Jo looked up from reading her magazine in the lobby when the guys of Big Time Rush returned from Rocque Records. Logan, James, and Carlos were all arguing loudly about something while Kendall was quietly bringing up the rear of the group. The arguing bandmates continued on their way while Kendall came to a stop in front of her seat.
"The gold record ceremony went well?" Jo asked with a knowing smirk on her face.
"Fantastic," Kendall said with an obviously forced smile on his face.
"You're lying," Jo said, smiling just as brightly back at him.
"Absolutely." Kendall agreed.
Jo stood up from her chair. "So, are we all set for my cabana birthday lunch?"
"You know it." Kendall nodded his head.
"Well, I gotta say, I'm pretty excited by this gift you say I'm going to love."
"Well, it is upstairs right now, ready to be wrapped," Kendall promised.
"Alright, see you at two?"
Kendall nodded slowly for a moment. "Absolutely, and don't be late…I am going to make…today your best birthday ever."
"I can't wait Kendall." Jo smiled, gave him her usual goodbye kiss, and walked over to the elevator.
Kendall watched her go with a smile on his face until the elevator doors closed behind her. And then he let his panic show and he sprinted upstairs to his apartment.
"I forgot Jo's Birthday!" Kendall shouted when he made it inside and he saw Logan sitting by the kitchen counter on his laptop.
"How could you forget your girlfriend's birthday?" Logan asked, "Especially you. You practically plan every single date down to the minute."
"I thought it was the twenty-third, but it's the twenty-first! Twenty-third, twenty-first…they rhyme."
Logan shook his head at him, "No they don't."
"Now I can't get her gift. I was going to get her a gold necklace, but we don't get paid until tomorrow and right now I only have half the money."
Logan cleared his throat and started speaking deeper in his news anchor/superhero voice. "This looks like a job for a super friend! And his power card!" Logan declared and held up his debit card.
Kendall just looked unimpressed.
"OK look," Logan dropped the super friend façade. "I'll put half the necklace on my debit card and you can pay me back tomorrow."
Kendall sighed with relief. "Oh thank you, buddy!"
"Friendship Away!" Logan declared and led the way out the door.
Kendall just groaned, "Please don't do that in the store!" He followed him to head to the jewelry store.
An hour later, Logan and Kendall were back in their apartment, necklace in hand, and thankfully Logan did act normal when they in the store.
"Thank you so much for this dude, you really saved my bacon with this."
"All in a day's work, friend," Logan said, still using his superhero voice.
Kendall thought to himself, "Okay now I just need to reserve the cabana, get balloons, food, a cake, ooh, and I have to wrap the necklace." Kendall said to himself.
Logan pulled the box closer to him. "Never fear, Super Friend and his gift-wrapping powers, is here to save the day."
"So are you just going to keep up with the Super Friend thing all day?"
"Yeah, I thought it was fun, why don't you like it?"
Kendall shook his head and changed the subject, "Do whatever you want, Super Friend Logan has totally earned it. Thank you, and I am going to go take care of everything else." Kendall turned around to leave the apartment, said hello to Camille as she was walking in and then sprinted down the hall once again, everything was going to be great, everything else he had to get done now that he had the necklace, would be a literal piece of cake.
"Hey Logan, I was wondering if you wanted to- HUH!" Camille gasped, making him look up at her from the wrapping paper he was about to cut. Was this another method-acting thing?
"Logan Mitchell! You remembered our fifteen-month anniversary!"
"Fifteen months? What was she talking about?" And then Logan looked from Camille's eyes, whose gaze was locked on the golden necklace sitting on the counter in front of him. "Oh uh., um…" Logan tried to stutter out.
"Oh, I ruined your surprise but it is BEAUTIFUL!" Camille shouted as she reached for the necklace and quickly put it around her neck.
"Oh no. Um about that Cam-" Logan tried to say but Camille kept talking over him.
"And I was just going to say you never buy me anything, but then you buy me this gold necklace!" Camille hugged him tightly and then laid a kiss on his lips that absolutely took his breath away, which really wasn't helping his train of thought function. "Oh I'm sorry, you were saying something?"
Logan froze. He knew what he should say…the truth, but he couldn't do that to her. Oh man, Kendall is going to hate me for this… "Happy Anniversary!" Logan spread his arms wide.
