As Elsa and Bruno were seated at the table, they were chatting with the family. Talking with the rest of their family members always made them feel better. Bruno had his arm around Elsa as she leaned her head against his shoulder, her hand on his chest, while Bruno's other hand was against her belly as they listened in to what their family had been up to lately.
"Tio? Do you and Tia Elsa know what you guys are going to name your baby yet?" Isabel asked.
"We haven't given it that much thought, mi flora. Even when we first found out, we didn't really consider it." Bruno replied, shrugging, rubbing his wife's belly.
"Isa does have a point though. We should start getting to that sometime." Elsa said, turning to Bruno.
"If it's a girl, how about something pretty but yet not uncommon...like...Vanessa?" Pepa suggested.
"That is a beautiful name Pepa, we..."
"No offense, mi vida, but this newest Madrigal has just as much chance at being a boy. And he needs a brave-sounding name...like...Alejandro." Felix said, looking over at Pepa.
"Alejandro does..."
"Alejandro? You want him to be teased when he begins going to school, carino? And besides, there are hundred boys in the village named Alejandro already. No...she is going to definitely be a girl and her name will be Vanessa." Pepa said, firmly.
As Pepa and Felix began arguing or suggesting other names, pretty soon followed by Augustin, Camilo and Luisa, Bruno and Elsa looked at each other and chuckled.
"What do you think, mi querida?" Bruno asked Elsa quietly.
"I think they'll argue themselves out eventually." Elsa whispered back.
As the family had went on and on about names, Mirabel had continued closing her eyes, awaiting her fate, ready for any sort of pain once the poison had taken effect. She waited and waited...and waited and...waited. Slowly, she opened her eyes and then looked down into the cup in her hand. Did she not take enough of the poison?
But as Mirabel looked closer, her eyes widened in horror. This was not the poison-filled juice meant for Elsa. This was only regular juice. She thought she only saw the poison embedded inside but that was only due to the fact she was hiding in a somewhat dark corner but once her eyes did adjust back to the light...nothing but juice. No poison.
Then Mirabel quickly looked over where Elsa and Bruno were. If this was not the cup with the poison, that meant that Elsa's life was still in the balance. And to her immediate concern, she saw Alma go over to the table with the remaining goblets. If Mirabel did not react quickly, her grandmother's horrendous deed would still carry through.
When the family saw Alma arriving at the table, all arguing or other happy chatter about the baby stopped. Everyone had given her looks of anger or appalment. She then looked to Bruno. It seemed Bruno had already been spreading his accusations and everyone was already agreeing with him.
Alma had cleared her throat then she had sighed sadly t hen she had turned to Elsa who glowered at her. Then to everyone's surprise, Alma had put down the tray to take Elsa's hands into her own.
"Elsa...my dear...I know what you and Brunito and everybody else in the family think of me. That I am someone who deserves to be looked upon in judgement, hatred. And all of you have a right to feel that way especially you. I had done nothing but given you a hard time since you had come to Casita. And...I was wrong. Very wrong."
The family and Elsa and Bruno were shocked. Alma was now...apologizing for her actions? Bruno's look of surprise however had quickly faded, his anger returning. He still did not trust his mother in the slightest. Bruno had put his arm back around Elsa, glaring at Alma.
"We don't want any apology for this, M'ma. What's done has been done." Bruno said, coldly.
"I know what you are speaking of...and it's true, Bruno, amor. I...I am the one who had placed the snake into your bed that night." Alma confessed, looking down.
Everyone had now looked even more shocked but then stared at Alma, enraged. Bruno however looked beyond enragement. He stood up and went over to Alma, Elsa had held him back as his teeth gritted, his green-brown eyes alit like a fire.
"Do you realize I could've lost everything I loved, M'ma?! If that snake had come any closer, my wife and child could've died! And you expect me to simply forgive you for trying to murder them?!" Bruno spat.
"Bruno..."
"No, Elsa, he is right. I was really, REALLY wrong to do that, above anything. I have treated you and my own son so poorly and I know I do not deserve any form of love or forgiveness from you. And I won't force you two to do such." Alma said, eyes shining with tears.
