Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I am here today to grieve with you the passing of DrunkJester, who was the original author of this fic. The poor man passed away when I was in the middle of telling him how lord Ainz is justice and weakness is a sin, he died way too early... Nah, just kidding, he's alright. He's just been busy with classes, etc... I have been the co-author from the start and have just taken the mantle. He'll still be with me behind the scenes but from now on, this'll be my fic. I hope with my entire heart that I do not disappoint any of you, anyhow, I hope you enjoy.
"Ankoro Mocchi Mochi, Takemikazuchi, Ulbert…" The melancholic salesman whispered the names of his comrades under his breath, "I… I had a feeling that you guys wouldn't come…" He said to himself. Momonga -the Guildmaster of the infamous guild Ainz Ooal Gown- looked to the top left of his screen, where a timer was counting down to zero.
The make-believe Heteromorph sighed as he saw the numbers go down, "After all these years… tsk, how pathetic," Momonga closed his fist and slammed it against the Throne of Kings, one of the guild's 11 World Class Items. The last remaining member of Ainz Ooal Gown raised one of his hands up to his head and held it like a mother cradling her newborn.
"All of the memories we made, did they mean nothing to you!" He screamed at the silent throne room before him, "Why did you have to leave me!" He bellowed whilst shedding a sea of tears behind his visor, "Heh, I guess that this was just a game to you guys after all… "
Momonga turned his head to face one of the NPCs his friend Tabula created, "How selfish of me… I am not the only one you left behind," Momonga caressed the face of Albedo, whose beauty bore no limits, "I am sorry, I should've tried harder… If I had… Maybe they would be here with us, lamenting the end of this grand era…"
"If only I wasn't forced out… I would spend the rest of my life caring for you, the children of my comrades," He said whilst eyeing the other creations of his friends. Yuri Alpha, Lupusregina Beta, Narberal Gamma, Shizu Delta, Solution Epsilon, Sebas Tian… They all stared at him with blank stares, no emotion… No joy, no sorrow, no hopes, no dreams…
Momonga looked to the roof of the throne room, where an otherworldly crystal hung. its obsidian hue reflected all of the light in the grand hall, yet it also bore an unrivaled amount of darkness, "Was I not enough for you guys? Well… In the end, it doesn't even matter."
Momonga clutched the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown after looking at the countdown one last time and closing his eyes… 3… 2… 1… 0…
"I'll miss this… I really will."
…
"Huh… What is going on?" Momonga opened his eyes, and to his surprise was met with an unrivaled amount of sunlight.
The skeletal Overlord looked down, no longer feeling the frigid floor of his apartment, which was unusual. There was no sense of touch in games such as Yggdrasil, perhaps this was a new update? 'Did those shitty devs decide to postpone the server shutdown?' Momonga asked himself.
The stunned player was brought out of his thoughts when he heard some sort of nearby floundering, "He- Hel- Gaghh," a little human screamed.
Momonga looked to his left and saw a rather small person drowning merely a dozen feet away from him, "Is that a new NPC? Wait, is that a fairy? No, it's too big… Perhaps it's some sort of subspecies, but how come I've never seen it before…Is it new?" The not-so-tiny fairy began to disappear below the water while Momonga was asking himself these questions.
"I should probably save her… I wonder what kind of dialogue options she has!" He said to himself as he activated the perfect spell for the situation, [Fly]. It took less than a second for the Overlord to reach the oversized fairy. Momonga crouched down and wrapped his skeletal hand around her ankle before placing her in his arms.
"Are you ok?" He asked the coughing girl.
The little being seized to squirm before a searing pain began to course throughout her leg, "Ahhhh! Let me go!" She screamed before falling back into the water.
Momonga cocked his head in confusion before finally realizing what he had done. He deactivated [Negative Touch] and reached out to the girl once again, "Forgive me, I didn't mean to hurt you," Momonga repeated the same actions he made a moment ago and grabbed hold of the small girl. To prevent her from falling into the waters once more, the Overlord teleported both himself and the young girl onto dry land.
The white-haired girl grasped at his robe in an attempt to stay away from the surprisingly shallow water -which she didn't realize was now some distance away, "Paimon feels better now," she said as she opened her eyes. Momonga then witnessed the child's pupils dilate in horror.
"Monster!" She screamed.
Momonga let the girl go, as he didn't expect such a reaction. To his surprise, the fairy didn't crash onto the ground like he had expected, no, instead, she began to float.
He then proceeded to spend the next few minutes swatting at the girl, as she threw punch after punch in his direction. She had managed to get a few hits in, impacting her tiny fist against his skull, but his [High Tier Physical Immunity III] negated any and all damage dealt by her. After this meager attempt of attacking, the girl fell to the ground in exhaustion.
Momonga watched as she slowly floated down, it reminded him of a leaf swaying in the wind -not that he's ever seen one in person.
'How odd… I don't remember NPCs being so… realistic,' Several things didn't sit right with Momonga. For one, the girl's mouth opened and closed when she talked, something that NPCs and players alike weren't capable of in Yggdrasil, and although her punches didn't hurt, he was still able to feel them.
