(Prompt 23 was Chapter 2 of A Dieu.)

Prompt: Write a letter from one character to another.

My very dearest Mabel,

I beg you to pardon the tardiness of this reply. Andrew has had another of his mad brainwaves, and I have expended considerable effort in tracing and remunerating his creditors. One would think that by fifty-eight he ought to have learned his lesson ten times over, and yet...

But enough of my woes, for they are but dim shadows besides that dark night which now hangs over us all. Oh, little sister, my baby, my dear one! To think that it should come on so quickly, and with John away in India! Let the stains and blots upon this page tell of my anguish, for I cannot find the words.

Yes, come, and with all speed! Whatever can be done to ease your pain, the same I will gladly do. My home is open to you and the lad for as long you require it, and if Andrew says a word in opposition I shall beat him with a broomstick.

Your own loving,

Letitia