Dolores had gotten up from her seat then she had gone over to join her Tio and Tia's side, she had touched Elsa's shoulder then she had stared at Alma, scowling, her arms crossed.
"Abuela. Not accepting or abusing someone is awful but to murder that person is another thing entirely. None of us can look past that." Dolores said, the same cold tone as Bruno's.
Camilo had gotten up from his seat next then he had gone up to Alma and shook his head, hatred also evident in his features.
"Abuelo would not also love you anymore for the way you've acted towards Elsa so far either, Abuela. We're all a family and we do have our moments of either arguing or intense fights but in the end, we always make up. If we all still had our Gifts but they had changed and were dangerous to everyone around us, would you see us as you did Elsa?" Camilo asked.
"No. I wouldn't, Camilo, not at all. You all mean so much to me and I know I should've given Elsa the same feeling of trust, acceptance but mostly love but instead, all I had done was misjudge her."
Alma looked at Elsa with a saddened look then she had gone over to the tray then had picked up the goblet...with the poison as Mirabel watched, eyes widened in panic. Alma walked over to her daughter-in-law then had grabbed onto her hands then placed the goblet into them.
"I know you do not want nothing from me, Elsa, you or Bruno or the family but...I had made some papaya and grape juice just for you to try. It's not a bribery but more like a peace offering. And it is good for you and your child." Alma said, smiling a little.
Alma reached to touch Elsa's belly but then Bruno had quickly placed his hand protectively over it, staring angrily at Alma.
"What are you trying to pull now, M'ma?" Bruno growled out.
"Brunito, por favor. I am not trying to do anything. It is only juice. There can be nothing deadly about some juice. Carino, it really is only a peace offering." Alma said, looking straight at Bruno.
Bruno had eyed his mother warily, studying her face for any evidence of lying. He did not seem to find any trace whatsoever. Elsa looked at the goblet in her hands then to Bruno.
"I guess there is only one way to find out if she's telling the truth or not." Elsa said.
Mirabel saw Elsa raise the goblet to her lips then had run over towards her. Just as Elsa was about to take a sip, Mirabel had suddenly come in between her and Alma.
"Tia Elsa, don't!" Mirabel cried out.
"Mirabel..."
Before Elsa could say anything else, Mirabel had taken the goblet from her hands, Alma had gone over to her, frowning.
"Mirabel, what are you doing?"
"Showing everyone your idea of a 'peace offering'." Mirabel replied, angrily.
Mirabel had thrown the goblet to the ground and the juice had spilled out. The family and Elsa and Bruno had gathered around Mirabel and saw the liquid on the ground. But then saw something else. Another dark blue liquid mixed in. Antonio had brushed some of it with his fingers then was about to taste it but then Pepa had picked him up, her eyes also widened in fear.
"No, Tonio, that's poison."
"Yes. The venom of a rare poisonous insect. I'd know that blue color anywhere. Can't tell you how many times I've nearly encountered it due to my clumsiness." Augustin added.
Bruno and Elsa stared at the poison-filled juice at their feet. Then Bruno had hugged Elsa, sighing in relief. He had once again come close to losing her and their child. Then he looked at Mirabel who smiled over at them then he had pulled her into a hug.
"Gracias, Mirabel."
"You know I'd do anything to help you and Elsa out, Tio." Mirabel whispered, hugging Bruno back.
Elsa had joined in the hug then the three of them had turned to Alma. Bruno had gone over to Alma, fists clenched, anger-filled orbs bearing into her hatred-fillled own.
"What do you have to say about this, M'ma? Another so-called apology?'
Alma had looked at the broken goblet then at Elsa menacingly then focused her gaze back onto Bruno, her fists also clenched, her entire body shaking in rage.
"No more apologies, Bruno. No more nothing. It's time to get it over with and end this monster's life as long as I am still standing!"
Without any warning, Alma had reached into her shawl and had taken out a gun. The family backed away fearfully as Alma held up the deadly object.
"There is only two bullets inside of this gun...one for you Brunito and one for this curse you brought upon us."