After diving into an ocean of thought, Momonga finally came to a somewhat reasonable conclusion: "I am no longer in Yggdrasil -or at least not in the Yggdrasil I know," But some things still didn't make sense to the Overlord, how was he able to move if he was a skeleton? Shouldn't his bones fall to the ground without any muscles to uphold them?
"Well… I know I can't go out like this," Momonga was able to cast [Fly] without problem, but something inside him changed after he realized his new circumstances. It took more time for him to open his inventory, but after a minute or so, he managed to open the rift in space. The undead Overlord extended his hand forward, letting it sink into the purple abyss before pulling out a mask that he oh so heavily disliked; The Mask of Envy.
The now skeletal monster closed his robe, hiding away any and all calcium-rich bones. Although his clothes bore no buttons, they seemed to have undulated as if connected with glue. The blue frames of the mask should've given his vision a color-filled hue, but Momonga could see everything around him clearly, perhaps it had something to do with his [Night Vision]?
Having finally completed his makeover, the ruler of death turned to the resting fairy beside him, 'Maybe I can use her to some degree… If she holds even a bit of information then she's more useful to me alive than dead. Huh, interesting… Anyways… I can't just leave her alone. Ah! I know just the summon!'
"[Summon Shadow Monster: Shadow Demon]!" Ainz thrust his hand forward with majestic grace.
A dark abyss opened up a couple of feet in front of the Overlord. With eager eyes, Momonga watched as two 2 dimensional arms exited the alluring hole in reality. Those two arms quickly became a humanoid figure only a head shorter than the Overlord. The summoned monster took one glance at its summoner before bowing low enough to nearly touch the floor with its head.
Momonga turned around before addressing his servant, "Hide in this one's shadow. Alert me if anyone comes near. You are allowed to fight if someone attacks her. If they are above level 50, notify me. I'll be back in a bit."
The Shadow Demon behind him nodded in understanding before sliding into the fairy's shadow.
Satisfied, Momonga teleported to a bench that he had spotted before saving the small girl. The skeleton sat down and began to ponder, 'Sigh… Thank god I can summon my monsters, now… I should probably test out some other spells. Okay, let's begin!'
Momonga stood up with never before seen vigor, "Now, I should see if I can return to Nazarick… If I'm in one of the nine worlds I might be able to teleport there… I just hope nothing goes wrong."
"[Gate]!" He chanted. To his surprise, an oval-shaped portal appeared before him. He stared at the magenta-colored rift before taking a step forward.
Momonga was about to pass through the portal when a myriad of raven-colored cubes appeared within the rift. They began to expand until they surrounded the entirety of the portal. The gate was swallowed within seconds and all that remained were hundreds -if not thousands of those black cubes. It then took nearly a minute until they dissipated into nothingness.
Momonga stepped back, preparing nearly a dozen spells, 'What the fuck was that?! An anti-teleportation measure perhaps? But I set my destination to the tomb, I should be allowed access, I have the ring after all!' Momonga thought whilst looking down at the Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown, 'Did someone use [Depiction of Nature and Society]? Again, impossible. [Depiction of Nature and Society] is in the treasury,' The Overlord's mind went into override, there were too many questions and nigh zero answers.
'Arghh! Why can't everything just fall into place like a neat little puzzle!? If only Punitto was here…' Momonga shook his head, 'What would he do… Hmmm, I should probably secure my position, as I am in an unknown location. Creating a bunch of summons wouldn't be a bad idea…'
Coming to an agreement with himself, Momonga decided to boost his defenses with the addition of a couple of allies, "[Create Two High Tier Undead: Eyeball Corpse]! [Create Four Middle Tier Undead: Death Knight]!"
A large puddle of black sludge appeared beside the summoner's feet. It then proceeded to diverge into 6 separate, smaller puddles. Similarly to the Shadow Demon, large figures began to crawl out of the unsettling goo. The whole process was rather quick and it took less than 5 seconds for 6 abominations to kneel before Momonga -well… At least 4 of them did, the other two merely lowered their gaze, as they had nobody to show their respect with.
"Death Knights, hide amongst the nearby shrubbery. I want each of you to go in a cardinal direction, you decide who goes where, but don't go further than that hill," Momonga commanded whilst pointing at one of the nearby landmarks.
The 4 abominations nodded before getting to work.
"Now, I want you two to survey the surroundings," He said to the two Eyeball corpses in front of him, "if you spot any living beings nearby notify me of their location. If you get seen, report it to me. If you get attacked, retaliate, but if the enemy proves too overwhelming retreat."
The two eyeballs moved their bodies both up and down, gesturing their understanding.
"Now… Back to experimenting, ah right, I should see if close-quarters teleportation still works…" The Overlord then proceeded to spend the next couple of hours experimenting with spells, skills, summons, and items.
…
"And done," Momonga said to himself as he crashed into the ground, leaving a surprisingly large crater in his wake, "So [Perfect Warrior] cancels out [Fly]... Interesting, though it does make sense as it restricts my casting abilities… No fall damage though, how intriguing," Momonga dusted himself off before taking a seat below a rotting willow tree…