"Oh, this is so amazing. You're amazing! I love it!"
"Only the best for my girlfriend," Logan said awkwardly but Camille didn't seem to notice anything off about him.
"And you're the best boyfriend ever! Oh my gosh, I have to go tell my mom about this!" Camille gave him another searing kiss and then ran out the door in excitement.
Logan could only watch her go with dread filling his stomach. Okay so either he was a horrible boyfriend, a horrible best friend, or both. And he had no idea which was going to be worse. He just started pacing around the apartment in nervousness until Kendall eventually came back, his hands filled with balloons and grocery bags.
"Best boyfriend ever!" Kendall declared proudly, "I've got the birthday lunch, balloons, and thanks to my super friend Logan, I have a gift-wrapped gold necklace, all for my girlfriend. So can I have the necklace, Super Friend?" Kendall smiled and made his voice lower like Logan had been doing all day.
"Mhm." Logan nodded.
"So where is it?" Kendall glanced around the apartment.
"Where's what?" Logan tried playing dumb.
"The gold necklace," Kendall said, expecting a joke of some kind, or maybe another Super Friend speech.
"Yep…" Logan said awkwardly and looked down to avoid Kendall's eyes.
"You didn't lose it, did you?"
"No, no. I know exactly where it is." Logan promised.
"Then where is it?"
Logan broke down and started saying everything in a rush. "Camille saw it and thought it was for her because it's our fifteen-month anniversary! And I'm your super friend! And don't hurt me!" Logan closed his eyes and hugged himself tightly, prepared for whatever Kendall wanted to do with him.
"You gave it to Camille?!" Kendall shouted with a glare.
"You… you didn't see her face, she was just so happy OK? And I didn't want to be a terrible boyfriend!"
"But now I'm going to be a terrible boyfriend! I have a special lunch with Jo in one hour and I don't have a super amazing gift to give her!"
Logan looked around the apartment, and grabbed a pineapple sitting on the table, "You could give her this amazing pineapple. And it's golden on the inside."
"Come with me, look we can fix this, and by we I mean you."
"OK, fine, let's go," Logan said, trudging as he followed Kendall down to the lobby.
When they got there, they glanced around the corner and saw Camille excitedly showing off her necklace to some of her friends.
"You see that? That's your girlfriend wearing my girlfriend's birthday present around her neck." Kendall whispered to Logan.
"I don't like where this is going," Logan whispered back.
"So you use your best friend superpowers, tell her you messed up, and get that gold necklace back," Kendall ordered.
"Agh, fine." Logan groaned, "I know this is my fault, and I know our code, best friends before girlfriends." Logan walked around the corner, slowly approaching Camille.
Camille smiled when she laid eyes on him. "There's my amazing anniversary man."
"There he is." Logan chuckled. "Yeah, listen I need to talk to you about your necklace."
"Oh really? What about it?" Camille reached up to gently touch it with her fingers.
"Well, I just wanted you to know what it looks great on you, or should I say… you look great in it." Logan said panicking…he just couldn't say it, couldn't do it, couldn't make that smile go away, or the love in her eyes disappear."
"Oh, Logan." Camille grabbed his shirt and pulled him down her level to begin pressing a storm of kisses all over Logan's face, and yeah, he couldn't do this to her, not only would it put him in the dog house, but after everything she said before, she'd think he was an even worse boyfriend.
When she finally let him go after promising there would be more later, Logan trudged his way back up to the apartment.
Kendall meanwhile was busy decorating cupcakes for Jo's birthday lunch. He trusted Logan, he had made a mistake in the heat of the moment, but honestly, when it came to being a super friend, there was no doubt in Kendall's mind that Logan would pull through for him, so now all he had to do was make sure everything else was absolutely perfect.
Logan walked into the apartment, and Kendall looked up with hope and excitement on his face, which died about two seconds later when he saw lipstick all over Logan's face.
"Yeah, you're not getting that necklace back."
Kendall didn't take that very well, "We have ten minutes until Jo's cabana birthday lunch! Ten minutes! I need the necklace!" Kendall stormed over to Logan and yelled in his face.
"I can't take it back from Camille, she'll hate me and think I'm a horrible boyfriend. And technically I did pay for half of it."
