir has as well."
"Yes. We could help with negotiations if you wish." Dr. Weir told the Council.
"We may take you up on that. We're short on negotiators. Our last attempt did not go well, I'm afraid." Another of the Council members, a woman, told them. "Another attempt may be worth while."
"In the meantime, we have arranged quarters for you. I understand, you two are married?" Another council member asked.
"Yes, for four years." Xander answered.
"We will have someone show you to your quarters. Later, we will meet and discuss how best you can serve." Moros said, clearly dismissing them, much to Cordelia's ire.
"About the only good thing about this, is these quarters." She told Xander when they were in their new rooms. "This is amazing."
"It is, isn't. And to see the technology in action. If we do figure out how to get back, we'll have so much to teach the others."
"Xander, I don't like the idea of you fighting in their war."
"I don't like it either, Cordy. That's why I offered the negotiation route. Maybe that will be more effective. But until we know the issues involved in this war of theirs, I can't say for sure. Dr. Weir has negotiated these kinds of treaties before. I don't negotiate. I translate so others can negotiate. And the treaties involve exchanges of goods. Dr. Weir would be doing the actual negotiating, I'd just be helping."
"I wonder what the issues are? A war that lasts that long usually involves stuff like religious beliefs, at least in Earth."
"I know. But as far as I know, the Ancients weren't really that religious. They preferred philosophy and meditating."
"Boring."
