A day full of kids. That was something that really got to Spencer Reid, and that was saying something.
It was Halloween and he was sitting at home on the couch reading a book, but somehow he couldn't really manage to focus on it. His thoughts were still on their last case. He thought about the woman who had really believed that her dead husband's ashes would heal her daughter.
This woman was seriously mentally ill, that was certain. And yet, the devotion to her daughter was genuine. Even without her mental disorder, she would have done anything for her.
It was strange. Reid himself had no children, but even he knew if he did, he would give anything for them. So would this woman. So would any sane parent.
And Henry, too, had made him wonder today. Spencer was amazed that he, of all people, was his favorite profiler. And it made him immensely proud at the same time.
He never thought he would be a role model for anyone. And Spencer had to admit to himself that it made his heart beat faster. Because Henry was very important to him, he loved him, just as he loved JJ and everyone else on the team. More and more the question germinated in him, what it was like to be a father himself. To have children of his own in the house. To play with them, to laugh with them, to raise them and also to argue with them. After all, he was already thirty and slowly it was time to start a family himself, just like everyone else at his age. They had a family. And what did he have?
Suddenly his cell phone vibrated. A bit startled and jolted out of his thoughts, he glanced at it and read the message he had just received.
"Hey Pretty Boy, be with you in ten minutes" - Oh yes, that's what he had. A loving boyfriend who brought him the stars from the sky, as they used to say. And Spencer was sure, if that were possible, nothing could stop Morgan from actually doing it. He had often told the younger man that he would do anything for him, that he loved him and that he was more important to him than anything else in the world.
And yet no one knew about their relationship until now. Not even the team, which was like a family to them. But somehow it had never really worked out that way. Something had always come up. Besides, they weren't sure yet what would happen once their relationship became public. After all, they worked together and the rules of the FBI were clear. Relationships between colleagues were not welcomed. But the BAU was a special team and none of them could be replaced so easily. But Spencer was sure, sooner or later they would figure it out.
Still brooding, Reid set aside his cell phone. He knew he didn't need to answer Morgan, let alone give him his consent. Morgan would do what he wanted anyway, as usual.
For the next ten minutes Spencer hung on to his thoughts and very slowly he realized something. Something very important. Something he needed to discuss with Morgan. If he could find the courage to do it.
When the front door was unlocked, Derek entered the apartment. He long had his own key to Reid's apartment, and Reid had his own key to Derek's apartment. After all, they had been a couple for three years. They often slept together, because especially when there were very difficult cases, they knew that they always had a place with the other. Even unasked, they had agreed that the door was always open for the other.
"Hey baby" Derek had gotten rid of his jacket and hung it up in the hallway, then joined Reid on the sofa. He placed a gentle kiss on his hair.
"Hey," was all Spencer replied, snuggling up to Morgan and closing his eyes briefly to savor the moment. Because far too rarely did they get to sit down in peace and just do nothing at all. The job never really allowed that.
"How was it with Rossi?", Reid inquired and looked up into Derek's face. He was running his fingers through his friend's hair and looked at him as well.
"Quite funny. We went to a bar, had a few drinks. And man, we really stood out, all undressed up like that" Morgan laughed that deep and dark laugh that made his chest vibrate pleasantly, Spencer found.
"Glad you had fun," Spencer replied, resting his head back on the older man's shoulder. A comfortable silence spread. They were getting to the point where Derek lapsed into a doze until Spencer spoke up again. It was now or never.
"I've been thinking," he said, waiting for the words to reach Morgan.
"'Thinking'? About what?" he heard the rough and slightly sleepy voice of his friend. He opened his eyes and looked at Spencer, waiting.
"About our future. How it's supposed to go from here."-"Why? It's all right, isn't it?" Now Morgan did straighten up, slightly concerned. And Reid, perforce, did likewise. He brushed back his hair and tried to look Derek in the eye again. But somehow it wasn't so easy anymore. Nervously he kneaded his fingers and looked down. Everywhere but at Derek. And for him, the younger man's posture was anything but reassuring. He was clearly afraid. Only of what? Of his reaction? Would he be in for some bad news now? He hoped not.
"It-I think so. I mean, yeah. It's fine, but- today made me realize some things," Reid also starts to speak nervously. And the uneasy feeling in Derek's stomach only widened. Suddenly he also felt something like fear. What if Spencer was no longer happy with their relationship? After all, they had been together for three years. What if he had lost his feelings for Derek? What if he no longer saw a future in their relationship? - That and much worse thoughts buzzed through Derek's head as he waited for his boyfriend to continue speaking.
"I-I'm thirty years old. According to statistics, I am just the right age for- for starting a family. Derek, I want a family" Finally, Reid dared to look at Derek again. And from one moment to the next, all the tension fell from him. At last, it was said. Finally, Derek knew what he was thinking. But for Derek, things looked a little different. Derek's muscles only tensed more as he pondered the exact meaning of those words. A family of their own? Wasn't that what they were already? They and the team? Wasn't that enough? Derek didn't know what to say to that. They had never talked about this topic before - Why not, actually?
"When I saw Henry today, coming in the office dressed as me- I was just so proud. Derek, I want this too. And you can't tell me you don't want a family too. A little family of your own, a home of your own. Derek, please tell me you want that too" Pleadingly he looked at the older man who just stared stubbornly at his hands. Of course he wished for a family, with children and everything. Only they just couldn't have that. How was that supposed to work out?
"Yes, I do wish for a family. But-" Morgan stopped and looked to the side. What was the best way to make him understand now that that wasn't possible? After all, they were both FBI agents, men, and full-time professionals. There was no way they could handle raising a child.