Kendall just glared at him.
"OK, what I mean is… I need a super friend! Ok? Help me super friend!"
Kendall rolled his eyes. "Fine, I'll be a super friend. and he started brainstorming a plan. "OK, we just need Camille to give us the necklace back for one day, and then, when we get paid tomorrow, we'll go buy another necklace and both our girlfriends will be happy."
"Genius!" Logan nodded his head, "but how do we do that?"
"You are going to tell Camille you need to take it to get the necklace engraved and you'll have it back by tomorrow. But really, you're going to give it to me so I can give it to Jo… In TEN MINUTES!"
"Got it. I can do this. Because this will just make Camille even more happy! Super Friends Away!" Logan declared and led the way out the door.
Kendall followed him once again, he was really starting to panic now, at least everything else was already ready.
"Hey Camille," Logan said while standing in front of her door. "I've been thinking and I want to take back your necklace so that I can make it even better."
"What? Why?" Camille asked, sounding like she had no idea what Logan meant by that.
"Oh, I just want to make it better, by getting it engraved," Logan promised.
"Babe, you don't need to do that." Camille waved him off. "I love it just the way it is."
"No, you don't!" Logan shouted and then he continued in a calmer voice, "Because it needs to say, To the most wonderful girl in the world who I can't stop thinking about all the time, who is special to me. XO, XO, XO, XO…" Logan trailed off.
Behind the corner, Kendall was listening along and he couldn't but be impressed by Logan's creativity and smoothness even though he was still pretty annoyed at him.
"You are so sweet." Camille smiled at him with stars in her eyes and undid the clasp on the necklace to hand it over to him.
"No, you're so sweet, and I'll have it back to you, tomorrow," Logan promised.
"What? You can have it done at the mall in one hour." Camille informed him. "And no later. I can't wait to show it to Jo after her birthday lunch with Kendall."
"Ok." Logan laughed nervously and took the necklace from Camille. After she closed the door, Kendall ran around the corner.
"One hour? My girlfriend can have her birthday gift for one hour?" Kendall demanded.
"Yep." Logan sighed and held it out to him.
"Fine, we'll figure this out, but first Jo needs her birthday gift now!" Kendall snatched the necklace from Logan's hand and ran back to their apartment to bring everything down to the cabana. And it wasn't a moment too soon.
Right on time at two, Jo walked out to the pool and smiled when she saw Kendall standing beside one of the cabanas which was decorated all out in balloons, streamers, and a large banner reading HAPPY BIRTHDAY, along with a table set for the amazing lunch they were about to have together."
"Happy Birthday Jo!" Kendall cheered loudly as she walked up to him with a smile on her face.
"Thank you so much, Kendall, this is the best, you're the best," Jo said while giving him a hug.
"No, you are, this day is all about you. How does being seventeen feel?"
"Just the same as always, except now I have a few months of being older than you." Jo teased him.
"Right, 'cause you're really robbing the cradle by dating me." Kendall joked back, "Now you sit right here," Kendall pulled her chair out for her and then slid her back into the table, and first I want to give you your amazing present, and then we can eat."
"OK, what is it?" Jo asked excitedly. He had been hyping up this gift so much she was on the edge of her seat.
Kendall sat down in his own chair and then reached down to grab the necklace's case that was sitting on the picnic basket beside him. It wasn't wrapped because of Logan, but he told himself that was far from the least of his worries right now.
He held the case in front of Jo and opened it up so she could see the beautiful golden necklace inside it.
"Kendall, it's beautiful." Jo's eyes widened when she saw it and then her happy gaze met his own.
Kendall took the necklace out of the case and handed it over to her. "Happy birthday."
Jo quickly latched the necklace around her neck, spreading her hair so Kendall could get a good look at it. "This is the nicest thing I have ever gotten, and I am never taking it off." She promised him.
"Never?" Kendall asked.
"Never," Jo promised. "Try taking it off, go ahead."
"OK then." Kendall chuckled and he playfully tried to take the necklace back from Jo while she moved just out of reach a couple of times. Never taking it off huh? Even though this was all Logan's fault, he knew he had to keep up his end of the deal, somehow. Kendall checked his watch while he pulled the breadsticks, spaghetti, and meatballs out of the picnic basket he packed for them. He had 45 minutes.
