"Will the defendant please rise?"
Oliver stood with the semblance of calm, buttoning his jacket to hide his restless hands. He was already sure of the outcome, and he knew it wasn't going to be in his favor. He glanced at Jean and then focused his attention on the clerk. "In the matter of the 'People v. Oliver Queen,' on all 26 counts of the indictment, we find the defendant guilty."
Oliver sighed. He knew there was no way Diaz was going to let him walk out free. Before setting this in motion, he would have made sure to leave no stone unturned.
McGarvey nodded as well, like someone who had expected someone to do a job and it had been done. "Members of the jury, the court thanks you for your service," he said. "You're dismissed."
Oliver turned to exchange a desperate glance with Felicity and William before he was taken away. "It's going to be okay," he told them, unsure if he believed it himself.
The guards moved towards him, but before they could do anything, the room melted away around them. They looked around and saw they were now in some sort of theater. A man appeared in the middle of the room. The crowd of people fell deadly silent as the man looked up to reveal John Constantine. "John?" Oliver asked in amazement, not worried about keeping his secret any longer. "What are you doing? Where did you bring us?"
"Your team called me and said it was time for me to pay you back for saving my life," John answered. "So here I am."
"As I remember," Oliver said, taking a step forward (to the amazement of the room full of spectators) and wrapping John in a bear hug which he gladly returned, "I'm the one who owes you at the moment."
"Well, let's see," John mused, giving Oliver a thinly-veiled wink. "There was the booby trap around the Orb of Horus on Lian Yu. I did get a scraped elbow when you tackled me, by the way, but it's better than a spear through the head, so we'll give it to you anyway. And then you let me go at great risk to yourself from Baron Reiter. So that's 2-0 you. Then you called me to come help you get Sara Lance's soul back to her body. 2-1, still you. Thus, I still owe you one."
"Look," Oliver said, clapping John's shoulder, "I appreciate it, really, I do, but I can't just waltz out of here. You think I couldn't have escaped ten times over if I wanted to? I won't make my family and friends fugitives to save my own skin."
The crowd was silent, listening to the conversation with rapt attention. They figured out that Oliver Queen and John Constantine had met on the island, and after Oliver's confession that he had not been completely up front with them about his time away, they were very interested about anything they could glean about it.
John nodded. "Then I have another idea," he said, and turned to the crowd. "Hello everyone," he said. "My name is John Constantine. I won't explain to you who I am, because quite frankly, you wouldn't be able to understand. Oliver here doesn't even understand fully, and he's seen me in action. However, what you do need to know is that I'm not what I seem. I am a very powerful person, and it's not because I'm a meta-human, or well-trained in a skill, or anything like that."
"Well, you are pretty well-trained in magic, and you did manage to transport us all to wherever this is," Oliver put in, to the crowd's confusion.
"Okay, fine," John winked at him again. "Listen though, guys. I met Oliver Queen on Lian Yu over eight years ago now. And he doesn't have powers, but within half an hour of our meeting I owed him my life twice over. Now some of that is just because that's the way things work in places like that. Everything moves at an insane pace and if you don't move with it, you die. But most of it is because he's just that good, and he's that willing to do whatever it takes to save as many lives as possible.
"But there're some other things you need to know about Oliver Queen. He has connections. Crazy, insane connections. I don't know how many of you have heard of A.R.G.U.S., they tend to keep a low profile, but Oliver knows the director personally, and she owes him her life as well. In fact, Mr. Diggle, over there, she's his wife and the mother of their son. Oliver was Dig's best man at their wedding, and is their son's godfather.
"Oliver also has unique connections to powerful organizations in Hong Kong and Russia. And, if that wasn't enough, have you ever heard of Central City's hero, the Flash? Well, Oliver trained the Flash. They're very good friends, and have worked together on multiple occasions."
"Um, John…" Oliver started, but John waved him off.
"Because yes, I'm sorry, Oliver, but the cat's out of the bag," he continued. "Oliver Queen is, in fact, the Green Arrow. But before you move to verdict and sentencing, there's a lot you need to know about that sentence. A lot of misunderstandings about Oliver, in both of his personas, that no one has ever figured out or understood. Oliver could have cleared up so many things, but he didn't, for his family's sake. I think it's time that his family and friends helped him out for a change. So, I called some people."
He grinned. "You guys out there?" he called out louder.
Suddenly, the Flash zipped into the room. "Hey, Ollie," he said, nodding to Oliver.
"Ba…Flash, what are you doing here?" Oliver stammered.
"Yeah, thanks for not outing my identity, too," Flash said teasingly. "Last thing we need is two heroes more worried about their families and whether they're gonna be killed or arrested than about global crises. But, we all already talked it over, and we've decided that if one of us is outed, all of us should be."
"Wait, all of us?" Oliver asked quickly. "Who else is here? How many came?"
Flash shrugged. "All of us," he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "You're our leader, Ollie. And as Mick loves to say, when you're part of a crew…"
Oliver nodded in understanding and thanks. "All of you can come on in now," Flash called out.
Suddenly, the room was overrun with superheroes. They paraded in a line and all came to greet Oliver. The judge had had enough. "What is going on?!" he shouted.
Slowly, things quieted down, and everyone looked at him. "Now, this is highly irregular," he began, "but since this is such a highly irregular case, I'm going to allow it. All right, heroes. Do what you came here to do, and we'll let the jury decide whether or not to believe what you say."
After smirking to himself at the judge's audacity to believe he had any control over the situation whatsoever, Flash nodded at the judge and then at Constantine, who backed off. "Thank you, your honor," he said. "First thing's first."