The family looked at Bruno and Elsa in concern but then to Alma, both scared out of their minds but also angry. She had truly gone insane by this point that no one was possibly safe.
Alma had aimed the gun at Elsa, Bruno had hurried to his mother to pull the weapon out of her hand, but he was not fast enough as Alma had pulled the trigger and the bullet had gone into flying into Elsa, right at the side of her belly.
Bruno had snapped his head over to Elsa and saw her place her hand against her belly as blood began to leak out. Bruno had gone back over to his wife and had caught her just as her knees began giving in and she began falling.
Alma looked over at what she had done and had...smirked evilly. A crazed looked in her eyes. She then had aimed the gun over at Bruno as he held Elsa, not paying attention.
But then Mirabel had jumped onto her and had disarmed her. As Alma was beginning to sit up, Mirabel had grabbed the gun and looked at her grandmother and then had aimed the gun towards her. Alma had found herself facing the barrel then she looked up at Mirabel.
"Mirabel. Do not do this. You wouldn't do this. I'm your Abuela, your...your family."
Mirabel's eyes had softened for a moment then she had looked over at her Tio Bruno cradling his wife, eyes filled with concern, trying everything he could to stop the bleeding wound as Elsa had clutched onto him. Then Mirabel had turned back to Alma and glared at her.
"You do not know the meaning of that word anymore."
Alma frowned at Mirabel and had reached out her hand to grab the gun but before she could, Mirabel had fired it off at the old woman's head, blowing her brain out.
The family saw Alma's body fall to the ground then had returned their attention back to Elsa who's eyes wwre starting to open and close. Mirabel dropped the gun then she had gone over to Bruno and touched his shoulder. Bruno looked at his sobrina with a grateful look but then had quickly concentrated back onto Elsa. Holding her against his chest and his hand over where the wound was as blood leaked underneath his fingers.
"Hold on, mi vida. Hold on." Bruno pleaded.
Elsa looked up at Bruno, her vision swimming. She held up her hand and blindly searched for Bruno's, Bruno had then used his free hand to hold onto Elsa's in a death grip.
"Bruno...I...I can't feel the baby kicking." Elsa muttered, weakly.
Bruno looked down at Elsa's belly, where his hand was. He could not feel the baby moving anymore either. Bruno felt his heart racing. He was internally a mess. He didn't want his wife or his baby to die. His mother might have succeeded in taking away his happiness after all. Bruno then had swallowed the sob building into his throat then he stroked Elsa's hair.
"Shh, shh. Our...our baby is going to be okay, mi amor. I promise. Let's worry about you too, okay?"
As the family saw Elsa slipping away more and more, Julieta had returned with their doctor. They were stunned at the sight before them. The family gathered around Bruno and the severely wounded Elsa, near death and then to the corpse of Alma and what was left of her head. Julieta saw the gun then she looked at Bruno who motioned his head to Mirabel. Mirabel had looked over at her mother then sighed.
"I had to, M'ma and we all know why." Mirabel said.
Julieta nodded in understanding and then she had also gone over to where Bruno was holding onto Elsa, followed by the doctor. Julieta saw how bad the wound was then she looked up at Bruno and touched his shoulder.
"We need to let the doctor take care of her now, Bruno."
Bruno looked hesitant to let go of Elsa for a moment but then he slowly nodded then he had picked up Elsa as carefully as he could without disturbing the wound then had gently given her over to the doctor. The doctor and Julieta followed by Augustin and Felix had left with Elsa. Bruno watched on as the doctor carried his wife up the stairs then he had gone over to Alma's body, soon joined by Mirabel and Pepa. Dolores was keeping Antonio away from the grotesque sight.
"M'ma is really dead." Pepa finally said.
"But at least we can no longer fear what she would do to Elsa or the baby anymore." Bruno muttered, angrily.
Pepa and Mirabel nodded then both had hugged Bruno. Bruno turned to look upstairs, wondering if Elsa and their child would make it. If they died...he would gladly pick up that gun and kill himself if it meant he'd be with his wife and baby forever.