"Birthday lunch is served." He said as he filled Jo's plate for her, and then his own.
"Seriously, you are the best boyfriend ever. All you ever do is think about me, and spoil me." Jo smiled at him. "I really think you're making this the best birthday ever."
"Really? I'm happy to impress."
"Well, you do have some competition from when my parents took me and a dozen of my friends to an amusement park, but I think you're winning right about now. Jo smiled at him.
"Lucky me, but let's dig in, because this is only the beginning of your best birthday ever," Kendall promised and started eating his pasta to try to hurry this along.
After they were both about halfway through eating, Jo couldn't help talking about her necklace more. "First I'm going to take a picture to send to my mom and tell her all about the necklace and how I have such a wonderful boyfriend. And then I'll go upstairs and show Camille."
Out by the door to the lobby, Kendall could see Logan starting to panic as his time was running out, plus the last thing that could happen was Jo showing the necklace to Camille.
"But you can't show them your necklace because… it's…dirty. And so tarnished." Kendall fibbed.
"What?" Jo gave him a look like he was crazy. "It's a brand new necklace."
"Here, look, I'll show you." Kendall insisted and held his hand out to Jo.
"Ok, but it's beautiful and I think it's perfect." Jo insisted, but she took the necklace off and handed it over to Kendall.
"Yeah see, it's right here. Oh no." Kendall "accidently" dropped the necklace in his half-eaten plate of spaghetti and fumbled around with it until it was covered in sauce. "Um see, I told you it's dirty. Let me go get it cleaned and I'll have it back to you by tomorrow."
"I have a jewelry cleaner." Jo told him, "I can take it upstairs and be back in ten minutes."
"No!" Kendall yelled but then softened his tone at Jo's suspicious expression. "You can't clean your own jewelry on your birthday. My mom has cleaner, and I'll go clean it and be back in ten minutes."
"Wait Kendall!" Jo yelled after him, but he was already gone. Ok something was definitely up. While Kendall was an amazing actor, he couldn't fool her. So either she could sit here and wait for Kendall to come back or… she could figure out what was going on herself. She decided to wait him out at first, but after he was gone for well over ten minutes, she decided to follow her instincts and follow him.
She walked to the elevator and smiled when she saw Camille inside. "Hey Camille, what's up with you?"
"Hi Jo, first off Happy Birthday! And you're not going to believe what Logan did! So how was your birthday lunch with Kendall?" Camille said excitedly in a rush.
"Thanks Camille, and I don't know, Kendall's definitely acting weird. What did Logan do? And is it good news or bad news?"
"It's great news. For our fifteen-month anniversary, Logan bought me the most beautiful golden necklace."
"Wait, he got you a necklace too?"
"What are you talking about?" Camille asked her back.
"Kendall bought me a gold necklace for my birthday and it is absolutely beautiful."
"So where is it?" Both girls asked each other simultaneously.
"Logan took it back from me because he wanted to get it engraved with the most romantic message ever. I made him promise to be back in an hour but he hasn't found me yet. Where's your necklace?"
"I don't know. Kendall just gave it to me about an hour ago, but then he took it back, dropped it in his food, and then ran off to clean it." Both girls turned that information over in their heads, "You don't think?"
"Think what?" Camille asked, she didn't know what Jo was thinking but hearing this news rubbed her the wrong way too.
"Just Kendall acted so weird I know he's hiding something from me, and doesn't it seem weird that both of them gave us a gold necklace on the same day, but not at the same time?"
Camille gasped. "You don't think there's only one necklace do you?"
"I don't know, but I think I know how we can find out," Jo said. Both girls stepped back into the elevator and made their way up to apartment 2J, the door was wide open, and as they walked in silently, Logan and Kendall each held up one side of the necklace, but it snapped apart in their hands.
"It's my fault." Kendall declared, "Jo deserves a boyfriend who can keep her birthday straight."
"No, its my fault," Logan corrected him, "Camille deserves a boyfriend who can give her a gift more than once in a lifetime."
"I'm afraid the super friends are super bad boyfriends," Kendall said with a sigh, and Logan nodded along in agreement.
Jo and Camille shared a look and nodded at each other. "No you're not," they both said out loud, startling both guys when they turned around.