"But it can't," Spencer completed his boyfriend's sentence. He felt the tears burning in his eyes and tried to push them back.
"I can't give you what you want. And that's unfair. I wish I could. Believe me, there's nothing I want more than children. Children with you! But just because that's not possible, doesn't mean we can't have a family" Now a tear had escaped the younger man after all and fell straight onto his leg and seeped into the fabric of his pants.
"You realize what the consequences are, right? You know that we'll have to tell everyone that we're in a relationship. Because if we adopt a child, it won't go unnoticed. And we don't know what will happen if our relationship becomes known. And how did you imagine parenting? If we are away all the time, how could the child grow up properly? Besides, we're men, it's not going to be easy, anywhere" Somehow Morgan tried to make his point without sounding like he was trying to dissuade Spencer from that thought. Only he felt that the younger man, despite having such a high IQ, didn't realize what it meant to raise children.
"But JJ can do it, too, and look what Henry turned out to be! He's a happy kid. And that homosexual parents are still frowned upon in society is only half true. Meanwhile, society has become much more open," Reid argued and had stood up. He couldn't manage to sit still any longer, because now the real discussion was starting. Would they or wouldn't they? That was now the big question. And if not, would Spencer be able to bear it? He didn't know, but he would find out.
"But for Henry, there's still Will. But if one of us has to leave for a case, so will the other. Forget? We work on the same team! Spencer, you're making this all way too easy!" - "Derek, please" The older man, who had also stood up in the meantime and joined Spencer, had fallen silent in an instant. Nervously, he had been pacing around the room. Derek looked at Spencer, who still had tears in his eyes and that pleading look on it.
"Please just say you want a family too. Please just say we want the same thing" Reid had never sounded so desperate to Morgen's ears. Immediately, he had rushed to his side and hugged him. He squeezed him tightly, planted a kiss on his forehead, and hoped Spencer would calm down. He couldn't bear to see the younger man so sad.
"I love you Spenc. More than anything. And I want children. Always have wanted some and I know I only want them with you" They held each other close, they both knew this would be a big step and while for Morgan that meant facing many consequences and repercussions, Reid didn't even remotely think about it. For him, it was clear that this was what he wanted and nothing was going to change that, no matter what.
"Then let's do it. I mean, we love each other and we can do it, I know we can" - "Where's your rational thinking when you need it. Don't you have any statistics for how kids grow up with same-sex and full-time working parents?" - "When it comes to you, there's nothing rational about me at all" Spencer buried his head back into Derek's shoulder and allowed his back to be gently stroked.
"Tell me how you envisioned this. Are you just going to adopt a child and then let everything else come to you? All of this isn't as easy as you think it is. I grew up with two younger sisters. Our mother was a single parent and I had to help take care of my siblings a lot. That's hard work."
"I know it's not going to be that easy. But if we both stick together, we can do it. I believe in us. And maybe it would be better if one of us would sit out for a while then, after all a salary is enough too and I've saved up a lot in the last few years" Derek could see exactly how big the desire was in Spencer to start a family, to have children with him, even if it wouldn't be their biological ones. After all, he had just suggested putting the job on hold for that. And maybe he should get carried away with that. Maybe it would do them good to have little innocent children with them, even something outside the office. Something that didn't constantly remind them of the horrors that lurked out there in the world. Because as much as they loved each other and liked to be alone, they couldn't really get away from work. Precisely because they worked in a team. They experienced the same things day in and day out, the same cruel things that haunt their thoughts all the way home. And a family would be the chance to finally have a life again. A real and happy life outside of work. An ideal world, even if only for a few hours.
"I guess we'll take our chances," Morgan said, still holding Spencer in his arms and stroking him gently. Now slightly surprised after all, the younger man raised his head and looked at his boyfriend.
"That would be very nice," was all Spencer could say. Just at that moment, such a great wave of happiness and joy flowed through him that there was just no more coming over his lips.
"I know Pretty Boy. And I really hope for your sake that you won't regret this decision, because I'm only doing this for you" With these words he kissed Spencer on the lips and they enjoyed this moment. This so small moment that meant so much. The beginning of a new chapter in their lives. A chapter as a real family.
"I love you" Spencer said, giving Morgan that one smile that made him instantly soften.
"I love you too" They kissed again, this time more intimately. Which was interrupted by a light laugh from Morgan.
"Man I can't wait to see Garcia's face now" Now Spencer had to laugh too, as he could only imagine Penelope crying out in joy, trapping them in a neck breaking hug. And the rest of the team would make a pretty silly face, too.
"Just too bad the whole 'making a baby' part is off" Lasciviously Morgan grinned at the younger man and immediately he knew what was meant. And he had to admit to himself, now that the subject was settled and they had decided on it, he was in a real celebratory mood.
"Hmm. That doesn't mean we can't still do it" Spencer's voice was almost a whisper and he was about to kiss Derek. But before he knew it, Morgan had also grabbed him and lifted him up. A small scream escaped the younger man and he automatically wrapped his legs around Derek's waist.
Laughing, Derek carried his little genius into the bedroom, where he carefully placed him on the bed and slowly began to undress him.
And even though they hadn't discussed the details yet, they knew they would. They would soon be a family. They would never be able to marry because same-sex marriage was still illegal in Virginia, but they would make it work. - If it was even possible to adopt a child.
But they would work all that out. They knew now that they wanted the same thing and that was the most important thing.
Now the family planning could begin!