He took off his mask. "My name is Barry Allen," he said to the world. "I'm a CSI in the Central City Police Department. I've been the Flash for four years. I've known Oliver for five. Outside of my own team, Oliver was the first person I told about my powers. He trained me, taught me about the hero gig. I wouldn't be the man I am today without him. I owe him my life ten times over."
"I owe you mine more than that," Oliver said, shaking his head. "Even before your powers, you still saved my life multiple times."
"Well, who's counting?" Barry joked with a grin. "I talked with your team, Oliver, and I was unable to convince them not to unmask themselves here and now, too, although I managed to convince my team and the Legends to stand down."
Diggle, Felicity, Dinah, Rene, and Curtis stand up. "My name is John Diggle, I'm former military, and by night I go by the name Spartan," Diggle introduced himself.
"My name is Felicity Smoak, I'm a computer genius and Oliver's wife, and by night I go by the name Overwatch," Felicity said.
"My name is Dinah Drake, I'm a Police Captain, and by night Oliver and Quentin Lance were gracious enough to allow me to take on Laurel Lance's legacy and call myself the Black Canary," Dinah stated.
"My name is Rene Ramirez, I'm former navy, and by night I go by the name Wild Dog, which is a terrible name that I still blame Curtis and Felicity for insisting I use," he said, giving Felicity and Curtis a small smile.
"My name is Curtis Holt, I'm a former employee of Felicity's, and by night I go by the name Mr. Terrific," Curtis finished.
Thea and Roy rushed in. "Don't forget about us," Thea panted. "Hi Ollie."
They turned to face the room. "My name is Thea Queen," she started.
"And my name is Roy Harper," Roy continued.
"And we're retired now, but we used to be part of Oliver's team," Thea stated. "I would go by Speedy."
"And I would go by Arsenal," Roy finished.
The judge shifted. "So far, all I'm seeing is more people to arrest," he said. "Is there a point to all these theatrics?"
"Yes, your honor," John put in. "You see, I enlisted Barry and Sara's help in obtaining something which I hope will finally allow the world to understand Oliver Queen."
Oliver looked up, realizing for the first time what was probably going on. "No," he said.
"Oliver, it's the only way," John said.
"You didn't," Oliver said, his voice getting louder and scarier.
"Oliver," Barry started, but Oliver interrupted him.
"Barry, you better than anyone ought to understand why you should not have done that," Oliver growled.
"No, Oliver," Sara said. "You've done so much for all of us. It's our turn to do something for you. And I know you're like the worst in the multiverse at accepting help, but Oliver, this one time, please, let somebody help you."
Oliver stared at her for a long moment. "It's happening whether I like it or not, isn't it," he finally said.
"Yep," John put in cheerfully. "Sorry, mate, but as skilled as you are, you wouldn't last ten seconds against all of us combined."
"Ten seconds?" Oliver teased with a hint of a smile returning to his face, "I'm honored that you have such a high opinion of my skills, but I think I wouldn't last one second, or have you forgotten that time stands still for Barry?"
Barry chuckled. "What, are you finally admitting that I beat you in that refrigerator warehouse?"
"I told you," Oliver returned, "there were no witnesses. It doesn't count. And remember, I still shot you."
"Oh, trust me, I'll never forget you shooting me in the back," Barry fake-growled.
"It did the job," Oliver returned. "You learned to case environments, didn't you?"
"Oh, yeah," Barry teased. "In fact, I learned it so well I caught myself reciting your little speech about taking the time to know your environment to Jessie when I was training her."
"Well there you go, you see?" Oliver laughed. "Training the next generation of superheroes."
As Oliver and Barry bantered back and forth, the crowd watched in astonishment. They had never seen their former mayor look so relaxed, so comfortable in his own skin. He obviously knew these people very well, trusted them completely. They didn't know that the Green Arrow and the Flash were so close.
"Ahem," the judge finally cleared his throat, and the attention turned back to him. "Where is this evidence that you've supposedly collected?" he asked.
"Ah," John said. "Thank you, mate. Now, as I was saying, both Barry and Sara can time travel. I won't go into how, but they can do it. So, I had them both go back and time and record every second of Oliver's life, from a few days before the Queen's Gambit set sail to the present. Then I had their collective team of hopeless nerds put it all together, and I was told it's apparently in the form of a TV show. I want all of you to watch it, and then decide for yourself what kind of man Oliver Queen is."
The courtroom was silent for a moment. "A TV show?" the judge finally repeated.
"Don't ask me," John said. "Between Team Flash, Team Arrow, and Team Legends, we practically have our own army of nerds, and the rest of us puny humans usually understand about half of what they say."
"True," Oliver put in, with a glance at Felicity.
"Hey!" she exclaimed, everyone's attention turning toward her. "As I recall, the nerd army has saved all of your behinds countless times."
"Yes, you have," Oliver said calmly.
"So, what do you say, mate?" John asked the judge.
"Well, it's highly irregular," he said, "but this entire case is highly irregular, and if this truly is a TV show of Mr. Queen's life, then I think to continue with this trial without watching it would be a breach of Mr. Queen's right to a fair trial. Besides, if Mr. Queen doesn't think he can get out of here, I don't suppose the rest of us have any chance."
"Yes!" John exclaimed. "All right. Now, the nerd army says they've arranged everything chronologically. They also have taken the five years Oliver was missing and put them into the episodes as flashbacks. So each episode has two stories; one that happened while he was gone and one that happened after he was back. Both will be chronological, so you'll see what happened during his first year on Lian Yu at the same time you see what happened during his first year back, and then his second year in both places, etc. You will also be seeing snippets out of the lives of all the heroes in this room. Is everyone ready?"
Oliver took a deep breath and nodded. The crowd and the heroes settled into the theater seats. John plugged in a USB stick, and a black screen appeared. As soon as everyone was settled, the screen came to life.