"Uh, why are you here?" Kendall asked as he and Logan both stood up nervously.
"We're friends, we talk." Camille laughed.
"And we figured it all out," Jo added, and both girls walked closer to their boyfriends.
Camille smiled brightly at Logan, "And you saw how much I loved that necklace and didn't want to hurt me and tell me it wasn't mine."
Jo was smiling at Kendall, "And you may have been a bit confused about when my birthday was, but you did everything you possibly could to make this day special."
"But I abandoned your cabana lunch." Kendall reminded her.
"And we only bought one necklace," Logan said as he and Kendall each held up their broken half.
"No, you bought two gold bracelets." Camille corrected them.
"That maybe you could give us at our birthday/anniversary dinner?" Jo suggested.
"You know, I think that sounds like a splendid idea." Kendall agreed.
Both girls held out their wrists, and after Logan ran to grab some duct tape quickly, both boys happily placed the bracelets around their wrists.
"So you aren't mad?"
"Of course not, you both did everything you could to make us both happy, even if you made some mistakes, this will be an anniversary and birthday we will never forget. Now that we have our bracelets," Jo smiled, "we have to get ourselves ready for dinner."
"Yep, we'll see you boys in a few hours, make sure you have enough food for all of us OK?" Camille asked.
"Um yeah, sure thing Camille," Logan said, still somewhat nervous.
Both girls smiled at each other and then leaned close to place a sweet kiss on their respective boyfriend's cheek, and then walked out the door without another word until they burst into laughter once they reached Camille's apartment.
"OMG they were so scared, weren't they?" Camille laughed out loud.
"Yeah," Jo laughed along, "but they do know it's far from the worst thing either of them have ever done, Right?
"Yeah, but I can admit, seeing it, I probably said some things I shouldn't have about how Logan never gets me gifts but then this neck- or bracelet proves him wrong," Camille said as she studied her wrist.
"Yeah, and I know Kendall will do anything for me, he'll also do anything for his friends, and he didn't want to let Logan or you down either."
"Yeah," Camille nodded, "we have such great boyfriends."
"Yeah, but we aren't going to let them forget this anytime soon, are we?"
"Oh, I don't know, at least until we both have a necklace." Camille laughed.
The next day, Camille and Jo were both hanging out at the pool together, when Kendall and Logan both confidently walked in with matching boxes in their hands.
"Jo, sorry for the extra day, but this is for you, and this time I promise it's all yours. If you never ever want to take it off this time, I won't try to take it away." Kendall smiled as he held the box open for her to take in.
"Ahh thank you, Kendall, it's beautiful and amazing, but nowhere near as amazing as you."
"And it holds a candle to your own beauty," Kendall promised her. "May I?"
Jo sat up in her chair. "Yes, you may."
Kendall kneeled down beside her and latched the necklace around her neck. "There, right where its supposed to be."
"Thank you Kendall, and seriously don't worry, yesterday was amazing because I spent it with you and my best friend. I know this will be a symbol of how much you care about me, and how much you will always do everything you can to make things perfect, even when you fail, you always do."
"Thanks, Jo, but you're the one that makes things perfect for me. If you could only see the way that you shine in my eyes."
"I think I know because when I look at you, I know I see the exact same feelings looking back at me. Always." Jo smiled and gave him a kiss on the lips, after which they were blind and deaf to everything else around them.
Beside them, Logan also held out his own necklace to Camille, "Here you go, and I hope you don't mind you had to wait an extra hour."
"Why would I mind an extra hour?" Camille asked, but when she took a closer look at the necklace she could see it was engraved, To the most wonderful girl in the world who I can't stop thinking about all the time, who is special to me. XO, XO, XO, XO
"Oh Logan, you even remembered that. I love it, and I love you."
"And I love you too. I'm sorry I'm not the best at giving gifts."
"Forget about that. I didn't really mean it. I love you for you, not what you give or don't give me. Because beyond anything else, you make me happy like no one else can."
"No, look please understand that I never want to take you for granted, and if I ever do, just slap me and knock some sense into me, I promise I'll listen."
"Of course, I know you always listen to me. You really are the best boyfriend ever." Camille let Logan place the necklace around her neck, and then she pulled him down for a kiss that he couldn't, and wouldn't ever want to escape.
