No beta- All Mistakes are mine.
It's been a couple of weeks since Sakura had been in Hell, and so far it wasn't bad per se.
Not that being in Hell was inherently good, but it wasn't as bad as Sakura had thought going to Hell would be. Growing up she thought of it as fiery pits and torture or being poked by Satan's pitchfork while you did hard labour or something. Not whatever the fuck this was.
Within a couple of weeks, though, the pinkette had been ordered to do simple tasks really. Filing, cleaning, rearranging the office, things like that. Like she thought before, it wasn't bad. But there were a few things that bugged her about her arrangement.
One; Why was Kakashi allowed to do whatever he wanted?
There were times where the older man would simply divert his tasks to one of the girls if it was something he didn't want to do for one reason or another. Usually it's to read that god awful book he always seems to have with him. Some of the tasks Sakura had been given came directly from Kakashi so he simply wouldn't have anything to do.
Two; Why hasn't she seen Itachi?
It wasn't necessarily bugging her, but she was pretty curious. Everytime she had a task, it either came from the stoic Sasuke or the too-hyper-for-a-demon Shisui. Both of which had her do uncomplicated tasks. Only the former made snarky comments while the latter would work with her and tell her jokes if only to make her smile. If it were up to her, she would only work for Shisui for the time being because of how easy going he was. It wasn't like Sakura could have an opinion on Itachi since he was usually absent when it came to her. So of course it would make her curious.
The thing that was bugging her the most was how she wasn't getting any answers.
That moment two weeks ago when she had talked to the other girls, she was told that Itachi, Kakashi or Shisui had told them their fates, told them how they died. So far, neither person or demon had an answer for her, and it was driving her crazy. The former would simply shrug off the conversation and change the subject while the latter would give her another task to do. It was aggravating in the least, but Sakura bottled it up and went about her time every time it wasn't answered-
"Oy, Sakura!" Ino said on top of Sakura's bed.
"You're spacing out." The blonde waved her hand in front of the other's face. Once she got her attention, Ino sighed.
"Over-thinking again, huh?"
Sakura nodded her head but didn't say anything.
"Come on, you were given a task. This time it's Itachi." Ino pulled at Sakura's hand and led her out of their room for the time being.
"What does Itachi want with me?" Sakura asked curiously, knowing that she hadn't been asked for him since she's been here.
"With Itachi, it's hard to tell. Sometimes he will just have you sit there while he does work. He's a bit of an enigma." Ino answered with a light chuckle. Once they made it to the door to the person in question, Ino knocked on it and left, leaving Sakura there to do whatever it was she needed to do.
Itachi answered the door, no expression on his face whatsoever. He stepped to the side to let Sakura in and shut the door once she settled.
"...is there something you need me to do, Itachi?" Sakura asked, still a little confused.
Itachi stared at Sakura for a moment then nodded in the direction of a mirror in the wall.
"I heard you had a few questions. I just thought I might answer them for you."
She instantly got excited, hoping to get the information she wanted. One they were to the mirror, Itachi motioned for Sakura to sit down in a chair in front of it. Itachi took the chair beside her and stared at the mirror for a few moments before speaking up.
"So this is what we do. We stare into this portal here and decide who all comes down to hell."
That wasn't something that Sakura wanted to know, but she was happy to know nonetheless.
She began to look at the mirror and noticed there were a few people on the other side. One man with spiky black hair and a bored look was looking down at his desk at what looked like boring paperwork. The man looked like he was about to fall asleep.
"This is what you do? You just stare at people while they live their life?"
"Yes. Be patient." Itachi scolded, but there wasn't any venom in his words.
Sakura did just that and watched the man on the other side as he began to clutch his chest. Unfortunately for him, no one else was in the room he was in. The man fell out of his seat, hitting the ground with a hard thump. Sakura gasped.
"He's having a heart attack, it looks like. There isn't anything you can do to help him?" She asked, her caring nature coming through.
Itachi had a small grin, but it went away as soon as Sakura turned to look at the demon.
"We don't interfere. There are special cases where we can, but we need permission from Madara before doing so." He explained as best he could. Sakura couldn't help but watch the guy pass away slowly. When the man shut his eyes for the last time, the mirror went blank and the image of another person popped up. This time it was a blonde woman at what seemed like an American football game.
Letting go of the breath she didn't know she was holding, Sakura looked back at Itachi.
"Do you have a choice as to who you see in this mirror thing?"
"Portal." He corrected her.
"And sometimes we do, but normally those are special cases." He didn't give much more information about that on the matter.
"So what will happen to the man with the heart attack?"
"Nothing. We will either see him in an hour or he will go up to Heaven. I'm pretty sure he will go to Heaven, though. He hasn't done anything wrong in particular."
"How do you know that?"
Itachi sighed, not thinking he was going to get the second degree today. Standing up, he went to the only desk in the room and pulled out a scroll. He opened it and began to read off the words on it.
"Nara Shikamaru, accountant. Has a wife and kid at home. Smoked a lot hince the heart attack. The worst thing he's ever done was steal a pencil in the fourth grade. He never went to church but he never did anything horrible either, so he will go up instead of coming down here."
"That scroll has people's lives in it?"
"No, just this one in particular. We have billions of scrolls here, but the ones closest to death come here to our department of sorts."
"So… would I be able to find my scroll if I wanted to?" Sakura asked curiously.
"No, the scrolls are heavily guarded by my father and mother. We don't have access to them, but they get split between me and my brother and my cousin when it's time. After someone dies and they get sent here, they go to the archives while the ones of people who died get sent up to whomever does the same job we do up there." As soon as he said that, the scroll in his hand disappeared with a 'poof'.
"And that's it." He concluded.
Sakura frowned.
"Then there's no way for me to find out how I died?"
Itachi walked back to the mirror, sitting down in his previous seat. He looked at Sakura and frowned just like she was at the time.
"There are things in this world that you want to know, though when you find out you will wish you hadn't known. I think that is what your case will be. I personally can't tell you, but I don't think you particularly want to know how or why you died."
"Why? There's a reason why I died? But I didn't do anything in particular! I was a nurse for crying out loud, my whole life was about helping others. What could I have done to deserve… this?!" Sakura exclaimed, letting a bit of her anger out.
Itachi was not phased by the outburst. It was like he's seen it before.
"I cannot tell you more. So if you want to watch and help, then you can, but if you're too irate over this, you can just leave."
Without saying another word, Sakura stormed off, making sure to slam the door on her way out.
Poor Sakura...
Anyway, Shikamaru had to be added because it's his birthday Wednesday (9/22) and Ino's is, incidentally, on the 23rd (9/23)
Seeing as it my birthday this Wednesday, I thought I might get this chapter out a little early. There wasn't much, just a bit of an explanation on what the demon brothers do down there.
Also, I know this is random but almost everyone I know has a Facebook, right? Anyways, I made a Facebook group called Fanfiction Addicts Anonymous. It's a closed group but it's where people of all kinds and all fandoms can come together and read/celebrate fanfiction. Readers and Writers of all kinds are welcome, all I ask is that you fill out all the questions when you join. ( You get accepted automatically when you do anyway)
