Chapter 42: Complications

The Warworld

Blue Jay's POV

I carefully followed Nightwing as the two of us travelled through Doctor Fate's portal to arrive at the Warworld, demanding to know what happened to our team.

Our Team was sent by me and Nightwing to assault the Warworld; the giant satellite that Mongul controls.

His threats to Earth were considered an act of war which result in the Justice League, the Team and even the world's military forces in responding to this.

However, the next thing we knew our contacts with them were lost.

Me and Dick have tried contacting Robin, Bat Girl, Superboy and the others, but got no respond from neither of them.

But the only person out of the Team that could give us clues on what occurred was Blue Beetle.

"All right, what happened?"Nightwing demanded."What happened to the rest of our Team?"

"They couldn't have vanished into thin air."I retorted with a hint of anger."So, you better have a good explanation."

"It's all my fault."Blue Beetle declared sadly.

"That assessment is inaccurate."Green Beetle commented.

"Just tell them what you told us."Captain Atom insisted.

Nightwing and I both looked at Blue Beetle, ready to hear what he had to say.

"We'd won."Blue Beetle admitted."We were all here in this bay, and Wondergirl had Mongul hogtied. Then suddenly a boomtube opened up right beneath our feet. I flew up and out. It was instinct, you know. But before I could do anything else, the boomtube closed, and the others were gone."

I took my my mini gadget laptop to look for information within the Warworld, only to find that had been residual traces of boom tube activity within the big satellite.

"Definitely reading traces of boomtube activity."I complemented.

"We think Mongul may have opened the boomtube as a mean of escape, gaining the Team as captives in the bargain."Captain Atom declared."The Team and worse."

"Impulse had the crystal key."Blue Beetle said.

"So the priority is making sure no one uses it to reactivate the Warworld."Captain Atom complemented."Captain Marvel and Rocket are already guarding the key chamber. And the Justice League will continue guarding it in shifts until the key is found and the threat is ended."

"It's all my fault."Blue Beetle repeated.

"Stop. You didn't do anything wrong."Nightwing assured and placed his hand on Blue Beetle's shoulder."We'll figure this out."

"For now...I will ensure he gets home safely."Green Beetle admitted.

"No, I want to stay!"Blue Beetle protested."I want to help!"

"You will help."I assured."But right now, you need rest. You've been through a lot."

Doctor Fate opened a portal for both Beetles to step through it.

Blue Beetle then stopped to look at me and Nightwing.

"I'm sorry."Blue Beetle apologised.

"No."Nightwing replied sternly."Whoever did this, they'll be sorry."

Then Green Beetle and Blue Beetle stepped through the portal before it closed.

Panic began to grow inside me at the thought of the possible things that were happening to Robin and the rest of the Team.

Were they suffering?

Getting beaten up?

They could be held captive in an isolated place and getting tortured like it happened to-

No.

I can't think like that.

They're fine.

Our friends are probably held as hostages somewhere and need to be rescued.

I promised Bruce and Selina that I would protect Tim as Dick would.

We've lost some friends in the past and I'm not going to let it happen again.

A while after, me and Nightwing decided to investigate the Warworld for clues.

The two of us noticed the gouges on the floor left by what appeared to be Blue Beetle's stapler.

We then see that the controls for the airlock were destroyed.

"Airlock's damaged."Nightwing commented.

Nightwing and I walked up to the damaged airlock, only to see a birdarang embedded near the airlock.

It was Robin's birdarang.

"Robin's birdarang."I murmured.

I carefully detached the birdarang from the broken airlock to show it to my boyfriend.

Nightwing scanned it and we then see nanites belonging to the Scarab on the surface.

"Birdarang must have scratched Blue's armour."Nightwing commented.

"That's strange."I responded, raising an eyebrow."How could Robin use one of his birdarang must to scrape Blue Beetle's armour?"

"Perhaps Robin was aiming it at Mongul and he missed."Nightwing suggested.

"Even though we were the ones that taught him how to throw a birdarang without missing its target?"I questioned.

A smirk appeared on Nightwing's face.

"If I recall that was also the day when you made those caramel truffles for us to try and they ended up getting stuck in our teeth for the whole day."Nightwing informed smugly.

A huge blush crept up on my face at that memory.

"Ugh. Don't remind me of that."I groaned in annoyance."When that happened, Bruce banned us from having treats for the next two months."

Both Nightwing and I then chuckled lightly together.

"You know Emi, I've never heard you actually laugh for a long time."Nightwing admitted.

"Well, a lot of us have changed for the last five years."I complemented."The last time I was more cheerful was when we went to the funfair together in the summer with Jason before he-"

I paused from speaking, not wanting to finish my sentence.

"I miss him."I said quietly.

Nightwing gives me a kiss on the forehead.

"I miss him too, Emi."Nightwing admitted."He was like the little brother I've never had."

"The same for me as well."I replied."Do you think he would've liked Tim?"

"I'm sure he would."Nightwing agreed with a nod and then became serious."Let's get back to work."

"Yeah."I replied in a stern look.

Blüdhaven

Blue Jay's POV

After finishing our investigation in the Warworld, me and Nightwing spend the rest of the day together in the warehouse.

Despite being with my boyfriend was awfully quite and boring since we didn't really find any clues of the Team's whereabouts.

However, Miss Martian had come back to us safely thanks to Aqualad and Tigress (Artemis).

She also revealed that Cheshire and Sportsmaster tried to kill Aqualad and Black Manta, to avenge their youngest daughter and sister Artemis.

Ultimately, M'gann psionically showed them the truth she herself had unearthed, and they escaped.

So one problem is solved and now we just need to focus on finding the Team.

I brought a tray that contained two cups of mocha coffee and a plate of mini dark chocolate donuts as Nightwing watched a pre-recorded TV broadcast concerning the Reach ambassador.

Nightwing fiddled with the birdarang while I placed the tray near a small table and went to sit down next to him.

"And in my role as The Reach's ambassador to your world, I want to take this opportunity to thank this great hero, a hero who almost single-handedly saved the planet Earth from the Warworld."the Reach Ambassador declared."He saved your lives. He saved our lives. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...Blue Beetle!"

My eyes widen and I nearly choked from the mini donut that I was eating and quickly swallowed it down with my coffee as cheering and applause was heard in the background.

Then Blue Beetle appeared to speak as the Reach's Ambassador backed away.

"Thank you. Thank you all."Blue Beetle thanked with a grateful smile."But it is I who should express gratitude to you, Ambassador, for giving a normal, average human being like me the power of The Reach, the power to save the world."

I became utterly shocked at seeing Blue Beetle proceeding to unmask himself in public and praise the Reach for empowering him.

"Dick…"I started.

Nightwing didn't say anything and just snapped the birdarang into two in anger.

This can't be good.

I know this chapter is short. But I'll make sure the next one will be longer.
