Prologue:

A zombie apocalypse happens dramatically in films and novels. In February CDC advised people to stay inside. In the media there were reports of the dead and odd behavior; everything was confusing. Unessential businesses, airlines and borders temporarily closed. Megan personally recorded Mrs. Maples, a little old lady who lives next door covered in blood lingering around in the backyard. Eventually people like Miss Maple's got out. When the population dwindled drastically overnight, looting and rioting ensued.

A paper airplane breezed past Daniel's head, a relentlessly bullied student. In an instant she wrote the class clown's parents a disciplinary email. Every day she reevaluates her decision to pursue a career in education. The English teacher Mrs. Finn stepped out for an impromptu meeting and Megan; the teacher's assistant was awarded the responsibility of raining in homeroom. Suddenly Mrs. Finn banged on the door leaving a smear of blood on that sliver of glass in the middle. Megan waved off a student attempting to let Mrs. Finn in and the room went eerily silent. Those funny videos of people attacking each other played in the background on smartphones.

"Miss M! Miss M!" Daniel called Megan; from the other side of the door. "Members of another group are outside, they call themselves 'The Unit'. The children are locked down, all guards posted like we practiced." The Unit was perched on tree stumps just outside of the wall. Over the years The Scholars cut down the schools surrounding greenwood. With binoculars she could make out three men. "Let's show our visitors some Pinewood HS hospitality." Daniel, who had accompanied her on the rooftop, scurried away.

The Unit was led through the gate by armed guards. Two guards opened the double school doors and she walked out in a dramatic fashion. "Welcome to Pinewood High School, home of the Blackbear! We're The Scholars." She motioned for them to follow her inside. First stop on the tour is the living quarters, strategically showing off their numbers. Every bed for an able body. The classrooms used to teach survival skills, basic reading and math. A glimpse into the gym practically made for combat training and back to the gate. "And that's Pinewood High School, everyone here learns something. Today you all learned we're smart! Look I don't know what the future has in store for Pinewood but I intend on PHS to stay standing for years to come." Daniel appeared with a crate full of Strawberries. "Our crops were extremely generous. Safe travels." She walked away just as Voight opened his mouth. Their relationship with other communities was written in blood 'dead'.
